Suggestions on AMAeSI course offered by AeSI

A few weeks back Mr pratap, wrote me a mail asking me this

“I want your suggestions on AMAeSI course?”

Well I don’t know what he meant by this question. If the question was to tell him about AMAeSI the course then I would have directed him to this post. Or does he meant to ask me about my experience on AMAeSI, well then I am documenting the same here in this blog since 2004!!!

Since I don’t know what specific topic he wanted to cover  so here I am listing out some of the things that I have covered about AMAeSI course in this blog

This is list of FAQ about AMAeSI the course. I made this presentation as during that time I was getting lot of emails from students of class XII about the AMAeSI course from AeSI.

This is blog post in reaction to a poll question that i have put up and is quite popular. Still now my answer to this holds true. I am waiting for the day when I can change my answer to this question.

This is another query that I receive most of the time about what is the scope of AMAeSI? What are the prospects after AMAeSI?

Looking fro examination centers of AMAeSI exams then look no more. All of them are presented in this map of examination centers.

Another common query and this one is answered by Bishnujee. This post is just the beginning find more.

I might have missed something important so here is the list of the articles that I wrote under AMAeSI

Everything about AMAeSI at one place, Hope this helps.

Love to receive this blog posts in your email then subscribe

5 things not to do in AeSI for AMAeSI exams

In today's post I will discuss 5 things NOT to do when you are in AeSI
and aiming to clear AMAeSI exams. They are from my experience of going
through aesi. Hope they will chart a path for you and you will avoid
them in your journey.

1. Don't skip the in basics
I did this in fluids and though I passed the subject in first attempt,
but I had a tough time when I encountered those basics again in
aerodynamics-1. So remember to cover the basics before you delve
deeper. In mathematics II, basics came handy for me as the paper
revolved around it.

2. Don't forget the syllabus book
As discussed in many previous post, you will automate and streamline
your study schdule if you study a subject with the syllabus book. Not
only syllabus gives all the topics in logical order but it will make
sure you don't miss any.

3. Don't skip exams, whatever be your preparation.
This happened to me, I thought I have not prepared well for principles
of flights and so I didn't go to the examination hall. That turned out
to be a grave mistake when I saw the question paper, later that
evening. And that mistake cost me two semester in which I had to study
flights. So whatever be your preparation, don't skip the exams. If
nothing more you will train your mind to be the examination hall.

4. Don't lie about your results.
After the exams don't lie about your results especially from your near
and dear onces. I have seen how students falsedisguise their results
and cause tension and anxiety in them. This lie snowballs and not only
spoils your next attempt but also hurts your near and dear once when
they come to know about it. I have never done this and this had kept
me inso many surprises that AeSI threw at me during my days of AMAeSI.

5. Don't be an island.
Since AeSI has no proper institution, meeting and having lots of
seniors and friends and network is rare. So form relationship. Use
internet, this website, ouraesi, aesi and aesiaa groups to be
connected to the aesi community!! In fact this website and ouraesi
sprang to make sure aesi students and graduates do not remain in an
island. So get involved and connect.

So that's it. Hope you will gain something out of this. Want to

How i cleared my Workshop technology exams in AeSI

Perhaps in section A of aeronautical syllabus of AeSI,workshop technology is the most feared subjects after principle of flights. Feared in the sense that the passing percentage of this subjects is very low.

In my days of AeSI, after clearing WT and hearing something from our maths faculty at GIE, i wrote a piece on How to pass WT exam. I am reprinting it here as i see that this is still relevant and aesi students will benefit from it applying it to any other subjects of AMAeSI exams.

Last Friday in our maths class, our maths teacher Mr. Sajath, pointed
out that "...the examiner won't take the pain of checking it
again !" He said that if an answer is not clear and not complete or
the answer is one step short of the answer he has in his hand and the
handwriting is not legible, then the examiner who is perhaps checking
100's of copies won't bother but mark the answer incomplete and move
on!. This remark set my thoughts in this direction.

Well thinking from the point of view of examiner, i think i will also
do the same if i am the examiner. Its natural that when he
encounter's bad handwritting, he will get irritated and won't bother
checking it. So what do we do ?

Why not capitalize on this trait of the examiner. I mean why not use
this fact to our favour. Why not aim to submit our answer sheet as
the neatest copy that the examiner receives !! This has advantages.
The examineer will pleased to see a neat copy. It known fact that
good handriting brings good feelings. Ya its true. Observe your
reaction when you see really nice and tidy work. Well the examiner is
also a human, so tidy answer sheet will set the right first
impression on the examiner's mind. Other advantage will be that you
yourself will not have difficulty revising your work if it is well
paragraphed and neatly written.

YA i am not babling i am taking from experience. Now after that
remark when i thought of my exams i felt how true the statement was
because my workshop tecnology exam is an example. I know my friends
who gave exams with me were much more proficient in theory and were
more capable but what cleared me was my neat work. That exams i
conciously made my work neat and loo my WT paper was cleared. Well
another example was Thermo exam!!

As i write this i can see a quote on my mousepad. It says

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT.
BETTER THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO TRY.

How true. So its your turn now, you can wait for good things or by
trying get the better thing.

Lesson learnt from P-2 exam

First lesson to be learnt from this exam was don’t leave the immediate previous semester question paper. Do it and make sure you have all the numerical and questions done!! This is what happened to my roommate and me. We studied everything, did every numerical twice, scoured the notes by heart but ignored the numerical of last semester. So there we were. sitting in the examination hall cursing myself and the question setter for not making an effort and myself for being foolish enough to leave these questions thinking they won't be repeated so soon.

Well, if these two questions were a blow then the rest was scary as I was left there to answer all the theory questions for which the theory was inadequate. In p2 mainly the theory comes from the combustion chamber part and here I did one more mistake in my preparation. I did make notes but they were not enough, I mean this subject requires notes and to be studied from variety of books, they questions are similar but not a single book you will find in Gie that has the complete answer in it, so you got to scour loads of book to get a good answerable answer. Otherwise it just vague, and on the figures that you have to depend on. So make it a point to have good notes on the theory part of P2.

Does having good notes will suffice, no? Having notes gives you an edge now studying and memorizing them does the real work and this takes me down to my last minute exam blunder. From the start of the course people fed us p2 is easy. Just do the numerical do the cc and you are clear. And I foolishly believed it and so did some other folks! But this over simplification made me neglect the subject. Yeah it actually did. I did give it less time, I concentrated on the numerical, left out the theory for last week before the exams and this is where I did get my most anxious moment.

I delegated the theory till the last week before the exams and then when I finally sat with the book and the notes, I started getting anxiety pangs. And believe me they are much worse that snake bites!! “Ok lets do cc”. “Hey what are the different types of nozzles” and then ok that is the derivation for the Bryton cycle. This and much more topic tumbled down to me all at once, drawing me, drowning me. I somehow did the stuff but was not satisfied; I could have done much better if I had paid the proper study schedule for p2. So folks learn from my mistake. Never delegate the work of p2 and never neglect and let it sit there till the last moment.

One of my reason for keeping the thing off to last minutes was the confidence that I had 25% of the syllabus like the cycles already covered in section a and I can do that in an hour and that proved to a naught. It not that I couldn't do the numerical or derivations, but its that it look more time I expected and silly mistakes snarled in every fifth line making things frustrating, so do all the stuff before exams when you have lots of time. keep the exams and a week before the exam for pure old studies. no new things, just revision of what you have already learnt.

And when I am on to advising then there is one more that I guess every amaesi'an will agree. When preparing for amaesi, be prepared to surprised at the question paper, its always as inventive as Edison (perhaps!), as unpredictable as the stock market. And there are no rules. don't say this topic will come , that won't come? It a wild stock market out there. any question is possible so just go ahead and study what you can. Don't believe me just flip the June 2004 and Dec 2003 questions your doubts will melt away. As one batch mate of mine who gave flight for the 4th time put it candidly, "every time I study for flights I learn a new thing!" So folk you will always find new things; the subjects are vast and so is the mindset of the question paper setter, so just make sure you learn every time you read and don't guess. just learn what you find. who knows!!

And last but definitely not the least thing that I learnt from the exam was not to fret over what I have not learnt. Just make sure that you know everything that you have studied and concentrate on it during the exams. Fretting over what you have not done cost a friend of mine a semester. You know, our syllabus is big for 6 months, but we brave souls do take the plunge. But don't expect to cover all of it. If you can its well and good but crying over what's not covered it not great as I learn from mistake of one friend in this exams. I am in no way suggesting selective studies. No that's even worse. You loose more by it. All I am saying is if time gets crunch and before the exams, its always wise to have a in-depth knowledge of what you already know than shoving the new material under stress!!! So prepare from the beginning of the semester........

2008 a review of myaesi – your chance to catch up!!

2008 is ending and many of the blogs I follow and read are coming up with their internal review of the year for 2008. This gave me the idea for this post. I will give month by month update on what has happened in this blog. This year I tested two new interface for the blog and also tested Google adverts for the blog and many other unique things that I would have never learnt if I weren't blogging

January

January began with a mail from a trainee in NAL and then there was good news for AeSI community and then I wrote one informational post regarding special information for AeSI student members and informed u about 59th AM of AeSI. Wrote about GPA and a small post regarding MS in aeronautical and turbo machinery in UK and US. Then there was Bishnujee’s response to AeSI's student membership cancellation after 8 years. and I end the month with Mistakes fresh AeSI graduates do in their interview.

February
AGM news in Hindu and waiting and announcement of results were the major news in this month, followed by announcement of Tata's entry in aerospace domain. Then I also did AeSI section A results comparison. and had some problems in posting... and wrote after exams what

March
Tips on resume from satyam, and I exclaimed about no enews from AeSI and asked you all best way to search job....and discussed  two basics questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview and also warned graduates of AeSI on how to send resume and how to edit resume in a professional way.

April

No April fool for this month as I wrote about one cardinal rule that one must remember about interview. and posted my first ever Friday links. and posted about aerospace events of the week and about a new catia training centre launch.and touched upon 3 glaring mistakes AeSI graduates do. And posted links for online GATE preparations and preparing for aerospace interview. also shared GE interview questions, solidwork video tutorials, open letter to anna university.

May
May was the busiest month. posted about catia video tutorials, tips to pass AeSI exams,do and don'ts for AMAeSI exams, DRDA SET, and announcement of AeSI exams.

Also posted 7 signs of unprofessional resume. how to fail exams, tips for getting most of revision and revisited how I cleared my workshop exam and posted the map of examination centers of AeSI along with the announcement of Berlin air show and ended with actions that will take your career ahead.

June
This was the exam month and apart from exam related stuff I posted about industry CAD usage data, and informed you about the technical interview questions after DRDO set. Apart from this tools in aerospace and highlighted a cool tool to find tutorials and other eBooks for learning catia, solidworks. Apart from CAD programs I listed some useful jobs links for AeSI graduates and gave a general structure of a cover letter and talked about will I recommend AMAeSI to my friends and family. Informed about IIT course materials on YouTube.

I also gave general advice on 6 things that you should do in your last semester.

July

This month began with an unsuccessful contest that I ran, told you about how to accelerate your job search, resume sending tips and asked you are you taking gate 2009 exams?

I answered the question I want to work in core field, told you about Olympics and aerospace connection and updated you on the farnboroug air show and DAE university's decision to cancel aerospace and aviation program. Asked you which is the best study center for AeSI and advised AeSI students on things to do before they begin a new semester as we speculated about AeSI results and criticized IIT video lecture series and ended with tips on getting training and jump starting your next semester and stated tips to get employed after graduation.

august

This month began with quantity vs. quality debate and reposted
Bishnujee 's message of take pride in AeSI degree. told you about kung fu panda advice. and this month saw the launch of solidworks 2009 and I saw my worst resume ever. Told you about 3 things my mentor at NAL taught me and did a section a analysis of AeSI results, and urged students of AeSI to make syllabus book there friends. also informed you about few important changes in gate 2009 format that you should know about. and argued about having your network for AeSI graduates and students. And also posted advice from rolls royce.

I touched subjects of NAL training and how to became consistent like Australian cricket team and asked AeSI graduates to remember certain things after they pass out of AeSI. and informed you about the chandrayaan project. I also shared study tips that I learnt from my math's teacher at GIE. and then had a long delay.

November
Most of November I was out of station and I had a long delay, and posted Pratt and Whitney single core fan. and became my shorted month of posting this year.

December
I told you about why I write this blog, about inertia, and shared 4 tips on handling exam anxiety and told you about Vijay Malaya and shared an important lesson that my boss at NAL taught me and asked you to see the biggest full moon of the year.

well this is what I did on the blog for the whole year. Do let me know if I missed on something important. I would like to thank all of you for reading what I have to say. I hope in year 2009, I will be more consistent and will add value to AeSI student and graduates life. Do share your experience with myaesi with me. Thanks and happy new year everyone!!!

Some do's and don't for the upcoming exams........

Back in 2002, this time around i was anxious about the upcoming AMAeSI exams and i posted "Some do's and don't for the upcoming exams........" in ouraesi club. I liked the stuff that i wrote back then and i think its relevant even today. So i reposting the email here so people can benefit from it.

Its been a long time since i posted anything here. well , you know exams are knocking so you can guess what i was doing. Then why i am here today u may wonder.

Well last night while i was waiting for my foodwalla to come, i stated thinking of the mistakes that myself and my friends i know did in their exams. And u know what, i got quite a few simple mistakes that have compelled them to study those subjects again! So i thought about posting the do and don't that i have encountered about the exams !! Maybe this will help some of you.

The first thing that comes to mind is the dilemma of my roommate in last exam. He knew all the questions in last years maths exam but he could only attempt 60 marks paper !! Guess why? Time was up. NO the space to write was up !! Yes he consumed all the pages. And to tell u the truth, even I had stopped at the boundary !! So folks when in exams have paper economy in mind !! Its feels really awful to not being able to complete the paper because there's no more page available !! Ask my roommate, he will certify.

Another incident of the last exam was of Hamza, You know he got the highest marks in flights that i know of and he should have completed his section-A last year if he was a bit careful in his last semester's maths exam? Well what he did in his maths exam was that he did different parts of a question at different places. He never read the warning or instruction of doing the same question at the same space and paid the price !! So this year have hamza in mind and do the questions sequentially and attempt all the parts of the question together.

Now comes the major mistake that i did for my last flights exam. I read all my notes, i read all the chapters of the prescribed books and all the theory and solved all the numericals. But guess what i failed Why ? The reason was that i thought i had read everything there to be read and solved all the numericals to be solved but never glanced at the syllabus book and missed 3-4 topics and unfortunately that exam had most questions from those topics. So guys Keep that damn syllabus book before you while you study and see to it that u have studied and covered all the topics.

Another useful advice that i heard once from one of my teacher was to always start with a question u are most comfortable and confidant ! Sounds logically, so why don't you apply it in this exams.

Well that's it and if you have anything to add then u are most welcome.

Please do comment back with all the new advice you can give.

Clean, Tidy, Consistent and AeSI exams!!

Been to banergata zoo. Enjoyed a lot and learnt few lessons that
relates to the answer sheet that AeSI students will submit in exams.

Be clean and tidy. That's a big plus point in your favour.

Keep your drawing neat, consistent and clean.

Same way answers should be ordered and keep it neat, consistent and
clean.

Reflecting back, all the exams I passed and did well had these points.
My drawings in those exams were clean, answer sheets were tidy. And
every questions were ordered and answered with consistent structure.

Why it helped, well let's leave that for some another day. But today I
want to emphasize that be clean, tidy and consistent in your
presentation in the upcoming AeSI exams which are scheduled on 7th
December. (thanks jayakumar!!)

One simple yet effective way of getting good marks in any exams!!

One of the simplest and very effective and mostly ignored way of
getting good marks in any exams is to avoild silly mistakes.

Yes silly mistakes.

Be mentally prepared to avoid them. That's the only way to handle this
mistakes.

Be it any subject, from fluids to flights, from propulsion to
aerodynamics, being watchful of silly mistakes can make or break your
marks!!

Before you go for exams and in the week ahead of the exam, train your
mind to be alertful. Train it to think and do the tasks, train it to
filter the mistakes. Train it to be watchful!

This simple mental exercise of keeping an intent of being watchful is
enough to have an alert mind during the examination hall. So begin
today and have successful exams!!

Good luck!!

Different ways to study for exams and which you can choose?

There are lot of ways to study for exams. Different people have
different inclination and routes.

So what's your way to study for exams?

Do you prefer learning by mouthing all the words you are reading or do
you study in complete silence?

Do you enjoy studying indoors or outdoors?

Do you love working with a textbook or a rough copy?

Do you like Reading from notes or from the book?

Do you read the difficult subjects before the simple onces?

Do you keep syllabus book with you or you do not?

Do you simply follow class lectures or have your own reference
materials?

Do you use Internet in your studies or you do not think it's not much
of use?

Do you study with examination paper or without?

Do you devote complete attention to one subject or you mix and match?

Do you study early in the morning or late at night?

Do you study with pen or paper or just read everything?

The point of the post is there are as many ways to study for an exam
as there are students. So it doesn't matter how, where, and when you
study.

What really matter is that you are consistent in your approach
whatever it is.

If you like studying early in the day, so be it. Be consistent with it.

If you love Reading on the rooftop all alone, so be it as long as you
are consistent.

Consistency is the magic!! The ingredient for success in any practise.
So aim for that and every thing else will fall in place.

Good luck for your exams!!

How to time your exams?

They say "Timing is everything". But in aesi exams, timing is not
everything. Your knowledge rules. Time plays a secondary role.

But in exams, planning and having a close watch on time can help you
finish the paper in time.

So keep an eye on time when you enter the examination hall.

As I have said in an earlier post, timing each individual question is
bad stategy, instead plan to complete certain number of question in an
hour.

For example instead of slotting 15 mins to each question and checking
the clock after each question, you aim to complete 4 questions in an
hour and check your watch once in an hour.

This latter technique works better and I have used it in all my aesi
exams.

So timing may not be the crux of the exams but keeping a close watch
on time plays an important part.
