Its Kis's day

Well  today a good  day  for  kis, or to ay it in a better way,  i liked the way  kis worked today!!  He was positive, He took initiative and  he  overcame the fear to  do the things for himself.
 
 
From the beginning of the day, he was good and without  complaining or grumbling, he went  straight to work with whatever tools he had and did a good job, which  lead to a small success, which boasted his and mine confidence too.
 
Well  3 things are good today.
 
1.  He had a plan for the day and he carried the plan well.
 
2.  He didn't wait for his boss to  call him and hand him the experiment, but instead took the horse in his hand and drove it to the success.
 
3.  His  boss in not methodical as he should have been, so  this actions of kis will give directions to his and his boss project.
 
 
One good thing about his boss is that he encourages creativity and do-the-things yourself and that can be a great advantage for him and many under him, if he can take this positively.  He can perhaps take up the challenge to do the things he said he said to me when i arrived here in Bangalore.
 
Well in a way, i liked the day for kis, because he did all that things that he said to me when i arrived a month ago.
 
 
Anyway,  coming to myself, as august ends, i have calculated that my software hours as of now stands at 84 hours, with c taking the most 24 hours and solid works following with 16 hours.
 
Anyway learnt a thing about myself that whenever i got stuck in a c program, i went out and during the walk or after just returning to my desk, i solved the problems.  Will apply this techniques in all things in future. 
 
well time to go, maybe i will order  the palm tomorrow.

Analysis of result june 2005

Someone very eloquently put it " Its cold, its calculating. There is
no grey. Its all black or white". She was talking about maths and
statistics. Well that 's the very thing that's attractive about them.
They give answers. Here are the answers, that i got from the analysis
of the results this time, which as you maybe aware i am in the habit
of doing it for the past semesters.

This analysis is my 6th one, and having the data's for the past years
have given a unique perspective to this analysis, as i have compared
them all together as you will see from the graphs.

For the benefit of all those like me who are more akin to figures and
graphs, i have added like last year the magic of excel graphs. Eye
pleasing and informative at the same time. So without much adieu
lets begin.

Section A

a. In section A, as always principal of flights has the lowest passing
percentage. With 7.36% passing that is 7.36 people passing out of 100
hundred who appeared for the exam.

b. Best performance for the last four semesters is of ED, Which has
46.37% pass out this time.

c. Fluids is the subject with most number of student appearing this
time in any subject of section a.

d. The subjects of Thermo, Maths-II, Solids and fluids had more than
1100 student appearing in each! This probably stems from the backlog
that gets created as the students fail in this subjects in previous
semester.

e. 18.125 out of 100 people who had appeared in any subject of section
A has cleared the subjects. This number is fairly constant for the
last semesters as seen from the trend line of

sec a.

f. Of all the semesters, June 2003 has the lowest pass out percentage
in Section A, highest being December 2002 semester.

g. If you look closely at the data, you will see that this is the
first time that any
subjects pass out in Section A has crossed more than 45% and subject
who broke the record is ED.

Section B

a. In propulsion stream, biggest shocker is VMD result which
previously always hovered along 80% pass out line, but this time it
had Nil passing percentage, with no one passing out of 35 who
appeared.

b. Propulsion two is the top scorer of this semester in propulsion
stream with 84.62% passing percentage. This subjects passing
percentage fairly remained close to this 80% line only dip was in June
2004, when it went below 40%!!

c. Math-III is the second best in prop stream, with close to 60+%
passing percentage and many above 70+ marks!!

d. In propulsion I, the passing percentage has declined from 55+% in
December 2002 to 48% this semester.

e. In all propulsion core subjects, propulsion III is always the one
with lowest pass outs and this perhaps explains the maximum number of
students that appeared for it this time in propulsion stream.

f. Structure one is the highest scorer in aerodynamics stream of
section B, with an all time high of 86.21% pass outs and the marks i
heard were generous, as one of my acquaintance got 93, highest ever
mark i have heard of

g. Vibration also made a good showing with 71.87% passing percentage.
This is highest for vibration in last 6 semesters.

h. Aerodynamics one was a shocker this time, as only 3 out of 52 who
appeared passed. Looking at the data, you Will learn that aeroone has
the distinction of being the subject with highest ever pass outs of
AeSI, which was in dec 2003, got 90.47% passed in this subject.

i. With an average of 56.87%, aerodynamics stream for the first time
has overtaken the passing percentage of propulsion stream, which for
this semester stands at its lowest 43.36%!!

j. Compared to all the passing percentages for last 6 semesters,
propulsion streams results this time were lowest.

IF they can do it, why can't NAL?

Yesterday was good day in a sense as i saw the flights of 6 r/c
aircraft's. Well in a way it was like my first test flight. only
difference being instead of testing own-build aircraft we were
assembled there for a session of seeing these commercial radio
controlled planes fly. The event went well, with only 6-7 people
involved and a total of 12 person present there at the time of flights
, everything went smoothly.

First test flight of a flying saucer type aircraft failed. It couldn't
generate enough lift to be up.After two and three miss starts, one
particular light weight plane did the flight we all were waiting for,
it soared high and was up in the sky for 4 minutes, with making
several rounds above us and finally making a smooth real aircraft type
landing. It got the applause we all were ready to release.

The most expected disappointment was the helicopter, it had some cool
advancements, as i learnt latter, but it was flimsy and fragile and
it paid the price at the very beginning of the show.

The supersonic stealth fighter type aircraft also impressed, as i saw
Sankar Narayan sir, taking much interest in it, probably because he
has selected that very triangular wing configuration and also the fact
that this aircraft was much smaller. But this one had an inherent
disadvantage of no rudder and aileron, so all the work needs to be
done with differential control of the aircraft's propellers!!!

An interesting incident happened when Radha Krish sir piloted the
stealth aircraft and it went straight to the bushes.

One particular thing that i learnt today was about SN sir,( he is
kis's boss,) was that he has foresight and he thought of everything
and he was prepared to have a tea biscuit party after the show and it
was i think his best demonstration.

He is a hard task master and has the unique ability to inspire
people. Full of tales and anecdotes, he never fails to tell you a
tale or something. So here in the NAL cricket ground, during the
flight test, he assembled the talents of Indian Aeronautical and
challenged them to think up of ways to ignite the passion.

At that time, while on the show this all looked like nothing, what
good it is when you see that NAL, India's premiere lab which has
graduates like SARAS, HANSA and LCA, will let there scientists fly
commercial radio controlled air crafts. It looked like shame. But
now i realize the real purpose behind the show and it shows how
clever SN sir is. With this field trip he reignited the flame of
creativity , challenge in everyone present there. He instilled "If
they can do it, why can't NAL"

First flight test

Yesterday was a good day, as i initiated my way to drawing. On my
boss's requirement i have to learn solid works. He said in future, i
will need more people to take care of the drawings and so i need and
extra hand and i have to be prepared for it. I guess is genuine and
not a way to let me stick with some thing non essential. Anyway my
benefit will be I'll learn solid works and what the heck. If i had to
do it all by myself then, i don't think i would have touched this
software, anyway great, doing something is better than not doing
anything! And it will add weight to my resume too.

well yesterday was a good day for one more reason. The reason was i
have developed a way to measure my effectiveness in nal. The main
premise is based on the fact that all the time i am in NAl, most of
the time, i am in front of a computer, so i will measure my
effectiveness, on the amount of time that i spend on different
software. This has two advantages, one that i will have a log of what
software and how many hours i have used that particular software and
the other advantage being to have the opportunity to learn the
software. I have selected 8 soft wares that i plan to learn while i
am in NAL, some of which i have started and some i will begin as the
work progress here. So this way my work will be cut out here, if I'm
not working on a project for sir, then I'm completing my computing
hours on a particular software.

I firmly believe that to be a knowledgeable software user, you have to
spend time with her, this is just like us, more we spend our time with
each other, more we discover each other. Same goes for
software's........

By playing with software, i don't mean checking out menus and reading
help, to truly know you need to take live projects and solve them, by
solving problems will you learn.

happy with my work and i am the right kind of a person he was looking
for. I am glad to hear this. And would like that this should always
be there and i do as expected and better .

Things i learnt today

Saw the basics of MATLab and with Fortran i learnt about taking
in data from texts files and then making them reading them from
the file and making the program runI am working on a simple turbojet
program which i have to read and decipher and then modify for
sir's use.

We are really interested in a small range and i will make the programs here.
will catch up latter bye

9:19 AM 8/11/2005

well yesterday was my day with my guide scientist. I
encountered a problem in fortran and i was not able to pin point
the problem in the code, so had to call sir and after a long
debugging process, we finally understood the result.

I liked the session as i saw how sir's mind was working. As i saw
myself jumping to conclusions, he remained on the program and began
analizing the program from the beginning

and bit by bit, patiently he solved the program. So learnt the
lesson of going to the root of the problem.

For today, i plan to read matlab simulink and check if c program
works in this fortran program. Sir will be absent today so i want
to learn and try as much MATLAB as i can. I also intend to modify
this fortran program to give me the output as i want it!!!

What i did today?

This is the first day when my guide scientist is not in clocter
for the whole day and i have this control room (as it is called) all
to myself.

They say you reveal yourself when you are alone, or when you
know you are not being watched? So i learnt one thing about
myself, that i am a computer fan and addict as i read about fuzzy
logic, how to use it, didi a small basic simulik model and read
and showed kishore MATLAb's capabilites.

I have a deep interest in FL and AI and i want to pursue it further
and would like to engage in a field that entwines aerospace and
software and FL AN and AI.

FL and AI will be of great use for autonomous vehicles, probes and scientific
experiments and i want to be a part of this when it happens here in India!!

Well today i have learnt two things one use the units and when
you have done a thing do it properly and if there is a fault in
your calculations ,find it before proceeding.

I went to my G Sc without that and had to get a secret some advice
and he asked me to be careful. Well that's what i learnt today.

Another thing that i felt was how clearly sir, stirred me from one
stage to another. And now the whole picture that he has painted for
me is coming in focus. Though lot of fuzz is still there but i am in
the project of MGT.

How do i describe today. I did a lot of calculation but my boss is
busy today and so he has not even looked at my data and has
dismissed me. Well lets see, maybe this will make me learn more. I
will learn more about the topic i am in.

sometimes this feels like not contributing anything to him. I want
to be a real help to him and want real work and this i know is his
test work by which he is testing me.

Well someone said that you must always go the extra mile. Am i
going with my boss. No i guess not, but i am trying and i will surely
get the reward.

I will learn more and more about the topics i have to read and i will
make sure that i know what i am needed to to do the next day.

One strategy to cope with sir is to know fully and to know what is
going to come next and this comes by observation and questioning. Be
vigilant

WELL TODAY WAS NOT BAD. i DID SOME CALCULATIONS AND NOTHING MUCH.
My BOSS DIDN'T COME

MUCH, THOUGH I WOULD LIKE HIM TO COME MORE OFTEN.

yesterday was also same, only thing was that he had a presentation and
so he took some randomly calculated values to the committee. Maybe
those were a small part in his over all presentation.

Kishore attended the brain storming session and he was excited about
it. My boss didn't take me. But his boss took him as the projector.
Well next time i will ask my boss to take me too. Lets see what they
are talking there. Anyway learning something here has too options. on
you have to come prepared that you will do this and that thing, then
only can you prepare and get the maximum out of the stay here. I
plan to learn matlab and fortran and autocad by this month.

I will learn the BASICs of this softwares and drive this knowledge to
the level seekd by the companies.

How can one improve the environment of clocter. well this is not
the .... sir is coming

Well today is bore, i have no work and my boss is busy so here i am
whiling my time.

Although i took this opportunity to make a make that graphs of
passing percentage and the task i take up twice in months years
time.

I have finished some of it and conclusions are remaining and those
will be there in the at home. I will take this file and will upload
it back to my site and in gmail. Another thing is that i need to
look a more methodical approach.

By methodical i mean, to make a template and in which i just need to
add the values to get that percentages and reports.

Well what was the most surprising fact that i have learnt from this
analysis, it was that section a in DEC 2004 had the lowest passing
percentage. In propulsion stream, sir came so had to stop.

June 2005 result a preview

Hello there,
if you all follow the ouraesi club, you will know that after each
exam i do a small statistical anlysis of the results, giving a proper
idea on how many student passed ina particular subject, stream and
area.

So this semster is no different. I am in the process of doing that
right now, but here in this blog, i am sharing a preveiw of what is
to come.

18.125 % out of 100 students who appeared in any subject of section
A passed. This is really constant for the last 6 semesters of which i
have records.

Why is this so, i don't have a definte answer. But then theree is an
interesting number that number of student appearing in thermo,
fluids, maths 2 and solids is all avove 1100 students!!!

43.36 % is the average pssing percentage of section B propulsion
stream, where aerodynamics this time notched 58.87% .

This is not common as from the last 6 semesters its the propulsion
stream that was excelling but this time generous marks in structures
pushed aerodynamic streams passing percentage ahead of propulsion!!!

In propulsion stream the biggest shocker is the VMD result. In the
last 4 semesters whose result i have, the passing percentage hovered
around 80+% passing out of hundred who appear for the exam but this
time no one passed out of the 35 who appeared!!! That was a not a
surprise to me, as i had the personal experience of appearing in
this exam and the drastic , sudden change in question paper was the
main reason to blame!!!

anyways, this is just the preview, more will come when i bring out
the summary in detain due in this week, with graphs!!! so w ait on.

Precision industry

Well well have neglegted you. no NOT MUCH ITS ONLY THAT I DON'T
HAVE ACCESS DIRECT ACCESS TO NET in NAL and so i am not able to post
what i write there.

Well will carry a floppy now and save them there and then upload this
when i get time. hope that will do and i will keep only one page
for writing my experinces.

3 things i have learnt till now are....

1. NAL is the premier lab mainly because it is and outsourcing lab
where every aero firm of india outsouces hits projects and
experiments. So its always on the hard push and that makes it produce
results.

2. In NAL there are lots of good people but only thing is that
the number of unworthy people is more than the worthy one. Some of
them are even not concerned .

3. Greatest lesson that i learnt is that don't compromise on
results. You ae in a precesion industry and so there is no room for
error and you minimize or better eliminate that

I thing the last thing is most important and i am trying to do this
by practicing to be precise and to make less and less mistakes untill
i make no mistakes at all..

Well got to go now, my next post will be probably on the finds of
what happened in the june 05 results!!!

NAL NAL and NAL

Hi there ,

To give you an update on what i am doing this days. Well i am Doing
UN - paid training in NAL. NAL,the lab recognised as one of CSIR's
best-managed national laboratories undertaking over a hundred high
science high technology R&D projects in aerospace, is the place i am
from 8 to 6 every weekdays!!!!

It was established on 1 June 1959 with offices in Delhi and moved to
Bangalore on 1 March 1960. I am at the bellur campus and for all
those guys who don't know why it is the bellur campus!! Its
because the lab is on the banks of the Bellandur lake. Yes that
ugly, stinky stream that you see while heading for it in the NAL
bus is the bellandur lake, once pure, but today a stream of nalla!!!
Tanks to us!!! But lets not talk of the environment now, this
is my roommates field and i would like to leave this to him to
write about.

Anyway this NAL campus houses the Nilakantan wind tunnele, named
after the first director of NAL Dr P Nilakantan (1910-1964). IT was
his passion and the drive that erected this 1.2m x 1.2m trisonic
wind tunnel !! And to all those folks in NAl who walk by the
wind tunnel, without bothering to take a second look, next time you
are near this structure do remember that every Indian aerospace
vehicle has graduated out of this remarkable facility!!!

Long absence

IT has been a long absence, well was busy with things happening
here. To give you an idea. I am in Bangalore, the it capital and
as I learnt after steeping on my first auto ride from Bangalore
city station to moonekolala , the aerospace capital as well.
There are so many aerospace establishments here, getting to see these
big buildings having the names GTRE, ADE, HAL, NAL ISRO CARS, etc
all in one auto ride was a elevating experience for a aesi student
like me who has only heard about this organizations and gave one
the feeling of having arrived!!

Truly it was great.

Well now on I guess , in this blog you will hear more about
Bangalore and my experiences here, so be prepared.

I will also highlight the things I face here as I get to go inside
this wonderful organizations, which are pillars of Indian aerospace!!!
And I don't think there will be a long absence between this posts
hopefully!!!

Well this blog is not only for my experiences at NAl but also a
way to keep myselp updated on things i have thought and i would
like to pursue next.

So in this regard, fuzzy logic is the thing that i would like to
study more and more. this is an area i would like to explore in my
programming.

I don't know how much progresssed has been made in this regard but
in india, i think definetly fuzzy logic has a good future and
need.

Second day in NAL

Second day in NAl and i already have the direction in which i have
to go. Mr ramamurthy sir has given me the instructions and
directions on what i need to do and what he intends from me. He has
advced me to learn Visual basic as my project will involve that
software.

so off i go had to make a program to calculate thrust!!

first day in NAL

So i am in NAL now working under a reputed propulsion scientist Dr
S ramamurthy. Well so what will i need to do now. what i will take
from here.

Well lots of things.

i will lern MATLAB, CFD and FEM anad apart from this i will take and
rub off the dedication that Dr ramamurthy employes. I will catch his
spirit and thininking in scientific and will make him proud of
having meas a project trainee. I want to make him feel that i am
capaple of great things.

I desire him to take the mentor role of that long ago Mr neogi my
maths teacher took. HE boosted me to the place i am now and i hope
and feel that Dr ramamurthy will do the smae with me.

I will dedicate my time effort in fullfilling his projects and hope
to help him thus.

and this blog will reprsent my feeling, acheivements, failures here.
