• They should be flexible enough and deliver the quality output as per customer specifications.

Desired Candidate Profile:

• In-depth technical understanding of Gas turbine fundamentals (3 spool engine concepts)
• Experience in maintenance, repair/service and overhaul of gas turbine aero engines is an added advantage
• Knowledge of various deterioration mechanisms in Aero engine is an added advantage.
• Good knowledge on working principles and components of Gas Turbine Engines for Aero application Experienced in engine assembly and build shop
• Excellent Communication skills and Inter personal skills
• Have the flexibility to work in shifts.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Proactive approach and an ability to take initiative and work in a fast paced environment

Eligibility Criteria:

• 0-3 yrs of experience
• B.E /MTECH (Aeronautical) OR AMAeSI OR AME (Mechanical only) –completed with on the job training done.

Selection Criteria:

1. Suitable Candidates have to undergo a written test which comprises of both technical and aptitude questions.

2. Shortlisted candidates in the written test would undergo a first round of technical interview on 09-May-10.

3. The shortlisted candidates in the first round of Technical Interview must attend a final round of interview in person on Monday, 10-May-10.

Entropy and what it teaches on how to prepare for a technical interview?

I am sure everyone who has studied thermodynamics has heard about
entropy. Everyone of us know what it is? We know all laws related to
it. We can write down the equations to derive it!

But this is not we will be asked in an interview. Consider this real
interview questions on this very topic.

1. What is zero entropy?

2. How many types of entropy do you know?

3. If a mother kisses her baby, does the entropy increases in that
process.

So you see in an interview people are not looking for an exact
definition, or direct equation, but they look for your understanding
of the concepts. They look for the application. They look at the
boundary

So how can you prepare for this type of questions?

You prepare for these kind of questions by the techniques already
mentioned in this blog.

Whenever you study a topic, read about then think about the same at
your non study time. Use time for going to you next class to connect
the topic with your life. Ask all sorts of questions to probe a topic
in many different angles.

Discuss the concepts with your friends. Make them more interesting and
challenge your friends to prove you wrong.

The point is whenever you study a topic, don't leave that topic in the
textbook. Bring it out. Connect it to your daily life.

Don't go to an interview if you have.... Part 2

Why the rant about 'Don't go to interview if you....'?

Well yesterday a friend of mine was in the process of taking an interview. An AeSI guy, who is doing apprenticeship in NAL came for the interview.

That post highlights all the mistakes he did during the interview. We were so angry over the way he handled himself, so i came up with that post.

If you are coming for an aerospace interview then expect questions on gas turbines and you aren't allowed to say that I haven't studied that. It's your limitation not mine. So spare us that excuse!

A fresher's resume should be decent, should have the right amount of the projects. Too many projects in the resume definitely raise a warning bell. Be sensible and take great care while putting them in your resume.

And above all, you need to defend your resume, you submitted it, so as an interviewer I fully expect you to at least know what you have written in the resume.

And last of all. Professionalism !!

Please be a professional. It's not about you. The company is not a charity institution to help you get stated in your career, it's business and you need to provide and show the potential to be a use to it. Otherwise you are as good as the chair you are sitting on while in the interview.

This reminds me of the interview advice Gururaj gave years back to all AeSI graduates!

Always remember, friends can lead you towards an interview, but getting inside after that is entirely on you.

Kind of Questions that Aerospace Engineers can expect in Technical Interview

A while back Bishnujee wrote an email regarding the kind of questions that aerospace engineers can expect in his or her technical interviews. Most of these technical interview questions stress on basic and sound understanding of Aerodynamics, Aircraft Structures & Performance related questions. Apart from that he had some very specific points that you might want to keep in mind while preparing for a technical interview as an aerospace engineer, so here’s an excerpt from the email

Normal questions range from basic Aerodynamics questions usually involved with Circulation & Vortex of airflow, generation of aerodynamics loads from laser scanning of aerospace vehicles, Aircraft structures questions test on Validation of Finite Element Models techniques,advantages & disadvantaged of Hi Loks fasteners over solid rivets, material corrosion issues to dissimilarities in materials, then queries involved on individual experience and academic subjects depending on there background.

There are questions on of use of A & B  stress allowable in determining the Margin of Safety of your calculations and basis for using same. There are further question on comparative behavior and properties of 2024-T3,6061,7075 alloys and there application in various sections of airplane.

Well I had my share of interviews and for a propulsion or aero-mechanical stream engineer from AeSI following are the question that cropped up in most of the interviews. Explain Brayton cycle? What is entropy? Explain second law of thermodynamics? Explain working of a gas turbine engine? What’s the basic principle on which compressors works? What's the effect of nozzle on gas turbine performance? What are the loads acting on a compressor blade, on a turbine blade? What's the usual material of compressor and turbine? Why is it used? What is service ceiling? How to determine the range of an aircraft? What are the different stages of aircraft flight/

Well these are some of the question that I have faced in my technical interviews. As I said in this post, most of the question crop up from your resume, so when preparing for an interview do scrutinize it and get all the basics ready.

Technical interview after DRDO SET

Mr. S.M.SINDEER HAMIDI, was another person from OURAeSi group who shared his DRDO technical interview after the DRDO SET exams. He was not as elaborate as Tejas but he had listed out all questions he faced.

3 things to study before you head for an interview.

I was involved in couple interviews this last month and as I was experiencing the interview process once again I got reminded of the basics that a person going for interview must study before he heads for an interview. So I jotted down the main points of this post as I awaited my call for the interview along with the other candidates.

1. Study the requirements clearly.

This is the first step, not knowing the requirement is just like not know knowing where to aim at, not knowing what to shoot and not knowing  where you are headed. So first and foremost point is get to know the requirements, what are they looking for, what skills they desire, how much experience they want and have listed on the requirement.

2. Study your cv.

Yes your CV, the CV that brought you to the interview, ascertain what attracted your resume to the requirement, what your CV has that makes you good for the job, how the skills and experience listed in your cv matches to the requirement and what are the skills and points that you can highlight during the interview from your CV that match with the requirement.

3. Study your projects and basics of what you have written in your resume.

Take special note of the experience and the projects you have written, rehearse what those projects are and be prepared to tell someone in simple terms if you are ask you to explain a particular project, know the basics of the projects. If you have done a project on transient performance analysis of gas turbines, be prepared to answers with the questions on gas turbine basics. Likewise if stress analysis of centrifugal compressor is your forte then be prepared to answers basic questions regarding stresses and compressor.

 

Will studying the above 3 things will only help secure you that job? Well yes it will help but articulating what you know in the interview will be the main deal. So practice your answers before hand. Don’t have a bookish answers but do have general idea on what and how to answers. Frame your answers based on your knowledge of the requirement, on what you written on your cv and to highlight the skills that are required for the job. Answer in a way to highlight the points on your resume that fit with the requirement.

So this are some of the ways one can prepare for a technical interview. Remember that in an interview (or in a job) you will only succeed if your skills, experience and most of all your interest match!!

DRDO SET interview questions for mechanical

I don't know what has happened? When i was aesi student, every year DRDO SET figured in our discussion and ouraesi had the same share of discussions but for last couple of years it has totally diappeared from an aesi student's life. I mean i have not heard anyone talking about it, there is no mention of it the ouraesi club.

Can anyone reading this update me, what's going on in regards to DRDO SET? Can an aesi folk give the DRDO SET test? I know he can. So why is the group and aesi folks silent about it. Why no discussuion. Has DRDO gone out of aesi's folks radar?

Anyway, i was browsing though my old harddisk, back from my aesi days, i found this good interview summary. It was stored as a plain text file in my computer, so i have no idea where i got this from, if someone knows the person do let me know i will mention the credits.


Basically the guy who wrote this was doing mechnical engineerring and these is the synapsis of the whole DRDO interview process that he went through after passing DRDO SET exams.

Chairman:
A metal rod is heated in furnace. It is now allowed to cool in ambient environment. One time it is hanged vertically and in second case horizontally. In which case it will cool faster?


My Comment:
This was not a stress interview. They listen me patiently. Whenever I said I don’t know the answer they have provide me clue for answer.


Well that's it. So what can we aesi folks can learn from the whole script. What is your favourite subject is one of the important question in any technical interviews and more so if you are a fresher. This is where the whole technical interview revolves. Interview tips from DRDO SET's actual interview

One the great thing about OURAeSI group, that aims to unite all the members of AeSI, is that the spirit of community is there and people share their experiences.

Back in 2003 tejas patel gave DRDO SET examination and passed it. After that he had his DRDO technical interview. Every one has that, what special about it?

After that he was generous enough to share his experience with us in the ouraesi club. Since the number of messages in yahoo groups gets buried under the layers of many messages, i am pasting it here with my remarks at the end so that they will from hence forth available via google search and can benefit more people.

l/d ratio of 1,middle lifting surface of l/d 10 and
tail lifting surface of l/d 5.
(I was quite confused to hear so high question )
M:is it blunt nose?
P:yes
(here i make a mistake)
M:this is missile why do u want to have lifting
surface?
ALL:that u decide u have to design.
(I showed something which was a missile but i dont
know whether it was what he was asking or something
different.but i suppose he wanted that only because he
didnt gave any comment)
P:show me the shock pattern.
(again i was confused what to do,what we have studied
is only bow shock and rest we dont know what happens
at back)
(Still drew something,he didnt commented so i
suppose..)
P:show me the location of CP?
M:give me the freestream pressure.
P:just tell me by ur idea where it will lie.

M:we test the model
A:how we will test,directly i can take a model and

M:no there should be dynamic similarity.(at that time
it could not recall kinematic similarity)
A:what will u equate?
M:reynolds no,and mach no in our cased.
A:and ..?
M:Froude no,but we dont give much preferrence to it.
A:that's what i wanted.
A:how will i test a LCA,if i have particular reynolds
no then how will u test it in wind tunnel?
M:we will match the reynolds no.
A:how?
M:suppose u have a one fifth model then vary other
parameters so that it remains same.

then again it came with chairman.
C:u say u have worked on supersonic WT.
C:why dont we dont equate reynolds no there?

M:at high speed mach no i similarity is more important
than reynolds no similarity.

i know i had made lot of mistakes but this was my
first technical interview.so i am happy even if i dont
get it.i tried to perform well,but was baffled with
the first question.

so this is the post of tejas, i have intentionally left the message intact to give you the flavor of the sitution there. First of all thanks to tejas for the candid and honest mail about the interview.

As mentioned in the earlier post, look from where most of the questions were triggered..

The fav subject is omni present and this is where the whole interview got its focus. See how different it would have been if the question tejas's answer was more related to a subject he knew a lot about. So the first lessons to learn is have your favorite subject ready. Let it be the subject that you know the most about and the subjects in which you are most confident.

Second thing that you might have noticed is that all other questions that are asked are from the replies that tejas was giving, so you see interviewee is the one who leads the interview. It is your words that triggers the questions, so keep them to the territories that is topics that you are confident about.

Since this is already a long post i'll discuss other points in some other post.

Preparing for a technical interview remember these points.

Preparing for a technical interview. Then here are some points that
you should keep in mind.

1. Know the basics of the subjects you have listed in resume and all
the projects you mentioned
2. Keep your concepts crystal clear.
3. Be ready to explain the concepts in general terms not the
definitions.
4. Know your resume like the back of your hand.
5. Talk slowly.
6. Explain and paint a picture when explaing a concept.

I know a friend of mine who is expert at explaining stuff. And he uses
this approach in all the interviews.

How to answer interview questions?

Recently there was a recent walkin and I heard many Aesi folks went to
it but many fizzed out in the technical rounds after clearing the
test. So Here are some thoughts on how to give answer interview
questions so next time you are better prepared.

Start with a bang.
Always begin the interview with what you know, start from your
strength that is the bang I am referring at.

Don't answer what is asked but answer to lead.
Answering and answering properly are two different things in an
interview, so answer intelligently. Remember you are the leader in
your interview, so answer in such a way as to lead the next questions
to your area of strength.

Basics should be clear. Explain from that point onward.
Whenever your are asked a question, begin from basics, lead the
interview from there. Explain the basis and answer the question than
just giving a one line answer. Interview is not just about the correct
answer, it's more about the thought process that went behind that
answer.

Be confident. Go to the interview as they need you not you need them.
Be confident but not be obnoxious.
State the truth but always in positive light.

Interview is just like a tiffin box. Each compartment has separate
dish. This is how you should present yourself. Don't give every thing
at once. Separate the stuffs and present it best. You might know a lot
of things but successful interview is all about presentation. The
better way you present yourself and your skills, the better your
chances of getting that job.

2008 is ending and many of the blogs I follow and read are coming up with their internal review of the year for 2008. This gave me the idea for this post. I will give month by month update on what has happened in this blog. This year I tested two new interface for the blog and also tested Google adverts for the blog and many other unique things that I would have never learnt if I weren't blogging

January

January began with a mail from a trainee in NAL and then there was good news for AeSI community and then I wrote one informational post regarding special information for AeSI student members and informed u about 59th AM of AeSI. Wrote about GPA and a small post regarding MS in aeronautical and turbo machinery in UK and US. Then there was Bishnujee’s response to AeSI's student membership cancellation after 8 years. and I end the month with Mistakes fresh AeSI graduates do in their interview.

February
AGM news in Hindu and waiting and announcement of results were the major news in this month, followed by announcement of Tata's entry in aerospace domain. Then I also did AeSI section A results comparison. and had some problems in posting... and wrote after exams what

March
Tips on resume from satyam, and I exclaimed about no enews from AeSI and asked you all best way to search job....and discussed  two basics questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview and also warned graduates of AeSI on how to send resume and how to edit resume in a professional way.

April

No April fool for this month as I wrote about one cardinal rule that one must remember about interview. and posted my first ever Friday links. and posted about aerospace events of the week and about a new catia training centre launch.and touched upon 3 glaring mistakes AeSI graduates do. And posted links for online GATE preparations and preparing for aerospace interview. also shared GE interview questions,solidwork video tutorials,open letter to anna university.

May
May was the busiest month. posted about catia video tutorials,tips to pass AeSI exams,do and don'ts for AMAeSI exams, DRDA SET, and announcement of AeSI exams.

Also posted 7 signs of unprofessional resume. how to fail exams, tips for getting most of revision and revisited how I cleared my workshop exam and posted the map of examination centers of AeSI along with the announcement of Berlin air show and ended with actions that will take your career ahead.

June
This was the exam month and apart from exam related stuff I posted about industry CAD usage data, and informed you about the technical interview questions after DRDO set. Apart from this tools in aerospace and highlighted a cool tool to find tutorials and other eBooks for learning catia, solidworks. Apart from CAD programs I listed some useful jobs links for AeSI graduates and gave a general structure of a cover letter and talked about will I recommend AMAeSI to my friends and family. Informed about IIT course materials on YouTube.

I also gave general advice on 6 things that you should do in your last semester.

July

This month began with an unsuccessful contest that I ran, told you about how to accelerate your job search, resume sending tips and asked you are you taking gate 2009 exams?

I answered the question I want to work in core field, told you about Olympics and aerospace connection and updated you on the farnboroug air show and DAE university's decision to cancel aerospace and aviation program. Asked you which is the best study center for AeSI and advised AeSI students on things to do before they begin a new semester as we speculated about AeSI results and criticized IIT video lecture series and ended with tips on getting training and jump starting your next semester and stated tips to get employed after graduation.

august
This month began with important dates for gate 2009 and then I listed catia training centers in India. And talked about various things related to AeSI, like prospects after AMAeSI, 6 reasons to do training after AeSI and listed 3 websites every AeSI students should visit.

apart from the I listed the problems with AeSI degree and had a system crash and ended with tips to apply for job requirements and remarked why IIT lectures are boon to AeSI.

September
This month began with quantity vs. quality debate and reposted
Bishnujee 's message of take pride in AeSI degree. told you about kung fu panda advice. and this month saw the launch of solidworks 2009 and I saw my worst resume ever. Told you about 3 things my mentor at NAL taught me and did a section a analysis of AeSI results, and urged students of AeSI to make syllabus book there friends. also informed you about few important changes in gate 2009 format that you should know about. and argued about having your network for AeSI graduates and students. And also posted advice from rolls royce.

October
I began this month by talking about the AeSI communities on web and reacted about the worst resume of my life. I touched subjects of NAL training and how to became consistent like Australian cricket team and asked AeSI graduates to remember certain things after they pass out of AeSI. and informed you about the chandrayaan project. I also shared study tips that I learnt from my math's teacher at GIE. and then had a long delay.

November
Most of November I was out of station and I had a long delay,and posted Pratt and Whitney single core fan. and became my shorted month of posting this year.

December
I told you about why I write this blog, about inertia, and shared 4 tips on handling exam anxiety and told you about Vijay Malaya and shared an important lesson that my boss at NAL taught me and asked you to see the biggest full moon of the year.

well this is what I did on the blog for the whole year. Do let me know if I missed on something important. I would like to thank all of you for reading what I have to say. Finmeccanica -tips for telephonic interview

It’s good that you have got a call. Well for preparations please do learn as much as you can from Finmeccanica site about the program that they are offering and what does Finmeccanica does. Know what they do and how you can fit into it.

Most of the questions asked in first assessment will be non-technical, more related to questions which seek demonstrated examples of behavior from your past experience and concentrate on job related functions. They will inquire about your motivation for getting into this program, why you want an international career.?

The questions will seek examples from your working life.

The questions that they ask are as follows

1. What is your motivation of doing this course?
2. Why do you want an international career?
3. Describe a situation where you have worked with people with different culture?
4. Describe a situation when you did something out of your initiative in your present or former job.
5. Tell us an experience in your previous or present job where you did play a critical role and had accepted a challenge and what was the outcome?
6. What do you know about Finmeccanica?
7. How do you work as a team, give one example where teamwork really helped?

Ponder on these points and be prepared with real-file examples out of your life to answers this question. This isn’t technical round.


Apart from checking your motivation for doing the course they will also see and judge your communication skills. So do take extra care on speaking slowly and clearly while on phone. They have a different assent and for them you have a different ascent so be slow and clear.

Also search Google for techniques for telephonic interview and adhere to them.

Here are some suggestions for tackling story-based questions

* Analyze your own background. What skills do you have (content, functional, and adaptive) that relate to your Finmeccanica objective?

* Identify examples from your past experience where you demonstrated those skills. How can you "tell a story" about your use of particular skills or knowledge? Remember that a good story has a beginning, middle and end.

* Wherever possible, quantify your results. Numbers illustrate your level of authority and responsibility.

* Be prepared to provide examples of when results didn¹t turn out as you planned.

Job Searching and Preparation for Job Interview

Job searching and preparation for the job interview should go hand in hand.

When you are searching for a job? Begin your preparation at the same time or well ahead of time. Sometime the short notice and a quick call can ruin the interview if you aren't well prepared.

Now you will ask how can I prepare if I don't know for which job I am preparing for?

Well use your resume as the job preparation guide. Its the one document from which your interview will begin and it is the place where the whole discussion technical or otherwise will hover around.

So begin your preparation from your resume. This not only focuses your actions but is much better than waiting for the interview call.

So if you are planning to get to the interviews in a month or two time then, get your resume updated and begin your interview preparation based on that resume.

AeSI graduates don't send your resumes if you can do this!!

In my recents posts I have talked about what to do in your resume. How
to answer interview questions? How to prepare for technical interview
but today I will talk about a very common mistake that AeSI guys do
while sending their resumes!!

First of all don't send a resume unless you know what is the job
requirement! Send one page job profile but don't just send your
generic because a friend of a friend asked you send it.

Get to know what the job is? Get to know what the requirement are and
then and only then send your updated resume.

Remember this, the job is not there as a charity, it's there because
of the organisations NEED! So don't insult the need by just send your
generic resume. Craft your resume. Polish it with answers to the
companies need!

Understand and respect this basic fact and I can put my words on this
that you won't miss an interview call!!

This post was prompted by a recent resume that I got in my email.
Tomorrow I will post about three things that are part of AeSI
graduates life but that you should NOT mention in your resume. So stay

Finmeccanica's selection process and my experience !!!

Finmeccanica calling!! This is what the ad states. Well I promised that I will come up with a post talking about my experience with the interviewing process. I must say I had a good and exciting time last year when I had a telephonic interview. I applied for the program very late, to be precise on the last date of submission. Although there was an option of filling up the form on web asking all sort of HR-type questions, I preferred sending a plain email with my resume and a little cover letter. The next day I got a reply and the next day I got a call from London asking me for a time for a telephonic interview.

As usual I took the other day off from NAL (I used to work there then) and stated there reading all the basic stuff I thought they might ask. I knew the interview won't be technical but will mainly focus on my communication skills and on my motivation for taking up the opportunity offered by Finmeccanica!!

So I prepared on those lines. As the clock struck 3pm, I surely got the call, with my mobile fully charged; I was ready with a pad and pen. As usual the questions were as anticipated, HR round type, why you want to do this course, why this international career? What do you know about Finmeccanica and this course and describe one incident where you have worked in a team and succeeded and then one experience when you have not succeeded? Questions were like this. Please be sure that when you are on the telephone, you talk slowly. Remember the other person is from another county so he or she might have a little difficulty understanding our assent. But apart from that just confidently state your experiences. I have studied in ISC board and I always like the English language test because they always had a question on writing essay and they were always prepared for us to tell a story unlike the state board English papers where essays means writing about pandit jawarhar lal nehru etc. Well my point is the interview here will present the very same opportunity!!! It will ask you real question and will demand real answers. So guys and gals enjoy the whole experience.

Question that they asked in GE interview

A few months back a good friend of mine went to GE for an interview for the post related to stress anlysis. I had an email chat with him about it. Here are the technical questions he faced while there.

1) what is the need of modal analysis?

2) Equation that computer solve for the above analysis?

3) what is the basic equation to find the natural frequency of any specimen?

4) question related to cantilever beam?

5) about project?


Apart from this above questions, there was questions on AMAeSI that he has listed in his resume. So i think Bishnujee's suggestion of using BE aero graduate is much more appropriate and you can explain it much better.

One cardinal rule that you must remember for any interview.

I have faced so many interviews and talked to many of my collegues who have conducted interviews and this rule always shows up and the interviee follwoing this rule had the maximum chance of being recruited...

The rule is


"Always answer questions with confidence, even if you’re lying"

Interview folks love to ask tough questions to see what kind of answer you’re going to give. So give an answer with confidence. The actual answer you give, whether in front of a group or talking one on one, is much less important than how you say it. Make something up if you have to. And when people try to confuse you, saying " Are you sure" Be confident and say yes!!

Well a friend of mine is in a turbomachinery company where the top management are not very conversant with the technical topics, but still when they are interviewing someone they toss some difficult technical questions and check how the candidate handle them. So just take this advice. What ever be the question. If they doubt you on an answer, be confident and stick to your answers.

One of the most common questions I got when in NAL was, “What’s the work you did in NAL?” The truth is that in a NAL, i did so many things from programming to analysis to designing, but that answer can only get you in trouble. So one day I will say I do design and analysis and the next day I will say that I did programming. Both answers are right, but I’m much better off giving one simple answer and saying it with confidence.
