Take pride in your AeSI degree

The moment i saw this mail and saw it was from Mr. Bishnujee. I knew i have to post it here. It needs a wider audience. It iterates the view that i have. Pride in your degree. Once you are in it. Believe in it. and Believe in yourself. As i have already pointed out here in this post that self confidence in our own degree is the need of the hour for AeSI.

Yes i do stand by the previous post of problems with AeSI degree and my unwillingness to recommend to my cousins. But i am as proud of the degree as anybody. From my experience at NAL i have told you already, AeSI guys are more than at par with the best aerospace engineers. All they lack is this belief in themselves. Many have previously pointed out this here, here and here. As i have seen this in my training days, if you are an AeSI engineer, take it to your heart that you are the best. If you have cleared AeSI honestly. You are equal to any aerospace graduate in the country or the world. And Bishnujee is the shining inspiration to us all!!!

Following is the mail of Bishnujee addressed to fellow AeSI graduates, engineers and students.

Dear AeSI Engineers & Students,
In recent times there has been sharp increase in criticism about AeSI Degree from various AeSI Engineers & Students. The pride in being AeSI Graduate is gradually fading out among newer generation of Aeronautical Engineers.I am not sure about the reasons behind it.If AeSI Graduates were not having strong Aeronautical Engineering background, they would never have received the Cayley Award 2003 from all major Industries of UK at Buckingham Palace in London on Nov 10,2003.
I know one major reason behind poor Examination result has been lack of proper training facility for AeSI students. There has not been enough pre-requisite check of students joining this programme which leads to student struggling in same. But anyway any Professional Membership Examination whether it is for AeSI or Engineering Council-UK examination for RAeS,UK where result is much lower than AeSI programme ,is never easy course work .
But as I have advised all students & Engineers coming out of AeSI to take pride in whatever you do in life.Until you take pride in whatever you do in life and feel confident that you are best in profession, you will always be lacking behind among your peers and fellow Engineers.
These are the qualities no Universities or Institutes can impart in you and you are solely responsible for developing yourself. What you learn in AeSI course work like hand calculation is the basis of Analysis of Engineering programmes which helps you decide whether the design is acceptable or not. Even if you work on Finite Element Modelling tools like Patran, Nastran,Ansys,FEMAP ,result you get should be compared using hand calculation to check whether they make sense or not and if there is any modelling error. These things you cannot do unless you are sound with you calculating and numerical skills of AeSI Course work in Solid Mechanics,Applied Mechanics,Strength of Materials,Aircraft Structures.

As I have mentioned numerous times in past that first choice after AeSI Graduation should be to work in Industry for few years, build strong foundation and based on your experience in Industry, then go for MS/MTech/ME in your career which you have been following. It helps in selecting right module which you have been working upon and you won't need further brush up while working at site or registering as Professional Engineer. Always bear in mind that AeSI Graduate with 3 years Engineering experience as full time Engineer is better than MS/MSc/MTech//ME with 1 year experience.Always Industry would prefer BE with 3 years experience in Industry first for job compared to MS or PHD with 1 or 0 year of experience.
There is no substitute for Industry experience. When I mention to you guys Industry Experience it doesn't mean working as Mechanic or Technician but only Design or Analysis Engineering whether in Aero Mechanical or Avionics Designing or Propulsion Design & testing.

Also Engineers who opting for Higher studies abroad are advised first to explore the Scholarships & Assistantship options as it might be expensive proposition doing it abroad since due differences in economy between different countries.RAeS UK administers Scholarships for MSc studies in UK.Please do bear in mind that applicants for RAeS Scholarships are not only from UK but from all across the globe with applications coming from NASA based Engineers,South African,European and Australia based Aerospace Engineers. So its highly competitive and one should be clear with his personal goals how MSc is going to benefit the Aerospace Engineer in his career.Just to mention that practical part of MSc is going to add his further knowledge acquired from AeSI won't be sufficient.Normally Industry only when its expects candidate to be very promising and excel in career is offered such competitive scholarships.Apply quite in advance before start of such course to avoid disappointment.
AIAA USA administer scholarship for MS Studies in US too.

There is no gain in criticizing AeSI Degree ,instead it would be better if you all who studying for same remain focused towards studies and do well in your exams and prospective career.Unless you have confidence and pride in yourself you will never be able to achieve any mission in life even if you get Degree from some very reputed Universities of the world leave aside AeSI.

I hope above information helps in achieving your goal.

Best wishes

As you can see he is passionate about this and i share this feeling. There's nothing wrong in expressing the wrongs of AeSI but what will ultimately matter is your pride and your self confidence. So be proud of the degree you have because if you won't then no body else will!!!

Walk-ins. 3 things to remember for successful walk-in's

Be the first. If the walk-in is on Saturday and on Sunday, you will have a better chance to be in for an interview if you go to the walk-in on Saturday.

First day early morning is the best time. Being first sets the agenda and since there is less candidate at that time, so your low experience/ relevant skills is bound to be overlooked in the initial enthusiasm.

If possible, have an existing employee's name on the resume. Like for the hcl walk-in, a referral name of an hcl employee, will increase your chances of getting to sit for an interview. Even if your experience is less, a referral from the company carries more weight and HR is more reluctant to turn you off.

Keep your first page of the resume relevant, all your relevant skills, experience, projects should come at that place. They should be up and front. During walk-in's the hr won't have time to run through all the pages of your resume, so highlight the relevant experience and have the numbers boldly displayed in the first page. This not only highlights your resume, but increases your resume's chances to stay a little longer in the recruiters mind.

Follow this simple 'rules' and you will have a much better experience of the walkin's.

And one more thing, always go to a walkin. Whatever be the experience of your previous walkin's, go to a walkin if you know it's in your domain. Don't worry about years of experience or skills, if its in your domain, its worth going to the walkin than sitting at home.

You will always learn something and if the time and opportunity is right, you might end up with a job offer. I know people who got job just because they decided not to sit at home.

In a latter post, I will discuss how to update your resume for a walkin, so stay tuned.

Resume tips from experience

Last week in OURAeSI club, there were 3+ messages related to job requirement... I hope everyone has seen them and appropriate candidates must have forwarded their resumes by now. But I was wondering how many of them had done it in the right way? I mean what was your checklist before you shot that email carrying your resume for the requirement listed?

Please do let me know in the comments.

Although I haven't sent my resume for a year now, but a year back, when I did, I had this 4 point checklist before I sent my resume to any job requirement.

Is the resume latest?

Do I have the cover letter?

Do my resume match the requirement or needs little adjustments?

Do I know anything about the company I am applying?

Let me elaborate on these points a little bit more. Is my resume the latest is the first thing I checked. Most of the time, it never was. I had to scour my resume back from the sent folders of my email account. Or from the my documents folder where it stayed unattended. Sure it always got updated. The areas which got modified were the dates of previous work experience. I quantified my work experience as 1.5 year (meaning 1 year 6 months), that changed as I progressed month wise. So I needed to include that and give my latest experience figures!  While in NAL, the skills section also got updated to highlight the skills I have picked up since my last resume update. And same thing happened to Project listing. Sometimes skills and projects not needed in for the current requirements were trimmed and re-adjusted.

"Do I have a cover letter?" was the second thought. To this I will emphasize from experience, I know that my all resumes that went with a cover letter brought me a response!! There was not a single instance that my resume with a cover letter didn't get me a call for the interview. I think having cover letter is must.

You can't put everything on your resume and you can't use fancy colors or highlight your resume too much for the risk of looking unprofessional, here cover letter comes handy and useful. A cover letter is one place where you can highlight the specific areas that you want your recruiter to see when they look at your resume. It serves as a good introduction to your resume! So never let a resume go by without a good cover letter accompanying it!

While in NAL, i did various kind of work, some of the work came under design like design of mixed flow compressor, some came under software development where I developed VB applications to do various design calculations and other got into the category of analysis, where using analysis packages to get result was the main responsibility. So having worked on varied kind of work, I had this standard resume, where I listed all my work, major, minor, design related, analysis related and software development related and Every time I had to send a resume, I used to adjust my projects to the requirements, plucking projects and its description from this master standard project-only resume.

Sometimes one project covered and overlapped many different categories. Like I had this project "design of mixed flow centrifugal compressor impeller”; now this had design and during the project I have to develop a VB application to design the compressor. So this project encompassed 2 categories. And having a standard projects-only resume solved my problem. When I said I needed to modify my resume for the appropriate requirement, I meant pushing the project related to the requirement up in the list and including more details to it. Removing the once that were irrelevant, trimming some which do not add much value. This way the resume had the consistency and I was at peace that I haven’t missed any project.

Sometimes, if the requirement was of design nature then the design projects were pushed up and I hightled the points on this project. Even in the skills section of the resume, the skills related to design got highlighted and were emphasized.  Sometime when I knew my work experience directly matched with the requirement; then I made sure that I highlighted the project in my cover letter as well.

Knowing the company I was applying for! Be sure to know what the requirement is and then use Google to search for the company you are applying for. It’s after this that you should craft your cover letter and update your resume. Your cover letter and resume should reflect that you know about the company you are applying for and are aware of the requirements!!

A resume cannot guarantee you a job offer, but a great resume introduced with a good cover letter can help you get an interview.

I am sure you will add your tips in the comments that I might have missed. So feel free to comment!!

Skills and tools for Avionics stream students of AeSI

I am not an avionics guy, and anybody knowing me would not contest on the fact that I like avionics in any remote way. Well to me it was stream many of my friends and acquaintance in AeSI choose, while I harped on to propulsion.

Here I write a simple list of skill sets that are required in avionics stream. If your chosen stream is avionics. Make sure you have exposer to these skill sets. To me most of them are Greek!!

I have gathered them from the emails I have received about job offers (which sometime trangely included avionics)! Please don't loose heart if you don't know all the skills. But be prepared and use internet to browse and learn about this skills and tools.

As my Mathematics teacher in standard ten always said "Having knowledge is always useful", so I present this info to just arm you, rest is for you to explore.

* Excellent skills in understanding and implementation of processes mapping to RTCA/DO-178 B Objectives

* Working level domain knowledge of Avionics systems such as Engine Control, Displays, Landing Gear, etc

* For Senior positions - experience in evolving Processes & Standards for safety critical SDLC will be an added advantage in selection

* Ability to analyze Systems & Interface Requirements, partitioning details and evolve the methodology for follow on SDLC phases

* Hands on experience in development SRD, SDD & ICD using Design tools. Knowledge of at least one Design methodology and associated tool will be essential

* Coding experience adhering to Safety standards.

* Experience in Unit, SW & HW Integration Testing, and use of associated Tools, IDEs, Target Processors, Rigs and Development high quality Test Plans, Test Descriptions & Test Cases.

* Avionics tools – SCADE, Teamwork, Matlab, DOORS, PVCS, Clearcase, Cantata, Ada Test, LDRA, RTRT, VectorCast or equivalent

* Experience in performing Reviews of Safety Critical Software will be an added advantage.

* Exposure to Protocols design and testing – AFDX, ARINC, CAN, MIL 1553 B BSP, devise drivers, Ethernet, TCP/IP desirable

Avionics is domain that relies very much in electronics and computers, so hone your computer skills. C is the language of the choice for all you avionics fellow. If avionics is your domain, then learn that language early in your student life. It will make a huge difference.

And Honeywell should be your target company!!

Best of luck guys and gals!!! Be sure to mention the skills and tools that I might have missed in comments.

Finmeccanica's selection process and my experience !!!

Finmeccanica calling!! This is what the ad states. Well I promised that I will come up with a post talking about my experience with the interviewing process. I must say I had a good and exciting time last year when I had a telephonic interview. I applied for the program very late, to be precise on the last date of submission. Although there was an option of filling up the form on web asking all sort of HR-type questions, I preferred sending a plain email with my resume and a little cover letter. The next day I got a reply and the next day I got a call from London asking me for a time for a telephonic interview.

As usual I took the other day off from NAL (I used to work there then) and stated there reading all the basic stuff I thought they might ask. I knew the interview won't be technical but will mainly focus on my communication skills and on my motivation for taking up the opportunity offered by Finmeccanica!!

So I prepared on those lines. As the clock struck 3pm, I surely got the call, with my mobile fully charged; I was ready with a pad and pen. As usual the questions were as anticipated, HR round type, why you want to do this course, why this international career? What do you know about Finmeccanica and this course and describe one incident where you have worked in a team and succeeded and then one experience when you have not succeeded? Questions were like this. Please be sure that when you are on the telephone, you talk slowly. Remember the other person is from another county so he or she might have a little difficulty understanding our assent. But apart from that just confidently state your experiences. I have studied in ISC board and I always like the English language test because they always had a question on writing essay and they were always prepared for us to tell a story unlike the state board English papers where essays means writing about pandit jawarhar lal nehru etc. Well my point is the interview here will present the very same opportunity!!! It will ask you real question and will demand real answers. So guys and gals enjoy the whole experience.

Best of luck!!!

If you have no clue of what I am talking, read the post Finmeccanica calling!!!!

Resume tips from satyam

Currently there are lots of requirements in OURAeSI and recently I posted
one of the requirements in regards to my friend Mr. Md Naimuddin for his
firm! He wrote back to me to relay these suggestions to you......

"
I got lots of resume for vacancies I forwarded you.

Plz tell our guys that plz mention there total experience before they start
there project detail that too in Front page.

As soon as any body will see there resume they should know there total
experience in there first sight instead of searching it.

Many of the guys didn't mention there total experience at all.

Even if they mention, they mention in such a way that we have to search for
there experience. It should not be like that no body like to search there
total experience or like to add the year they worked for different company.

Thanks a lot to all of you guys for sending ur resume. I will try to do my
best so that our guys will get a good opportunity.

And a deep hearted thanks to Mr.Sukhbinder Singh for making such a beautiful
platform to interact with our guys.

Thanks and Regard,

Md.Naimuddin
"

Apart from this I have 3 more suggestions for all the guys sending there
resume.

Don't send your resume without a cover letter.

Don't lie in your resume and know what you have written in your resume.

Your resume is the first thing that people will see , so be professional and
project a positive and confident look.

I have written lot of resume related and job searching related stuff at
http://www.ouraesi.org Read some of them to be prepared.

Best of luck guys and gals !

General structure of a cover letter

Resume without cover letter is like indian cricket team without sachin, hindi movie without song, job without a pay. So you see its incomplete. just like an hindi movie is incomplete without song, indian team is incomplete without sachin.... You are not doing job if you aren't getting paid...

Same is true with a resume, a resume without an accompanying cover letter just doesn't have the punch. Just like presence of sachin gives confidence to the indian team, a cover letter increase your resumes's success rate.

So increase your chances by attaching a good well written cover letter with all the resumes that you shoot off from your email.

Here i will show a sample cover letter and discuss the structure.
An effective cover letter must have an catchy introduction, professional main body and memorable conclusion.

{intro, write from where you have got the information of the job and it should also mention for which post you are applying for}

{highlight your experience relevant to the post you are applying, if the job is for catia, highlight the experience relevant to it, if its for propulsion highlight that one}

{Highlight one skill that is relevant to the post and the skills that you want the recruiter to notice while browsing through your resume.}

{Conclude showing you know about the organization. Research the company you are applying for and mention something in your conclutions that shows that you know about the company.}

Here's one sample cover letter.

I am interested in working as an {the post name} in your organization and applying for the job listed at naukri.com. I am a graduate of aeronautical engineering from aeronautical society of india, New Delhi.

I am a good learner with relevant experience as trainee in NAL & Indian airlines. I have worked on {write here things relevant to post you are applying}. Additionally i have been involved in the project related to {the things that you don't have so much idea but are relevant to the job you are applying}

As you will see in my resume, {write the things that you want to highlight in your resume, it might be the the extra skills combination, or any experience }

I have enclosed my resume as a first step in exploring the possibilities of employment with your organization, which is { write something relevant about the organization} { This step will show that you have done research on the company}

As an aeronautical engineer with your organization, I would bring a focus on quality and ease of use to your system development and performances of the work delivered to me. furthermore, I work well with others.

I would appreciate your keeping this inquiry confidential. I am really thankful to you to give me your precious time. Thank you for your time and consideration. Hope to receive a call from you.

Thank you
Faithfully,

Finmeccanica -tips for telephonic interview

I got the following mail...

Dear Sir

My name is Fahimudeen, I have got interview from Finmeccanica, can you provide me details for the first assessment telephonic interview so as to prepare. My interview is schedule to be on June 8th , If u send me details of what they are particular about. It will be great help to me to prepare, waiting for your earnest reply as early as possible.

Fahimudeen .K

and here's my reply

It’s good that you have got a call. Well for preparations please do learn as much as you can from Finmeccanica site about the program that they are offering and what does Finmeccanica does. Know what they do and how you can fit into it.

Most of the questions asked in first assessment will be non-technical, more related to questions which seek demonstrated examples of behavior from your past experience and concentrate on job related functions. They will inquire about your motivation for getting into this program, why you want an international career.?

The questions will seek examples from your working life.

The questions that they ask are as follows

1. What is your motivation of doing this course?
2. Why do you want an international career?
3. Describe a situation where you have worked with people with different culture?
4. Describe a situation when you did something out of your initiative in your present or former job.
5. Tell us an experience in your previous or present job where you did play a critical role and had accepted a challenge and what was the outcome?
6. What do you know about Finmeccanica?
7. How do you work as a team, give one example where teamwork really helped?

Ponder on these points and be prepared with real-file examples out of your life to answers this question. This isn’t technical round.

Apart from checking your motivation for doing the course they will also see and judge your communication skills. So do take extra care on speaking slowly and clearly while on phone. They have a different assent and for them you have a different ascent so be slow and clear.

Also search Google for techniques for telephonic interview and adhere to them.

Here are some suggestions for tackling story-based questions

* Analyze your own background. What skills do you have (content, functional, and adaptive) that relate to your Finmeccanica objective?

* Identify examples from your past experience where you demonstrated those skills. How can you "tell a story" about your use of particular skills or knowledge? Remember that a good story has a beginning, middle and end.

* Wherever possible, quantify your results. Numbers illustrate your level of authority and responsibility.

* Be prepared to provide examples of when results didn¹t turn out as you planned.
What did you do then?

Hope this helps. Best of luck and keep us informed.

How to Make your CV stand out of the crowd?

A job portal sent this email to me today. Sharing the same with you so that you can benefit from this.

Make your CV stand out of the crowd, here's how:

  • Update your Resume: Updating your resume tells recruiters you are interested in a job switch, which increases their interest in you. It also showcases your latest skills, responsibilities, and achievements. For best results your resume should be updated every three months.
  • Have an updated Resume Headline: A specific resume headline that contains key words that employers might be looking for increases your chance of getting recruiters attention quickly. For e.g. a headline "System Architect with 10 years of experience in designing Java Based Enterprise Applications" could attract immediate recruiter attention.
  • Highlight Key Skills: In mentioning key skills, be as specific as possible. For instance, rather than using generic words like 'Sales', it always helps to be specific and say 'Institutional Sales for ABC Product'.
  • Highlight Key Achievements: Mention objective and measurable achievements. For e.g. saying "Increased Sales by 20% over a period of 6 months"instead of "Increased Sales for my Company" could make the recruiter contact you instantly!
  • State Experience Clearly: Recruiters prefer looking at numbers than subjective terms. For instance they would want to look at "15 years of development experience" than "Ample development experience"

Very good points.

so get going and update your resume, even if you are not planning for a job hunt!!

Confessions of an AeSI guy from HAL- another gem from OURAeSI

I really enjoy these diaries, so am posting them here in this blog too as gems of ouraesi!!!! Keep up the good work anupam!!

HAL Diary 4

Dear friends

it has been long time since last i shared my experiences with you since joining HAL as due to work and all i was a bit busy. but i received so many mails from so many friends who wanted me to continue sharing my experience.
Our true training started since i came to HAL hyderabad coz here only i got to see the work culture learning the things in practical way , interacting with so many experienced people.you also get to apply your own ideas and thoughts. but the best part of them all was being a part of so many prestigious projects like LCA , Sukhoi 30 etc directly or indirectly.

and ofcourse i also learnt the hard reality that grass is not always greener on the other side.Being in a public sector has its own disadvantages and it always doesnot work out the way u think. you have to fight for everything . you would feel that things should be done in this way but you cannt do that . initially we had to fight for everything as our sudden presence as Grade II officers was not accepted pleasantly by many. facilities provided were no better and everybody was taking their own sweet time in listening to our complaints. but once we stood united and raised our concerns upto Corporate office everything was provided overnight.

so many other problems too like workers , unions etc but in the end its all part of game. u have to make your own way .
life at hyderabd has been a bit difficult initially for most but people like me who had lot of experience of chennai and AeSI didnt face much of the trouble. in my batch about 50 trainees have come to HAL hyderabad and it really feels good to be the lone Aeronautical Engineer in the lot. infact i haven't come across anybody joining as Grade I or Grade II being aeronautical engineer. and i do feel proud when i introduce myself in the hall full of people.
being together with so many regular college students has also taught me that except from lack of practical knowledge we are no way less than them . infact i found that they all know just about their own engineering stream and that too partially. unlike them i found we know so much more and in vast subjects. even being from avionics i can talk about engines or mechanics or electrical or workshop technology . well i guess thanks to multiple attempts in "Principles of flight" and "electrical" papers. and i tell you after seeing my work and knowledge nobody questions my credentials.

and now the biggest benefit of being in public sector is the great social life. we have enough time to enjoy to relax to play . we have swimming pool to relax ,table tennis , an indoor badminton court where we play badminton even upto 12 in the night.

so it has been about 3 and a half months at HAL Hyderabad and it all has been great learning experience. our next phase of training is in bangalore at HAL management Academy from there we will go to IIT Kharagpur or chennai.

HAL is recruiting in large numbers as there is shortage of manpower . so for aesi u need just 60pc to apply . currently 400 positions are there for engineers . package offered is 5.18 lakh CTC. so u can see lot of scope for all of us.
i will keep sharing my experience.

regards
anupam goyal

7 Reasons Why You Should do Internship

How can a person get a job since There is a huge gap between academics and industry ..?

We have syllabus which is almost half century old and this industry is at latest technology than how we are capable for its job..?

What we shall do to fill gap between academics and industry ..?

Answer of all above question is to do internship.

What is internship ...?

if we look at Wikipedia than it states as An internship is a job training for white-collar and professional careers. Internships for professional careers are similar in some ways to apprenticeships for trade and vocational jobs, but the lack of standardization and oversight leaves the term open to broad interpretation.

which means that you can have insight of an industry by having internship.

As a fresher it will be a added point to as compared to others when it comes to a point of job searching.

There are many advantages of having internship which you get read from here .But to be brief i will summarize that article bellow

  • Gain work experience and transferable skills
  • possibly earn money
  • Be able to experience a prospective career path
  • Gain practical experience
  • network with professionals in your field for reference and future job opportunities .
  • Develop new skills and refine others
  • Gain confidence in your abilities.
More I will be sharing in the next articles .
Please do share your thoughts and experience about internship in comment section.

3 things to study before you head for an interview.

I was involved in couple interviews this last month and as I was experiencing the interview process once again I got reminded of the basics that a person going for interview must study before he heads for an interview. So I jotted down the main points of this post as I awaited my call for the interview along with the other candidates.

1. Study the requirements clearly.

This is the first step, not knowing the requirement is just like not know knowing where to aim at, not knowing what to shoot and not knowing  where you are headed. So first and foremost point is get to know the requirements, what are they looking for, what skills they desire, how much experience they want and have listed on the requirement.

2. Study your cv.

Yes your CV, the CV that brought you to the interview, ascertain what attracted your resume to the requirement, what your CV has that makes you good for the job, how the skills and experience listed in your cv matches to the requirement and what are the skills and points that you can highlight during the interview from your CV that match with the requirement.

3. Study your projects and basics of what you have written in your resume.

Take special note of the experience and the projects you have written, rehearse what those projects are and be prepared to tell someone in simple terms if you are ask you to explain a particular project, know the basics of the projects. If you have done a project on transient performance analysis of gas turbines, be prepared to answers with the questions on gas turbine basics. Likewise if stress analysis of centrifugal compressor is your forte then be prepared to answers basic questions regarding stresses and compressor.

Will studying the above 3 things will only help secure you that job? Well yes it will help but articulating what you know in the interview will be the main deal. So practice your answers before hand. Don’t have a bookish answers but do have general idea on what and how to answers. Frame your answers based on your knowledge of the requirement, on what you written on your cv and to highlight the skills that are required for the job. Answer in a way to highlight the points on your resume that fit with the requirement.

So this are some of the ways one can prepare for a technical interview. Remember that in an interview (or in a job) you will only succeed if your skills, experience and most of all your interest match!!

Gather RIGHT technical experience

I can't really add anything to this but Shashank Sharma has nailed it aptly in this recent mail.

Friends,
The problem with the quality of experience gathered by trainees under AeSI
OJT programme or for the trainees entering under unpaid scheme is :
Most of the trainees are given a low priority work, which might be
beneficial to the organization but does not cater for the right
professional development of the trainee.
Of course there are examples where trainees were either assigned to a
project of high importance thus providing them with sufficient technical
challenges which leads them to gather a good experience, write and
present PAPER(s) in symposiums, but examples like these are few.
In order to gather RIGHT technical experience from any organization, my
advise to budding engineers is to follow few simple steps as follows:

1) Identify the key areas in which a particular organization is working.
Internet, discussions with friends/seniors can provide this information.

2) Brainstorm within yourself and come out with your interest of work
area. The work areas can be more than one as well. for example stress
analysis, dynamics of rotating structure, catia designing of components,
3-D modeling and analysis, performance calculations, CFD, technical
publications, programming to create a thermodynamics module, control
system design..........the list can be endless but it all starts with a
personal initiative.

3) Approaching the organization for the correct person at correct time,
with your preference of work area. The candidate should also request for a discussion with the concerned HOD prior to be on-board. This discussion
can channelize and streamline the expectation of the employer and
employee.

Please bear in mind that career planning is not just gathering credentials
and roaming company to company for interviews. Its a chain of strategies which you which needs to be implemented prior to execution.

All the best for your future endeavors !!
Thanks and Regards

Worries and confusions during training

Today someone emailed me with this following content..... Since it's the end of my project so I am pretty busy, so I forwarded the mail to my good friend kishore for the query. And he has exactly expressed my sentiments on the matter.

I am posting this email and kishore's reply so that any other person in the same situation should have the right guidance at that time.

Respected sir,

I have given my last paper of propulsion stream and I am waiting for my result. And i am working in National Aerospace laboratories as project trainee and my project is Design a single stage of transonic compressor and generate a blade profile. for this i am using Fortran95 and I developed a small program for rotor .

so I want to know whether there is scope of such coding in fortran and if I completed my graduation this time then is there opportunities to work in coding . Whether companies use to consider such a predgree experience. kindly suggest me some of the companies where I can apply.

Other thing is I got selected in InfoTech Bangalore as a Assistant design engineer

But they want me to work in Technical Publication as they have Pratt & Whitney engine.

I have to sign a bond of 3 years and they said depending upon performance they may send to Canada for on job work. so I need your suggestion which way is better whether its good to work as trainee here in NAL or grab the job.

I am in confused state of mind and unable to make decision so kindly help to make decision

Thanking you

Kishore replies.....

Dear ankush,

Well first of , I would like to wish u all the very best for your results. Now coming to your mail , well you asked 2-3 questions , your first question is that whether there is enough scope for FORTRAN coding these days or not.

First of all by going through what you have written in ur mail , I believe you are doing some decent work in NAL as project trainee. Another thing is that although FORTRAN is considered as a old scientific programming language but in the recent time , during last two years I have seen loads of requirements of FORTRAN Programmers. Mainly for the development of simulation software's used in aerospace and other engineering domains.

But I would like to add one thing from my own experience here that just having some idea about FORTRAN language and understanding FORTRAN programming are two different things. Let me tell u one thing , if u r sure that u have a sound understanding of not only FORTRAN but also the programming concept and not just the language , there are enough opportunities available outside. Just remember this same thing applies not just to Fortran but to everything u r doing.

I believe the combination of work u r doing (i.e. turbomachinery + programming ) is in much demand , just be very confident about whatever u r saying u know. If u r working on turbomachinery like compressors then try to expand ur understanding of it and atleast be very confident about the basics.

Next thing is that ask one question to urself that if the money factor is removed then are you happy with the kind of work you r doing in NAL and do u think that u r learning something new. If yes then my personal opinion is that please spend some time in NAL and complete your learning process because after NAL u will not get much opportunity to learn so don't worry about the predegree experience thing , just concentrate on what u r doing and learn it fully, use ur time in NAL, don't waste a single hour coz this time in NAL will take u to places in future. I have seen many previous students just like u who did the same kind of project which u r doing in NAL , they worked hard and impressed everyone with their efforts and today all of them are well settled and doing very well and offcourse earning very well also.

So stop worrying and don't get confused. U r about to become an engineer, so be very confident n try to feel the work u r doing.

Now as far as joining InfoTech for technical documentation is concerned then there are ways of looking at this . if u r in a very serious financial crisis and the situation is like u need money at any cost then u can join anything offcourse technical documentation also and earn money . but if r not in that kind of situation then I would advise u not to join infotech for technical documentation and spend some more time in NAL. After doing ur project in NAL successfully u will definitely get much better opportunities , I m sure about that.

If InfoTech offers u job in any other domain like engine division or design department then I can say ok join but in my opinion don't go for technical documentation now. I believe u still have time to give ur future a much better shape.

Look a job is a job but technical documentation is certainly not a very creative type of job. And in longer run I can tell u from my experience that no matter how much u earn but it is the kind of work u do which brings the satisfaction. If u r not doing the job which u feel is exciting and interesting then u may loose ur energy and confidence and even u may loose respect among your peers.

So u r at the right stage to decide what kind of work u want to do in future , just imagine urself in that environment and start working towards the realization of that environment. If u put a little effort everyday, u will definitely get it.

The companies in which u can try for (Fortran + turbomachinery )are:

1: GE

2: Geometric softwares

3: NOUS infosystems (though not in turbo machinery)

4: Honeywell (mainly ask for C programmers + turbomachinery knowledge)

5: Infotech

6: SAFRAN and many others.

Another suggestion is that keep track of market requirements and start preparing urself don't wait for any call , prepare urself in every aspect in which an engineer should be prepared.

Again I wish u all the very best for all ur future adventures.

Take that risk

If you want great things in your life, the choice is clear. It’s time to step up to the plate and take that risk. – The Simple Dollar

To grow in any department of life taking the leap is important. Taking the courage is the first thing you have to take. Be it the choice of your stream in section B or the choice of training or the choice of opting for job instead of higher education or the choice of changing your job.

If you are given two choices staying put and not deciding is not a choice. Higher rewards come with risks. So if you are faced with a decision. Take stock and decide. Decision is the choice that you will make. If you don’t decide then you are at the risk that you will follow the decisions other people or circumstances will make for you.

As I was working in NAL as project engineer, I had this opportunity at a software firm to code in Fortran, that was one decision I needed to make that time. My mentor at NAL wanted me to go for an aerospace related job, mine inclination wanted the freedom that comes with earning decent money and the ability to explore the field of software development that I was passionate about.  I was torn between working in an engineering service related jobs many of my friends were joining and the lure of developing software that made all this possible. My natural inclination that time was to delay the decision but fortunately I couldn’t and i decided to go with the job and opted it. And I am happy I did so because I shined in that job and when I left the company after two years I was the revered team member of team and had the invaluable experience of working in a software company.

It was unique and had helped me grow and learn. That time I knew I was taking a risk of migrating to software where I had studied for aerospace engineering but I wanted that experience and I am glad I did it and now at a new job my skills and the experience is helping me a lot.

To achieve great things, the choice is simple take the leap.

In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.   Roosevelt, Theodore

In the moment of decision, a choice whether wrong or right is much better than no decision at all.
