Don't go to an interview if you .......

Don't go to an interview if you don't know what bypass ratio is!

Don't go to an interview if you can't answer the question "tell me about yourself" in 3 short lines!

Don't go to an interview if you don't know how to defend what you have written in your interview!

Don't go to an interview if you don't know the basics of your core  domain!!

Don't go to an interview if you don't know how to talk and lead the  interview!

Don't go to an interview if you don't know what the job profile is!

Don't go to an interview if you feel your sad, 'bogus' institute story will fetch you a job!

Don't go to an interview if you don't know have an iota of knowledge of what the company is working in!!

Don't go to an interview if you are not prepared!!

Interview is not AeSI exams that you can give with whatever preparations you have.

In Interview, you are not a student, so stop behaving like one. It never helps and it never will!!!!

Be a professional.

Don't go to an interview if you have.... Part 2

Why the rant about 'Don't go to interview if you....'?

Well yesterday a friend of mine was in the process of taking an interview. An AeSI guy, who is doing apprenticeship in NAL came for the interview.

That post highlights all the mistakes he did during the interview. We were so angry over the way he handled himself, so i came up with that post.

If you are coming for an aerospace interview then expect questions on gas turbines and you aren't allowed to say that I haven't studied that. It's your limitation not mine. So spare us that excuse!

A fresher's resume should be decent, should have the right amount of the projects. Too many projects in the resume definitely raise a warning bell. Be sensible and take great care while putting them in your resume.

And above all, you need to defend your resume, you submitted it, so as an interviewer I fully expect you to at least know what you have written in the resume.

And last of all. Professionalism !!

Please be a professional. It's not about you. The company is not a charity institution to help you get stated in your career, it's business and you need to provide and show the potential to be a use to it. Otherwise you are as good as the chair you are sitting on while in the interview.

This reminds me of the interview advice Gururaj gave years back to all AeSI graduates!

Always remember, friends can lead you towards an interview, but getting inside after that is entirely on you.

Hope this and the previous rants on interview will be helpful for the your future interview attempts.

Good luck

Interview Questions !!!!

Dear friends,
There were several times I have seen nervousness on the face of my candidates before interview, It's just because lack of knowledge about the questions HR is going to ask. Hence I suggest everyone that before going to interview, one should prepare for it & should know about the company, the projects for which company is hiring and all......  Preparation and confidence are very important. Good preparation always creates confidence. So the important thing to an interview is to be well prepared. In this you have to consider two things:
  1. You must prepare yourself practically for the interview.
  2. You have to gather information which is useful during the interview.

Please find the below given links which will help you in preparing for the interview and in building up confidence

Questions asked in Honeywell Interview.

Questions asked in HAL Interview
Question asked in various companies @ Embedded Systems for Avionics domain

beside the above links, Internet is the best source to prepare for the interview.

Good luck to all..........

How to answer interview questions?

Recently there was a recent walkin and I heard many Aesi folks went to
it but many fizzed out in the technical rounds after clearing the
test. So Here are some thoughts on how to give answer interview
questions so next time you are better prepared.

Start with a bang.
Always begin the interview with what you know, start from your
strength that is the bang I am referring at.

Don't answer what is asked but answer to lead.
Answering and answering properly are two different things in an
interview, so answer intelligently. Remember you are the leader in
your interview, so answer in such a way as to lead the next questions
to your area of strength.

Basics should be clear. Explain from that point onward.
Whenever your are asked a question, begin from basics, lead the
interview from there. Explain the basis and answer the question than
just giving a one line answer. Interview is not just about the correct
answer, it's more about the thought process that went behind that
answer.

Be confident. Go to the interview as they need you not you need them.
Be confident but not be obnoxious.
State the truth but always in positive light.

Interview is just like a tiffin box. Each compartment has separate
dish. This is how you should present yourself. Don't give every thing
at once. Separate the stuffs and present it best. You might know a lot
of things but successful interview is all about presentation. The
better way you present yourself and your skills, the better your
chances of getting that job.

Superior credentials vs good interview skills - How to ace your interview?

Come March, April and Interview seasons are on. Companies go out to
hire, to consolidate bench strength or to replace the non performers!!

But what is it that you should possess. Superior credentials or good
interview skills. Ideally the former will do but life is not ideal. So
the the latter is the one which decides the outcome of your job
interview!!

You might have all the correct training, have worked with the right
customer, but all will come to none if you don't know how to answers
questions in an interview.

Composite training, fem training at iisc, project work with top Indian
scientist will come to a not if you are not able to present them well
in your interview.

Catia sheet metal knowledge, patran's 3D meshing or icem projects will
not help you unless you know how to answer an interview.

So along with having superior credentials, learn more about how to
answer interview question. What to say? How to say it?

4 Reasons Why Resume is the Best Preparation Guide.

In this blog I have always advocated making resume as your preparation guide for any job interview. Though I have already mentioned it why I think so but today I thought why not summarize the whole points here. so here we go my Top four reasons why resume is the best preparation guide.

  1. The resume is your first impression to the employer. The first thing that connects you to the employer, to the organization. You will be called for an interview based on the contents of the resume.
  2. Your first question will sprout from this very soil. What you write here will decide the question that the interviewer will ask and begin interviewing you. Its this document that will chart the path of the your interview and the alleys and nooks you will visit during your interview.
  3. The resume is structured so your preparation can go in a structured way. With a resume, when you prepare for your interview, you won’t jump here and there. Keeping the resume handy will help you see what you need to read on and what are the things you need to prepare for the interview.
  4. As resume is a document that gives an overall picture of your career and education, so keeping it open while preparing for the interview questions will help you get more focused on what to talk in the interview and how those answers relate to your overall career. Your resume helps you see the big picture while framing your answers for the interview.

well that’s it. I have just barely touched the surface , please do add in your comments.

5 things to remember while in an interview.

Being in an interview is like giving a driving test. There's lot of
similarities between this two tasks and lot can be learned if you
think it this way.

Streering wheel.
In am interview, you are at the steering wheel. You steer the
interview not your interviewer. He/she might start it but you have the
control to steer it to your comfort and strength zones.

Follow the road rules.
Just like on road, interview is not free form riding. Follow the rules
of curtesy. Listen to the questions. Understand what is asked. Then
reply. Blazing all about your accomplishment with no regard to what
is been asked will take you no where!!

Sudden acceleration and brakes won't help you.
Give a smooth ride. Sudden busts of excitedness and dullness can ruin
the interview. Be consistent in what you have written in the resume
and what you are telling in the interview.

See the bends.
Just like roads, interviewer will not give you straight roads. He will
throw in some bends. Make sure you know understand them. Just like at
real bends, in an interview slow down and think before you answer.

Stop at red signals.
Interviewer expressions and manners are the signals you should look
at. They are there for you to guide your way. Stopping at red signals
and moving at green is the only way.

Hope this fresh look at the interviewing process will cement the
correct mannerisms that one needs.

3 things to study before you head for an interview.

I was involved in couple interviews this last month and as I was experiencing the interview process once again I got reminded of the basics that a person going for interview must study before he heads for an interview. So I jotted down the main points of this post as I awaited my call for the interview along with the other candidates.

1. Study the requirements clearly.

This is the first step, not knowing the requirement is just like not know knowing where to aim at, not knowing what to shoot and not knowing  where you are headed. So first and foremost point is get to know the requirements, what are they looking for, what skills they desire, how much experience they want and have listed on the requirement.

2. Study your cv.

Yes your CV, the CV that brought you to the interview, ascertain what attracted your resume to the requirement, what your CV has that makes you good for the job, how the skills and experience listed in your cv matches to the requirement and what are the skills and points that you can highlight during the interview from your CV that match with the requirement.

3. Study your projects and basics of what you have written in your resume.

Take special note of the experience and the projects you have written, rehearse what those projects are and be prepared to tell someone in simple terms if you are ask you to explain a particular project, know the basics of the projects. If you have done a project on transient performance analysis of gas turbines, be prepared to answers with the questions on gas turbine basics. Likewise if stress analysis of centrifugal compressor is your forte then be prepared to answers basic questions regarding stresses and compressor.

Will studying the above 3 things will only help secure you that job? Well yes it will help but articulating what you know in the interview will be the main deal. So practice your answers before hand. Don’t have a bookish answers but do have general idea on what and how to answers. Frame your answers based on your knowledge of the requirement, on what you written on your cv and to highlight the skills that are required for the job. Answer in a way to highlight the points on your resume that fit with the requirement.

So this are some of the ways one can prepare for a technical interview. Remember that in an interview (or in a job) you will only succeed if your skills, experience and most of all your interest match!!

Two basic questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview?

I don't know where i read this but i had this as a text file in my work computer. I am posting it here as i know it will help aesi folks preparing for interveiw. This answers two basic questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview?

Question: What’s the ideal length of a resume in a world where every resume is electronic and not viewed printed out on paper?

Answer:

A page. Still. Your resume is a marketing document, not a summary of your life, so every line should be about an accomplishment. The more amazing your accomplishments, the fewer you need to list. For example, if you can write “Evangelized Macintosh and made it one of the most beloved brands in the world,” then you don’t need any other sales and marketing bullets on your resume.

If you have totally lost perspective, and you think you have two page’s worth of incredible and relevant achievements, consider that hiring managers spend ten seconds evaluating a resume, and a scanner looks for ten keywords, which certainly fit on one page.

So unless you have a great connection with the hiring manager, and you know he’ll look at both pages, don’t bother sending them. And if you do have that great connection then you are probably going to get an interview even if your resume sucks.

Question: How should I prepare for an interview?

Answer: An interview is a test you can study for. So memorize answers to the fifty most common questions. Most interviewers ask standard variations on standard questions, and there are right answers to these questions.

Whether you are a stripper or a CIA agent, the answer to the question, “What is your weakness?” is a story about how your weakness interfered at work—in a specific situation—and you overcame it. Most of your other answers should be stories, too. This means you need to make them up before you get to the interview. Stories of your life are memorable. Lists of your life are not. Be memorable if you want to be hired.

Another way to prepare is to go to the gym right before the interview. It doesn’t matter if you never go to the gym—although you should, because people who workout regularly are more successful in their careers. You should go right before an interview because people judge you first on your appearance, and if do heavy lifting with your back and stomach muscles you will stand up much straighter in the interview. This will make you look more confident, which is half the battle in being judged by appearance.

Ps: I will make a credit as soon as i find from where i got this info.

How to prepare for interviews?

Preparation for interview and preparation for exams is two different
things. One can't apply the same preparation techniques in these
situations.

Exams needs through indepth study while interview seeks a overall
knowledge.

Interview revolve around what you have presented in your resume, while
exams deal with topics of your syllabus.

Interview are oral and more dependant on how you present what you know
while exams need the exact anaswer to a specific question.

Exams are close ended and have fix set of question in a limited time,
while interview is free flowing, with no set questions or time
constraint.

Best thing about interview is you can lead it to your own way. You can
steer it to your comfort zones. Learn to do this very thing and you
will be clear every interview you attend!!

Three different kinds of interviews

Yesterday I was talking with my friends about interviews. We were
sharing our experience at various interviews, from small to big. As
the discussion was on full swing someone remarked about 3 kinds of
interview.

The first one is someone has already decided he will take you, but
just uses the interview process as decoy.

The second kind is where you are already decided out and the interview
is just to let you out.

And third kind is the one when you are seen as a good prospect and the
interview explores your length and width of your knowledge. This type
is the most rare but the most fullfilling experience.

I have encountred all these types of interview and everytime the third
kind is the one I genuninly learnt something. This interview kind is
when your hitting score at each question is not important, your
thought process behind the answer is.

Well remember this type of interviews when you are in an interview. If
it's the first kind? Don't worry you are already in, just cruise. If
it's the second type don't get stressed, they are just whitewashing.
Be bold in this interview and learn more about giving correct answers
than getting a job. And the third kind is the most usefull. Answer
genuninly and honestly. Flanking is allowed so enjoy your good answers
and learn.

The success in the third kind depends on you! Whereas in the other two
the interviewer holds the key.

An Interview that will help you.

interview-aesi-progress

Someone I know is going through an interview process and he was kind and generous enough to send me the list of question he was asked in his interviews.

So for the benefit of all, here are the question. For privacy reasons, identifiable data has been stripped and changed.

Yesterday I gave an interview in ABC company  for the post  AB Engineer. I've cleared all the rounds including the one taken by the Managing Director and my final interview is on Saturday. I don't know what will happen but I'll try my best. I'm sharing the interview questions asked by me so that It can be helpful for others through My-AeSI blog.

Round-1

- I developed good professional relation with the H.R. through LinkedIn so my first round was easy. He just asked me about my educational qualification & career objective.

Round-2

- Tell me something about yourself ?

- You have done engineering through correspondence mode so how did you manage practicals ?

- Tell me about the projects you have done during academics ?

- What is your career objective  ?

- What is Avionics and what all subjects have you studied in Section-B ?

- You have not made any aircraft related project, all of your projects are of Embedded & Robotics. Why ?

- Tell me about your strength ?

- What is the role of embedded system in Aircraft ?

- Where do you want to see yourself in next 5 years ?

- Being an engineer, Why are you doing M.B.A. ?

Round-3 (With the Managing Director)

- I'm giving you 5 minutes. Let me know about you, your family, education, projects and all in detail.

- Why are you interested in engineering management ?

- Even though there are thousands unemployed engineers in Bangalore so Why should I recruit you ?

- I'll be investing lots of money on you, projects, clients and all... After 6 months or 1 year, you'll learn the technology and join any other company. Why should I give you this opportunity ?

- How you can contribute to the field and the company ?
- Okay I'm assigning you a task. Have a look on our website, understand what we do ? and so on... and then send an email (letter) to the H.R. on "How can you contribute to this company ?"  If I like your letter, I'll call you for final session and It'll be around 30 minutes discussion.

I've sent him the forwarded email. I hope I'll get a chance to give final interview. I'm sharing it so that It can be helpful for others.

Hope this helps everybody and don't forget to mention and send your thanks and good luck to the thoughtful guy who shared this information in the first place through the comments. I am sure he will be reading them.

Thank you.

Use this google templates for effective interview preparation

Google announced the addition of google templates to its online docs service. I am big fan of trying things out. So i took the task to look at this templates and found many that students as well as graduates of aesi can put to good use.

Here's one tool that will be helpful for all aesi guys who are preparing for interview. The Interview Preparation template is a good start to prepare for the interview.

Why?

Let me allow google to answers that....

"Before heading out to interviews for jobs or programs, every student [graduate] should complete this template. By practicing and writing one's own story and anticipating questions, students will feel confident and prepared. "

Basically the template has few questions. You answer them. This helps in your preparation as you write things down. This is just like practicing the interview questions before a mirror but more concrete. So click this link and write in your answers. Trust me this little exercise will be very helpful once you are in the interview.

How to prepare for M.S. interview…?

Firstly I would like to congratulate to everyone who had received interview call letter for M.S.(By research ) from IIT Madras…..As you had already received call letter for interview that means 50 % of selection is in your favour ,now to make 50 to 100 % you have to prepare nicely for the interview.

Unless in the case of M.Tech. Where admission solely depends upon your GATE rank rather than your interview , M.S. is the case where interview matters the most .So here it goes,

Tip 1: 1st make up your mind , In which specialization you want to work weather its structure, fluid, propulsion.

Tip 2 : Go through all the basics of the specialization .for example : if you wish to do MS from thermal than you must be well in 1st law,S.F.E.E.(steady flow energy equation) and its application,2nd law,3rd law, what is Cp,what is Cv,unit of Cp.This simple simple thing matters the most…..all they want to know is your basics is right or not ……for fluid : study continuity equation, momentum equation ,energy equation, bernoulli's equation ,fluid statics ,kinematics and dynamics .again MAKE YOUR BASICS CLEAR.

Tip 3 : If you don't know anything which they had asked ,tell them frankly that you don't know or you had studied but you are not getting it right now…..DON'T TRY TO MAKE THEM FOOL BY GIVING RANDOM ANSWER by this way you are just decreasing your chances of selection .

Tip 4 : Don't feel nervous for the interview .they all will make you friendly by asking some personal questions .

Tip 5 : In case you get stuck ,while you are giving answer they may help you by suggesting some things so keep your ears open and listen to each and every word they are saying attentively .you can also ask for their help ….

Hope it had helped you to get some insights of the interview.
If you had another question than feel free to ask me…

Thanks,

Modi Pritesh

DRDO SET interview questions for mechanical

I don't know what has happened? When i was aesi student, every year DRDO SET figured in our discussion and ouraesi had the same share of discussions but for last couple of years it has totally diappeared from an aesi student's life. I mean i have not heard anyone talking about it, there is no mention of it the ouraesi club.

Can anyone reading this update me, what's going on in regards to DRDO SET? Can an aesi folk give the DRDO SET test? I know he can. So why is the group and aesi folks silent about it. Why no discussuion. Has DRDO gone out of aesi's folks radar?

Anyway, i was browsing though my old harddisk, back from my aesi days, i found this good interview summary. It was stored as a plain text file in my computer, so i have no idea where i got this from, if someone knows the person do let me know i will mention the credits.

Basically the guy who wrote this was doing mechnical engineerring and these is the synapsis of the whole DRDO interview process that he went through after passing DRDO SET exams.

My Comment:
This was not a stress interview. They listen me patiently. Whenever I said I don’t know the answer they have provide me clue for answer.

Well that's it. So what can we aesi folks can learn from the whole script. What is your favourite subject is one of the important question in any technical interviews and more so if you are a fresher. This is where the whole technical interview revolves. See how many questions are centred around the answer the guy gave about his fav subjects.

In my next post i will post another DRDO interview that was posted in ouraesi long back in 2003. There are lot to learn from it, not only about the DRDO interview process but also about interview handling techniques in general.

Finmeccanica -tips for telephonic interview

I got the following mail...

Dear Sir

My name is Fahimudeen, I have got interview from Finmeccanica, can you provide me details for the first assessment telephonic interview so as to prepare. My interview is schedule to be on June 8th , If u send me details of what they are particular about. It will be great help to me to prepare, waiting for your earnest reply as early as possible.

Fahimudeen .K

and here's my reply

It’s good that you have got a call. Well for preparations please do learn as much as you can from Finmeccanica site about the program that they are offering and what does Finmeccanica does. Know what they do and how you can fit into it.

Most of the questions asked in first assessment will be non-technical, more related to questions which seek demonstrated examples of behavior from your past experience and concentrate on job related functions. They will inquire about your motivation for getting into this program, why you want an international career.?

The questions will seek examples from your working life.

The questions that they ask are as follows

1. What is your motivation of doing this course?
2. Why do you want an international career?
3. Describe a situation where you have worked with people with different culture?
4. Describe a situation when you did something out of your initiative in your present or former job.
5. Tell us an experience in your previous or present job where you did play a critical role and had accepted a challenge and what was the outcome?
6. What do you know about Finmeccanica?
7. How do you work as a team, give one example where teamwork really helped?

Ponder on these points and be prepared with real-file examples out of your life to answers this question. This isn’t technical round.

Apart from checking your motivation for doing the course they will also see and judge your communication skills. So do take extra care on speaking slowly and clearly while on phone. They have a different assent and for them you have a different ascent so be slow and clear.

Also search Google for techniques for telephonic interview and adhere to them.

Here are some suggestions for tackling story-based questions

* Analyze your own background. What skills do you have (content, functional, and adaptive) that relate to your Finmeccanica objective?

* Identify examples from your past experience where you demonstrated those skills. How can you "tell a story" about your use of particular skills or knowledge? Remember that a good story has a beginning, middle and end.

* Wherever possible, quantify your results. Numbers illustrate your level of authority and responsibility.

* Be prepared to provide examples of when results didn¹t turn out as you planned.
What did you do then?

Hope this helps. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Job Searching and Preparation for Job Interview

resume-job-anyone Job searching and preparation for the job interview should go hand in hand.

When you are searching for a job? Begin your preparation at the same time or well ahead of time. Sometime the short notice and a quick call can ruin the interview if you aren't well prepared.

Now you will ask how can I prepare if I don't know for which job I am preparing for?

Well use your resume as the job preparation guide. Its the one document from which your interview will begin and it is the place where the whole discussion technical or otherwise will hover around.

So begin your preparation from your resume. This not only focuses your actions but is much better than waiting for the interview call.

So if you are planning to get to the interviews in a month or two time then, get your resume updated and begin your interview preparation based on that resume.
