15 Tips for EXAM PREPARATION by Mr Rahul Verma

 All of you are preparing for your exams and most of you are left with three or less papers in sec b, so this may be your last semester of AeSI exams. Next sem most of you will complete your degree.

I know these are the most tensed moments for a society student when he has last semester to complete section B. Question keeps roaming in mind “will I be able to clear the degree this time or not?” What if any of one paper is left? “Again I will have to waste one more sem”

Most of the students start losing their confidence due to peer pressure. And even they are good in knowledge and worked hard full of sem, they fail in one or more papers.

I want to ask WHY TO LOSE THE BATTLE JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR LOW CONFIDENCE??

Try to keep grip on your confidence, I’d tell you few thing that I did and helped me in my last sem of sec B.I will be very happy if it may help you:

1) Just keep in mind: jo bhi karna hai, jitna bhi tension lena hai, bas es sem hi lena hai...etni mehnat krni h ki next sem exam na likhna pade.

2) Plan breaks during your studies, use your most of the time for your preparation by avoiding tiredness.

3) It will be excellent if every day you can write test on previously asked question papers, if yes then do it for all the three subjects every day and mark your mistakes. If you do it for ten days continuously just before your exams then you will get solid confidence and good chances for clearing the papers.

4) Plan your syllabus and write chapter-wise tests on theory and numerical portion for each chapter. Do it in such a way so that most of the things/things where you are weak will get covered in your test.

5) Collect the things on one separate note that you need to revise frequently. List out all the formulas equations and important diagrams use minimum words and use symbols and drawing pictures to minimize the words. It will help you to revise faster.

6) For example if you usually forget the formula to be used in exam then write one test on the formulas only, it may look foolish but later after exam you will find how useful it was.

7) Complete your revision few days before the exams anyhow and plan for writing the test and correction self.

8) Divide your day in to two halves, in one prepare the questions and revise the theory and in second half write the test on the chapter/s you decided earlier.

9) It will boost your self confidence and you will be able to identify where usually you do mistakes in exam.

10) Just circle your mistakes with red pen and write the correction in front of them.

11) In case if you have two or more exams continuously then mix the questions from all those subjects in your question paper and write a detailed test. It will be proved very helpful in exam if you could do this.

12) Now before your exams you need not to revise full syllabus, you can revise most of the things by reviewing your test papers itself.

13) Post the formulas short notes in your room wall, bathroom, and toilet or in kitchen so that you can utilize your time most wisely and efficiently.

14) Keep your weekly and daily plan right in front of you where you sit to study. Write those things on board that you need to do later to avoid missing them.

sir, i would suggest if there is provision to speak out rather stay
dumb and listen to the person standing on the podium , please someone
gather the courage and point out the negligence of AESI on our
students members, we are asked to fell proud of our board , how is it
possible to do something when you are not doing from your heart? this
negligence of AESI and a total revision of the entire curriculum have
to be brought out , to make us student fell proud in what we say and
what we do, other wise it would just be an alumni meeting not a
effective conversation,
and if possible try to broadcast it through youtube or other means, so
that student all over india are motivated,,,,,,,,,

Well this comment just made me realize that people don't know what
people associated with aesiaa are really doing.

Let's zoom out a little.

Aesiaa is a not for profit alumni association formed by group of aesi
graduates. Aesiaa does not pay them. They work as volunteers and pitch
in their time and effort while carrying on with their daily life.

It's very easy to dismiss the efforts if you don't see this dedication.

In the agm every aesi member in Bangalore got the invitation to
attend, but just a handful of aesi graduates turned up.

And about not being heard. Well you can't change a system in one day.
Two years back aesi didn't even recognize aesi alumi association but
efforts are continuing. Now they are commending our work.

Those seniors who are part of this are doing their bit, slowly and
steadly we are becoming a force to recon with.

But as I said earlier, this isn't our job. We have a life outside aesi
and unlike many other graduates, we have not chosen to disconnect from
aesi once we graduate. Instead we have chosen to stay connected and
connect everyone involved.

'Keep in touch' Study technique

Keep in touch. It's as simple as that. If you keep in touch with what
you are studying and is being taught in the class, you don't have to
toll hard during exam time.

By this i am reffering to follow active revision policy. Revise
everytime. Revise at the start of the study session, revise at the
end of the study session and setup a revision day.

So make a revision centric timetable. Sandwich your study hours with
small slices of revisions. Do recall and summarize session for 3
minutes before every study hour.

This simple change in your study routine can help you leapfrog way
ahead of anyone.

6 smart things you can do today to give a great start to your semester.

Here is a list of 6 tips for all AeSI students to give a great start to your new semester.

1. Set a fixed routine.
   Identify the time you will study and the time you will nor study. Fix it.  
   
2. Set minimum hour of study and keep it low.  Maybe just two hours of study at the beginning of the semester is what you want. Keep it light. The aim is to set the minimum hours and stick to it.
   
3. Plan to use the first waking hour productively.
   Once you fill the first hours with the most important work rest of the day you can use to whatever that comes to you. So think about what is the most important task of your life right now and schedule it to the first waking hour of your day.
   
4. Set reminders of the your goals.
   We fall short of goals not because we have low potential but because we forget our goals. We forget to do revision. We forget the intention for which we are working. So set reminders. 
   
5. Set one day for total fun activities.  No Study Day.
   Choose a day when you will not study. Will not do anything related to AeSI and career development. This is your recharge day. Use it to recharge. Be active in all other actions. Try including sport activities.
   
6. Research and set one base book for each subjects that you have for this semester. Setting one base book gives you consistent definitions and understanding. Hoping books is like going to ten tuitions for one subject. Gaining too little with so much hard work. so be smart, stick to one book for at least the first 3 months of the semester.

All the tips that are mentioned above can be implemented right now. so what are you waiting for. Go ahead and create a successful semester.

Results.

Stop thinking about results now.

In a weeks time AeSI exams wil begin so concentrate on your revision
and review.

Don't fuss over the results, stop all your mental calculations about
which paper you need to pass, what will be the question paper like
this time. Stop all this loop thoughts.

Concentrate on your review and revision. Let you mind go though all
the material and believe in it. It will supply all the required
information when you need it.

So that's it.

Revision time for AeSI exams

AeSI exams are upon us. In next few days exams will be the primary
attention of an aesi students life.

It's so intriging to see how like a major sports event, the attention
of the whole aesi shifts to exams during this time of the year.

But does anyone know when aesi exams are actually starting. I have no
idea. I am hoping perhaps someone will fill me in with this information.

Meanwhile it should be revision time for you guys and gals.

Revision is all about review. It's asking question on what you have
already studied. It's giving yourself a short focused quiz on a
particular topic. It's about doing numerical problems randomly from
various topics without looking at the answers. It's about checking
your understanding of the topic.

So go revising. Idealy this should be the bulk of your study time.

Five ways of study to crack AeSI exams

I have already restated all this before but again it needs a reminder.
Aesi is tough. It needs more time, more effort and more concentrated
effort. So here are five simple yet powerful ways that one can
incorporate in his or her study habits to crack AeSI.

1. Study with the syllabus book. Read all the topics. Pick and
studying just what is taught in the class is not sufficient, one need
to study systematicly and cover all the topics listed in the syllabus
book. It did cost me twice in my aesi exams so don't ignore the

2. Go for the basic theory. Master it, digest it, marinate on it, chew
it. Once all this is done go for the questions, just reading onces and
solving tons of questions won't help. Understand and digest the basics

3. Pen and paper study. Don't just use your mind and fingers to read
and study. Get a rough copy and pen. Draw brainstrom and study. Don't
just write the definitions draw them, connect the new info with the

4. Revise everyday, every topic. Whatever new you study revise it the
next day, the next week and thereafter. This helps you to keep you

5. Read thoroughly. Read the full chapters. Read the full text. This

4 reasons to follow revision centric routine

1. It takes time. 2. Its not fun. 3. We assume no one else does it.
And 4. We feel its silly. Well these are the four reasons you have to
overcome for starting a revision centric routine. But if you can do
all this now, you are on the way to a successfull semester and career!

Revision technique to boost your studies

Today learnt a great revision technique from one of my teammate in
office.

We are all attending 5 days training on some new technology and today
was the second day. Yesterday, we began at 8 and finished at 5 with
some good topics and hands on. Today morning he entered and he took
out a sheet of paper and rerun all the things that we did last day.

So how can you apply it in studying for aesi.

Take a paper, and before you begin to read new text, new topic or new
material. Write on the paper all the things that you have learnt the
previous day on the same subject. Ask questions on what you read and
answer them. No need to be clean, concise or correct, just write.
Write whatever you remember. Imagine the terms and get them on paper.
Run through the topics one by one.

Well that's it, once this is done, turn the paper down and get back to
study the new stuff.

There are 3 distinct advantage of this technique.

1. You poke your mind and exercise it to get active and retrive the
information it received earlier. Just by remembering and writing it
out you strengthen the ties.

2. This exercise at the start of your study session sets up the mood
to study further, to learn more and to dive deep.

3. The old things and topics that you bring forward by means of that
paper creates additional pegs that you can hook the new informations in.

Well I believe if you follow just this method, you are well ahead in
your studies. Try it!

How I used to setup a study routine for next semester

Setting up a routine was the first step that I took when I was in aesi?

Just before the announcement of aesi results, I used to sit and take
stock of my time and subjects and made a routine for the upcoming
semester.

I didn't follow the routine always but most of the time routine gave
me the ability to just begin. It automated many of the decisions I had
to make when sitting to study.

Since I had already assigned fixed hours to a particular subject, so I
didn't had a dilemma of what to study next? All I needed was a glance
at the routine, and I knew where my next hour is going to be utilized.

Here are some of the points that you might find useful while making
your own study routine.

1. Decide how much time you have per day. Keep it modest. Early
enthusiasm points that we can should alot the maximum hour available,
but the best strategy that I found is set a resonable minimum hours.
Set the number of hours that you are sure you will put into study no
matter what.

2. After the hours, decide on the subjects. Ponder on the lengh and
the structure of the subjects? Are they all theory or all numerical or
which section dominates

3. After deciding on the hours and the subjects, now is the time to
fit the subjects to the time available.

4. But before that, set the first half hour or an hour, whichever is
convenient to revise what you have learnt the day before. Yes revising
should be a part of your study routine. Begining early will enable you
to keep everything fresh. As the semester will progress the lengh of
revision hour will increase.

5. After the revision hour, set 30 mins a day ( any time you like) to
do exploration. This is the time when you just explore any topic that
you studied that day. It's not study but a time when you can dig
dipper and learn about a topic more deeply. You might want to use
wikipedia or google or a magazine or off course book for this kind of
exploration. This enables you a fresh prespective and keeps the
interest alive.

6. For the Rest of the remaining time, fill in the subjects, mix them
well. Theory with numerical and vice versa. The idea is to keep the
interest alive and not to be burden with studies.

7. Last and the most important point for making your own study routine
is think your week to have 6 days!! Yes 6 days!! Keep one full day
off. No studies on that day. That day is reserved for any hobby,
networking or anything that you are passionate about. This is the day
you test your passion, experiment and just live. An unplanned day
within 6 planned day will help you navigate your study ship to its
correct destination, help you ponder on your progress.

Hope this points will help you write a routine that maximises your
efforts in time for a fruitful next semester.

After this all that is required is execution. So come on execute.
Commit to yourself that you are going to follow this routine for the
next 30 days. And then do it. If you can continue for the 30 days, it
will become a habit.

So after making the routine, commit the next 30 days for following it.

3 things to remember in the examination hall

Whatever you study, how you study and what part you study doesn't
matter as much the way you spend your time in the examination hall!!

This was very true for me, I lost priciples of flights paper because
of that and got through in workshop technology and thermodynamics and
electrical papers.

Here are 3 things that one should do in the examination hall so that
one can perform well in the exam.

A. Keep calm. Yes the ovious advice but it's the one that is mostly
needed. If the examination paper is easy, don't jump in joy. Keep your
cool and begin calmly, taking one step at a time. If the paper makes
you curse aesi, burn goyal, etc. keep calm and relax. Take a deep
breadth and concentrate on the parts that you know and begin from there.

B. Be in the present. During the exam hall don't go back to the past
or to the future. Stay right there in the examination hall. Don't
think of results, don't think of the next exams. Stay and keep your
mind locked to the exam you are giving. This will ensure you will give
your maximum to the questions.

C. Revise. Revise all that you have written. Read the questions
again and check if you have given the correct answer. Read my previous

Bonus: Time your answers. Yes time management is crutial. Getting all
the answers done in the amount of time alloted always comes as an
advantage. Don't time your individual answers. The best way that
worked for me was deciding on the number of questions that I will do
in 60 mins. It didn't matter how long I took at one particular
question but the aim was to finish alloted number of questions in time.

Have a great exam guys and gals!! Do good preparation and have a
positive and confident attitude and reach for the stars!!!

Take a Test

The best way to see how much you have learnt, how you are progressing is to take a test.

I did this often in my AeSI days. In fact this was what my Mathematics teacher in class X,XI and XII did when he gave us 3 problems to solve before he began his class. I learnt more from his revision technique than anything else. If you also want to employ it in your studies then read How to study mathematics.

Why taking a test is so successful? It not only keeps you informed about your progress but doing that helps your brain to stay away from the routine and it keeps your brain cells some exercises.

So take test as often as you can, close your books and take up a mental stock of the concepts you learnt. How they fit in your life? How can you explain them to your younger sibling?

The best question to see if you have really understand the concept of something then just answer yourself mentally how will you explain the concept to your grand mother?

I did this exercise a lot and many concepts that I explained through this mental exercise are still intact in my mind. Explain the working of gas turbine engine, What is FEM, explain oblique and normal shock waves, what is moment of inertia were some of the topics that I employed this trick.

So carry on this exercise next time, when you begin your study, take a simple test and mentally rehearse what you learnt in the particular subject the previous day!!!

I will give month by month update on what has happened in this blog. January

January began with a mail from a trainee in NAL and then there was good news for AeSI community and then I wrote one informational post regarding special information for AeSI student members and informed u about 59th AM of AeSI. Wrote about GPA and a small post regarding MS in aeronautical and turbo machinery in UK and US. Then there was Bishnujee’s response to AeSI's student membership cancellation after 8 years. and I end the month with Mistakes fresh AeSI graduates do in their interview.

February
AGM news in Hindu and waiting and announcement of results were the major news in this month, followed by announcement of Tata's entry in aerospace domain. Then I also did AeSI section A results comparison. and had some problems in posting... and wrote after exams what

March
Tips on resume from satyam, and I exclaimed about no enews from AeSI and asked you all best way to search job....and discussed  two basics questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview and also warned graduates of AeSI on how to send resume and how to edit resume in a professional way.

April

No April fool for this month as I wrote about one cardinal rule that one must remember about interview. and posted my first ever Friday links. and posted about aerospace events of the week and about a new catia training centre launch.and touched upon 3 glaring mistakes AeSI graduates do. And posted links for online GATE preparations and preparing for aerospace interview. also shared GE interview questions,solidwork video tutorials,open letter to anna university.

May
May was the busiest month. posted about catia video tutorials,tips to pass AeSI exams,do and don'ts for AMAeSI exams, DRDA SET, and announcement of AeSI exams.

Also posted 7 signs of unprofessional resume. how to fail exams, tips for getting most of revision and revisited how I cleared my workshop exam and posted the map of examination centers of AeSI along with the announcement of Berlin air show and ended with actions that will take your career ahead.

June
This was the exam month and apart from exam related stuff I posted about industry CAD usage data, and informed you about the technical interview questions after DRDO set. Apart from this tools in aerospace and highlighted a cool tool to find tutorials and other eBooks for learning catia, solidworks. Apart from CAD programs I listed some useful jobs links for AeSI graduates and gave a general structure of a cover letter and talked about will I recommend AMAeSI to my friends and family. Informed about IIT course materials on YouTube.

I also gave general advice on 6 things that you should do in your last semester.

July

This month began with an unsuccessful contest that I ran, told you about how to accelerate your job search, resume sending tips and asked you are you taking gate 2009 exams?

I answered the question I want to work in core field, told you about Olympics and aerospace connection and updated you on the farnboroug air show and DAE university's decision to cancel aerospace and aviation program. Asked you which is the best study center for AeSI and advised AeSI students on things to do before they begin a new semester as we speculated about AeSI results and criticized IIT video lecture series and ended with tips on getting training and jump starting your next semester and stated tips to get employed after graduation.

This month began with important dates for gate 2009 and then I listed catia training centers in India. And talked about various things related to AeSI, like prospects after AMAeSI, 6 reasons to do training after AeSI and listed 3 websites every AeSI students should visit.

apart from the I listed the problems with AeSI degree and had a system crash and ended with tips to apply for job requirements and remarked why IIT lectures are boon to AeSI.

September
This month began with quantity vs. quality debate and reposted
Bishnujee 's message of take pride in AeSI degree. told you about kung fu panda advice. and this month saw the launch of solidworks 2009 and I saw my worst resume ever. Told you about 3 things my mentor at NAL taught me and did a section a analysis of AeSI results, and urged students of AeSI to make syllabus book there friends. also informed you about few important changes in gate 2009 format that you should know about. and argued about having your network for AeSI graduates and students. And also posted advice from rolls royce.

October
I began this month by talking about the AeSI communities on web and reacted about the worst resume of my life. I touched subjects of NAL training and how to became consistent like Australian cricket team and asked AeSI graduates to remember certain things after they pass out of AeSI. and informed you about the chandrayaan project. I also shared study tips that I learnt from my math's teacher at GIE. and then had a long delay.

November
Most of November I was out of station and I had a long delay,and posted Pratt and Whitney single core fan. and became my shorted month of posting this year.

December
I told you about why I write this blog, about inertia, and shared 4 tips on handling exam anxiety and told you about Vijay Malaya and shared an important lesson that my boss at NAL taught me and asked you to see the biggest full moon of the year.

well this is what I did on the blog for the whole year. Do let me know if I missed on something important. I would like to thank all of you for reading what I have to say. 4 tips for handling exam anxiety during the examination

AMAeSI exams are here and here is some of things that I did in my exam time. All of this has helped me in my exams. Hope they will help you too.

Don't get excited. Keep things calm. If the paper is good don't jump. Calmly begin answering. If questions seem to come out of mars don't panic and revolve your eyes in the examination hall. Be calm take deep breath and attempt the next question that you know.

If you get stuck. Pause and then think hard. If this works, good if it doesn't, don't push yourself hard. Pause… leave some space and carry on with the next section or question... this usually does the trick for me. Down the line I used to get a hint of the question I was stuck and I came back to it.

Keep a close watch on time but don't be too tight on it. Time not one question but take a more general approach. Instead of saying “I will answer 1 questions in 20 minutes!!” Define “I will cover 3 questions in an hour.” This works more than keeping a question wise timing. Some questions might take  long while some less time but you should put 1 hr 3 questions as your time target. This enables you not to look at time very often.

Lastly in all examination paper do keep last 30 mins for revision. its must!!

How to revise.

Put the answer sheet back. take the question paper read the questions you attempted and formulate point wise answers. After you covered all question check and optimise any of the answers you might have discovered while revising.

How to study mathematics.

There is a line of thought which says Mathematics is a difficult subject. But it shouldn't be so. In my college days I have so many of my friends squint in the name of mathematics. some loved it absolutely while others just did it because it was part of the course.

For me mathematics has been a favorite subjects since standard 7. It was in this standard that I leant about the beauty of mathematics and the powerful technique of revision that I am going to share with you here.

I have to say that the greatest lesson that I had from my school days sir was about studying maths and about revising.

He made maths easy and as far as I can say he made us understand the importance of revision.

What was his technique? It was simple but elegant. Whenever he came to class, he went for the blackboard and scribbled some numbers like this

exercise 1 : prob 3
exercise 2 : prob 6
exercise 4 : prob 4, 6

and gave us ten minutes to solve the problems he listed on blackboard. So what was unique. He never began teaching us new topic before we had a practice of the what he has already taught us. He never minded if we cheated as he said, do it with open book but learn so you can apply it in exams and in life later.

How can one apply this concept for learning anything?
Maths has problems like this propulsion 2 is a good candidate as it contains lot of problems

so apply this simple method and i know you will excel in maths. I sure did !!

Exam stress busting tips.

Exam times are here and i have seen from my experience that we, the students, often panic before an exam because we are so worried about our performance. This makes it even harder to do well. What should we do? This is the topic i wanted to explore/ Though in my previous post "de-stress before you the examination hall" i have highlighted some of the tips that i had from my experience of taking AeSI exams.

General exam stress-busting tips:
Believe in yourself.

Some tips for getting the best of your exams and study times.

Be confident. confidence comes with preparation. so prepare well, get your syllabus book in hand and get going. i missed some topics in my exam days and had to re`-give the exams just because i missed parts of the syllabus.. learn from it.


The best advice my mom gave me was to study regularly and not keep thing till the end and i have applied it in my days of aesi. But if that is not the case with you and you see a heap of syllabus staring at you,then begin with small steps. Break the whole syllabus up in topics that you already know, the one that you have studied, the one that you consider easy, the one that is small, the one that is big, the one that come in exams most of the time. Then begin doing the easiest one. This is the technique of picking the low hanging fruits. See your syllabus as a tree,before you begin to climb get the low hanging one. Then prepare for the other one. Make a list of topics in a paper, keep it always in front of your study desk, strike off the topics as you do.

Everyday schedule a time for revision. one hour everyday. As exam approaches this time should increase.

your study time should always be divided into 2, New study hours and Revision time. Just at the beginning of the semester new study hours will dominate your total study time but then also always have at least 1 hour revision time. This is must as this enforces you to recollect what you have already learnt.In the revision hour you recall what your are learning in your new studying time. As your semester progresses, new study time decreases as more and more syllabus i covered, and this time begin increasing your revision time. And just before the exam time the time of revision should be the max.

Best memorization and retention occurs when you discus the topics. In your spare time discuss the topics of you have studied with friends and if no friends in interested, take a virtual class in your imagination. Use your imagination. Image you are taking a class, you are the teacher and teach that topic. See yourself drawing and explain the topic in detail in blackboard, See yourself answering the doubt of your students. I bet you will remember the topic for life.

Groups study are famous, Well they are good but do them only for new study time. New study time is when you are learning or reading a new topics. But revision should be alone. Revision time is the time when you recapture what you have learnt in your new study time, so keep the distraction to minimum and do it alone.

According to the article, studying slightly different subjects from the one you want to learn makes your brain work harder to store the original information.

For optimal brain gain, take regular small tea breaks. Sip small quantity for optimum brain activity.

More impressive the information the easier it is to learn than others. So find impressiveness in the things you want to learn.

Learning new things actually strengthens your brain — especially when you believe you can learn new things. It's a virtuous circle: When you think you're getting smarter(that is thinking positive), you study harder, making more nerve-cell connections, which in turn makes you ... smarter

With "Do the Right Drugs" wired is talking about drugs but i'll say eat green vegetables, eat right.
