Make syllabus book your friend

Collecting books will not help you... go with the one book that is available.. use it as your base book and take up the syllabus book. its more important,..

Don't decipher the syllabus from the previous year's question papers take a proper syllabus book and then move ahead.

I had to waste a full semester because I forgot or by passed this simple fact. This cost me 6 months as i have to give principle of flights exams again. It so happened that i thought i was well prepared for flights exams, I have covered all topics, even in class that I took I did everything

but then when I was handed the question paper I saw that more than 30 marks came from a different section that I have not touched. My first reaction was its out of syllabus....as I came to room the first thing I did was to get the syllabus book and was amazed that section was there in the syllabus book and the questions they asked came directly from the topics mentioned there.

So my advice to all AeSI students is go ahead and bring that syllabus book to your regular study table and open it.. study from it. Refer it often and study....

AeSI exams: Don't forget the syllabus book

It's may and it's the time when aesi students are mostly attached to
the books, it's the time when books are integral part of aesi students
life. Yes books do feature everytine but this is one time when you see
more books related to studies on aesi students hand. Well this was the
way it was when I was in aesi, hope it's the same now!!

What I want to tell everyone studying for the upcomming aesi amaesi
exams is get the syllabus book in hand when you study.

I have two instances in my aesi exam experience that not looking at
the aesi syllabus book cost me 6 months!! So keep the aesi syllabus
book handy!! If you don't have it, look for it, xerox it but keep it
open when you study for the exams!!! I can't emphasize it more!!

Most of the time questions in exams are on the patterns of how
syllabus is organized. So take advantage of this fact!!!

Five ways of study to crack AeSI exams

I have already restated all this before but again it needs a reminder.
Aesi is tough. It needs more time, more effort and more concentrated
effort. So here are five simple yet powerful ways that one can
incorporate in his or her study habits to crack AeSI.

1. Study with the syllabus book. Read all the topics. Pick and
studying just what is taught in the class is not sufficient, one need
to study systematicly and cover all the topics listed in the syllabus
book. It did cost me twice in my aesi exams so don't ignore the

2. Go for the basic theory. Master it, digest it, marinate on it, chew
it. Once all this is done go for the questions, just reading onces and
solving tons of questions won't help. Understand and digest the basics

3. Pen and paper study. Don't just use your mind and fingers to read
and study. Get a rough copy and pen. Draw brainstrom and study. Don't
just write the definitions draw them, connect the new info with the
already present information. Connect different topics and strengthen

4. Revise everyday, every topic. Whatever new you study revise it the
next day, the next week and thereafter. This helps you to keep you
immersed in the subject. Helps you quicly connect the new to the old

5. Read thoroughly. Read the full chapters. Read the full text. This
is where the main core is. Justing reading once and concentrating on
solving questions, papers won't help you. Read throroughly. Read
thrice. This is the only way to get to imprint what you read on your
minds canvas forever. This is what will help you in the long run. Aim

July is the month when student of AeSI are free, not with Colgate tooth paste. But free from studies :). After the exams either they are home or are pursuing other interests. For some it’s the month to come to Bangalore for further training and other stuff. Special information for AeSI students
This is an information I posted about AeSI ‘s announcement of not continuing the old syllabus. So from this semester onward, there will be no distinction between modified and un-modified syllabus.


What are your views for the modified and unmodified syllabus? In one community that I am member of most of members were in favor of the modified syllabus. I have had a glance at that syllabus and I guess it’s more relevant and structured and although you get more subjects but it includes good stuff and is really well. If I were to do AeSI again, I will choose the modified syllabus.



Where can i learn NASTRAN and CATIA?
This is an old post that keeps popping out. It was the post that I wrote back in June 2005 after the AeSI exams and waiting for AeSI results to be announced. It was the time when I was lazing around in my home town Kolkata and was searching for a CATIA and NASTRAN institute. I researched some of them and travel to some and that post basically sums up my conclusions. It’s still relevant and I hope to add to that topic as soon as I get time. Surprises

Standing at the other side of AeSI, I can tell you students out there. Hang in there. Yes its frustrating, the examination and the results most of the time do not match. Sometimes questions that came are not meant for exams, Sometime 80% of the questions are coming form a  single topic, or sometime the question requires a long explanation but has only tiny marks are allocated to it.

Sometimes the questions are just the repeat of the last semester  questions. Sometimes its just the combination of 2 or 3 papers question picked and juggled and sometimes its entirely new in pattern and topics selected.

Studying does make you tackle all this but what is needed is the mental discipline, mental effort to see through the surprise.

Natrajan Sir once explained the best way to tackle this is to keep yourself  prepared. expect to be surprised then only you won’t be surprised. One gets surprised only when he/she is too concentrated on the examination papers and shuns the syllabus book. So the best strategy is to begin with the syllabus book, then as you progress in your studies get question papers onboard.

Question papers are to give you a familiarity of the exams, they are there to check yourself on your preparation. Don’t fix too much on the question paper and the pattern, don’t study based on what question papers seem to suggest, study according to the syllabus book.

How to Study in 30 days

In my mail I had quite a few querries from some students of AeSI who
say they have less time and how can they utilize the time so that they
pass the 3 or 4 subject they are appearing for this time.

I believe that regular consistent study is the best way. But I know
life throws circumstances when you are into situations where you begin
your studies just days ahead of exams. For those situations here is
the list of things i would do.

Take it as a challenge.
Take the task as a challenge . Think it as a goal that you have to
reach. Make aggressive changes in your daily routine to get to this
challenge. Shun self pity and make moves to get the maximum of your
time. Time and productively with which you will study is the key.

Concentrate on two subjects a mix will be better.
Doing 3 or 4 subjects is lot. Since time is limited. It's better to
Choose two subjects and give your maximum attention to them. It's
better to be passing two subjects than stuggling with time to study
all 4. Bake two subjects carefully rather than having all four
subjects half baked.

While choosing the subjects, choose subjects that are different. One
theory based one numerical based. This way you can divide your time
between this two and won't feel bored studying the subjects most of
the time.

Take the syllabus book.
As always, with the subjects choosen get the syllabus book and begin
your exam preparation. Cover the topics as listed in the syllabus book.

Read all the already read and previously read stuff. Complete the
basics of all the topics. Study with a plan. Study with pen and paper.
Draw and make connections on what you are studying.

Take the question paper solve the easy parts.

Don't plan to cover all but get to cover 80%

Plan a schedule and action on how to tackle all the different types of
question you get in that particular subject

Begin with simple stuff
Begin with the known. To retain what you learnt revise daily. Talk
about the topics you study. Connect new topics with the old topics
that you already know.

My biggest mistakes in AeSI as a student

We all make mistakes. Some small, some big, some significant, some
trivial, but if we learning something from them then they are all worth.

Here In this series of post I will present some of my biggest mistakes
of my AeSI days!

1. Once I skipped exams thinking I am not prepared well. It was
flights paper and I thought I was not ready and I skipped the exam on
last moment and then paid the punishment for it for two more semester.

2. Not studying by the syllabus book. Again in flight I studied
everything that was taught in class, I had all the notes, I studied
from Anderson, kermode, and all other books and when I went to the
exam hall, I saw 30 percentage of question coming out of syllabus. I
cursed aesi.

And when I come home and tried verify any claim of outside of syllabus
question paper I saw how untrue that was. Those questions came from
the topics that were listed in the syllabus book. I was shocked that
some of the questions came from topics that were listed in the very
first line of syllabus.

3. Another big mistake that i did was I stopped following a teacher. I
thought he is not teaching well and I stopped attending his clases.
This didn't improve my studies but it nose dived the discipline of the
tutor.

As the tutor rolled over, I deterioted in that subject.

This were my biggest mistakes as an aesi student. I will keep this
theme alive and will post more on my other mistakes.

5 things not to do in AeSI for AMAeSI exams

In today's post I will discuss 5 things NOT to do when you are in AeSI
and aiming to clear AMAeSI exams. They are from my experience of going
through aesi. Hope they will chart a path for you and you will avoid
them in your journey.

1. Don't skip the in basics
I did this in fluids and though I passed the subject in first attempt,
but I had a tough time when I encountered those basics again in
aerodynamics-1. So remember to cover the basics before you delve
deeper. In mathematics II, basics came handy for me as the paper
revolved around it.

2. Don't forget the syllabus book
As discussed in many previous post, you will automate and streamline
your study schdule if you study a subject with the syllabus book. Not
only syllabus gives all the topics in logical order but it will make
sure you don't miss any.

3. Don't skip exams, whatever be your preparation.
This happened to me, I thought I have not prepared well for principles
of flights and so I didn't go to the examination hall. That turned out
to be a grave mistake when I saw the question paper, later that
evening. And that mistake cost me two semester in which I had to study
flights. So whatever be your preparation, don't skip the exams. If
nothing more you will train your mind to be the examination hall.

4. Don't lie about your results.
After the exams don't lie about your results especially from your near
and dear onces. I have seen how students falsedisguise their results
and cause tension and anxiety in them. This lie snowballs and not only
spoils your next attempt but also hurts your near and dear once when
they come to know about it. I have never done this and this had kept
me inso many surprises that AeSI threw at me during my days of AMAeSI.

5. Don't be an island.
Since AeSI has no proper institution, meeting and having lots of
seniors and friends and network is rare. So form relationship. Use
internet, this website, ouraesi, aesi and aesiaa groups to be
connected to the aesi community!! In fact this website and ouraesi
sprang to make sure aesi students and graduates do not remain in an
island. So get involved and connect.

Go for high quality books in AeSI

In the AeSI yahoo group, Senthil kumar, rightly pointed out that
people shouldn't concentrate on books like Sharma and Sharma etc.
Instead they should read the books like sutton, anderson etc.

His arguments and observations are right on. Most of the Indian author
books are just diluted, exam-ready materials with very less emphasis
on concepts but more on exam recipes.

So go for the standard books. If you want a source for the book then
look into the syllabus book. It does a good job listing all high
quality books.

Just like tutors, select your base book with care. Go for the book
that has high potential instead of plucking the ready made dishes
served by most of the regional authored books.

3 ways to beat AeSI's uncertainty!!

As you begin your journey with AeSI for yet another semester, here are
3 things to keep in mind that will help you beat AeSI's uncertainty!!

Do not believe in the previous years question papers, instead use a
syllabus book. Just studying with an eye on the previous years
questions is sure shot way of drowning. Instead use syllabus book to
guide you, what to study. Use the question papers to regularly check
your progress.

Go under the topics. Study with your mind.
Just mugging up all the topics, without understanding anything won't
help you. A all night haul before the exam may cruise you out of that
exam, but in the long run, you will need that knowledge if you want to
be an engineer. So study with your mind. Understand and study.

Be prepared. AeSI's is like a tenis match where they want to exhaust
you. They want you to loose, they want to out play you. Just knowing
this and keeping this in mind while studying and preparing for it can
help you in tackling the odd ball serves, that AeSI dishes out!!

So don't let AeSI to exhaust you, throw you off balnce and score
against you. Beat the odds by preparations!!

Some do's and don't for the upcoming exams........

Back in 2002, this time around i was anxious about the upcoming AMAeSI exams and i posted "Some do's and don't for the upcoming exams........" in ouraesi club. I liked the stuff that i wrote back then and i think its relevant even today. So i reposting the email here so people can benefit from it.



Its been a long time since i posted anything here. well , you know exams are knocking so you can guess what i was doing. Then why i am here today u may wonder.

Well last night while i was waiting for my foodwalla to come, i stated thinking of the mistakes that myself and my friends i know did in their exams. And u know what, i got quite a few simple mistakes that have compelled them to study those subjects again! So i thought about posting the do and don't that i have encountered about the exams !! Maybe this will help some of you.

The first thing that comes to mind is the dilemma of my roommate in last exam. He knew all the questions in last years maths exam but he could only attempt 60 marks paper !! Guess why? Time was up. NO the space to write was up !! Yes he consumed all the pages. And to tell u the truth, even I had stopped at the boundary !! So folks when in exams have paper economy in mind !! Its feels really awful to not being able to complete the paper because there's no more page available !! Ask my roommate, he will certify.

Another incident of the last exam was of Hamza, You know he got the highest marks in flights that i know of and he should have completed his section-A last year if he was a bit careful in his last semester's maths exam? Well what he did in his maths exam was that he did different parts of a question at different places. He never read the warning or instruction of doing the same question at the same space and paid the price !! So this year have hamza in mind and do the questions sequentially and attempt all the parts of the question together.

Now comes the major mistake that i did for my last flights exam. I read all my notes, i read all the chapters of the prescribed books and all the theory and solved all the numericals. But guess what i failed Why ? The reason was that i thought i had read everything there to be read and solved all the numericals to be solved but never glanced at the syllabus book and missed 3-4 topics and unfortunately that exam had most questions from those topics. So guys Keep that damn syllabus book before you while you study and see to it that u have studied and covered all the topics.

Another useful advice that i heard once from one of my teacher was to always start with a question u are most comfortable and confidant ! Sounds logically, so why don't you apply it in this exams.

Some tips for getting the best of your exams and study times.

Be confident. confidence comes with preparation. so prepare well, get your syllabus book in hand and get going. i missed some topics in my exam days and had to re`-give the exams just because i missed parts of the syllabus.. learn from it.


The best advice my mom gave me was to study regularly and not keep thing till the end and i have applied it in my days of aesi. But if that is not the case with you and you see a heap of syllabus staring at you,then begin with small steps. Break the whole syllabus up in topics that you already know, the one that you have studied, the one that you consider easy, the one that is small, the one that is big, the one that come in exams most of the time. Then begin doing the easiest one. This is the technique of picking the low hanging fruits. See your syllabus as a tree,before you begin to climb get the low hanging one. Then prepare for the other one. Make a list of topics in a paper, keep it always in front of your study desk, strike off the topics as you do.

Everyday schedule a time for revision. one hour everyday. As exam approaches this time should increase.

your study time should always be divided into 2, New study hours and Revision time. Just at the beginning of the semester new study hours will dominate your total study time but then also always have at least 1 hour revision time. This is must as this enforces you to recollect what you have already learnt.In the revision hour you recall what your are learning in your new studying time. As your semester progresses, new study time decreases as more and more syllabus i covered, and this time begin increasing your revision time. And just before the exam time the time of revision should be the max.

Best memorization and retention occurs when you discus the topics. In your spare time discuss the topics of you have studied with friends and if no friends in interested, take a virtual class in your imagination. Use your imagination. Image you are taking a class, you are the teacher and teach that topic. See yourself drawing and explain the topic in detail in blackboard, See yourself answering the doubt of your students. I bet you will remember the topic for life.

Groups study are famous, Well they are good but do them only for new study time. New study time is when you are learning or reading a new topics. But revision should be alone. Revision time is the time when you recapture what you have learnt in your new study time, so keep the distraction to minimum and do it alone.

How to accelerate your GATE preparation?

Gate 2010 exams are nearing and by now you want to accelerate your
gate 2010 preparation. You want to push through the syllabus and get
more out of your study time.

Then here's a simple but effective technique to accelerate the pace of
your learning.

For this to work. You are required to have read the topics at least
once. You need to know what is where and what is what of the gate
syllabus.

The technique is to "take open book test" once you have covered some
topics or part of the syllabus!!

Simple but works everytime.

Gather 4 textbooks or question papers of your chosen subjects and
randomly take a open book test.

Atempt the questions without seeing the book. If stuck, try hard to
remember the answer and if no success then only see the book. Ater
seeing write down the answer without peeping at the answer again!!

Do it enough time and you will see how much you can cover in shot span
of time. Do it with all the topics, do it several times and you will
see how testing yourself, this way, increases your learning capacity.

Why it works I don't know! But it works. I have used this countless
times in my studies in AeSI!

And while selecting questions randomly, don't read the question you
are selecting. Just think of some random numbers and answer questions
against those numbers.

Hope you will at least give this simple exercise a go. Go test for
yourself.

Suggestions for AeSI improvement - highlights of aesi's enews

Ok ok I know that PDF didn't get published. As i post most of my entries via email. That PDF didn't go through the blogger platform and you weren't able to see the document. So here's the link for the 2 specific articles that I wanted to point your attention.

The articles are from Air Cmde Raghubir Singh (Retd) FAeSI- 732 and Dr G Madhavan Nair President Aeronautical Society of India.

 

Both of them deal with the improvement of aesi for the betterment of the students!

 

The articles assumed significance because of the fact that while in the AGM in cochin Air Cmde Raghubir Singh  gave a presentation which has really awaken other members on the plight of the students and everyone there did talked about improving it for the students. And there were questions raised towards Mr. Bhaita to answer. If you were there you could have seen how uncomfortable Mr bhaita became while answering.

 

So this articles getting published in enews is one step showing that people are listening and they haven't forgotten about us. So friends, this AGM lets us prepare our case strong and give a presentation telling the story from our (the student) side.

 

I know many of you might be thinking that this is bullshit and this will never work out, but let me tell you, if it doesn't work out its because of  you people who betray us. It’s because of you, who can't stand by your fellow aesians! So if you can't contribute positively and can't stand with us, I say you have no right to have a negative opinion about it!

 

Anyway here's the highlight of articles

 

• The question papers should be set from the syllabus-taking into account the depth possible based on the coverage.

 

• The syllabus while remaining on the elite IIT pattern should also take into account all India university syllabi –without diluting the our standards..

 

• Practical training, experiments & testing should form part of AMAeSI syllabus. Perhaps 50% marks can be catered for these.

 

• Project work, seminars & internal assessment under the accredited guides can be included

 

• Further rationalization of question paper setting so that good student can pass the examinations. Still out of syllabus questions continue to be set in our examinations.

 

• The question papers should be such that it tests the students for knowledge as per the syllabus & not the lack of it by post- graduate level questions

 

• It should be borne in mind that the students opting for AMAeSI, are either in service or students mostly in the 50-65% PCM marks bracket at 10+2 level. Without lowering our standards, the question papers must be such that these can be answered & does not result in dismal pass percentage

 

• The question paper setting, answer book checking & moderation should be in rotation at the institutions or by the Fellows of the AeSI.

 

• Model answers by the paper setters & marking system should available.

 

• It would be quite advantageous if subjects having greater coverage & depth are spread over a longer periods for better comprehension. For example subjects like Applied Maths-I, Introduction to Aeronautics can be telescoped over at least one year period.

 

NASTRAN what ??????????????????????

Well here’s an incident that happened to me when I was in NAL and working there on a project related to critical speed of mixed flow compressor shaft. As I was busy analyzing the shaft in NASTRAN, a project trainee working there saw me doing NASTRAN and approached me if I have the software. I said yes and as he brought his CD, I burned it to it. But it was after this that I got shocked when he questioned, hey what does NASTRAN does? Imagine, just collecting software with no aim. I was amazed at the guy. Is it me or something wrong with the person. Being BE mechanical, I can understand he might not know what NASTRAN is but I am was stuck by the aimless stocking tendency that the guy displayed by promptly bringing a cd and preserving the software. Probably he might have a library of all the softwares available in the market but what’s the use, why this senseless draw to getting software for the sake of it….  I guess that’s a mentality we grow up with when we gather notes for our exams and get hold any book we know is mentioned in the syllabus book!!!

 

I’m not judging you judge. As I mentioned earlier software are tools and means to a goal and not the goal itself. I am glad the guy was not  an aesi guy but then for the aesi guys its one thing I want to stress, be a master of one tool and have strong fundamentals of your domain and good communication skills to display what you know and there is nothing that can stop you to be a succeed in your profession.

 

 

 

Different ways to study for exams and which you can choose?

There are lot of ways to study for exams. Different people have
different inclination and routes.

So what's your way to study for exams?

Do you prefer learning by mouthing all the words you are reading or do
you study in complete silence?

Do you enjoy studying indoors or outdoors?

Do you love working with a textbook or a rough copy?

Do you like Reading from notes or from the book?

Do you read the difficult subjects before the simple onces?

Do you keep syllabus book with you or you do not?

Do you simply follow class lectures or have your own reference
materials?

Do you use Internet in your studies or you do not think it's not much
of use?

Do you study with examination paper or without?

Do you devote complete attention to one subject or you mix and match?

Do you study early in the morning or late at night?

Do you study with pen or paper or just read everything?

The point of the post is there are as many ways to study for an exam
as there are students. So it doesn't matter how, where, and when you
study.

What really matter is that you are consistent in your approach
whatever it is.

If you like studying early in the day, so be it. Be consistent with it.

If you love Reading on the rooftop all alone, so be it as long as you
are consistent.

Consistency is the magic!! The ingredient for success in any practise.
So aim for that and every thing else will fall in place.

Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?

He is a short guy, really short one, someone call him baccha. and whenever I meet him he always asks me "Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?" he has asked me a lot of times, the first time I said study as usual. But now his perpetual question has not been answered so I thought to pen all I know about this topic.


So how did I studied propulsion 1, joining class is a very good point to start. This not only helps in better preparation but gives you consistency and you are always in touch with the subject.

Propulsion I is divided into two sharp edges and that is numerical and theory and thank god the theory is simple and not like propulsion 3 where you have to think and give answer. Here the answers and theory is straight forward. Just give out what is being asked.

So as I said numerical are must in p1 and for that if you are studying in GIE and have access to Mathur and sharma is must. Most of the questions are based on this book and this books covers all the topics And if you are in Mr. Natarajan sir's class you will have ample opportunity in solving this numerical and that too with all of the class. Its nice doing that. One more perk of p1 class in my time was the whole night shift class!!! It was great!!!


Tips on p1:

1. Read all the topics. Bring out the syllabus book and do all the topics that had to be done. Don't leave a thing. One thing you don't get in propulsion 1 paper is lot of options. You have to do 5 out of the 6 questions and leaving a chapter or topic or two can be very risky and as a friend of mine learnt during the last semester when he did left a single chapter and it ruined his above 60 marks!!!

2. Read thoroughly. This will not only equip you to handle all the short type questions but will you better understanding of all the topics as you study them. Everything you will read from the first chapter on basics to the last chapter on lubrication has a link and reading thoroughly will help you understand the salient facts that may go unnoticed if you treat every chapter as an individual unit.

3. This is one of the most important thing that you should do while studying propulsion 1. and this also applies to all the other subjects. Use your imagination to see what you are learning. That is when reading about supercharger and the variables involved see how the variable affect, see how a bigger cylinder will cause more detonation and why air capacity is such and important variable. See it and I know you will have a better and lasting understanding of the subject and will have memorize less things !!

4. As you go through propulsion 1 , you will see there are so many variable as each one affect different parts and things differently and this could become hard to remember but if you imagine and understand the reasons behind the logic once. You can sale through.

5. Fortunately, the topics in propulsion 1 are inter woven and as you progress through your course on propulsion 1you will find it easy to go in chronological order. This will help in better memorization and understanding. For example studying the cc of IC engine is one such topic where a natural progression from detonation to design of SI engine head and then to the design and types of CI head, will be more efficiency than any other way. And this natural progression also has the advantage of quick revision.

6. My biggest mistake was not starting early, So at last I had to prepare some topics quickly and which brought my marks down, but you learn from my mistake. Start early. By this I don't mean not making notes, making notes is no study, memorizing and keeping the things in mind is what I referring to. Prop1 has so many topics and so for a firm grip on all the topics start early, and you won't have to ease through the last topics!!

7. Numerical. Well There are one way of solving the numerical ands that Mr. Natarajan sir teaches very well. Go to the basics and attack the problem. See what is given and what is asked. and answer it. Most of people I see is they refer to the example and try to understand what he is doing. Well all the examples in the books are done in different ways . And I have never followed what they did, I just take the question and solve it the way I know and what eventually matters is the answer and this is what studying in Mr. Natarajan sir's class will teach you!! You will get into this habit of solving with the basics and that I guess is the biggest lesson that one might acquire at a class.'


8. Propulsion 1 diagrams and they are simple and one should draw them neat without much shading and one point to remember is always draw the picture before you explain the thing. This not only helps the paper checker but also helps you to be methodical and you can explain better.


Well as for the baccha, I know he has cleared the propulsion one paper with good marks and all due to his hard work and long hours I heard he put in. Well I don’t know for certain if he is reading or read this but I would certainly like to see a comment or two from him on “Bahaiya How should I study propulsion 1?”

Lesson learnt from P-2 exam

First lesson to be learnt from this exam was don’t leave the immediate previous semester question paper. Do it and make sure you have all the numerical and questions done!! This is what happened to my roommate and me. We studied everything, did every numerical twice, scoured the notes by heart but ignored the numerical of last semester. So there we were. sitting in the examination hall cursing myself and the question setter for not making an effort and myself for being foolish enough to leave these questions thinking they won't be repeated so soon.


Well, if these two questions were a blow then the rest was scary as I was left there to answer all the theory questions for which the theory was inadequate. In p2 mainly the theory comes from the combustion chamber part and here I did one more mistake in my preparation. I did make notes but they were not enough, I mean this subject requires notes and to be studied from variety of books, they questions are similar but not a single book you will find in Gie that has the complete answer in it, so you got to scour loads of book to get a good answerable answer. Otherwise it just vague, and on the figures that you have to depend on. So make it a point to have good notes on the theory part of P2.

Does having good notes will suffice, no? Having notes gives you an edge now studying and memorizing them does the real work and this takes me down to my last minute exam blunder. From the start of the course people fed us p2 is easy. Just do the numerical do the cc and you are clear. And I foolishly believed it and so did some other folks! But this over simplification made me neglect the subject. Yeah it actually did. I did give it less time, I concentrated on the numerical, left out the theory for last week before the exams and this is where I did get my most anxious moment.

I delegated the theory till the last week before the exams and then when I finally sat with the book and the notes, I started getting anxiety pangs. And believe me they are much worse that snake bites!! “Ok lets do cc”. “Hey what are the different types of nozzles” and then ok that is the derivation for the Bryton cycle. This and much more topic tumbled down to me all at once, drawing me, drowning me. I somehow did the stuff but was not satisfied; I could have done much better if I had paid the proper study schedule for p2. So folks learn from my mistake. Never delegate the work of p2 and never neglect and let it sit there till the last moment.

One of my reason for keeping the thing off to last minutes was the confidence that I had 25% of the syllabus like the cycles already covered in section a and I can do that in an hour and that proved to a naught. It not that I couldn't do the numerical or derivations, but its that it look more time I expected and silly mistakes snarled in every fifth line making things frustrating, so do all the stuff before exams when you have lots of time. keep the exams and a week before the exam for pure old studies. no new things, just revision of what you have already learnt.


And when I am on to advising then there is one more that I guess every amaesi'an will agree. When preparing for amaesi, be prepared to surprised at the question paper, its always as inventive as Edison (perhaps!), as unpredictable as the stock market. And there are no rules. don't say this topic will come , that won't come? It a wild stock market out there. any question is possible so just go ahead and study what you can. Don't believe me just flip the June 2004 and Dec 2003 questions your doubts will melt away. As one batch mate of mine who gave flight for the 4th time put it candidly, "every time I study for flights I learn a new thing!" So folk you will always find new things; the subjects are vast and so is the mindset of the question paper setter, so just make sure you learn every time you read and don't guess. just learn what you find. who knows!!


And last but definitely not the least thing that I learnt from the exam was not to fret over what I have not learnt. Just make sure that you know everything that you have studied and concentrate on it during the exams. Fretting over what you have not done cost a friend of mine a semester. You know, our syllabus is big for 6 months, but we brave souls do take the plunge. But don't expect to cover all of it. If you can its well and good but crying over what's not covered it not great as I learn from mistake of one friend in this exams. I am in no way suggesting selective studies. No that's even worse. You loose more by it. All I am saying is if time gets crunch and before the exams, its always wise to have a in-depth knowledge of what you already know than shoving the new material under stress!!! So prepare from the beginning of the semester........

Read indtroduction to flights by John d Anderson. That's the short
and simple answer!

Will it be enough? By all means, no!!!!! But that book is a good
starting point and can help you in recall, comprehension and
application type of questions of gate.

Apart from this book recomendation, I would say the best way to study
for gate aerospace is study individual topics from the syllabus from
different standard books and pose short quiz questions on all the
things that you read. Use back questions? Section and topics to pose
mini questions. Answer them and onces you are confident in the topic
move ahead.

The main point I want to make is don't do straight question answer
study, read the topics that are in the syllabus, understand them, pose
questions from those understanding and then move to quiz questions.

Solving 10 thousand questions won't help unless you understand the
basics and going from basics is much more easier and time saving and
effecient way to study for any exam.

3 Websites that Every AeSI Students Should Visit

What was the most fascinating thing about mahabharat? I don’t know about you but for me, it was the different dhanushban that they kept in there tarkesh!!! I was fascinated by the way they used so much arrows and all of them having different powers…some brought rain, other rained fire and so on…..

Giving AeSI exams is another mahabharat, a fight between you and AeSI With its unexpected out of syllabus question, different pattern and unexpected surprises, the AeSI guys has its share of different arrows but what about AeSI students. Depending on one or two text book is not enough. Even solving tons of previous question papers is not alone, you will need more. And here I present 3 websites that every AeSI should add to his tarkesh!!!


The first one undoubtedly is the wikipedia. It’s the best! I have seen that many of the questions that students ask in OURAESI can directly be answered if they search it in wikipedia. It’s truly great. I use it all the time. Now in my office whenever I am bore I just get my browser and hit this website to get to a topic that I take fancy of that time. My recent visits were related to torque, continuity equations etc…

Another site that I would suggest is the MIT opencourseware aerospace material. This one is another resource where you can learn more about the topics that you are studying. It’s another great resource to see a different perspective of the topic that you are studying.

And last of all I would recommend the newly launched and very useful IIT lectures that I posted some days back. The most beautiful thing about the whole IIT lectures is they are video format. As they say a picture is worth thousand words then this lectures are a whole book. See actual IIT professors teach you the topics. The best part about IIT lectures is that many of these lectures closely resemble the syllabus of AeSI and so they are extra benefit. So if you can see this hour long lectures you about the topics you are studying, they will be most beneficial.
