1. If modules like DO178B, V&V, LDRA etc are so important to work in Avionics stream then why the hell society still have 8051, Basic Language and all in it's MODIFIED syllabus. 8051 is no longer basic now. Why you people of AeSI Alumni Association don't do anything in this subject ?

2. I've read Himalya Bhaiya's post about a cost effective recruitment process at LinkedIn.. Why you people don't do anything to make it possible ?

3. I went to "Cranes & Software House" in Bangalore.. They told me that it's a 6-8 months course. Does it suit the personality of Aeronautical Engineer to sit jobless for another 6-8 months after degree ? Don't say that do it in last semester. as you must be aware that doing software and giving paper of aesi is a big game. society's paper are not like state board exam.

First of all. AeSIAA members are graduates of AeSI who have teamed up to form a formal association for the betterment of students and graduates of AeSI. We provide a platform. Since each voluntary member of AeSIAA is graduate, we dont remember or seek problem to solve. But if there's a request or issue, we help you to place it before AeSI. So if you have a query, formally write an email to AeSIAA and it will be taken forward. 

2. Recruitment. Each and everyone if us is trying to do a bit of wherever he or she can. But before we can confidently put AeSI graduates forward we have to make sure that the graduates are prepared. So in this vein, AeSIAA is taking steps to build confidence and teach presenting skills though workshops. and seminars This is the most basic need which will lead to better results than pushing an unprepared AeSI graduate to hr.

3. Don't tell me how big a game AeSI study is. But if you need job and that too just getting out of AeSI, start building skills. The knowledge you get in AeSI is just the mass but the skills you build are the acceleration that you have to have to generate any force or thrust. Remember F = m.a ! Unless you have both, job immediately after graduation will be tough. So start cultivating skills along side studying for AeSI.

Don't go to an interview if you have.... Part 2

Why the rant about 'Don't go to interview if you....'?

Well yesterday a friend of mine was in the process of taking an interview. An AeSI guy, who is doing apprenticeship in NAL came for the interview.

That post highlights all the mistakes he did during the interview. We were so angry over the way he handled himself, so i came up with that post.

If you are coming for an aerospace interview then expect questions on gas turbines and you aren't allowed to say that I haven't studied that. It's your limitation not mine. So spare us that excuse!

A fresher's resume should be decent, should have the right amount of the projects. Too many projects in the resume definitely raise a warning bell. Be sensible and take great care while putting them in your resume.

And above all, you need to defend your resume, you submitted it, so as an interviewer I fully expect you to at least know what you have written in the resume.

And last of all. Professionalism !!

Please be a professional. It's not about you. The company is not a charity institution to help you get stated in your career, it's business and you need to provide and show the potential to be a use to it. Otherwise you are as good as the chair you are sitting on while in the interview.

This reminds me of the interview advice Gururaj gave years back to all AeSI graduates!

Always remember, friends can lead you towards an interview, but getting inside after that is entirely on you.

Your resume is a tool. Use it with a thought!

Resume is a tool, not like an hammer or a nail but a chemical catalyst. It won't give you a job. It won't convert your status from unemployed to employed.

But it's a catalyst that will accelerate or quicken your getting a call from the company.

The keywords, the length and the substance are nothing but represents the thought that you put in your resume. The right and thoughtful combination of which acts as a trigger in recruiter's mind and you will find yourself sitting in front him.

Remember this as you update your resume. Your resume is your marketing.

So don't leave anything on chance or laziness, put the weight of your thoughts in your resume and no one can stop your career to take off.

How lengthy should your resume be?

Before i start, apologies for the delay folks, I am dealing with travel and a bad stomach ache, so posting rate has slowed down to zero.

But I am hoping to recover soon and get back on track.

By the way, day before yesterday I was updating a resume for a friend with him. As we were updating, he questioned how much details should we put in a resume.

How much should it reveal?

As you know I maintain that for resume, the first page should give a snapshot of your career and profile. The rest are just addons

A resume of 2 to 3 page is maximum, you should keep it under this limit. The tight it is the better. It's your marketing document that brings you interviews.

So don't make the runway long for the resume to travel or else the hr will drop the resume before the take off.

I will discuss more on resume length and types of resume latter this week. So stay tuned.

Be Brave

Be brave....

This is the piece of advice i would give to all new aesi graduates.. be brave..


Having you resume on naukri.com is good, and useful. Telling your friends and sending resumes to them is great, but the best thing is to upload your resume to the companies you want to work for.


Every firm of reputes has an on-line system of accepting resumes, if you are not utilizing it, you are loosing a valuable resource. Try it. That's the first thing the HR people look for a requirement.


So be brave and utilize these opportunities....

In this blog I have always advocated making resume as your preparation guide for any job interview. Though I have already mentioned it why I think so but today I thought why not summarize the whole points here. so here we go my Top four reasons why resume is the best preparation guide.

1. The resume is your first impression to the employer. The first thing that connects you to the employer, to the organization. You will be called for an interview based on the contents of the resume. 
   
2. Your first question will sprout from this very soil. What you write here will decide the question that the interviewer will ask and begin interviewing you. Its this document that will chart the path of the your interview and the alleys and nooks you will visit during your interview.

Walk-in : Be the first

Seth Godin recently made interesting point in his blog..

The whole premise of the post is that for job seekers most of the time, being first is an advantage..

I think the same. I have seen that in job interviews if you are the first guy you set the agenda. You make an impression that is carried forward to the rest of the candidates.

Here are my two practical tips that I have learnt about any walk in.

1. Be the first... when the walk in is on Saturday and Sunday, I saw many people go there on Sunday thinking Saturday will be crowded  or other similar reasons. But going on the very first day at the very first hour has advantages.

See if you have the required experience and you match to the requirement, go on the first day, since you are usually the first so the HR people will screen the resumes leniently. Filtering process is fluid and small experience and skills gaps are tolerated but as time progresses and they begin getting lot of resumes or candidates, they become more strict, more choosy and more focused on the resume screening and only let the right candidates in. So be the first.

2. Second tip is make your resume easy to read or scan. Have all the relevant words, skills up front. Incidentally first page should have all the relevant related points regarding the requirement. Write it clearly and preferably in bullet format.

If someone has recommended you, write his/her name on the top of the resume. I have seen this technique work. Once yours truly and my friend while doing training after AeSI degree, went for an infotech walk in. After scanning my resume I was immediately asked to return and told “we will call you, do submit your resume”. While my friend having the similar experience and profile but having only the name of an employee on the resume got the chance to be interviewed. So if you have reference from someone inside the company, mention it its always gets a preference.

So this is what I have learnt from my walk0in that has come my way during my training period. Do tell me yours and what and how you tackled them.

I am doing training in NAL but still confused!

A week back someone who is working in NAL as a trainee sent me this query!

I got my degree certificates and presently am in C-CADD working on aerodynamics calculations,am here in NAL since April 15, please guide me what should I do now as further am not getting clear way what to do now? Hope u will guide me as per your experience..........

Now what can I advice him?  I don’t have all the answers. If you are reading this please share your opinion in comments.

See just working on aerodynamic calculation is not enough. when you are in training know you goal. Ultimately its all for the job. So have a clear goal while entering into the training phase. Know what kind of work you want to do? or at least have an idea of the work you will like. Pick up software tools, software skills that might be needed and most of all have your resume uploaded in two of the popular job portals.

So my practical advice to him will be these 3 points.

• He still has time so take stock and decide what you want from training? why you are doing it. Does the training helps in the work he intends to do? Answer this honestly.
  
• Secondly make a resume. Post it on at least two job portals. Register and fill in all the details make them visible. And then wait for the job listing to come to you. See what jobs interests you. if something is good. follow through. This exercise will help you see what skills are needed and what your current resume calls for. So take stock and build those skills and aim for that job.
• Learn some software. They are necessary. I know I always say that software's are just tools, but still  software is one of the reason AeSI folks go for training. Yes even if you choose no design or analysis job you need to learn ms office especially excel and word. So learn them.

Don't make any excuse... its your career you have to ride it to the destination!!!!   Well this are 3 things I will tell an AeSI guy doing training. What is your opinion?

Confidence + degree + skills = job

In my earlier post I have mentioned the above formula and said after AeSI, this is the recipe for landing a job. I ventured that if one can develop this 3 while studying for AeSI then you need no training and he or she is ready for the job,

In this post I would like to talk more about it and go in depth of what I meant by each of the term.


Confidence!

What is confidence? Confidence is your belief in yourself. It’s the belief that you are able to take on the work assigned to you. It’s the belief that you are able to apply your knowledge to get results. So how can an AeSI student build his confidence? First it’s passing his or her degree, that's one major confidence booster. IF you have passed with honest effort, you are already on your way of being confidence. It comes with preparation.

For me passing 4 subjects at one go was a major boost to my confidence. In section B, first semester I took up propulsion 1, 2, 3 and aerodynamics 1 as my subjects and studied for them, and did a marathon study along with Natrajan sir!!! And after my last semester, without waiting for the results to be announced I came to Bangalore and joined NAL as an unpaid training. This was best decision that I took in regards to AeSI and it really paved and concreted my confidence. It showed me the knowledge that AeSI has imparted us.

Confidence comes by preparation. By honestly studying for the exams, and getting all fundamentals and basics in your fingertips. Confidence comes with seeing the results of your efforts.

Wikipedia has a good post regarding how to build confidence. Read it and most importantly apply the points!!


The one I liked most is
"Try to make yourself talk positively at all times. When you hear yourself saying you can't do something, stop and say you can. Unless you try, you will never know whether you are able to or not."

Degree
The next part of the equation is degree. Complete the AMAeSI degree. It will enable you to say that you are one of the best aeronautical engineer in india!! Yes Read it here, here and here. It is this degree that enables these persons to say that they are best in the world. And then we all have the biggest inspiration Mr. Bishnujee Singh. He began from AeSI degree. As Shah Rukh Khan says in the recent HP advertisements, think big. Once you have made your mind that you are pursuing the AMAeSI degree. Forget the fact how tactless, careless, unsympathetic AeSI folks are . Be proud of your degree. It’s the only thing that should matter. As I said in my earlier post “tips for getting employed in the aerospace boom”, taking pride in your degree is the most important thing IF you don't respect it NOBODY else will.

Skills.
A company requires person who are not only knowledgeable but the one who can apply that knowledge to some practical work out of which the company benefits. And this is where your skills came. So as mentioned in post titled “things to do in your last semester”, make it a point to know what are the skills that the companies are looking for and began building them in your AeSI days. This is the most important area that you have to work for. In my case I have begun earlier, I knew I had a knack of programming so I began with that skill and set a daily 30 minutes goal for that. I developed it so that it became my prime reason for getting the project trainee job in NAL. I didn't have access to CATIA or other design and analysis software like NASTRAN, ANSYS then, but if I had I am sure I would have chalked out a similar plan for that... So most important thing AeSI students can do first know what skills are needed and when they are in last or 2nd last semester of AeSI, they should begin developing them. Set small challenge and daily goals to accomplish them.


Well this completes the recipe.. If you have all the 3 you are job ready and can hit send to send your resumes along with cover letters and I am sure there's nothing that can stop you from getting that job.

Opportunity to Apply your Knowledge is more Important that Learning a new Software

In continuation with my 7 tips on getting maximum out of training for AeSI guys, this is the second tip.

Opportunity to apply your knowledge is more important that learning a software. In my days of training, I was fortunate that after seeing my credentials, I was assigned the work on gas turbine performance. This was much better than working on CATIA or any other analysis software’s, where there was very less chance of applying my knowledge. Though from this task I graduated to learn solid works for my task but I was fortunate that I got the real engineer task of design by formulae’s before getting my hands dirty with the software.



I know many of you will tell me that learning software is more likely to get you a job than applying your skills. Well yes you are true but that’s only for short term. IF you need to excel in long term than you need to build your core skills not nail polish some tricks of in-demand software. IF job is what you desire then go for it but if you have a career in mind then build your fundamental skills first. They are way important than the software skills.

How to do that?

Well its not that everyone gets his or her desired work profile as a trainee But its always true that its your attitude towards the assignment and how you accomplish that that will show where you stand and where you will go.

So whatever be the task you have been assigned, do it with your maximum effort. As stated in the previous post, if you have clear purpose of joining the training then think of ways to align or include your purpose into the work you are doing.

Create mini challenges for you if the task in not challenging enough. I know of a fiend who was given the task of getting the flight test data of SARAS aircraft, now all he has to do it was to input the flight data as it came and then plot the results. He did this all the time and now it was routine. During lunch he always used to say: “yaar, koi accha kaam hi nahi hai” here I would have suggested that guy that when he knows that the work is repetitive and it’s always the same, why not automate it. Excel is great tool. He can create a template so just inputting the data will be enough. Create a challenge that you will optimize the work and get the maximum benefit.

So challenge yourself, to do things that you are to do but with the things that will help your grow. Carry on with your assignments but mix those assignments with the dash of your purpose and how you benefit from the whole exercise.

Is this your last or second last semester in AeSI

Is this your last or second last semester of AeSI. If it is then first thing that you need to do after aesi exams is sit in front of the computer and begin making a resume. No matter how you make it, just make it. edit it and judge it, if satisfied post it on the job site?

This is one step each student of aesi should do. Why so early you might ask ?


This is not early, in fact i feel this is the best time for any aesi student.

Writing the resume will help you focus on yourself in terms of market. it will force you to see what are your skills are, it will show you your motivation for what you want to do after aesi. And most importantly resume writing at this stage will expose you to the gaps that you have before you get employed.

Writing and posting it on net do have other important advantages. Most of the job sites has this facility of sending you job recommendation based on your resume, so once your resume is online you will get jobs matching them. This is one place where you can see what you are best suited for.

The posting are many times targeted so this will also show the skills that are in demand for people of your profile

You might know some aerospace companies related to your field but this posts that you will get in your mail will also highlight other similar companies that you might have missed or don't know about.

Another advantage is. Now you might have one main skill but from the jobs notifications that you receive in your email, you will know about the additional skills that are needed apart from the main skills for the kind of job you will be working.

For example, when i listed compressor design in my resume, i also saw that most of the compressor design firms used cad and a basic knowledge of those tool was an added advantage, so i used that tip and learnt solidworks

Not all jobs post will be relevant but those that will be. You can get some good tips. So get going get your first resume ready. How do you like the tips? Do you have another one that you want to add?

I took a screen shot of the job requirement posting in ouraesi club. And surprising one term showed very frequently in all the current as well as past requirements. Have a look and learn to use it to your advantage in your next job search.


And what perhaps is more surprising is that very few people take it seriously while sending there resume to this requirement. Take a look at the screen shot.


Yes its hand calculation. If you have cleared society then its pretty much sure that you are already good at it. But what surprised me was how so many of aesi folks, including myself, missed the opportunity of showing this was our advantage in resume and fail to highlight this in our cover letters.

Since aesi's question are as unpredictable as the monsoons, so aesi prepares us to read thoroughly. and all this factors contribute that generally aesi folks are better prepared in hand calculations.

So next time you send your resume, mention this in your resume and highlight in your cover letter.

6 things you should begin doing in your last semester of AeSI.

Many of aesi students will be in the last semester of AeSI and here i thought of writing about 6 things they should begin doing in their last semester in AeSI. Earlier i have written about 8 things that you can do after the amaesi examination.

I have seen many folks just waiting for the last exam to finish when they begin doing this steps but i feel the right time for this step is the beginning of your last semester and this is when this 6 steps can impact on your entry into the industry once you graduate from aesi.



1. Make your resume and post it on job sites.

2. Begin looking at the requirements. See the skills being demanded. If you have then, good improve them, if you don't acquire them.

3. AeSI provides you the facility of time, so utilize the time to do freelance work. Teaching is great. Maybe join some local CAD center, or teach the skills you know in your institute. But do something to strengthen your skills.

4. Brush up your favorite subjects. One of the favorite question in your first interview will be based on this.

5. Read about your industry. Computer film magazines are spicy but begin reading about the industry you are about to enter. You might begin with indianaeronews blog to stay current on Indian aerospace news.

6. If you are good at designing, have worked in some CAD or analysis tools, then create an online or offline portfolio. This portfolio will give you an added advantage when you do the job hunting.

Though i have written the steps in keeping aesi folks in mind, but these steps are equally applicable to all the graduating students.
