Some tips for getting the best of your exams and study times.

Be confident. confidence comes with preparation. so prepare well, get your syllabus book in hand and get going. i missed some topics in my exam days and had to re`-give the exams just because i missed parts of the syllabus.. learn from it.


The best advice my mom gave me was to study regularly and not keep thing till the end and i have applied it in my days of aesi. But if that is not the case with you and you see a heap of syllabus staring at you,then begin with small steps. Break the whole syllabus up in topics that you already know, the one that you have studied, the one that you consider easy, the one that is small, the one that is big, the one that come in exams most of the time. Then begin doing the easiest one. This is the technique of picking the low hanging fruits. See your syllabus as a tree,before you begin to climb get the low hanging one. Then prepare for the other one. Make a list of topics in a paper, keep it always in front of your study desk, strike off the topics as you do.

Everyday schedule a time for revision. one hour everyday. As exam approaches this time should increase.

your study time should always be divided into 2, New study hours and Revision time. Just at the beginning of the semester new study hours will dominate your total study time but then also always have at least 1 hour revision time. This is must as this enforces you to recollect what you have already learnt.In the revision hour you recall what your are learning in your new studying time. As your semester progresses, new study time decreases as more and more syllabus i covered, and this time begin increasing your revision time. And just before the exam time the time of revision should be the max.

Best memorization and retention occurs when you discus the topics. In your spare time discuss the topics of you have studied with friends and if no friends in interested, take a virtual class in your imagination. Use your imagination. Image you are taking a class, you are the teacher and teach that topic. See yourself drawing and explain the topic in detail in blackboard, See yourself answering the doubt of your students. I bet you will remember the topic for life.

Groups study are famous, Well they are good but do them only for new study time. New study time is when you are learning or reading a new topics. But revision should be alone. Revision time is the time when you recapture what you have learnt in your new study time, so keep the distraction to minimum and do it alone.

There are lot of ways to study for exams. Different people have
different inclination and routes.

So what's your way to study for exams?

Do you prefer learning by mouthing all the words you are reading or do
you study in complete silence?

Do you enjoy studying indoors or outdoors?

Do you like Reading from notes or from the book?

Do you read the difficult subjects before the simple onces?

The point of the post is there are as many ways to study for an exam
as there are students. So it doesn't matter how, where, and when you
study.

What really matter is that you are consistent in your approach
whatever it is.

If you like studying early in the day, so be it. Be consistent with it.

If you love Reading on the rooftop all alone, so be it as long as you
are consistent.

Consistency is the magic!! The ingredient for success in any practise.
So aim for that and every thing else will fall in place.

Constraints and AeSI study tip

Great designs always have constraints. In many ways, design is defined by constraints and using them elegantly.

Designing a study schedule is the same. If your schedule is to study every available time between "I wake up and go back to sleep", then you aren't doing it right.

The right way of designing your study schedule is putting constraints. Constraints as to when to study and what to study.


Constraints makes life easy and more fun.

When you know you have constraint of not studying on Sundays. You will study more attentively on other days.

You will study more intently if you know next time you will get to study this subject is after 3 days.

Constraints and following them methodically can make things easy. Sounds counter intuitive. Try it.

Constraints is the difference between leading a stress free student life and leading a life in a pressure cooker.

How I used to setup a study routine for next semester

Setting up a routine was the first step that I took when I was in aesi?

Just before the announcement of aesi results, I used to sit and take
stock of my time and subjects and made a routine for the upcoming
semester.

I didn't follow the routine always but most of the time routine gave
me the ability to just begin. It automated many of the decisions I had
to make when sitting to study.

Since I had already assigned fixed hours to a particular subject, so I
didn't had a dilemma of what to study next? All I needed was a glance
at the routine, and I knew where my next hour is going to be utilized.

Here are some of the points that you might find useful while making
your own study routine.

1. Decide how much time you have per day. Keep it modest. Early
enthusiasm points that we can should alot the maximum hour available,
but the best strategy that I found is set a resonable minimum hours.
Set the number of hours that you are sure you will put into study no
matter what.

2. After the hours, decide on the subjects. Ponder on the lengh and
the structure of the subjects? Are they all theory or all numerical or
which section dominates

3. After deciding on the hours and the subjects, now is the time to
fit the subjects to the time available.

4. But before that, set the first half hour or an hour, whichever is
convenient to revise what you have learnt the day before. Yes revising
should be a part of your study routine. Begining early will enable you
to keep everything fresh. As the semester will progress the lengh of
revision hour will increase.

5. After the revision hour, set 30 mins a day ( any time you like) to
do exploration. This is the time when you just explore any topic that
you studied that day. It's not study but a time when you can dig
dipper and learn about a topic more deeply. You might want to use
wikipedia or google or a magazine or off course book for this kind of
exploration. This enables you a fresh prespective and keeps the
interest alive.

6. For the Rest of the remaining time, fill in the subjects, mix them
well. Theory with numerical and vice versa. The idea is to keep the
interest alive and not to be burden with studies.

7. Last and the most important point for making your own study routine
is think your week to have 6 days!! Yes 6 days!! Keep one full day
off. No studies on that day. That day is reserved for any hobby,
networking or anything that you are passionate about. This is the day
you test your passion, experiment and just live. An unplanned day
within 6 planned day will help you navigate your study ship to its
correct destination, help you ponder on your progress.

Hope this points will help you write a routine that maximises your
efforts in time for a fruitful next semester.

After this all that is required is execution. So come on execute.
Commit to yourself that you are going to follow this routine for the
next 30 days. And then do it. If you can continue for the 30 days, it
will become a habit.

So after making the routine, commit the next 30 days for following it.

Five ways of study to crack AeSI exams

I have already restated all this before but again it needs a reminder.
Aesi is tough. It needs more time, more effort and more concentrated
effort. So here are five simple yet powerful ways that one can
incorporate in his or her study habits to crack AeSI.

1. Study with the syllabus book. Read all the topics. Pick and
studying just what is taught in the class is not sufficient, one need
to study systematicly and cover all the topics listed in the syllabus
book. It did cost me twice in my aesi exams so don't ignore the

2. Go for the basic theory. Master it, digest it, marinate on it, chew
it. Once all this is done go for the questions, just reading onces and
solving tons of questions won't help. Understand and digest the basics

3. Pen and paper study. Don't just use your mind and fingers to read
and study. Get a rough copy and pen. Draw brainstrom and study. Don't
just write the definitions draw them, connect the new info with the
already present information. Connect different topics and strengthen

4. Revise everyday, every topic. Whatever new you study revise it the
next day, the next week and thereafter. This helps you to keep you
immersed in the subject. Helps you quicly connect the new to the old

5. Read thoroughly. Read the full chapters. Read the full text. This
is where the main core is. Justing reading once and concentrating on
solving questions, papers won't help you. Read throroughly. Read
thrice. This is the only way to get to imprint what you read on your
minds canvas forever. This is what will help you in the long run. Aim

How to Study in 30 days

In my mail I had quite a few querries from some students of AeSI who
say they have less time and how can they utilize the time so that they
pass the 3 or 4 subject they are appearing for this time.

I believe that regular consistent study is the best way. But I know
life throws circumstances when you are into situations where you begin
your studies just days ahead of exams. For those situations here is
the list of things i would do.

Take it as a challenge.
Take the task as a challenge . Think it as a goal that you have to
reach. Make aggressive changes in your daily routine to get to this
challenge. Shun self pity and make moves to get the maximum of your
time. Time and productively with which you will study is the key.

Concentrate on two subjects a mix will be better.
Doing 3 or 4 subjects is lot. Since time is limited. It's better to
Choose two subjects and give your maximum attention to them. It's
better to be passing two subjects than stuggling with time to study
all 4. Bake two subjects carefully rather than having all four
subjects half baked.

While choosing the subjects, choose subjects that are different. One
theory based one numerical based. This way you can divide your time
between this two and won't feel bored studying the subjects most of
the time.

Take the syllabus book.
As always, with the subjects choosen get the syllabus book and begin
your exam preparation. Cover the topics as listed in the syllabus book.

Read all the already read and previously read stuff. Complete the
basics of all the topics. Study with a plan. Study with pen and paper.
Draw and make connections on what you are studying.

Take the question paper solve the easy parts.

Don't plan to cover all but get to cover 80%

Plan a schedule and action on how to tackle all the different types of
question you get in that particular subject

Begin with simple stuff
Begin with the known. To retain what you learnt revise daily. Talk
about the topics you study. Connect new topics with the old topics
that you already know.

How to prepare for basic electronics papers of AeSI?

Well as I told in my previous post, I am not connected to aesi as a
student now so my advice on how to study this subject is very limited.

Allow yourself more time to stare at the clouds

It's the one technique or way of study that I always hit upon so many
times in this blog.

The main point of the quote is don't just study, soak in it. Drag the
studies out of the text books. Take it out and connect with it.

Study for small time, but use the rest of the time digesting,
connecting the stuff you read. Remember and see the content you
studied in different ways. Imagine consequences of it. Let your
imagination run wild on that information.

This is what a friend of mine in AeSI was master of. He was the only
guy who studied (that is sat with the books) the least, but always got
the highest marks and had answers ready. I didn't know his exact
technique back then, but now I know he moonlighted on those topics
that he studied.

We, myself included, forgot to recall the subjects as soon as we
closed the book, but for him they remained with him. From tea shops to
girls, he uncannily connected the new information with the world
around him.

So as you study for this semester, remember this mantra- study less,
imagine more. That's the secret of successful study.

Please give it a try. Do remember what one great scientist said,
imagination is more powerful than knowledge. So give it the wings and
reach the skys!'

5 study tips for studying for AeSI

AeSI is tough, AeSI is this, aesi is that... We all hear this often,
but whatever it is, if you want to clear it you have to study for it,
you have to clease those papers. So in this post i will list 5 general
suggestions that any aesi student can apply to improve his chances to
clear AeSI papers.

1. Keep simple.
Yes keep things simple. Make a simple plan. Set a minimum hour and
stick with it. Grand, complicated plans are not needed. Just a simple
barebone plan is lot better than no plan. So keep a simple routine for
study and a strong resolve to stick with it.

2. Attend classes.
Even if you are studing the subject second time, attend classes. Even
if you don't feel like, attend classes. Even when it needs some
effort, attend classes.

Attending classes, discussing and asking questions will open up lot
more mental neurons than just reading old notes.

3. Be systematic
Following a simple plan is better than no plan. A free wheeling wind
mill generates no power. So plan and make simple routine and stick
with it.

Systemetic study of the sections will help you harness the power of
incremental learning. So begin making a routine. Next step is to
execute it

4. Play
Here's a simple rule for making a routine that actually allows soaking
the maximum knowlede in minimum effort.

Decide on the number of hours you want to study per week. Double this
amount and keep this time free for other things of life. If it exceeds
try reducing the number of hours to study and do the process again.

The point is have play time double the amount of study time. This is
the time your mind will have a chance to soak up all the info. This
play time can be used to pursue other projects like learning a new
programming language, reading, model making etc.

5. Murder
Murder all distraction. Murder all fruitless activities. Murder the
belief that you need to study every available hour of the day. Fill
the first hours of the day with the most important activities.

'Keep in touch' Study technique

Keep in touch. It's as simple as that. If you keep in touch with what
you are studying and is being taught in the class, you don't have to
toll hard during exam time.

By this i am reffering to follow active revision policy. Revise
everytime. Revise at the start of the study session, revise at the
end of the study session and setup a revision day.

So make a revision centric timetable. Sandwich your study hours with
small slices of revisions. Do recall and summarize session for 3
minutes before every study hour.

This simple change in your study routine can help you leapfrog way
ahead of anyone.

Quick exam study tips

In a game when there are two kind of points to score, which one will
you choose? The one that gets you 3 points at one go or the onces that
fetch 1 point per shot. Definitely the one shot that gives maximum
points will be your choice if you want to win. So while studying for
exams also get this thing clear.

This time around I had few querries from students having less time and
tips to study for exams.

So this tip is mainly for them, if you have less time and lot to
revise and study then go for the topics that have the maximum marks,
turn your attentions to the topics that are always asked, study the
topics that have straight forward answers!!!

I don't advice selective study as it's not one should work on but when
circumstances appear then strike to get the highest score. It's like
IPL, no dot balls, keep the score coming!!!

Only way to study

Dig dip. Dig dense. That's the only way to study. Studying for only exams is not the way..... study to be a good engineer, study to understand, study to get the facts. This is how things will be easy when you get into the industry. So remember this when you studying your subjects.

Best way for me was when I took pen and paper. I remember those topics very clearly which I studied with pen and paper. And there was another topics that I remember very clearly and those were the one which I had discussion with my friends.

So study with pen and paper, jot down what you read, make diagrams, visual maps and freely discuss what you are learning with your friends, state what you have understood and how the topic you learnt applies to your and our life. This simple exercises will cement the topic in your mind, bond it in your knowledge, so give it a try!

I don't have very specific answer to this since I am far removed from study right now. So guys and gals out there, have your say and suggest your tips on studying this specific subjects.

From my side, I will add this.

Fluid mechanics is a subject that you will be using in your career long after you have passed AeSI, so I suggest that spend maximum time in understanding the concepts. Relate them to your life and make them spring out of the text book.

Source sink, fluid dynamics, viscosity, Reynolds's number are the core pillars of further studies. So while learning understand them well, use your imagination to connect them to your life.

Study with question answer style for maximum retention.
While reading the material, write down small quiz questions on the topic you are reading. They will be used to revise the concepts latter. My tuition teacher used this approach. While going through the topics he made us write down trivial questions like what is source? Give examples of sink? What is the most viscous materials you have seen? etc.

That time we felt, the questions were waste of time, but latter I realized how useful they were for revising the concepts.

For every study session. Spend ten minutes revising what you have already studied. If you have formed those small questions then use them to jog your memory. This ten minutes jogging session not only reinforces the previous studied material but help you begin the next session with a positive momentum.

This three concepts can be applied to mathematics and the other subjects. Just remember, that if you can setup a simple process for your study and follow it consistently, that is more than sufficient to help you tackle any subject that AeSI throws at you.

4 tips to help you cook your studies well

In the last post, I talked about how giving time to the food cooks it well. I discussed why this technique works and I encouraged you to apply it in your studies.

Here in this second post, I will give four tips that can help you to have stress free and enjoyable study experience.

So lets begin....

A. Set up a minimum no of hour of study. Keep it low. Keep a number such that you have no difficulty doing it everyday. The last point is the key. Miss or fail to comply with it, and you have wasted your time on this post.

B. After the study. Let the information sink. Don't just keep adding ingredints. After the minimum hour of study, let the book rest. But latter when you are doing some mundane job or walking towards the tea shop, recall the  information. See it from another angle. Use your imagination to visualize what you read about.

C. If possible discuss what you studied with your peers, amaze them with something that you found interesting. Turn the theory into some practical insight and share that insight.

Did you know first machine to turn chemical/thermal energy to mechanical energy was a gun! Recently a friend who is revising thermodynamics shared this with me.

D. Have lot of mixed activities in your life. Begin a small project. Explore something that is in news. Like MNIK, IPL or the hockey world cup etc. The point is to completely think of something else.

In student life you should have a varied mix of stuff to do. This increases your sharpness and you are exposed to varied sources of input which can stimulate your imagination further.

Apply this few tips in your study life, they are bound to increase your productivity in studies and make your life more interesting.

How to give a great start to a new semester? - 3 tips

New semester have began for many of the AeSI students. It's the time
when classes start and we all fall in the grove of going to classes
and tutions. Life falls into a routine and it's becomes easy to miss
out the right way to begin a new semester.

So here I will present you three ways (although all are related) to
begin the new semester that lays a strong foundation.

1. Cut out your study hours.
This is the start of the semester. Don't put too much time pressure on
yourself. It's the time when you have the leisure of time. So utilize
it on other things than taking notes more than needed, and studying
more than required!

Do the minimal study, read ahead what will be taught in the class and
the tution and be attentive in classes. Apart from that don't study.

2. Reflect.
Instead spend time reflecting on the things you are learning than
mugging up formulaes and data for the exams! Reflect on whatever is
taught in the class, imagine the concepts introduced, discuss or
connect what you learnt today with what you already know.

This is the time when you want to build the foundation of your study,
so shun making notes, mugging, and solving hundreds of numericals.
This will come latter in the semester, right now lay a strong
foundation with the concepts.

3. Use pen paper and drawing.
Use pen and paper. Draw, imagine and relate the stuff you are
learning. Take imaginary classes of the stuff you are learning. Teach
what you have understood, question what you haven't!

This is how the begining of you new study should commence.

Five tips for studying for exams

Worriers! Exams are nearing and everyone I hope is gearing up for them. Great, so I thought why not share a few things that I did during examination that eased mine anxiety.



Loud speaker: when it comes to reading, read out load this is much more effective than simply reading in mind. While reading in mind can distract you, but listening to your own voice reinforces what you read. I did this P3, wt and many other papers where theory was predominant



Walk: When you are writhing sitting is mandatory, but if you are reading and memorizing stuff, roam around in room or rooftop and you will find that you are recalling and retaining the stuff more easily. Moreover there’s is no chance you will fall asleep!!!

Dream : While going back to sleep, don't think about how exams will go or what the paper be like, instead apply the technique of reviewing what you have read the whole day, Try questioning the formulae and equations that you encountered that day. See then in your minds blackboard.



Mental rehearsal: Rehearse mentally. Mine favorite and it worked for me. They say that we learn more when we teach, so while lying in bed, imagine yourself in class and see in your minds board all things drawn that you have learnt on that particular day. Use vivid images, smell, and objects to reinforce the concepts. I studies propulsion so it was easy to imagine the compressor rotate and see the whole gas turbine engine work in mind. In your case use your imagination.



Talkback: some of the things that I remember most vividly of the study materials that I have studied are the ones that I have talked about with my friends and roommates, The topics that we discussed are still clear in mind. So use this technique to engrave a particular concept, topic in your mind. I am sure you will never forget a velocity triangle of a compressor once you have lively discussion on that.



Lots of breaks: Study without breaks is like no study at all. I remember an advert in one paper which claims that as our brain tiers; its capabilities diminish, so take frequent breaks. Well I don't know how true the claim was, but when I took breaks after a specified period of study, I was rejuvenated for sure. And put in longer hours. So take breaks often and when you again sit for a study session, set a target that you will get up after this particular task is done.



Teashop: While we were in Chennai, my roommates and we were famous for walking to a distant teashop for tea. Everyone used to wonder why we take such a long stroll for the tea? Some suspected a girl is involved, but none was true, we did it because it gave us the necessary exercise and after a long walk and talk about topics not related to study, we were refreshed. Tea was just an excuse. So take walking breaks. Go to that distance shop in group but be on time and come back and don’t get carried away in the masti.



Write: best way to practice a thing is to write it, my mom used to say that, and from the beginning I stuck with this and I always used to revise my stuff with a pencil and paper, I drew, explained and jotted important points as I revised. I was and am poor in spelling and this habit had improved a lot......

6 smart things you can do today to give a great start to your semester.

Here is a list of 6 tips for all AeSI students to give a great start to your new semester.

1. Set a fixed routine.
   Identify the time you will study and the time you will nor study. Fix it.  
   
2. Set minimum hour of study and keep it low.  Maybe just two hours of study at the beginning of the semester is what you want. Keep it light. The aim is to set the minimum hours and stick to it.
   
3. Plan to use the first waking hour productively.
   Once you fill the first hours with the most important work rest of the day you can use to whatever that comes to you. So think about what is the most important task of your life right now and schedule it to the first waking hour of your day.
   
4. Set reminders of the your goals.
   We fall short of goals not because we have low potential but because we forget our goals. We forget to do revision. We forget the intention for which we are working. So set reminders. 
   
5. Set one day for total fun activities.  No Study Day.
   Choose a day when you will not study. Will not do anything related to AeSI and career development. This is your recharge day. Use it to recharge. Be active in all other actions. Try including sport activities.
   
6. Research and set one base book for each subjects that you have for this semester. Setting one base book gives you consistent definitions and understanding. Hoping books is like going to ten tuitions for one subject. Gaining too little with so much hard work. so be smart, stick to one book for at least the first 3 months of the semester.

All the tips that are mentioned above can be implemented right now. so what are you waiting for. Go ahead and create a successful semester.

Remove the decision engine- How to study for AeSI

As discussed in my last post, if I knew before hand what I wanted to
study, I was preety sure to do that. But on days when this decison was
lacking I procrastinated. I delayed and by the time I came to senses
the day was almost over.

So the lesson to learn is make a routine or plan of study and stick to
it.

Eliminate the day to day decision engines. Create a plan and then
carry on based on it.

No getting up in the morning and thinking, what should i study? Which
chapter etc.

Eliminate this decision process and you will gain immensely and have a
productive studying.

Study not for AeSI exams

The beauty about AeSI is that once you complete it and you are in the
industry, you will know how you are far ahead of anyone in your office
in terms of aeronautical knowledge!!

From gas turbine essentials to principles of flights, you will be
second to none.

Be it India or anywhere else, what you truly learnt in aesi will
surely be a big part of your success in your career.

So don't just study for the exams, study and learn to be a better
engineer, study to get the understanding, study to apply the basic
concepts and study to win the war!!!!

Advantages of Studying in Library!!

I remember when I was in standard II, my mom used to sit near me with her knitting, as I pretended to study. Then finding me day-dreaming and smiling at my imaginary adventures that I took while holding the book in my hand, she remarked. "Beta one hours of concentrated study is more than 6 hours of toil". Ignorant I was at that time, I came out of my reverie and mumbled the words on the book and within minutes was back with my plays in the imaginary world, plotting planning things I will do next on the playground. But Now as I began to write this I remember those words of mom and that is what a library gives you. A concentrated hour of study. So here are the advantages I got, saw as I spend my time in library last semester.


1. Its a silence zone. So no disturbance and everyone in and around the place knows that and keeps there conversations to minimum and low. So The greatest advantage of library is the silence that you may not get in your room. Sometime the room mates are talking, sometimes the CD player is on, sometime just conversations about movies or the opposite sex ( ;-) who can resist topics like that!) But in a library its silence Though not pin-drop silence as Mr. Modok, my chemistry lab assistant always wanted in his lab! But silent enough to hear the buzz of the overhead fan!

2. Second advantage is the studying atmosphere that you get there. Either they are empty or if filled everybody else will be studying and so you are always in the atmosphere of studies and this increases your concentration and even if you start getting distracted , a look at the next guy deeply immersed in the book in front of him gets you on track. And since minimum conversation is allowed there's none to comment on your "arre pata hai aaj wo dehi thi sarak par!!!" So you end up killing that damsel in your thoughts and come back to the book at hand.


3. In your room we stay half naked. [and in case of my roommate he is 90% naked and thank god he is not 100% :)] And when we sit to study, we give our legs and body the full freedom to loiter around while we struggle with the jet propulsion’s numerical or trying to grasp how a lathe works!!! So we always don't sit on proper chair and table and even if we start our studies there but eventually the pillow creeps under our head. So studying in library with its chair and table doesn't allow this and we have a concentrated and good postured study there.


4. What happens when you get some doubts in your room, You first check your notes, then maybe your book, and if all else fails you give a shout to your roommate [ though some lazy fellows like me use the last option first!! ;-)] And even then, if the problem is not solved you end up leaving that whole subject let alone the topic and maybe and most probably find yourself chatting with that friend of yours on that topic until you get out of it and get to other worldly things!! But in library, you have the vast reserves of books and if you don't find it in Anderson, get Caruthers, if not in Caruthers you can browse through Hutton etc. so The range of books increases your chances of clearing your doubts and even if someone is present to ask you being in library talk only the needful and it reduces the unnecessary talk that may start if it were not a library, so you have more effective study.

5. And being is library has one good advantage. If you feel bored or tired of one subject you can easily switch to the next subject. This is not always possible in rooms as once you get up, you loiter and converse more than that you will do in a library. Even if you get out of the library for a break It won't take as long as the break you might take at home. And in my experience, the rest period in library is 50%shorter and more effective than the room's.

Due to the presence of so many wide variety of books in the library, you may even relax with a non-subject book in which you have interest in. For myself I have relaxed myself so many times by reading model-building books in my library in between Andersons and Suttons!!!


So folks, library is not a rack of orderly kept books but much more and as mom would have said a single hour in library is worth 3 hours in room!! And what more, I know, my mom will be certainly happier reading this.

Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?

He is a short guy, really short one, someone call him baccha. and whenever I meet him he always asks me "Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?" he has asked me a lot of times, the first time I said study as usual. But now his perpetual question has not been answered so I thought to pen all I know about this topic.


So how did I studied propulsion 1, joining class is a very good point to start. This not only helps in better preparation but gives you consistency and you are always in touch with the subject.

Propulsion I is divided into two sharp edges and that is numerical and theory and thank god the theory is simple and not like propulsion 3 where you have to think and give answer. Here the answers and theory is straight forward. Just give out what is being asked.

So as I said numerical are must in p1 and for that if you are studying in GIE and have access to Mathur and sharma is must. Most of the questions are based on this book and this books covers all the topics And if you are in Mr. Natarajan sir's class you will have ample opportunity in solving this numerical and that too with all of the class. Its nice doing that. One more perk of p1 class in my time was the whole night shift class!!! It was great!!!


Tips on p1:

1. Read all the topics. Bring out the syllabus book and do all the topics that had to be done. Don't leave a thing. One thing you don't get in propulsion 1 paper is lot of options. You have to do 5 out of the 6 questions and leaving a chapter or topic or two can be very risky and as a friend of mine learnt during the last semester when he did left a single chapter and it ruined his above 60 marks!!!

2. Read thoroughly. This will not only equip you to handle all the short type questions but will you better understanding of all the topics as you study them. Everything you will read from the first chapter on basics to the last chapter on lubrication has a link and reading thoroughly will help you understand the salient facts that may go unnoticed if you treat every chapter as an individual unit.

3. This is one of the most important thing that you should do while studying propulsion 1. and this also applies to all the other subjects. Use your imagination to see what you are learning. That is when reading about supercharger and the variables involved see how the variable affect, see how a bigger cylinder will cause more detonation and why air capacity is such and important variable. See it and I know you will have a better and lasting understanding of the subject and will have memorize less things !!

4. As you go through propulsion 1 , you will see there are so many variable as each one affect different parts and things differently and this could become hard to remember but if you imagine and understand the reasons behind the logic once. You can sale through.

5. Fortunately, the topics in propulsion 1 are inter woven and as you progress through your course on propulsion 1you will find it easy to go in chronological order. This will help in better memorization and understanding. For example studying the cc of IC engine is one such topic where a natural progression from detonation to design of SI engine head and then to the design and types of CI head, will be more efficiency than any other way. And this natural progression also has the advantage of quick revision.

6. My biggest mistake was not starting early, So at last I had to prepare some topics quickly and which brought my marks down, but you learn from my mistake. Start early. By this I don't mean not making notes, making notes is no study, memorizing and keeping the things in mind is what I referring to. Prop1 has so many topics and so for a firm grip on all the topics start early, and you won't have to ease through the last topics!!

7. Numerical. Well There are one way of solving the numerical ands that Mr. Natarajan sir teaches very well. Go to the basics and attack the problem. See what is given and what is asked. and answer it. Most of people I see is they refer to the example and try to understand what he is doing. Well all the examples in the books are done in different ways . And I have never followed what they did, I just take the question and solve it the way I know and what eventually matters is the answer and this is what studying in Mr. Natarajan sir's class will teach you!! You will get into this habit of solving with the basics and that I guess is the biggest lesson that one might acquire at a class.'


8. Propulsion 1 diagrams and they are simple and one should draw them neat without much shading and one point to remember is always draw the picture before you explain the thing. This not only helps the paper checker but also helps you to be methodical and you can explain better.


Well as for the baccha, I know he has cleared the propulsion one paper with good marks and all due to his hard work and long hours I heard he put in. Well I don’t know for certain if he is reading or read this but I would certainly like to see a comment or two from him on “Bahaiya How should I study propulsion 1?”

Revision technique to boost your studies

Today learnt a great revision technique from one of my teammate in
office.

We are all attending 5 days training on some new technology and today
was the second day. Yesterday, we began at 8 and finished at 5 with
some good topics and hands on. Today morning he entered and he took
out a sheet of paper and rerun all the things that we did last day.

So how can you apply it in studying for aesi.

Take a paper, and before you begin to read new text, new topic or new
material. Write on the paper all the things that you have learnt the
previous day on the same subject. Ask questions on what you read and
answer them. No need to be clean, concise or correct, just write.
Write whatever you remember. Imagine the terms and get them on paper.
Run through the topics one by one.

Well that's it, once this is done, turn the paper down and get back to
study the new stuff.

There are 3 distinct advantage of this technique.

1. You poke your mind and exercise it to get active and retrive the
information it received earlier. Just by remembering and writing it
out you strengthen the ties.

2. This exercise at the start of your study session sets up the mood
to study further, to learn more and to dive deep.

3. The old things and topics that you bring forward by means of that
paper creates additional pegs that you can hook the new informations in.

Well I believe if you follow just this method, you are well ahead in
your studies. Try it!

Take a day off - How to study for AeSI?

This took me a long time to understand.

When I was in AeSI, i read many times about benefits of taking a day
off but was never able to get myself to do so.

But in section B, with 5 subjects at one go, I had to take a day off
as all the other days were filled with GIE, and Natrajan Sir!!

This is when my studies and study habits improved a lot.

The result was that I cleared, propulsion 1,2,3, aero 1, and advance
strength of materials in one semester.

Studies is just like being in a gym. If after a heavy exercise, you
don't give your body proper rest, you won't see much of an
improvement. Have rest in your exercise routine and you will see your
body blosom.

Similar thing happens with the brain. Give it a day of rest, it gets
the time to reorganise and regroup.

So my advice to every aesi student is take one day off. Study for 6
days. And on the seventh day give it complete freedom to do whatever
it likes. Do everything but studies!!

Choose whatever day, that's not important. Important is choosing a day
to rest and wonder!

Yes seriously if you do any of the thing you will never pass. So do everything that is opposite.

Some thoughts on my-aesi

Many students of aesi email me asking for all sorts of things. Some
ask me advice on specific books, some on how to study maths, some on
how to pass workshop technology and many more.

Well I try to answer this questions as well as I can and as time
permits but most of the time I feel that half of the questions are
already answered on the blog. And this was very reason I added the new
google search functionality in the blog so that older posts are easily
available.

In many earlier posts I have already covered how to study mathematics,
how to study wt? How to study propulsion I, II etc. Well all this
posts were written from what I was learning at those times. All came
from my personal experience.

Now since I am not connected to aesi as a student, I post more on
topics that encircle aesi but are not specific on study techniques.

I hope a existing student start a blog that deals with these issues.
He/she will be more current and will have richer experience to share.

Maximum impact.

This comes when you are consistent. It comes when you are focused. It
comes when you believe you are good and deliver.

How to give maximum impact in aesi?
Study everyday. Learn a new topic each day. Revise the previous
concepts each day.

A two hour concentrated focus is much better than 9 hours of loose
study. Make studying your priority. Share what you learn with others.
Discuss the concepts.

Be positive. Know your abilities and trust them. Seek personal growth
push your boundaries. Study with an attitude to be a better engineer,
exams are just the tollgates in the path.

This are some simple steps which when followed will enable you to have
maximum impact.

How to become more consistent like the Australian cricket team?

its raining outside. raining lightly but consistently. it was raining when I woke up at 2 in the night and its raining now. As i peek out of my window,I can see the pecks of rains running down illuminated by the street light.

This reminds of the matches that are to be played between India and Australia and one thing that Australian team emanates is being consistent.

One lesson that I draw from them is to be consistent. Consistent in your performance. How can one become consistent in performance. Even the Indian cricket team fails to do that but look at the Australians. they are the most consistent cricket team of the world. Consistent in winning, day after day, match after match. How do they do that ? what helps them to beat the odds, what makes the team to deliver so consistently?

I think I know apart of the answer. some came to me as I was reading and the other came by following Shane Waugh's team of IPL. He lead the Rajasthan royals to victory and did very impressive job building a team of consistent players.

So what are the factors that we can apply in our life to be consistently productive and efficient.

The whole idea of consistency does not depend on being perfect but on being regular. Lets say I want to be consistent in posting to this blog. Sometimes I post 7 articles a week and in some I barely manage 2. Its not consistency. So to be more productive and consistent in my posting. I have lowered my bar and now I have made a pact with my self that I will post at least 5 articles per week. So that amounts to one post for each weekday.

Setting this limit and now all I have to do is write one post a day and if I do this, I know I will be consistent.

Same can be applied to your studies. As mentioned in this tips for study, commit to your mind that you will study for at least one hour a day. This is the minimum that you will put in no matter what and if you follow it, you will see that everyday you are making more progress. In my AeSI days I saw that someday I was ultra productive and did 8 hours of study and on some days I barely opened my books. What was lacking was consistency. so I set a minimum 1 hour of study limit and that did wonders. when I knew I have to study one hour, I out performed my previous weekly average. Moreover as time went I slowly and steady increased my minimum bar.

Same happened when I had wanted to brush up my skills, I did set a 30 mins limit for practicing Nastran after my regular work at NAL and I quickly mastered it.

The secret of consistency is regularity, setting up your minimum effort and then doing it no matter what.

Aerodynamics aerospace interview question and answers

Yesterday I asked you 12 questions that you can face in an aerospace
interview. Today I am giving answers to those.

Aerodynamics is a branch of fluid dynamics concerned with the study of
gas flows.

The solution of an aerodynamic problem normally involves calculating
for various properties of the flow, such as velocity, pressure,
density, and temperature, as a function of space and time.

Understanding the flow pattern makes it possible to calculate or
approximate the forces and moments acting on bodies in the flow.

Two ways of aerodynamics are an experimental one, using wind tunnel
etc. and the numerical one, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

It is the science of predicting fluid flow, heat and mass transfer,
chemical reactions, and related phenomena by solving numerically the
set of governing mathematical equations. A discretization of the
spatial domain into small cells to form a volume mesh is needed, and
then a suitable algorithm is applied to solve the equations of motion.

The results of CFD analysis are relevant in conceptual studies of new
designs and detailed product development as well as troubleshooting
and redesign. It complements testing and experimentation of a new
design, reducing the total effort required in the experiment design
and data acquisition.

Aerodynamic problems can be classified in a number of ways.
1. Based on the flow environment
External/ Internal aerodynamics

2. Based on the ratio of the problem's characteristic flow speed to
the speed of sound
Subsonic/Supersonic
3. Based on viscosity in the flow
Viscous/ Non viscous flow

External aerodynamics is the study of flow around solid objects of
various shapes, for example the study of a wing profile, whereas
internal aerodynamics is the study of flow through passages in solid
objects, for example the study of the internal flow of a wind tunnel,
especially of the boundary layers near its walls

Navier-Stokes equations are named after Claude-Louis Navier and George
Gabriel Stokes!!

Navier-Stokes equations are a set of equations that establish that
changes in momentum of the particles of a fluid are simply the product
of changes in pressure and dissipative viscous forces acting inside
the fluid. These viscous forces originate in molecular interactions
and dictate how viscous a fluid is. Thus, the Navier-Stokes equations
are a dynamical statement of the balance of forces acting at any given
region of the fluid.

Navier-Stokes equations are one of the most useful sets of equations
because they describe the physics of a large number of phenomena like
ocean currents, water flow in a pipe, flow around an airfoil, etc.

My question answer is just a preview of what one will face in an
interview. Hope this helps you to be better prepared for all aerospace
interviews.

3 things to study before you head for an interview.

I was involved in couple interviews this last month and as I was experiencing the interview process once again I got reminded of the basics that a person going for interview must study before he heads for an interview. So I jotted down the main points of this post as I awaited my call for the interview along with the other candidates.

1. Study the requirements clearly.

This is the first step, not knowing the requirement is just like not know knowing where to aim at, not knowing what to shoot and not knowing  where you are headed. So first and foremost point is get to know the requirements, what are they looking for, what skills they desire, how much experience they want and have listed on the requirement.

2. Study your cv.

Yes your CV, the CV that brought you to the interview, ascertain what attracted your resume to the requirement, what your CV has that makes you good for the job, how the skills and experience listed in your cv matches to the requirement and what are the skills and points that you can highlight during the interview from your CV that match with the requirement.

3. Study your projects and basics of what you have written in your resume.

Take special note of the experience and the projects you have written, rehearse what those projects are and be prepared to tell someone in simple terms if you are ask you to explain a particular project, know the basics of the projects. If you have done a project on transient performance analysis of gas turbines, be prepared to answers with the questions on gas turbine basics. Likewise if stress analysis of centrifugal compressor is your forte then be prepared to answers basic questions regarding stresses and compressor.

 

Will studying the above 3 things will only help secure you that job? Well yes it will help but articulating what you know in the interview will be the main deal. So practice your answers before hand. Don’t have a bookish answers but do have general idea on what and how to answers. Frame your answers based on your knowledge of the requirement, on what you written on your cv and to highlight the skills that are required for the job. Answer in a way to highlight the points on your resume that fit with the requirement.

So this are some of the ways one can prepare for a technical interview. Remember that in an interview (or in a job) you will only succeed if your skills, experience and most of all your interest match!!

AeSI results is what all the AeSI students will be waiting for now. And many of you might have begun studying for the next semester. So I thought I will share some of the tips so that the next semester is more fruitful and productive for all of you.


My most productive semesters were the once in which I had made clear cut goals or targets. While in section-B I took up propulsion-1, propulsion-2, propulsion-3 and aerodynamics as my subjects. This were tough subjects and whenever I told the choice of subjects to any of my friends they stared at me and I guess laughed behind my back at my foolishness of taking all the tough and big ones at one go. But my task in that semester was simple. I took the subjects thinking that they will be related and then there was the fact that all of them were to be taught by Mr. Natrajan sir. He is the most productive teacher I have seen in my entire life. I mean he used to come at 7am in morning and then used to continue teaching till 9 in the evening. At tea breaks we always used to wonder from where he gets so much stamina or energy to teach. This is when I challenged myself that if I wanted distraction free study then I need to emulate Natarajan sir and I took all his subjects at one go and I cleared all the four subjects that semester with getting the highest marks in propulsion-3 and aerodynamics!!!


Here I want to tell you 3 things that did the magic for me. I used the word magic because like magic this whole thing can be accomplished by some careful planning and preparation.

1. First and foremost was that I took up the class in GIE and never skipped any of the lectures of Natrajan sir. During that time some bhaiya was also giving propulsion classes and majority of students were enrolled for his tuitions, but I kept my focus on Natrajan sir. Yes he doesn’t cover the entire syllabus and sometime miss some of it but I think knowledge is like energy. My best came from the fact that I took the knowledge from Natrajan sir and not from some bhiya. As thermodynamics teaches us. Energy degrades from one from to other so I wanted the purest and so I stayed with Natrajan sir and it really helped. How? See that particular bhiya also studied from him. But what is the most important thing was he was just imparting the knowledge of propulsion while Natrajan sir, with his years of experience was teaching us the same thing but was also sowing the seeds of problem solving. I will write a separate post of the things AeSI students can learn from Natranjan sir latter some time.

2. Plan your study hours. This is one important step. Plan on the numbers of hours you want to put in everyday for your studies. The no of hours shouldn’t be the maximum that you can give. But they should be the minimum that you pledge yourself that you will be able to give everyday no matter what. In my case I knew with no other things to do I could do 7 hours study easily but then this hours I didn’t knew if the classes and other activities will permit me to have them always. So I gave myself 2 hours everyday. Yes 2 hours. This is the minimum I have to give to my studies everyday for that semester. I wanted consistency and this minimum 2 hours gave, me that. I always overshot this hours but knowing that I have put in my minimum hours target for that day helped keeping me positive.

3. Use library extensively. I have written a long article back then of the benefits of library. And if you had been in GIE during that time. You would have always seen me at GIE’s library everyday. This is where my minimum 2 hours were always consumed. Not only it gave me the perfect peaceful and undistracted place to study but having so many reference books at hand increased the breadth of the knowledge that I studied. Please do read the advantages of studying in library that I found then.

So these were the 3 things that every AeSI students can emulate in his or her own study schedule to get the maximum out of this semester. What else do you recommend for a productive semester? Have other tips for studying productivity, do share in comments.

Recently in OURAeSi and in AeSI groups, this is the hot topic is regarding the best study center for AeSI! I think it will interesting to highlight some of the good points there, so here it is.

Its really disappointing to note that so many AeSI Engineers who are based in India have been unable to come up with decent Study center with practical labs facility in one of location in India where maximum students can benefit from such venture.There is no point of running Institutions without proper lab facility like any Engineering Colleges.So far only HIET,Chennai has labs of some standard for new syllabus of AeSI.I am not sure about labs facility of other Colleges running AeSI programmes in India.

Don't go there. I studied there. The institute does not provide good knowledge.
Exam will be in Delhi. Better to go chennai. Ganesh institute of engineering, St. Thomas mount, Chennai. This is very cheap & best amount all other institute.

I studies AMAeSI in Indian insitute of Aeronautical engineering (IIAE), Dehradun & Ganesh institute of Engineer (GIE), Chennai. I found that student passed from IIAE paid very high amount of fees, does not get guidance & competition amount the group. You may be only single who pass section -A in IIAE. I saw 90% student who left AMAeSI without clearing any subject, Where as in GIE, I found that few of candidate have finish their degree (AMAeSI) in 2.5 years followed by 3 years to maximum four years. Very few about 10% candidate may left without even single subject.

I have finished my 12th std this year with good marks.I am from Chennai.Joining Aeronautical engineering was my ambition right from my young age and i joined that group in Hindustan university Chennai. Many people are saying that i have taken a wrong decision by joining that college because it has become a deemed one this year only. I don't think you have made any mistake by joining there.Till you study honestly for your Aeronautical Engineering Degree ,you should be fine in your prospective career.No schools or colleges study,its the student who studies honestly and with utmost dedication shines in there future career.

Mr.Shraveen ,I am jannani doing my final year B.E Aeronautical in Hindustan Coimbatore.You need not regret for your decision. Don't care about others telling you about this course or your college.Among some of the colleges in TN your colleges is the best for Aeronautical Eng. So don't bother about people who says tat u r wrong.Wat u have to do now is don't expect ur coll or ur professors to feed u the syllabus.Instead ,be advanced,gather the materiales and start studying on your own. maintain at least 75% consistently.Be confirm in what branch u r interested (designing,maintenance,space,pilot training,air force) and work for tat right from now. If u want any help via this field you can contact me.I ll try my best to help u.Wish u good luck.

I personally recommend GIE as its the best in terms of studies and most of the past and present students of AeSI are from there only!!

Back in July 2007, exactly 2 years back I posted this poll "Will you recommend AMAeSI to your friends and family." and the poll is still going on.

As I revisited it I saw that No is still wining. And I found many interesting comparison that people made about AMAeSI. Chief among them were.

AMAeSI course is like AIDS. and Doing AeSI is like walking in a dark alley with a moving target.

AMAeSI is definitely hard but not impossible like how some other people here are saying! I am currently doing my 4th semester and I have passed 8 subjects of Section A. True u have to work much harder than normal BE or B.Tech students but the knowledge you gain is far more than the others students, that’s why the first 20 ranks in the GATE examinations are usually taken up by AMAeSI students! Going for AeSI is like going for target who u can see before moving but once u follow that u will lose most important years I can’t tell how many because only few are the ones who achieve that and the one who achieves is on the seventh heaven so try for btech through competitions like IIT , aieee ,uptu etc. best of luck

well, I have completed diploma in electronics and telecommunication engineering from IETE-Delhi its also a distance learning course like AMAeSI, now let know something about AMAeSI 1. Its is an govt. recognized course but not AICTE approved or UGC 2. Its very very difficult course, and there are few persons who know about this course 3. Its is easy to says 4 yrs degree course but only few body can pass AeSI within 4yrs. 4. this course is for who they doing service like in air force, navy, or other private companies, if you have lower score in 12th or diploma then try to prepare for JEE, AIEEE, and join IIT, MIT, anna university, UP technical collage, punjab university or other top university in India, or you can study abroad for aeronautical or aerospace engg. but keep in mind that try to avoid AeSI for making your future.

I just cant recommend other for this..as we know its too tough to clear all the papers within 4yrs..even we r not satisfied with our paper checking,question pattern, so AICTE approval degree is better. at least they can complete their degree within 4yrs. so just forget about AESI.

I kindly suggest to any one don’t come to this course for aero engg u go to IIT’s or isro started new college ....... do your best in 12th n try to crack iit jee or aieee........ otherwise go though any regular course its cheapest course but u have to face lot of problems n have to spend min one yr more to join t our job so if u have that DUM then only dare to do it!!!!!!!!!!

After all that we have suffered I strongly recommend that do not join AeSI. Being in AeSI u seem to miss the charm of doing regular B.E Degree. No I will never recommend it to anyone, I’m not saying that this course is bad but the whole process of this course is nothing but a torture, and these r not my words this is from someone who holds a responsible position in society itself. well in my words, the society authorities r just for namesake,whenever we try to communicate with them they abuse us, well apart from that when u somehow complete it, then starts real problems, no recognition, unpaid trainings,treatment like an uneducated laborer. a graduate from any regular college will be given better salary for the same post but not to us. the process most of the time takes so much of time that we after completing it end up somewhere else, coz in this whole frustrating and long journey we loose our passion and energy , we forget y we joined this particular course and we in end satisfies with whatever comes our way, coz there r people waiting for us to complete, they r dependent on us, n they have almost lost hope on us. so if in the end if we r going to satisfy with anything then y opting for this torture. go to any other college and feel the college environment , coz I really feel that in this whole process I missed this important thing of life. some people may not agree with me but all this I have personally experienced and I can tell u the names of so many students and graduates who r going through the same n heading towards satisfying for anything. so I will never recommend this course for anyone.

3 ways to beat AeSI's uncertainty!!

As you begin your journey with AeSI for yet another semester, here are
3 things to keep in mind that will help you beat AeSI's uncertainty!!

Do not believe in the previous years question papers, instead use a
syllabus book. Just studying with an eye on the previous years
questions is sure shot way of drowning. Instead use syllabus book to
guide you, what to study. Use the question papers to regularly check
your progress.

Go under the topics. Study with your mind.
Just mugging up all the topics, without understanding anything won't
help you. A all night haul before the exam may cruise you out of that
exam, but in the long run, you will need that knowledge if you want to
be an engineer. So study with your mind. Understand and study.

Be prepared. AeSI's is like a tenis match where they want to exhaust

With the month of May nearing to an end, I am sure every aesi student
