NAL NAL and NAL

Hi there ,

To give you an update on what i am doing this days. Well i am Doing
UN - paid training in NAL. NAL,the lab recognised as one of CSIR's
best-managed national laboratories undertaking over a hundred high
science high technology R&D projects in aerospace, is the place i am
from 8 to 6 every weekdays!!!!

It was established on 1 June 1959 with offices in Delhi and moved to
Bangalore on 1 March 1960. I am at the bellur campus and for all
those guys who don't know why it is the bellur campus!! Its
because the lab is on the banks of the Bellandur lake. Yes that
ugly, stinky stream that you see while heading for it in the NAL
bus is the bellandur lake, once pure, but today a stream of nalla!!!
Tanks to us!!! But lets not talk of the environment now, this
is my roommates field and i would like to leave this to him to
write about.

Anyway this NAL campus houses the Nilakantan wind tunnele, named
after the first director of NAL Dr P Nilakantan (1910-1964). IT was
his passion and the drive that erected this 1.2m x 1.2m trisonic
wind tunnel !! And to all those folks in NAl who walk by the
wind tunnel, without bothering to take a second look, next time you
are near this structure do remember that every Indian aerospace
vehicle has graduated out of this remarkable facility!!!

Three things I've learned in NAL - revisited

For those you, who might not know, after AeSI, I did training in NAL under Dr. Ramamurthy and during that time I wrote many blog entries though my reliance mobile phone. This is one of those….

 

This might be my first entry or a rarest entry on my experience in NAL. Well the three things are work hard; no work is small and be a delivery boy. That is, deliver what is expected of you. Come to an organization like this and you will realize the importance of aesi. You'll realize how it has lifted you without your knowing.

 

...You'll realize the truth when someone says "Gadhe ko ghora banati hai aesi" Don't want to say that AeSI's way is right but after coming and hearing by your own ears, you see the truth in word that Mr. Bishnujee uses for aesi graduates. Specialist! Yes it’s true. Maybe seeing the results and facing uncertain exams don't inspire this feeling, but trust me; once you are in this side of the river you will definitely see my point. Anyway hope here's wishing that the reforms aesi is doing now do bear fruits and do make one feel proud of your degree while doing it.

 

Well this was my post in the http://my-aesi.blogspot.com in January 2006. As you will notice the post is not complete. Since at that time I had reliance phone and I used it to send my posts via its mobile internet and it never allowed more than 160 character, so while sending posts with breaks, the flow broke and I missed out the points. So i thought of revisiting the topic.

 

As mentioned earlier, working hard, do all work required of you and being a delivery boy was what I learnt from NAL. I have touched about the realization of the knowledge that i gathered during AeSI only after coming to NAL. But I missed out the delivery boy stuff.

 

Well by that I meant. When you are given a task, deliver the result not an excuse. As my previous mentor in NAL used to say, "Give me results not excuses!"  Push yourself here in your training days and you will reap rich rewards!  Whenever we mentioned that we don't this software, he always chided us “You are young, learn it and deliver!!" So NAL made cemented the delivery in me. 

 

So folks if you are doing training at any of the institution, be diligent and make the most of the time you are there. Sometimes the tasks assigned to you might look un-engineer type, mundane and plain simple, but remember AeSI might have given you the aero skills and knowledge but the social, writing and other skills you will develop here in your training working among real people, real work and in real world!!

Worries and confusions during training

Today someone emailed me with this following content..... Since it's the end of my project so I am pretty busy, so I forwarded the mail to my good friend kishore for the query. And he has exactly expressed my sentiments on the matter.

I am posting this email and kishore's reply so that any other person in the same situation should have the right guidance at that time.


Respected sir,

I have given my last paper of propulsion stream and I am waiting for my result. And i am working in National Aerospace laboratories as project trainee and my project is Design a single stage of transonic compressor and generate a blade profile. for this i am using Fortran95 and I developed a small program for rotor .


so I want to know whether there is scope of such coding in fortran and if I completed my graduation this time then is there opportunities to work in coding . Whether companies use to consider such a predgree experience. kindly suggest me some of the companies where I can apply.

Other thing is I got selected in InfoTech Bangalore as a Assistant design engineer

But they want me to work in Technical Publication as they have Pratt & Whitney engine.

I have to sign a bond of 3 years and they said depending upon performance they may send to Canada for on job work. so I need your suggestion which way is better whether its good to work as trainee here in NAL or grab the job.

I am in confused state of mind and unable to make decision so kindly help to make decision

Dear ankush,

Well first of , I would like to wish u all the very best for your results. Now coming to your mail , well you asked 2-3 questions , your first question is that whether there is enough scope for FORTRAN coding these days or not.

First of all by going through what you have written in ur mail , I believe you are doing some decent work in NAL as project trainee. Another thing is that although FORTRAN is considered as a old scientific programming language but in the recent time , during last two years I have seen loads of requirements of FORTRAN Programmers. Mainly for the development of simulation software's used in aerospace and other engineering domains.

But I would like to add one thing from my own experience here that just having some idea about FORTRAN language and understanding FORTRAN programming are two different things. Let me tell u one thing , if u r sure that u have a sound understanding of not only FORTRAN but also the programming concept and not just the language , there are enough opportunities available outside. Just remember this same thing applies not just to Fortran but to everything u r doing.

I believe the combination of work u r doing (i.e. turbomachinery + programming ) is in much demand , just be very confident about whatever u r saying u know. If u r working on turbomachinery like compressors then try to expand ur understanding of it and atleast be very confident about the basics.

Next thing is that ask one question to urself that if the money factor is removed then are you happy with the kind of work you r doing in NAL and do u think that u r learning something new. If yes then my personal opinion is that please spend some time in NAL and complete your learning process because after NAL u will not get much opportunity to learn so don't worry about the predegree experience thing , just concentrate on what u r doing and learn it fully, use ur time in NAL, don't waste a single hour coz this time in NAL will take u to places in future. I have seen many previous students just like u who did the same kind of project which u r doing in NAL , they worked hard and impressed everyone with their efforts and today all of them are well settled and doing very well and offcourse earning very well also.

So stop worrying and don't get confused. U r about to become an engineer, so be very confident n try to feel the work u r doing.

Now as far as joining InfoTech for technical documentation is concerned then there are ways of looking at this . if u r in a very serious financial crisis and the situation is like u need money at any cost then u can join anything offcourse technical documentation also and earn money . but if r not in that kind of situation then I would advise u not to join infotech for technical documentation and spend some more time in NAL. After doing ur project in NAL successfully u will definitely get much better opportunities , I m sure about that.

If InfoTech offers u job in any other domain like engine division or design department then I can say ok join but in my opinion don't go for technical documentation now. I believe u still have time to give ur future a much better shape.

Look a job is a job but technical documentation is certainly not a very creative type of job. And in longer run I can tell u from my experience that no matter how much u earn but it is the kind of work u do which brings the satisfaction. If u r not doing the job which u feel is exciting and interesting then u may loose ur energy and confidence and even u may loose respect among your peers.

So u r at the right stage to decide what kind of work u want to do in future , just imagine urself in that environment and start working towards the realization of that environment. If u put a little effort everyday, u will definitely get it.

The companies in which u can try for (Fortran + turbomachinery )are:

1: GE

2: Geometric softwares

3: NOUS infosystems (though not in turbo machinery)

4: Honeywell (mainly ask for C programmers + turbomachinery knowledge)

5: Infotech

6: SAFRAN and many others.

Another suggestion is that keep track of market requirements and start preparing urself don't wait for any call , prepare urself in every aspect in which an engineer should be prepared.

Stipendiary training programmes in NAL

Applications for one-year training programmes at the Diploma, Graduate (BE/BTech/MSc/MCA etc) and post graduate (ME/MTech/MPhil only) levels are invited.Click here to access application form.

a) These programmes are designed to induct fresh Diplomas, Graduates and Post-Graduates in different disciplines to get an exposure to the various facilities and S & T developments and to take part in the ongoing R & D programmes of NAL. CSIR Diamond Jubilee Research Interns

CSIR has introduced a new HRD initiative – The CSIR Diamond Jubilee Research Interns Awards to be implemented in all the CSIR labs effecting from April 2003. The aim of the scheme is to induct 30 young Interns to work in the R & D environment to imbibe the spirit of enquiry and learning through participation The selection of candidates is done newspaper announcement followed by interview by a committee.

NAL's pasteboard is window of Indian aerospace

NAL Pasteboard (http://www.nal.res.in/pages/pasteboard.htm) is the
webpage i visit to get a glimpse on what is happening in Indian
aerospace scene. Although its primarily highlights NAL's activities
but by doing so provides the flavor of Indian aerospace industry.

Form Highlights on new Ramjet / Scramjet propulsion research to new
composite wings, From ISRO's launch vehicle test to GTRE's engine
screen test, NAL reflects all the major projects working in Indian
aerospace.

I have been reading it since 9 years!! And as far as i know, this is
one page that gets updated every week. After this the other Indian
aerospace page that gets updated is ISRO's website.

This page is a must for any student of AeSI who is desirous to get

Questions On AeSI training

A few days back I wrote about 11 questions one should ask if he desires to go for training after AeSI. And I promised that I will post my answers to the questions that I had, so here we go. Hope this will give you some insight and direction in your quest for training after AeSI.

What is my goal for doing the training?

Well when I was at the training stage of AeSI, my most important criteria was to get into a environment which gave me the opportunity to learn and apply my skills. I already had the programming knack and I enjoyed thermodynamic and the propulsion subjects so I wanted to learn something that was based on these two skills. Catia or any CAE software were not in my mind. I was ready to accept learning catia or any other CAD but I wanted to test the waters for my programming skills and the stream I was graduating from.

Is there an alternate way I can fulfill this goal?

Since I had one subject (that is VMD ) left to clear and had the time so I initiated my training to make fruitful use of the time I had and my goal was to learn whatever I can and then give exams while doing this.

What skills I will develop with this training?

For me CAD and CAE skills were not the primary goal. When I joined NAL, my primary focus was what I knew and how I can apply it to the benefit of the mentor who took me as a trainee. So as I sat for the small interview with Dr Ramamurthy sir, my focus was on the c and small vb skills that I had. In fact those were the highlights of my resume at that time.

Are the skills congruent with my specialization?

In those days performance job was the only thing propulsion stream guys did. It was the in thing and for this excel and knowledge of one programming language was the most important so while I joined NAL, I was prepared to focus on these tool and skills. They were as I knew then congruent with my desire of working in an aerospace organization on software development and tools development

How much time I'll spend on the tools?

At the time of joining I made a goal that I will put at least 1 hours of my time in the tools that I want to learn and explore. In my last semester of AeSI, I employed a similar technique and put in a daily goal in which I wrote one c program daily. So I can decided to carry on the same here in my training and made a daily target to put in one hour minimum of my time in learning the tools that are available at my disposal in NAL. I set this minimum one hour limit and vowed not to miss it any day.

Does the skills I will learn congruent with my job goals?

As fate has been, I knew C but when I joined NAL and began working, my mentor handed me FORTRAN programs which I was supposed to run, and debug. This changed my course and without considering a bit I began learning FORTRAN putting the needed hours into it. Then as I began picking it, I was entrusted VB which I began learning in earnest and so as things progressed I picked up the skills that I am now using in my present and last work. So I would say at that time I just wanted to learn something and the best thing that I did then was I didn't block anything that came my way. I just accepted the opportunity that the work brought and carried on and I am thankful that I did so.

Is the mentor I will be working under well known or known to be good?

Yes this was best for me. Even before joining NAL, my friends told that if you want a good training then Dr Ramamurthy was the best for a propulsion stream guy. So He was the first person I approached and by luck I got through. He liked my resume and I got selected. I am glad and will forever be indebted to have him as my first boss later when I joined NAL as a contract engineer.

What are my 3 specific targets from this training?

My 3 specific goals during the training were.

  • To apply what I knew to the benefit of my mentors work, be it in programming, designing or analysis.
  • To be market ready and learn whatever is presented in my way
  • To gather skills and experience that will help me get a job after the training

How long I am willing to put in the time in what I do?

Since I still had one subject to clear, so  I knew 6 months was “pakka” for me to stay and I decided that  I will stay 6 months more before I head for any job. I even promised Dr Ramamurthy about this and in reality I stayed more than that duration and it was all worth it.

Do I really believe all the answers I have written?

When I did this training and decided to join, I knew what I am good at. So I wanted to test the water and wanted to see what I can learn and what I love the most. Even though my thoughts were not so clear about what I liked more (programming or designing or analysis), but I knew I wanted to explore my possibilities and areas of interest and training in NAL did fulfill all my wishes and helped me know what I enjoyed the most and wanted to work.

How will you quantify your success at the training?

This was one thing that I did in two ways one was to log the hours on each software that I worked on. So every night I came home and noted the hours that I put in each software. This helped me learn incrementally. Sometime even when there was no work I just explored that software and tinkering with it, always taught me a thing or two.

Another way I quantified my success was by crafting my resume, all that work that I did there increased my work experience and taught me new software tools every month, so I made a resume every 2 month with the updated new skills and work and posted it in naukri.com. This updating showed me that I was learning and the posting of resume in naukri brought in the new offers in my email that showed me what kind of profile I was building with the skills I was acquiring.

So that’s it,It has become a longer post that usual but I hope it helps AeSI students who are looking for training to clarify their thoughts and helps make them better choices.

Buck up aeronautical engineers of india , lot of work coming your way


Top aerospace news round up can be the other title of this post but the one i choose capture the theme of all the news that had happened in Indian aerospace industry last week. The biggest news that happened last week has to be the International Conference on Aerospace Science and Technology (INCAST) that was held in Bangalore from June 2 to June 28, 2008.


The conference,organized as a part of Golden Jubilee celebration of the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore had the main objective to provide a platform for International R&D organization, Academia and Industrial agencies to present their latest achievements and explore the possibility of deriving synergies. This conference also presented the current aerospace activity in the country apart from showcasing the Aerospace Technologies of NAL.The conference provided a forum for discussion for further advancement of aerospace science & technology in the country to cater to the future requirements of national aerospace programs.

Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. Prof R Narasimha, Chairman, Engineering Mechanics Unit, JNCAR, and Dr G Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space were the main attraction of the conference.

Many important announcements were made during the conference. One among them was related to saras. The third weight optimized version of saras will fly in the next year. Since G Madhavan Nair was present, an announcement on chandrayaan launch was also made. Apart from this ISRO chief also made a call to the aeronautics industry of India to wake up and capture the national market. This was one of the significant remark. It hints that in future private-public partnership is going to increase and aerospace engineers of India will have good demand.

Opening up of the Indian economy and globalisation are taking a heavy toll on NAL, as director A.R. Upadhya said "“We are hit hard by talent crunch. Many of our well-trained scientists and technologists are either resigning or taking voluntary retirement in droves to join the private sector or multi-nationals in pursuit of professional advancement with hefty pay packets"

Well that was the high lights of the aerospace conference held by NAL. Apart from this there were also a news of NAL building India's fastest supercomputer.

So you see, NAL and the conference dominated the news. But within all this news there was one good news for all avionics engineer out there, as French defence and electronics major Thales announced to double its Indian business from 250 million to 500 million euros in the next five years.

Taking of France, it is also keenly interested in making inroads in Indian aerospace industry as there are chances that India and France may soon join to make surface to air missiles just in lines of Indo-russian Brahmos supersonic cruise missile. Good news for Indian aeronautical engineers, so folks get those french classes, who knows.

Have you ever noticed that all the aerospace activities of India are all concentrated in Bangalore, but this might change in future as there are reports and signs that chandigarh is also betting big on aerospace. An IDS infotech is a new company to watch.


And for all the aviation buffs and maintainance streams guys, rejoice as Lufthansa Technik, the world’ s largest maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company, will set up a facility in the country, in a joint venture with the Hyderabad-based GMR group

So this were the top news of the last week, some of themn are significant and will surely affect the aerospace professional. But overall the aerospace outlook for India is positive. So buck up aeronautical engineers, lot of work coming your way. Read more news at indianaeronews blog.

My biggest lesson from NAL?

I did apprenticeship at nal after my aesi. This is the place I call
the birthplace of my confidence. Working here I gathered the skills
and self belief that's essential for work.

So in this post I would like to highlight the biggest lessons that I
took while working in NAL!

Concentrate on your assigned work. Everything else will follow!

When I entered NAL I had this preconceived notion that working on
catia will be the best thing that can happen to me as that was the
hottest tool to have in my resume. Guess what the lab I joined didn't
use catia.

Initially I was feeling unhappy but took whatever task was assigned to
me. Gave my 100% to the task without resentment and without thinking
of going back to some other place whete catia can be part of my resume.

And this served me well. As I began completing the tasks, I began
getting tasks of richness that I never realized before. My task became
more and more sofisticated. From gas turbine performance, to design
and analysis of mixed flow centrifugal compresssor, I found myself
working in some of the top projects of my boss.

From my boss, I got projects involving more complexity and new
features. This strenghtened by fortran, vba, c skills. This approach
taught me nastran, ansys, solidworks, and matlab!

And none of this tool, I was working on trivial projects but projects
that increases and expanded my knowledge.

Lesson for everyone who is doing training in nal, isro, gtre etc

Don't judge your work to be trivial!! Every task is important.

A modern gas turbine engine has 30,000 parts and each one from the
bolt to the blade has it's own importance. Failure of one will lead to
an incomplete engine.

So take up whatever work you are assigned and make the most of it.
Every task has it's importance. You maynot realize it then but give
your 100% in the task you are assigned!!

Expand your knowledge, and rise from the framework of tasks you are
meant to do!!


This was my biggest lesson from nal and I am glad I did stick to the
tasks !

Best career path to follow after AeSI

Can you suggest me the best career path to follow after AeSI ? I came to know that it will be best to first work in the organisations like NAL, GTRE, ADE etc. as a trainee engineer and then pursue M. Tech. or find a job. Is this right?

I have tried preparing a 'priortized' list for the subject matter.
Based on individual's launch-conditions, the term 'best career path' can be any 1 or many out of the following:
1. Clearing gate and pursuing ME/MTech in Indian universities and finding job via campus, provided you have time, funding and brains.

2. Clearing GRE/TOEFL/IELTS etc. to pursue ME/MS in overseas universities (requirement remains same as in 1.)

3. Clearing DRDO-SET/CSIR for NAL/ADA/any such compatible exam to become Scientist-B.

4. Apply for Junior Research Fellowship-GATE i.e. JRF-GATE in NAL, Bangalore which leads to induction of candidate as research fellow. 2 years of contractual service sponsorship and eligibility for applying ME/MS (under NAL sponsorship). This even leads to sponsorship for PhD (60% in degree and a valid gate score, check NAL website for further details).

5. JR Fellowship with ADA, Bangalore

6. Pursuing training (paid/unpaid) leading to accumulation of strong analytical engineering experience strengthens ones candidature for private companies.
Experts can add further to this list.

One year review

Well i'll be completing one year in nal now. What have i achieved and learnt during this time. What areas i've become confident and what things and stuff i've learnt. I'm confident in solidworks, matlab and in design and performance analysis of gas turbines. This is the area i'm confident and would like to stretch myself in that area. Nal and under my boss i've learnt to apply my programming skills in aerospace domain. I've become more confident in languages like c, vb and fortran. And most important thing that nal has taught is the importance of what i've learn't. The broad knowledge that we get in aesi years was clearly highlighted in my tenure in nal. This has shown that i know something and the knowledge i've have gained is not wasted, and has use in all the work that i'll do in future.... Well will write more on this more. But from now i think i'll write more on my job search because this is where now my majority of my time is devoted.

Take up a Tool early on in your AeSI days

skills-aesi As I began after AeSI I had certain advantages and one advantage that set me up against all was my programming skills. This skills has helped me from the training days of NAL to till now. I am glad I was introduced to computers earlier on and this sparked my life long love with computers.

I guess the immediate responsive nature of computers have attracted me. From the time I have worked on, every year  I picked up some new skills in it an that in tern fueled the extra passion.When I entered NAL I was proficient in c due to my policy of writing one c program daily in my last semester, from there onward during the NAL days I got a hang on vbscript and VBA, and vb. As I gathered each skills and learnt new tools, this programming bug grew bigger. My majority of the task was on computers in NAL, even when I didn’t have any access to any tools because of license being occupied or system busy, I sat on a computer that had excel and tinkered with it.

This tinkering nature is the one which I will attribute all my learning success. Its this enquiring attitude that has made my life easy now as I accomplish things that might take days but now happen in couple of hours. Learning excel had brought so many benefits.

So take up a tool early on in your AeSI days, if you don’t have access to the big tools like catia, ansys, nastran etc. Don’t worry begin with excel.  You will be thanking yourself in the long run. Even you have no PC at hand utilize the cyber cafe pc or any PC that you can but make sure you learn and get a hang of the tool. Use the resource of internet. The excuse how do I do it is no longer valid. Every how is available on the net search. Why do you think I analyzed the results of AeSI  since 2002, yes analyzing it was part of my exercise to learn excel. That exercise taught me excel graphs!!! So take up a tool and begin tinkering. Proficiency in a tool is just a matter of hours that you will put in it. So put in some specified amount of time everyday. Be consistent and you will kiss the stars.

IF they can do it, why can't NAL?

Yesterday was good day in a sense as i saw the flights of 6 r/c
aircraft's. Well in a way it was like my first test flight. only
difference being instead of testing own-build aircraft we were
assembled there for a session of seeing these commercial radio
controlled planes fly. The event went well, with only 6-7 people
involved and a total of 12 person present there at the time of flights
, everything went smoothly.

First test flight of a flying saucer type aircraft failed. It couldn't
generate enough lift to be up.After two and three miss starts, one
particular light weight plane did the flight we all were waiting for,
it soared high and was up in the sky for 4 minutes, with making
several rounds above us and finally making a smooth real aircraft type
landing. It got the applause we all were ready to release.

The most expected disappointment was the helicopter, it had some cool
advancements, as i learnt latter, but it was flimsy and fragile and
it paid the price at the very beginning of the show.

The supersonic stealth fighter type aircraft also impressed, as i saw
Sankar Narayan sir, taking much interest in it, probably because he
has selected that very triangular wing configuration and also the fact
that this aircraft was much smaller. But this one had an inherent
disadvantage of no rudder and aileron, so all the work needs to be
done with differential control of the aircraft's propellers!!!

An interesting incident happened when Radha Krish sir piloted the
stealth aircraft and it went straight to the bushes.

One particular thing that i learnt today was about SN sir,( he is
kis's boss,) was that he has foresight and he thought of everything
and he was prepared to have a tea biscuit party after the show and it
was i think his best demonstration.

He is a hard task master and has the unique ability to inspire
people. Full of tales and anecdotes, he never fails to tell you a
tale or something. So here in the NAL cricket ground, during the
flight test, he assembled the talents of Indian Aeronautical and
challenged them to think up of ways to ignite the passion.

At that time, while on the show this all looked like nothing, what
good it is when you see that NAL, India's premiere lab which has
graduates like SARAS, HANSA and LCA, will let there scientists fly
commercial radio controlled air crafts. It looked like shame. But
now i realize the real purpose behind the show and it shows how
clever SN sir is. With this field trip he reignited the flame of
creativity , challenge in everyone present there. He instilled "If
they can do it, why can't NAL"

2008 is ending and many of the blogs I follow and read are coming up with their internal review of the year for 2008. This gave me the idea for this post. I will give month by month update on what has happened in this blog. This year I tested two new interface for the blog and also tested Google adverts for the blog and many other unique things that I would have never learnt if I weren't blogging

January

January began with a mail from a trainee in NAL and then there was good news for AeSI community and then I wrote one informational post regarding special information for AeSI student members and informed u about 59th AM of AeSI. Wrote about GPA and a small post regarding MS in aeronautical and turbo machinery in UK and US. Then there was Bishnujee’s response to AeSI's student membership cancellation after 8 years. and I end the month with Mistakes fresh AeSI graduates do in their interview.

February
AGM news in Hindu and waiting and announcement of results were the major news in this month, followed by announcement of Tata's entry in aerospace domain. Then I also did AeSI section A results comparison. and had some problems in posting... and wrote after exams what

March
Tips on resume from satyam, and I exclaimed about no enews from AeSI and asked you all best way to search job....and discussed  two basics questions regarding resume and how to prepare for interview and also warned graduates of AeSI on how to send resume and how to edit resume in a professional way.

April

No April fool for this month as I wrote about one cardinal rule that one must remember about interview. and posted my first ever Friday links. and posted about aerospace events of the week and about a new catia training centre launch.and touched upon 3 glaring mistakes AeSI graduates do. And posted links for online GATE preparations and preparing for aerospace interview. also shared GE interview questions,solidwork video tutorials,open letter to anna university.

May
May was the busiest month. posted about catia video tutorials,tips to pass AeSI exams,do and don'ts for AMAeSI exams, DRDA SET, and announcement of AeSI exams.

Also posted 7 signs of unprofessional resume. how to fail exams, tips for getting most of revision and revisited how I cleared my workshop exam and posted the map of examination centers of AeSI along with the announcement of Berlin air show and ended with actions that will take your career ahead.

June
This was the exam month and apart from exam related stuff I posted about industry CAD usage data, and informed you about the technical interview questions after DRDO set. Apart from this tools in aerospace and highlighted a cool tool to find tutorials and other eBooks for learning catia, solidworks. Apart from CAD programs I listed some useful jobs links for AeSI graduates and gave a general structure of a cover letter and talked about will I recommend AMAeSI to my friends and family. Informed about IIT course materials on YouTube.

I also gave general advice on 6 things that you should do in your last semester.

July

This month began with an unsuccessful contest that I ran, told you about how to accelerate your job search, resume sending tips and asked you are you taking gate 2009 exams?

I answered the question I want to work in core field, told you about Olympics and aerospace connection and updated you on the farnboroug air show and DAE university's decision to cancel aerospace and aviation program. Asked you which is the best study center for AeSI and advised AeSI students on things to do before they begin a new semester as we speculated about AeSI results and criticized IIT video lecture series and ended with tips on getting training and jump starting your next semester and stated tips to get employed after graduation.

This month began with important dates for gate 2009 and then I listed catia training centers in India. And talked about various things related to AeSI, like prospects after AMAeSI, 6 reasons to do training after AeSI and listed 3 websites every AeSI students should visit.

apart from the I listed the problems with AeSI degree and had a system crash and ended with tips to apply for job requirements and remarked why IIT lectures are boon to AeSI.

September
This month began with quantity vs. quality debate and reposted
Bishnujee 's message of take pride in AeSI degree. told you about kung fu panda advice. and this month saw the launch of solidworks 2009 and I saw my worst resume ever. Told you about 3 things my mentor at NAL taught me and did a section a analysis of AeSI results, and urged students of AeSI to make syllabus book there friends. also informed you about few important changes in gate 2009 format that you should know about. and argued about having your network for AeSI graduates and students. And also posted advice from rolls royce.

October
I began this month by talking about the AeSI communities on web and reacted about the worst resume of my life. I touched subjects of NAL training and how to became consistent like Australian cricket team and asked AeSI graduates to remember certain things after they pass out of AeSI. and informed you about the chandrayaan project. I also shared study tips that I learnt from my math's teacher at GIE. and then had a long delay.

November
Most of November I was out of station and I had a long delay,and posted Pratt and Whitney single core fan. and became my shorted month of posting this year.

December
I told you about why I write this blog, about inertia, and shared 4 tips on handling exam anxiety and told you about Vijay Malaya and shared an important lesson that my boss at NAL taught me and asked you to see the biggest full moon of the year.

well this is what I did on the blog for the whole year. Do let me know if I missed on something important. I would like to thank all of you for reading what I have to say. One cardinal rule that you must remember for any interview.

I have faced so many interviews and talked to many of my collegues who have conducted interviews and this rule always shows up and the interviee follwoing this rule had the maximum chance of being recruited...


The rule is


"Always answer questions with confidence, even if you’re lying"


Interview folks love to ask tough questions to see what kind of answer you’re going to give. So give an answer with confidence. The actual answer you give, whether in front of a group or talking one on one, is much less important than how you say it. Make something up if you have to. And when people try to confuse you, saying " Are you sure" Be confident and say yes!!


Well a friend of mine is in a turbomachinery company where the top management are not very conversant with the technical topics, but still when they are interviewing someone they toss some difficult technical questions and check how the candidate handle them. So just take this advice. What ever be the question. If they doubt you on an answer, be confident and stick to your answers.


One of the most common questions I got when in NAL was, “What’s the work you did in NAL?” The truth is that in a NAL, i did so many things from programming to analysis to designing, but that answer can only get you in trouble. So one day I will say I do design and analysis and the next day I will say that I did programming. Both answers are right, but I’m much better off giving one simple answer and saying it with confidence.

Intermediate step

Not everyone lands up a job, just after graduating, It seems like we need some Intermediate step after you graduate from college (AeSI)!!!

I know very few people, in my life, who has bypassed the Intermediate step. But for majority, there is an Intermediate step just out of graduation. For me It was the training that I did In NAL.

If graduating from AeSI instilled some confidence, then the stay and work at NAL under an able leader was confidence on steroids. It boosts mine like intro does to the bikes in Need For Speed (NFS) games. It supercharged my self-confidence. A look at my resume over that period reveals how I evolved from a timid, hesitant AeSI graduate pass out to an aerospace engineer ready to take on the world. :)

The confidence didn't come from vacuume but rose from the tasks , projects and assignment i handled in NAL. So, for the graduates of AeSI who are stepping out Into the Industry, embrace all the opportunities that come your way.

From training to apprentice to other avenues of professional development, leap to opportunities and let the Intermediate period be the springboard for a greater success in life.

My first test upon enterning the aerospace industry

My journey into the aerospace industry began with the training at nal. I was assigned under dr. Ramamurty of clocter division of nal.

In nal, my first task was to write a program or otherwise calculate the overall configuration of a micro gas turbine that generated 10N of thrust.

I guess this task was a test that my mentor put me through to test my gas turbine knowledge and programming skills that were listed in the resume he had. I successfully did my task and the c basic program i built for the task is still alive somewhere in my harddisk.

So what's the point. The point is you will always be tested when you join the industry. Be it at the training stage or in the floors of corporate.

So keep yourself updated and be prepared.

5 things i need to improve in NAL now

People have begin taking me for granted. My boss began suspecting me
of not doing work. I need to do more work and less display. I need to
Carry on the good name that is there in every one's mind in nal for
us.

I have stopped learning and for the last 3 months i have not learnt
anything new which by any standard is bad. Worse if i look back at my
record at clocter.

I need to once again rise and be the best not in talks but in deeds. I
need to lift myself to a level of work i used to do here in NAL. I
need to learn and explore myself more. I don't enjoy teaching, i enjoy
the task of a magician. For a magician learning new tricks regularly
is the only way of survival, so i have to work on my new magic.... by
doing something new, by doing what i have not done before, by
spreading my wings and daring to jump.

It takes effort and will and i promise to apply these from now on

5 things that I learnt from working in NAL

NAL has a special place in my heart. it gave me the confidence after
completing AeSI, it gave me my first salary. And it provided me a boss
whose influenze has catapulted my skills!! So here are 5 things that I
learnt from working in NAL.

1. Work is never small or big. From a nut required in bolding the
casing on the gas turbine engine, every work has a part in the bigger
scheme of the project.

2. Keep your eyes open. Problems that people around you are facing are
opportunities in disguise. Solve them. Learn from them.

3. Communication is the key. Whatever be your skills, talents, if you
can't express your ideas, thoughts you are not going anywhere.

4. Keep playing. Projects come and go, task come and get done. But
never allow yourself to fall behind. Constantly see to learn. That's
the only thing that you will have direct control.

5. Be positive. Biggest frustration might be getting bogged down to
little details and getting depressed in those little details.

Tinkering

Tinkering. Tinkering is the polar opposite of the test-driven, results-oriented approach. It involves a loose process of trying things out, seeing what happens, reflecting and evaluating, and trying again.

This is where you start learning.

Learning to be an engineer only through highly structured and directed instructions of books and lectures is not enough. Tinkering is the way where real science happens.

This is my utmost take away from my experience at NAL as a trainee and then as graduate engineer. Prior to NAL, I was tinkering with c language, but NAL, provided me the opportunity to tinker with Matlab, Solidworks, and real experiments and so many things. I learned setting up combustion experiments, I tested and measured centrifugal compressor shaft speeds. I wrote a c program to instruct the gps of a real flying MAV. This is where the real stuff came out.

So the best advice to anyone studying in AeSI right now is to begin cultivating the tinkering mindset. Be open to tinker. Spend your non study hours not on facebook but on tinkering.
