Resume tips from experience

Last week in OURAeSI club, there were 3+ messages related to job requirement... I hope everyone has seen them and appropriate candidates must have forwarded their resumes by now. But I was wondering how many of them had done it in the right way? I mean what was your checklist before you shot that email carrying your resume for the requirement listed?

Please do let me know in the comments.

Although I haven't sent my resume for a year now, but a year back, when I did, I had this 4 point checklist before I sent my resume to any job requirement.

Is the resume latest?

Do I have the cover letter?

Do my resume match the requirement or needs little adjustments?

Do I know anything about the company I am applying?

Let me elaborate on these points a little bit more. Is my resume the latest is the first thing I checked. Most of the time, it never was. I had to scour my resume back from the sent folders of my email account. Or from the my documents folder where it stayed unattended. Sure it always got updated. The areas which got modified were the dates of previous work experience. I quantified my work experience as 1.5 year (meaning 1 year 6 months), that changed as I progressed month wise. So I needed to include that and give my latest experience figures!  While in NAL, the skills section also got updated to highlight the skills I have picked up since my last resume update. And same thing happened to Project listing. Sometimes skills and projects not needed in for the current requirements were trimmed and re-adjusted.

"Do I have a cover letter?" was the second thought. To this I will emphasize from experience, I know that my all resumes that went with a cover letter brought me a response!! There was not a single instance that my resume with a cover letter didn't get me a call for the interview. I think having cover letter is must.

You can't put everything on your resume and you can't use fancy colors or highlight your resume too much for the risk of looking unprofessional, here cover letter comes handy and useful. A cover letter is one place where you can highlight the specific areas that you want your recruiter to see when they look at your resume. It serves as a good introduction to your resume! So never let a resume go by without a good cover letter accompanying it!

While in NAL, i did various kind of work, some of the work came under design like design of mixed flow compressor, some came under software development where I developed VB applications to do various design calculations and other got into the category of analysis, where using analysis packages to get result was the main responsibility. So having worked on varied kind of work, I had this standard resume, where I listed all my work, major, minor, design related, analysis related and software development related and Every time I had to send a resume, I used to adjust my projects to the requirements, plucking projects and its description from this master standard project-only resume.

Sometimes one project covered and overlapped many different categories. Like I had this project "design of mixed flow centrifugal compressor impeller”; now this had design and during the project I have to develop a VB application to design the compressor. So this project encompassed 2 categories. And having a standard projects-only resume solved my problem. When I said I needed to modify my resume for the appropriate requirement, I meant pushing the project related to the requirement up in the list and including more details to it. Removing the once that were irrelevant, trimming some which do not add much value. This way the resume had the consistency and I was at peace that I haven’t missed any project.

Sometimes, if the requirement was of design nature then the design projects were pushed up and I hightled the points on this project. Even in the skills section of the resume, the skills related to design got highlighted and were emphasized.  Sometime when I knew my work experience directly matched with the requirement; then I made sure that I highlighted the project in my cover letter as well.

Knowing the company I was applying for! Be sure to know what the requirement is and then use Google to search for the company you are applying for. It’s after this that you should craft your cover letter and update your resume. Your cover letter and resume should reflect that you know about the company you are applying for and are aware of the requirements!!

A resume cannot guarantee you a job offer, but a great resume introduced with a good cover letter can help you get an interview.

I am sure you will add your tips in the comments that I might have missed. So feel free to comment!!

How to Send your Resume?

You see an job advert. You then search your email or hard disk for your resume. You modify the dates, mobile number and experience field and send the resume. Well those days when you did that are over.

No longer are the days when your generic all purpose resume can fetch you an interview call? Gone are the days when just by sending your resume, you will guarantee an interview call. Gone are the days when few scribbles in a word document with your name on it was getting you interview calls.

Everybody is sending resume and sending a resume like that takes 5 mins and that fact alone makes that the HR at the other end will get 100’s of resumes. So stop yourself and make sure your resume highlights answers to the following  questions before you hit the send button.

  • Why you are an excellent match for the job?
  • What skills you bring to the organization?
  • Your capacity for doing the work better than other candidates
  • Your ability to solve company or industry problems

If the HR doesn’t see this in your resume in the first two pages, your resume will end up in the recycle bin!!

So before sending your resume, take some time and craft a resume?

3 glaring mistakes recent graduates shouln't do during job search

I have been writing this resume tips and things related to job hunting quite a lot for past couple of weeks and my friend and former roommate who have just cleared AeSI, is the main inspiration behind all of this.

I want him to get a good job and get a head start in his career. Its been almost 2 months since he has become an engineer but i had not seen anyone of the company calling him or taking him seriously . So i wondered what might be the cause, Since interviews came through the resumes, i decided to ask him to show me his resume.

After 3 and 4 reminders and 4 weeks delay i finally saw his resume and frankly i was disappointed and hurt!!

There were many glaring mistakes and shortfalls in that resueme and the hurt came from the fact that i have written so many things before here but he never applied them in his resume...

But fortunately i saw it and made him see his mistakes.

Before i go in for his resume analysis there were some other factors that i noticed that a new fresher from AeSI should abide by.....

First thing that any fresh graduate should have is a separate account in naukri.com, monsterindia.com or other jobs site. My friend when i asked didn't have one. He just went to those sites and checked the requirement and then applied for the once he liked. Thats not the best or the optimum way. YOu need to create an online profile which can be accessed by the recruiters and then there is the feature of alerts. which is only available and relevant jobs come only when you have a good updated profile on those sites.

Secondly as i said earlier, i saw his resume only after 3 or 4 calls. He was lazy. Sending resume is not the first part, having good guidance and being proactive is the mantra for job hunting. Sitting passively just likes chickens on egg will not yield anything....

Its good to have friends and colleagues refer your resume, but that's not enough. Have a profile and search for your job yourself. Just sending your resume to some guy who came to your room and asked you to send is not enough, go to the guy's company's website, check what the requirement is and if that is not listed, check the nature of work the company does and then modify and update your resume accordingly and shoot it.

How to write a resume - learn from some sample resumes.

One of the most important task that any graduating student does is making a resume and so is true for AeSI folks. Since there is no formal guidance and placement cell in aesi, so here i present a link to some sample resumes that Boston College of US has to offer.

The PDF document is good in the sense it gives you many samples that you might modify to suit your requirements.

You can download the PDF file from this link.

As the pdf document also states, the resume samples should only be used as a starting point for visual model and general guidelines. So see them, learn from them and the make your own resume with your personal touch.

Other attractive thing about the document is that it contains some general guidelines to be followed while writing a resume. I have extracted some of them that i liked and that are applicable for aesi guys and gals.

List your qualifications in order of relevance, from most to least. Treat your resume as an advertisement for you. Be sure to thoroughly "sell" yourself by highlighting all of your strengths.

Language and computer skills are highly valued in the workplace – include them on your resume.

Proofread, proofread, and proofread. Be sure to catch all spelling errors, grammatical weaknesses, unusual punctuation, and inconsistent capitalizations. Proofread it numerous times over at least two days to allow a fresh eye to catch any hidden mistakes.

An very important point, don't just hurry this process. Wait fro at least two days and read the resume, you will find that you have missed something.

The purpose of an objective is to direct employees to your specific goals within their organization. Objectives that are vague and non-specific shouldn’t be included however effective objectives identify the position you are seeking (internship or job title) and can also include what you offer (skills, education). Change the objective for each resume you submit.

In the body of your resume, use bullets with short sentences rather than lengthy paragraphs. Resumes are read quickly; therefore make key phrases stand out.

Highlight your strengths, and what is most relevant to the potential employer. Incoming resumes are typically reviewed in 10-30 seconds, so put forth the effort and determine which bullets most strongly support your job/internship search objective.

Format variations, such as bold, italics, and capitalization, create visual appeal – use these tools but don’t go overboard.

Font size for the body of your resume should be between 10 and 12 points.

Begin your statements with action verbs. Verbs should be past tense if you are no longer at the position or participating in the activity.

Your name may be larger than the rest of your text, but don’t overdo it.

Avoid using the personal pro-noun “I” in your descriptions.

Study abroad experience is a good way to differentiate yourself from your peers. As you share your resume with prospective employers, you will want to highlight the experience that you gained while studying abroad. Many employers are looking for people who are versatile and adaptable, and by listing your study abroad experience on your resume you are demonstrating your ability to succeed in a new environment and your willingness to seek out new experiences.

Want a job write a presentable resume

Recently I got a mail from someone who wanted some assistance in
getting a job. I asked the person to sent me his resume with a
coverletter. He did it but here are the list of things that I didn't
like and felt why his resume will not go down well with the HR

1. The coverletter was just two lines and it didn't have any
information what so ever.

2. Yes you are a fresher but don't make your resume a fresher!! At
least craft a resume that looks not just out of college. Even if he
hadn't told me, from his basic all education and subject details I
would have known that he is a fresher. So keep that stuff for the
interview, mention only subjects you want to highlight.

3. Resume's main purpose is to attact an interview. This resume forgot
that. It was a plain bio of what the person has studied in his AeSI
degree. State and present your facts as if someone looking for a
designer will find a design guy on it.

4. It had a generic objective with no regard or mention of field of
interest of the person. The resume shouted that put me in any job!!

5. Another thing that this basic resume declared loudly was I am
cheap, recruit me!!

As far as I am concerned I have to modify the resume before I send it
to our HR folks, so it's still pending in my todo list waiting.... So
if you want to send a resume to someone make sure it's presentable
without any modification!!!

Is your resume shouting ' I am fresher !'

Be a freshers but don't let your resume show it!

I have seen many resumes of freshers and none had presented itself as
professional!!

Each and every resume shouts I am a fresher even before you read it.

Let the statement I am a fresher come from inside the resume but not
from the appearance of the resume.

Here are the things that I observed that need to be corrected before
you sent your fresher resume.

1. Resume is shabby. Looks like it's the first word document they have
ever edited.

2. Gramatical and spelling mistakes strewn everywhere.

3. Weak, generic objective statement.

4. Personal details are presented up front. Reception should be for
skills and projects not personal details.

5. Details of subject studied listed as if it's a bibliography of a
research paper. List your interest subjects and that too not more than
two.

6. No projects or if present they are nicly tucked somewhere near the
last page as if you are ashamed of them.

7. Skills section virtually absent.

8. Resume more than 2 page.

9. Lengthy project descriptions adding no value to the resume.

Avoid all these points to stop your resume from broadcasting ' I am
fresher' message!!

How to update your resume in an effective manner?

This post is continuation of the "update your resume series" that I am
hoping to run for this week.

Last Friday I sat with my friend updating his resume. As I saw him updating his existing CV, i noticed instead of the actual content, his focus shifted towards formatting.

Instead of wording his new experience in impeller design, he stopped twice wondering on an extra line that ms word added. He was more concerned about the font size of the new entry than on the real core issue.

As I saw this, I stopped him. Asked him to press control a and control c. Asked him to open the notepad, and press control v and do the editing in notepad.

Here in notepad he was far more productivity, suddenly his words, his language changed and he was better able to articulate his nature of work, his projects, his new work experience.

He was able to relate his skills, experience, and projects to the requirements for which he was updating the resume for.

So lesson learnt. Update your resume in notepad. Word is great at formatting. But it can distract you with all those spelling and language corrections and also with the feedback it provides continuously.

So at first take the humble notepad, write all that you need to write and once you are satisfied with the content of your resume, switch back to word and copy paste the stuff. After which concentrate on the formatting, correcting the spelling etc.

That's it folks, remember resume writing is two part exercise, the substance and formatting. Separate them and make a great resume.

The update your resume series will continue.

7 signs of an unprofessional resume

Last evening i had a chance to see resume of one of my friend who graduated recently from AeSI and i was disappointed. These are glaring mistakes that came out of the resume. The guy is an aerospace engineer now, but that resume didn't reflect that.

No wonder he was not getting any response to his resume. And from the response he got, they were offering merge salary. What was the reason, Unprofessional resume presentation!! Yes these were the 3 words that the resume shouted at me when i had a look at it.

So what were the points i noticed.

1> It was not organized and formated properly
2> Entry level resumes should be heavy on education but this one had less.
3> There was no skills section
4> Experience however small was not present
5> spelling and grammatical mistakes in resume.
6> No cover letter
7> What is there for the company?

Well i will elaborate on this points in my next post.

The worst résumé I have ever seen of an AeSI guy

Yesterday a friend of mine who is in the process of recruiting AeSI graduates for his firm received this resume.

Take a look at the resume.

Immediately he forwarded the resume to me.

It’s the worst résumé I have ever seen.

See the structure and how it is aligned. I have deliberately distorted the names and reference but look at it and you will realize how pathetic the resume writing skills are for the guy who sends it.

If this is the standard of the resume I am sure he will be struggling to get a job for a long time. Today I am shocked but I promise to dissect this resume in weeks time and make his resume more rounded and presntable.

Point wise what are blunders he did.
  • 5 pages resume.
  • His personal profile is first thing he writes
  • Objective is the last sentence of the resume
  • Language he uses in the resume is not professional.
  • No format or standards followed

I feel so sorry for this guy and bad for myself that even though I am writing on this topic so often in this blog and still there are people in AeSI who aren’t reading any of it. A little while ago someone asked me why I promote this blog on orkut and this is the answer. I don’t want AeSI guys to be so naïve. I don’t want them to be the lowest denominators…… This is bad and what good is your degree if you lack the bare minimum of sense. So guys if you are reading this refer this resource to other AeSI folks. Lets be professional enough to be able to send a resume properly.

How lengthy should your resume be?

Before i start, apologies for the delay folks, I am dealing with travel and a bad stomach ache, so posting rate has slowed down to zero.

But I am hoping to recover soon and get back on track.

By the way, day before yesterday I was updating a resume for a friend with him. As we were updating, he questioned how much details should we put in a resume.

How much should it reveal?

As you know I maintain that for resume, the first page should give a snapshot of your career and profile. The rest are just addons

A resume of 2 to 3 page is maximum, you should keep it under this limit. The tight it is the better. It's your marketing document that brings you interviews.

So don't make the runway long for the resume to travel or else the hr will drop the resume before the take off.

I will discuss more on resume length and types of resume latter this week. So stay tuned.

Before rushing your resume to the latest requirement at Goodrich or InfoTech!

Job search is serious business. Do it with care and professional way. Remember the thing that HR's are trained professionals and they have seen 1000 times more resume that you have seen, so don't try to fool them with your resume. Be honest in but at the same time present yourself in positive light.

Being honest and introducing yourself in positive light is possible. All you need is to do is shift your focus from yourself to the recruiter. See the firm's point of view and present your true facts in terms of what they require or
need.

This is easier than you think. Just sit down and before rushing your email to the latest requirement at Goodrich or InfoTech! First and foremost see what it does, what are the latest news stories about it. Research the company and the
products and services it delivers. While doing that have a feel on where
your skills and knowledge fits for them.

You might not have the total knowledge or skills they require. Don't let this stop you. Concentrate on the skill that you can deliver the next day and highlight them in the resume. For the rest of the skills that you have but you need time to hone them, resolve in your mind that the next time a company with similar requirements comes, you will exactly fit the bill.

There is no perfect job or skills set that will exactly match you. Some will be always be lacking...

And always remember a good resume will not fetch you a job, it will just fetch you an interview... the rest will be the on the interview and that my friend begins from the things you have presented in the resume.

4 Reasons Why Resume is the Best Preparation Guide.

In this blog I have always advocated making resume as your preparation guide for any job interview. Though I have already mentioned it why I think so but today I thought why not summarize the whole points here. so here we go my Top four reasons why resume is the best preparation guide.

  1. The resume is your first impression to the employer. The first thing that connects you to the employer, to the organization. You will be called for an interview based on the contents of the resume.
  2. Your first question will sprout from this very soil. What you write here will decide the question that the interviewer will ask and begin interviewing you. Its this document that will chart the path of the your interview and the alleys and nooks you will visit during your interview.
  3. The resume is structured so your preparation can go in a structured way. With a resume, when you prepare for your interview, you won’t jump here and there. Keeping the resume handy will help you see what you need to read on and what are the things you need to prepare for the interview.
  4. As resume is a document that gives an overall picture of your career and education, so keeping it open while preparing for the interview questions will help you get more focused on what to talk in the interview and how those answers relate to your overall career. Your resume helps you see the big picture while framing your answers for the interview.

well that’s it. I have just barely touched the surface , please do add in your comments.

How AeSI trainees can improve their chances of getting a job?

5 very specific things that all guys in training can do to improve
your changes of getting a job.

Update and upload your keyword rich but brief resume on a job
websites. Be brief and use specific keywords. Once the call comes send
in your full blown but optimised resume for the interview call.

Survey the job portal. See the jobs posting there and answer to
yourself honestly which is the most likely job that you can get with
your current skills in the resume. Answer this truthfully and half of
your job worries are over. Its not about what you want, it's about
what the Market has in offer for you. So decide this first!

Once you have found the job you likely fit in. Grab a book of the
topic that is the most sought after skill required by that
requirement. Start studying it one hour a day every day from that day
onward. Modifying your resume, sending your resume are tasks that you
will eventually do but first make a commitment to yourself to be
knowledgeable in the specific skill that is required.

Now optimise your resume for that specific job. Go through your
projects and skills and find connections to the job you are studying
for. If you find a project that has a connection, optimize it
otherwise nuke the project from your resume.

Same goes for skills. If it adds value to the requirement keep it or
else nuke it. Kill it. Treat your resume as telegrams. Do keep only
the stuff that is relevant and that matters.

Research the conpany and make a good unique cover letter to accompany
the resume. Highlight your skills relevant to the job.

Last of all send the resume to the firm direct. Find an email address
to send and send it direct. That's it.

If you can accomplish all these steps, you are few steps closure to
your job!!

Good luck

Resume writing guidelines – a reaction to the worst resume of my life

I have already showed you all the worst crafted resume of my life. And in that I promised that when I'll get time I'll showing the mistakes and would re design the resume.  Since I have see lot of requirements in OURAeSI so I thought it high time to update you all on that.

So in this post i will give you a general structure of the resume that one should follow. While writing this I will keep the worst resume of my life in my mind.

Personal detail should be at the end. For a resume to be effective, you need to have the first page that contents all the relevant info up front. So first page of the resume is the most important.

The first thing is give in your name. Broader than anything you have, then state your phone no. And email. And briefly in one line state your location. No need to give house number or other details. Just stating behala kolkata is enough.  That is just be brief in the address. Give a general idea about your location.

Then comes the objective. Let it be brief. One line statements. As this post told you, objective is only good if its original otherwise it looses its importance. So craft a good objective or leave it.

Then if you are new a graduate. Education should be your first highlight after the objective. Be brief and to the point in it. State the year. Avoid percentage if not asked specifically. Use first class or grading level. Address of your school college is not important so skip it just give the location. For AeSI graduates follow Bishnujee’s advice and write BE aeronautical instead of AMAeSI. Why ? AMAeSI is unfortunately little known so avoid the confusions.

Then comes the important thing. Here you should rite about any practical experience you might have. Any training you attended and stuff like that. It should be the place where the recruiter will spend the most time to see if you are fit for the job so be sure when you send out the resume update this section accordingly and shuffle the list in accordance with the requirements.

Technical skills section can either come here of just after the education. make it as a bullet list. An example presented below

  • Programming Languages : FORTRAN 77 & 90 , VB ,VBA and C
  • CAE Software package  : SOLIDWORKS , CATIA v5r10, ANSYS
  • Other Software’s          : Ms OFFICE (developer and user),MATLAB

After the project summaries list, you can include the project details where you elaborate on the projects. Here also be very brief about the projects and highlight what were your responsibilities in the project.

After this you can give in your personal profile. Be brief and don’t state unnecessary details. No one will read them unless you are going for a reality show. So keep it professional.

Well this are some of the general guideline of crafting a resume. I said I have written a lot about it here, so do check it and don’t forget to get a cover letter

Less is More - Building a resume

Let me tell you a story. Being in NAL was the best learning time I had in my working life. I learnt so much. Within the first 6 months, I had done analysis in ansys, designing in solidworks and programming in visual basic and fortran. The pace continued. I loved the work i was doing.

Then a year passed and i decided to craft a resume and send it out there. The resume i created was decent and i thought it had all the right ingredients to get me lot of interview calls.

But all i got was empty email inbox. No acknowledgement, let alone an interview call. Thinking its the fault of my resume, i tweaked and tweaked it but none got me any call.

Baffled. I analyzed why others got the call and not me even when the resume clearly matched the requirement. All this while i continue building my skills.

Then one fine day i realized my mistake. Since i had worked on so many projects, my resume was bloated. In an effort to impress the recruiter that i know so much, i crammed all my work into the resume. This list baffled the receiver of the resume. It distracted him or her and since there were so many projects, it dimmed the effect of the one that matched the profile.

Fortunately i caught this mistake early and then divided all my project and its descriptions into 3 resumes. Now i began putting only those projects in the sent resumes that were relevant to the profile. Kept the resume brief and sharp.

This did the magic and this little shift had me called for 3 interviews.

Less is more, when it comes to building your resume to get an interview call.

Thanks for the resumes and a tip if the resume doesn't fetch you an interview

Thanks everyone who has sent in your resume. If you have all three fortran, fem and structure mentioned in your resume, then it will definitely be at the HR desk.

Best of luck.

If your resume doesn't get you an interview then there are two things. Either the job requirement doesn't fit you or your resume is worthless.

Sending your resume to a requirement that doesn't match your skills is a false hope. Shun that tactic immediately.

If your skills match the requirements and still the resume doesn't fetch you an interview. Dump that resume. It's time to construct a new resume that bring results.

read more on how to construct a resume by visiting this link http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=resume&max-results=100

Send a Resume But Don't Insult.

I am sure, 15 year ago, Sam was a smart boy.

He knew that he won't get the bat he wants to buy if he just blurts out the demand when his dad, tired from work, comes home. He knew he had to be patient, observe and judge his dad's mood. He had to be obedient and make sure he is on his best behaviour before the demand is blurted out to dad.

He was smart to engage his mother and persude her to be on her side, to push for him. And he knew if he played his timing right, dad will buy the bat for him.

Now 15 years hence, where is this common sense gone? When someone informs you that there is a requirement for a graduate of avionics, you don't think and just shoot that resume sitting on the desktop without a thought.

Many a resumes go unnoticed and uncalled for just because of this unprofessional approach. What message does this convey? Technically competent guy but such utter lack of professionalism in sending resume.

If you are referred to send a resume, at least think of the person who is receiving it, to forward to his or her HR department. Can your resume can be forwarded just as you presented? Does it has the relevance to match the requirement, and the format and content to stand out?

If this were happening 5 years back, when internet was expensive and uncommon, and only resume writing advice was available in some obscure magazine article or some books, then that was a different matter. But now when the world is connected, a resume is just a google search away and you have the means to research the company you are applying for, a thoughtless resume is no longer acceptable. Its an insult.

So my advice to Sam, Please bring back your smartness. You knew how to get that bat from your dad. Apply the same common sense to get that interview call.

Here's some advice on crafting a resume or Sending a proper resume. If you are graduating in near future, please read this few articles. They will serve you well.

Resume tips from satyam

Currently there are lots of requirements in OURAeSI and recently I posted
one of the requirements in regards to my friend Mr. Md Naimuddin for his
firm! He wrote back to me to relay these suggestions to you......

"
I got lots of resume for vacancies I forwarded you.

Plz tell our guys that plz mention there total experience before they start
there project detail that too in Front page.

As soon as any body will see there resume they should know there total
experience in there first sight instead of searching it.

Many of the guys didn't mention there total experience at all.

Even if they mention, they mention in such a way that we have to search for
there experience. It should not be like that no body like to search there
total experience or like to add the year they worked for different company.

Thanks a lot to all of you guys for sending ur resume. I will try to do my

Apart from this I have 3 more suggestions for all the guys sending there
resume.

Don't send your resume without a cover letter.

Don't lie in your resume and know what you have written in your resume.

Your resume is the first thing that people will see , so be professional and
project a positive and confident look.

I have written lot of resume related and job searching related stuff at
http://www.ouraesi.org Read some of them to be prepared.

Best of luck guys and gals !

Before you send your resume

A few weeks back I blogged about a requirement for performance engineer. It generated lot of cv's and as I asked my friend who was handling those cv's.

He was disappointed. Disappointed not because there was lack of talent, but because of poor presentation and quality of the resumes.

He said out of the 40+ resume he received, he had to modify 37 of them. That's a huge number. Only 3 resumes were ready to be forwarded further without any modification or correction, the rest had flaws.

I have asked him to share his advice on what he felt was wrong. He has promised to pen it.

Meanwhile here's 2 suggestions I will make to you regarding your resumes.

Proofread or ask someone apart from yourself to go through your resume. At this stage spelling mistakes are not acceptable. If you want a professional treatment, send a professional resume.

Write your most important information in the first page of your resume. This is the place a person reading your resume should have an overall idea about your professional life. Be relevant and crisp.

Please read all the topics on resume here on this blog and at other places, because resume is a marketing document and unless you pen it right, you won't attract the right job!!

Three simple Resume oversights for a fresher to avoid

Saw a resume today. It was well formated, liked the color. Liked the
content but!!

Yes a big BUT.

It has 3 glaring mistakes or I should say simple oversights!

1. The resume was in PDF format. Cool it may be but HR always likes
things in doc format. That's the norm, that's how resumes are logged
into a computer database by the company. So sent a doc format, not PDF
unless otherwise asked!

2. If you have work experience, and are employed, then don't emphasize
your subjects in the first page of your resume. That puts you back
into fresher bucket who is just oyt of college. You love
thermodynamics, keep it to yourself. Instead promote your work
experience. Highlight your most relevant skill that you used in your
last project.

3. The length of your resume grows with your experience, so if you are
on the runway of your career, keep it short. Unless you are applying
for a post graduate degree in a foreign university, keep the resume
brief. Anything more than 2-3 page is never turned on. Aim to stick
within that limit.

And last of all, your resume is your marketing document, it's a hook
to get that interview, so make it interesting not a thesis on what you
know!!
