Group discussion is a part of interview in many organization, I personally feel that by referring some below given points we can win GD. It should be controlled by logic and arguments not by emotions. Isn't it ?

• Point—Put your point of view in front of the group. It’s not necessary that your point should be different from others’ points. But it should be on well defined assumption. Your initiate will not provide your leadership quality but your thought process and how people accept your point.
•  Logic – Explain your logic behind that point. The logic will close all options for invalidity of your point. The acceptability across the member of the group will be lesser.
• Example – Support your logic with some facts and figures. When you will support your point and logic with examples, this will be the moment when you convince most of the people in the group.

 It looks simple but it has a sound psychological background. It will help you to control the members of the team.

It should be used when you are not the initiator in the GD and have fewer points to discuss. It is used when the topic is unexpected.

• Don’t speak in the start up (for 45 seconds) and just listen to others.
• Notice all the point of views (with facts) spoken by the team members. Synthesis the information.
• Now after having point of view with facts of majority of the team members you will analysis the collected data and give it a different meaning from all team members but should support their facts. There might be more than one analysis.
• Value the analysis by prioritizing them.
• Add the suitable examples and put your argument.

Influence the people all together and make them listen to your words. This can be done by speaking facts rather then judgments. Now the next thing will be to influence the main opponents who are challengers. There are two strategic ways to do it. Either convert majority towards yourself or make him react. If four in a group of five are in your favour then you need not to worry. If the fight is when you have only 50 percent people in your favour then attack the weakest member of that group to join you or make the opponent react so as to prove him weak. Execute the above steps in a sequential way. You will win the group discussion.
 
I hope that it will help you a lot at the time of interview.

Section A June 2010 AMAeSI Results Analysis

Unlike all other exam result analysis that i have done on this blog, this time I gave myself the challenge to use just two charts to analyze the June 2010 exam results.

[This is fairly a long post and if you are not an AeSI student, you can skip the post!']

My aim was to capture all the info and insight in just two charts!

I have selected a box plot and a stacked column chart to capture the information!!

The Box Plot

Boxplot shows the spread of the marks and the stacked column chart shows the count of passing students!!

In the above diagram, it shows what is the mark spread of each subject in section A!!

As you can see strength of materials had the highest marks in all subjects followed closely by applied mathematics 1!!

The yellow triangle indicates the median of all marks students got.

If we lined up all the students who passed engineering thermodynamics in terms of the mark in ascending order and asked the one in the middle what is his marks, this is what 58 indicates for ET in the chart.

Median represents the middle of the marks!!

This plot reveals that SOM, AM1, EDD, ET, and FM are real high scoring subjects and one can aim to get 80+ marks in each of them.

And the subjects EE, WT, MSE, and IA are the low scoring subjects. They had medians below 53!! This means most of the students just barely passed!!

The length of the box represents the variations in the marks, the higher the box, the larger the spread of the marks in those subjects. As expected with high marks, ET and SOM had the highest spread of marks ranging between 50 to 65!!

It's interesting to note that the lowest maximum marks was above 65!!

This represents the frequency of marks obtained by students in each subject.

The blue colour indicates number of students who obtained marks between 50 and 60, orange represents the marks obtained between 60 and 70, orange represents the count of students who obtained marks between 70 to 80 and read represents number of students who obtained marks between 80 to 90.

As you can see, In EE, electrical engineering 90% of the students came under 60 and 10 % got between 60 t0 70!!

MSE was the subject which has close to 94% of students getting less than 60!!

SOM, FM were the two subjects in which 8 and 3 students respectively got more than 80%

SOM,ET,EDD,FM were the subjects that  some students got marks between 70 to 80.

Numbers on the bars represent the number of students falling under the band of the colour.

Sum the numbers in each band and you have the number of students passing the exam for that particular subjects.

As you can see, except for ET and then SOM, the blue band of students is highest.

You aim should be to get out of this band. You aim should be to get into the red band..

So what does this all mean!!

These plots give you hard facts, facts to arm you to set your own targets for these subjects. They give you the insight to let you decide on how to study for each subjects. These graphs reveal the trend that you can use to your advantage while studying.

4 things I learnt from debugging

4 things I learnt from the whole debugging process that my friend at the office just went through. He was into it for the last 7 days and has finally got it completed. Here I present 4 things that I learnt from all this process.

1. Don't assume. Don’t assume what the problem is, state it test it and get to the bottom of it. Don’t assume, search for facts. if you have a theory test it than say it. Do more than you think. Think and test. Not think and think.

2. First capture the big picture then delve into the details. Details are important but before going into the the details get the frame ready. see the big picture. Move back and see the whole as a problem. Set your frame right. Determine your north and south then after you have verified that you are heading the right direction then you should fine tune and get into details.

3. Keep your methods right the results will follow. Have your tools ready. Learn and set up the processes rights results will follow. Pause and setup the ground work. If your base is strong enough, things will all fall in place. So do the ground work and see that your preliminary investigation is right and the setup you have setup is based on facts not assumptions.

4. Absorb the problem first before judging or getting into  the detail. Same as the big picture. Absorb the problem than spit out your judgment. Spend time understanding the problem. Don’t state your opinions. its better to test them. Leave the judging to the judges… you just carry on small tests and experiments and draw conclusions from them.  Test everything don’t assume.

Bonus : Use bubble sort method to solve problems. From big to small. Eliminate from Big to small. More on this sometimes latter

Well this were some of things that came to mind as I saw my friend at the office finally crack the debugging nut that he was given. He was pleased and I thing many of this approach we can use to solve many of our problems.

Update on the aesi-hiding-facts thing

Well a quick update on the aesi-hiding-facts thing! I have emailed them and had got this response

Well if this is the new decision then I have to say its bad decision and this will be a step backwards for Aeronautical Society of India!

 

Since the introduction of the new syllabus, sign were indicating that Aeronautical society of India is moving in right direction, but this step of withholding the information of passed vs. appeared candidates is definitely a step towards non-transparency.

 

Every one wants a transparent organization and steps should be towards that goal and not backward. What do you feel? What should we do?

Beware of fraud institutes....

Friends It's the time of admissions, there are lots of institutes which provide coaching for associate membership examination conducted by Aeronautical Society of India. I wish to share some facts which are very necessary to read before joining any such institute because some institutes are there who play with your money, your career and the most important your time. You may feel that I'm wrong or It totally depends on students and so many things but the history advocates my point.

2. Facts

1. It's a correspondence course which contains 20 papers divided into two sections, Section-A & Section-B. 
2. Society is aware that some private institutes are providing coaching for the associate membership examination however they don't recommend any such institute. 
3. Society doesn't have any tie-up with such institutes to provide coaching.
4. If you want to get yourself registered in Aesi, so the amount for each section is 5000 rupee. (Please confirm with society : Click Here for the contact details.

3. Please think 100 times before joining any institute. Take help from seniors, social media platform, interact with the profiles who have completed their degrees. They are the actual hero who can save your money in lac and help you in designing a career track for you.

4. Don't just go on infrastructure. I agree that it also matters a lot but without a quality faculty, what will you do with the infrastructure ? Meet your faculty before joining any institute. There are institutes which might give you FREE LAPTOP or ANY SCHOLARSHIP. Even after scholarship, the fee might cost you around 1,00,000. It's just their artificial policy to attract some students. 

5. My agenda here is not to disappoint any college or institution, Even there are some institutes which are providing quality education as well as there are seniors in metro cities which are taking classes and they are perfect in some subjects. I don't want to recommend any such institute.

The Problems with AeSI degree!!!

In Orkut's AeSI's community, Mr. Nilesh has posted some valid points which I couldn't resist myself in posting here. In this points he states his view on why AMAeSI degree is not the right choice.

My views are similar and if someone will ask me point blank "If I were your brother, will you recommend this degree to me?" My answer will be no.

Don't get me wrong, I am proud of the degree, I have worked for it and have attained it and have told many times that aerospace engineers coming out of AeSI are the best Indian aerospace professionals that you will meet. Many more people have accentuated this fact, but then the way whole examination system and what Nilesh has rightly put  "Erratic question papers, puzzling evaluation and results " I don't think i can recommend my brother or cousin to face that. Sometimes it feels worse than a lottery.

Hello All,

This is not against anybody neither I want to argue with anybody here. I think new students who wish to join this course should know some facts and figures before they join this, unlike many of us who didn't knew anything at all.


Major Disadvantages


1. It is not exactly like a regular BE degree in spite is has been given "equivalent" to BE status. This creates lot of problems.


2. Though the course is not "correspondence" officially it is neither a full time regular course.


3. No strategy on examinations, how many students to be passed or about the criteria for evaluation/grace markings.


4. No set up for Jobs to students.


5. Erratic question papers, puzzling evaluation and results add to its uselessness.


6. No guarantee of how many years you will need to do this degree.


7. Even after you pass out life is a struggle for first year at least.


Now considering the Industry in India, and the job scene as well as admission scene at various engineering colleges/universities, getting job after a "regular degree" has become very easy. Many companies come on the campus and students are getting jobs in their third years.


So ,


1, If you are a good student then why do you wish to take the path which is not only difficult but uncertain where you could have a safe and successful career otherwise.


2. If you think you are not a good student, then beware, this isn't an easy course.


Two main reasons i see many people take this course are


a.) its cheap


b.) Admission is very easy.


If your main reason is above the two, rethink before you join the course.


I do not mean to discourage students who are already doing or wish to join this course, but its always good to know facts how ever bitter they are.

But a simple analysis can give you a picture of AeSI degree.

1. Campus jobs:


There are around 27 states in India, so around the 50 technical universities/institutes with hundreds of Engineering colleges in each state. Just try to find how many colleges in your city offer campus placements. See if prestigious/popular and renowned colleges offer campus placement. So in short check whether you are in majority or minority?


2. Passing it in time:


How many students clear this course in fours years every term?? Check out the stats.. during my time (batch) I know of only 1 person who did it in 4 years against around 1000 students who registered. So, does that mean all the 999 are incapable of doing AeSI?? and if so then the next question you should ask is are you in that one or 999 persons?


3. About AeSI administration:


I don't need to say anything on this. It's worst admin of all I have seen till date. Besides, try contacting few companies/seniors to know how many companies/organizations accept this course as a BE course and give jobs to AeSI people.

Anyway's, I am not here to benefit myself from anybody doing or not doing AeSI. I sincerely feel many people lack awareness and this are my two cents.

Internship Experience By An IITian.

Internships are the craze of the moment. One of my seniors said that it is always advisable to utilize each and every vacation of your college life and do something noteworthy for your CV! So I also asked my dad to liaison with his friends and ultimately I got a winter training at one of the steel plants. It was the first day of my 4 week vocational training and my dad introduced me to my mentor. After exchanging the pleasantries with my mentor, he asked me to follow him. First we were supposed to visit the STEEL MELTING SHOP.

"So, you are from which college?" he asked me while typing a reply on his smart-phone.
"IIT-KGP sir," I replied with a sense of pride.
"That’s really nice. Which branch do you belong to?" He asked, looking into my eyes with a sense of admiration.
"I belong to metallurgy department, what about you sir?" I asked him.
"I am also from metallurgy department, IIT Madras. By the way, we have reached the STEEL MELTING SHOP."

He then showed me the huge furnaces, flow of molten metal and started explaining them briefly to me. After that I asked him a few inquisitive questions . He was able to answer almost all of them and I had started to admire him for his knowledge . After that we both went to a canteen as my mentor had not taken his breakfast and wanted me to accompany him for the same. The following conversation took place after he came ordering his dosa and coffee and sat in front of me.

"The entire process is so fascinating. It must be quite some fun working out there?" I asked him, and my mentor could read the exuberance on my face.
"Yes .. the process is very fascinating. But do you know .. I never enjoyed to learn all this facts and stats which I was telling you. Aeroplanes used to enthrall me a lot in my childhood days and I had made up my mind that one day I will design and develop new aerodynamic models. However, as you know, in IIT you don’t select the branch, THE BRANCH SELECTS YOU (based on your rank). And similarly I had to settle for Metallurgy. A senior there, introduced me to the concept of department change. I used to think that maybe we have to develop a project on a topic of our desired branch and I used to spend all my time reading and collecting data about the various aerodynamic models. It gave me immense pleasure and filled me with joy when I understood how exactly planes like BOEING 747 and Fighter Jets function. By the time I came to know that branch change was related only to the “PERFORMANCE IN SUBJECTS OF FIRST SEMESTER” all my dreams were shattered. Thereafter my grades suffered terribly . Do you know why did that happen?" He asked me, stirring his coffee with a spoon.

"I am really sorry to hear that, sir. And no sir, I don’t know." I replied and was anticipating a pretty stark reality by now.

“Right from my first semester, I rarely enjoyed the courses. A few courses were interesting, but I was all the more interested in learning about the working mechanism of an aeroplane. I used to miss majority of my classes, not because of my dedication to aerospace engineering, but because I could never really make sense why a few courses were being taught to us. I thus ended up with 1 F grade in my first semester and that ended my chances of securing a branch change. I was occasionally reprimanded at home for my grades. My parents never realised that AERONAUTICS was my forte. In the subsequent years , I had to give up on all of this as I was closing on a very poor CGPA and was thus left with the inevitable task of studying hard to score an acceptable CGPA.

Study, because if you don’t, you won’t be able to able to earn your bread and butter, and in doing so I sacrificed the thing which meant so much to me and which, according to me, was the only reason of my existence in IIT. And now you see, I am here before you, stating you all the facts and data which don’t really mean much to me. It was only that “BREAD AND BUTTER” phrase which caused to me give up on my passion. Your survival is thus inextricably linked with your CGPA not with your passion in IIT. I really wish something could be done to remedy this crisis. What is your CGPA at the end of first year by the way?" He asked with me, with a dry smile on his face.

"Umm.. I think we are done with the coffee and dosa. Maybe we should go and checkout the other departments?" was my reply and we both got up to visit the other departments.

Pre-requisite to join any institute @ Embedded !!!

Many profiles have contacted me to suggest any good institute for them to learn Embedded Technology. Even though in this era, it is very difficult for me to suggest the same however I wish to share some facts which will help you for sure in choosing the right platform.

I was interacting with my friend last day about his institute, He told me that his institute is very good and they are teaching him pretty well. I asked him, "Whether he is satisfied by learning 8085 or not." He replied me that his institute has a brand value in bangalore and most of the companies recruits candidates from his institute just because of it's brand value. I told him that market no longer deals with 8085, It's the time of AVR, ARM ... even more advanced microcontroller. He replied me "Who cares ?.. if I'm getting the job by learning 8085."
C.E.O. of GVC systems also says that "8085 or other 8 bit microcontrollers are no longer basics when it comes to Real Time Circuits." Even I also do feel like this.
Henceforth I suggest you all that if you are going to join any institute to learn Embedded Technology so first try to know what modules is the team offering ? 8085 is the basis... let's say !! but how about advanced micro-controllers ? Atleast if not advanced .... then they must teach you AVR and ARM. so that you can meet the market requirement.

This post is very specific to the students who are about to complete their section-A this semester. Yeah ! I agree that It's time to enjoy after exams however make sure to utilize these 30 Days, to select the right stream.

DO what you like and LIKE what you love !

(A simple concept which helps a lot in selecting the right stream.)

Some Facts :

• There will be lots of students who will say that real aeronautics comes under "Aeromechanical" stream and all other streams are damn easy and so on ...
  (My answer : All streams deserve equal importance, Imagine a real aircraft and notice Is it possible to take off the aircraft without engine ? land without landing gears or instruments ? operation without maintenance & ground staff ?)
  It's a team work and like a chain, if one loop goes so entire chain breaks. 

• Various survey says that Maintenance & Production will be the upcoming sector and India will gain a super sonic speed in the development of Indian sky. More will be the planes, more will be the jobs in Indian Aviation market.
• Everyone needs speed and comfort. Avionics is playing a huge role in this domain, starting from "Aircraft's automatic hand wash system in washroom" to "Flight control system". Avionics always shakes hand when it comes to modernization or automation of aircraft.   

All streams are good, Just select which you like. Interact with your seniors, Use LinkedIn and try to know what exactly an Aeronautical engineer does? Check it for all streams, Find your area of interest and Rock !

Four super simple tricks to help you in your interview.

I shouldn't call them tricks, they are just techniques that anyone can apply to get the maximum out of the interview.

Talk in statements. When asked to talk about yourself and other personal questions, best way to answer is talk in statement. State the facts without any reason or pluff attached to it. think bullet points and state them as that.

For technical questions. Think satellite. Give a general answer first and then go to the specific. For the technical question, get to the basics and built your answer from there. Interviewer will appreciate the thought process even if your answers slightly off mark.

Be good. Be good at one subject that the requirements expect you to be. By good I mean really know that subject. you should be so comfortable with that subject so that you can easily converse in that subject for at least 30 mins non stop. If you cannot, you are not good at that subject.

Be interesting. This is the toughest bit but its has the maximum impact. If you have a passion for something and you have created or done something that you can demonstrate convincingly, you will be interesting.

The good thing of being or thought of interesting is, you don't need to be interesting in only a specific domain or subject. It can be anything under the earth and if you can prove it independently, you can get that interstingness factor.

The first two can be acquired in a short time and effort, but three and four takes time and consistent effort. There is no shortcut. So get started today. Earlier you begin, the better.

Embedded ????

I want to share my embedded experience with you. Friends, when I was about to join any institute to learn embedded so at that point of time "I wasn't aware about what is Embedded ?.. I've just heared by my friends that It's a software/programming language which is used in Aviation Industry. Even I have googled about Embedded but there were big-big definition." I wish to tell few facts about Embedded to the new comers.

Want a job write a presentable resume

Recently I got a mail from someone who wanted some assistance in
getting a job. I asked the person to sent me his resume with a
coverletter. He did it but here are the list of things that I didn't
like and felt why his resume will not go down well with the HR

1. The coverletter was just two lines and it didn't have any
information what so ever.

2. Yes you are a fresher but don't make your resume a fresher!! At
least craft a resume that looks not just out of college. Even if he
hadn't told me, from his basic all education and subject details I
would have known that he is a fresher. So keep that stuff for the
interview, mention only subjects you want to highlight.

3. Resume's main purpose is to attact an interview. This resume forgot
that. It was a plain bio of what the person has studied in his AeSI
degree. State and present your facts as if someone looking for a
designer will find a design guy on it.

4. It had a generic objective with no regard or mention of field of
interest of the person. The resume shouted that put me in any job!!

5. Another thing that this basic resume declared loudly was I am
cheap, recruit me!!

As far as I am concerned I have to modify the resume before I send it
to our HR folks, so it's still pending in my todo list waiting.... So
if you want to send a resume to someone make sure it's presentable
without any modification!!!

TATA Nano can Help You in Your Studies!

The subjects and topics that I remember the most have one thing is very common. All those topics are related with something I have seen, something that has happened to me. My propulsion –III rockets concepts became lively when we visited SARC.

All those topics are still fresh in my mind as then, so when the long-awaited launch of Tata's Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) Nano is around the corner, a thought popped. Utilize this real life example to learn and entrench all those terms in your mind. Studying this way is much more fun and you are more likely to remember this facts than just reading them without this context.

Dig dip. Dig dense. That's the only way to study. Studying for only exams is not the way..... study to be a good engineer, study to understand, study to get the facts. This is how things will be easy when you get into the industry. So remember this when you studying your subjects.

Best way for me was when I took pen and paper. I remember those topics very clearly which I studied with pen and paper. And there was another topics that I remember very clearly and those were the one which I had discussion with my friends.

So study with pen and paper, jot down what you read, make diagrams, visual maps and freely discuss what you are learning with your friends, state what you have understood and how the topic you learnt applies to your and our life. This simple exercises will cement the topic in your mind, bond it in your knowledge, so give it a try!

Today I read a very nice article in a local newspaper and I'm sure it's going to help us henceforth I'm sharing the conclusion of it here...

There are two ways to get a job

1. Make a very impressive resume in order to ensure that you receive an interview call.
2. Develop skills & apply

Second option sounds difficult but it helps a lot in the long run. I do agree that degree matters a lot however most of the companies give importance to talent.

Here I would like to relate the above said facts with AeSI's life....

I've seen many students in frustration & tension because of having marks less than 60%. I know that 60% matters a lot however it doesn't mean that if you have marks below 60% so you can't do anything in your life. Where there's a will, there's a way and taking tension about marks can never solve your problems.

Let's try the second approach this time

1. Develop skills e.g. software related to your industry.
2. Join Social Networks like LinkedIn.
3. Join groups related to the technology in which you are interested.
4. Be silent and just observe, what people are talking in such groups? What are the real time problems? And what are the solutions?
5. Learn new things every day because every day is a new day in life.
6. Once you feel that you're good in technology, start to post comments, take part in group conversation.

Benefit: There might be few recruiting managers who can recruit you or there might be any technical manager or project leader who can refer you in their companies. Trust me this approach is very effective.

Job search is serious business. Do it with care and professional way. Remember the thing that HR's are trained professionals and they have seen 1000 times more resume that you have seen, so don't try to fool them with your resume. Be honest in but at the same time present yourself in positive light.

Being honest and introducing yourself in positive light is possible. All you need is to do is shift your focus from yourself to the recruiter. See the firm's point of view and present your true facts in terms of what they require or
need.

This is easier than you think. Just sit down and before rushing your email to the latest requirement at Goodrich or InfoTech! First and foremost see what it does, what are the latest news stories about it. Research the company and the
products and services it delivers. While doing that have a feel on where
your skills and knowledge fits for them.

You might not have the total knowledge or skills they require. Don't let this stop you. Concentrate on the skill that you can deliver the next day and highlight them in the resume. For the rest of the skills that you have but you need time to hone them, resolve in your mind that the next time a company with similar requirements comes, you will exactly fit the bill.

There is no perfect job or skills set that will exactly match you. Some will be always be lacking...

And always remember a good resume will not fetch you a job, it will just fetch you an interview... the rest will be the on the interview and that my friend begins from the things you have presented in the resume.

topic exciting by using a timer and forcing to read the whole chapter
in a specific number of minutes.

If your mobile has recording facitily record the facts of the things
you studied and listen to them when you are in a bus or away from
studying.

ever you read a new topic, make quick question for it in your mobile
notes and use them to review what you study when you have nothing else
to do. Like waiting for your girlfriend at the bus stop or waiting for

Type of questions asked in GATE and why knowing them will help you?

 

GATE is all about concepts and its application. All about getting to the basics!! And another advice that surfaces if one looks for studying for gate is do lots of questions.

Why?  Why do lot of questions?

well let me answer,this is just my wild idea, I would like to love to hear what’s your take on this in comments?

Why people say previous year question helps. one main reason that previous years question is that they make you aware of the type of questions that come. So effectively. this exercise of taking questions means you train your mind to find the type of questions that come in the gate exams.

So why not analyze the type of questions that you get in GATE. What will be the benefit.? Well for one your mind will know the type of questions and when you study for the GATE 2009 exams, your mind will subconsciously or consciously try to retain the information and match the patter that you are studying to possible questions that might come in GATE

so here are the types of questions that are asked in GATE

(i) Recall:

These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation

(ii) Comprehension:

These questions will test the candidate?s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.

(iii) Application:

In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.
 

(iv) Analysis and Synthesis:

These can be linked questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in order to answer its successor. Or these can be common data questions, in which two questions share the same data but can be solved independently of one another.

So these are the four type of questions that you will face in gate. Once you know them, you are better prepared to study for it.
