Experiments and tutorials
One involves reading everything about the subject and beinging to do the tutorials and the other approach is getting a basic idea and jump into an experiments.
As you might have realised i follow and vote for the experiment approach. It works for me. Without settling down on theories. I get the basics of what can get me started and jump into the tool to conduct my own experiments.
With the new fem software that i was introduced, i got so many supporting documents. If i had read them line by line and everything, not only would i have made the progress that i have made so far but also would have stuck somewhere because of the jargon. So mine technique was read or browse quickly. Get the basic idea of the steps involved and then begin your own experiments.
For the fem software, i began by modelling a 2d plate, meshning it, applying force and getting the cool coloured contour profile. Learning and experimenting with one feature at a time.
So if you find yourself not making progress in your own tool learning, then try experiments. The cool thing about experiments is they always teach you. Even if they fail, they give you insight of the process. So experiment!

What experiments will you put on Chandrayaan 2?
ISRO said that it would undertake "extremely good" experiments and try out new technologies. (via Hindustan times)
Weight limitation is overall boundary within which we have to work", Prof U R Rao, who chaired the national committee of experts drawn from ISRO centres, academic institutions and R&D laboratories which finalised the payloads to be flown on board Chandrayaan-2 (orbiter and rover), told PTI.
Well as ISRO deliberate their "extremely good" experiments, I ask you, the would be aerospace engineers of India, to fire up your imagination engine and tell us what experiments will you put on Chandrayaan 2?

Tinkering
This is where you start learning.
Learning to be an engineer only through highly structured and directed instructions of books and lectures is not enough. Tinkering is the way where real science happens.
This is my utmost take away from my experience at NAL as a trainee and then as graduate engineer. Prior to NAL, I was tinkering with c language, but NAL, provided me the opportunity to tinker with Matlab, Solidworks, and real experiments and so many things. I learned setting up combustion experiments, I tested and measured centrifugal compressor shaft speeds. I wrote a c program to instruct the gps of a real flying MAV. This is where the real stuff came out.
So the best advice to anyone studying in AeSI right now is to begin cultivating the tinkering mindset. Be open to tinker. Spend your non study hours not on facebook but on tinkering.

Future Requirements of Aerospace Engineering Business
- As per one of the Boeing
report, first century of composites is between 1940-2040, in that 75 years
have been passed and more research and developments have been carried out
from aerospace industry. As a result of this both Airbus and Boeing are
able to design and build the aircrafts with 50 plus percentage of
composites. The aerospace industry has seen huge benefit from the use of
composites which reduced the weight, CO2 emission and certain extent noise
level. The use of composites will also bring a more pleasant environment
for passengers as it will allow considerate increase in cabin humidity.

interfaces, are some of those signs. These issues are being analyzed and
continue being a challenge. Knowing about that, Embraer has been investing
in trainings and incentives the development.

trend and requirements engineering services companies need to do more with
‘engineering’ than ‘services’ alone. This also indicates that, in future,
services type job opportunities are coming down and it will surely affect
the growth of some companies who does not understand the value of
engineering.

at senior level. To meet future requirements the companies need to improve
their technical strength otherwise, today’s their decision might become
expensive for such companies as the dimension of the business changing.
- With current gained experience

come again. Since the future requirements are different, different
approach need to be adopted. Otherwise, this increases unemployment rate.
- In last two decades Indian
aerospace industry has not able to create and develop 10 designated chief
engineers but, managed to create few hundred PMP holders.
- More qualified graduates (PhD’s
and Master graduates) need to spend their time in providing solutions to
technical problems, innovation and competency development areas. In one of
interview Airbus senior vice president said future lies in new competency,
technology and innovation.
- In India
universities/institutes are producing more BE/M Tech qualified graduates
than the requirement but industries need to make them as good engineers.

Being perfect and avoid getting stuck
learning a cad or cae software, remember this. It will save you from
loads of frustration that comes knowing you are stuck.
Getting stuck in search of getting something perfect is stupid,
instead try experiments, keep moving your mouse and try out all the
thoughts you are getting. This is the best utiliization of time when
you are sitting infront of a software. Thinking and only thinking is
just a visicious vortex that will keep you imobile for a long time.
At best try to avoid it and if you stuck in the vortex of non
activity, the best way to come out of it is to begin working. Just
model anything that you see infront of you! Just begining breaks the
ice and continue with the ice breaker for sometime willingly. This
activates the faculty of mind that is again back at charge.
So try this two techniques, when you see yourself going into a slump.
Whatever cad or cae software you work on, avoiding the perfection trap
and just begining are the two things that will take you far.

4 things I learnt from debugging
4 things I learnt from the whole debugging process that my friend at the office just went through. He was into it for the last 7 days and has finally got it completed. Here I present 4 things that I learnt from all this process.
1. Don't assume. Don’t assume what the problem is, state it test it and get to the bottom of it. Don’t assume, search for facts. if you have a theory test it than say it. Do more than you think. Think and test. Not think and think.
2. First capture the big picture then delve into the details. Details are important but before going into the the details get the frame ready. see the big picture. Move back and see the whole as a problem. Set your frame right. Determine your north and south then after you have verified that you are heading the right direction then you should fine tune and get into details.
3. Keep your methods right the results will follow. Have your tools ready. Learn and set up the processes rights results will follow. Pause and setup the ground work. If your base is strong enough, things will all fall in place. So do the ground work and see that your preliminary investigation is right and the setup you have setup is based on facts not assumptions.
4. Absorb the problem first before judging or getting into the detail. Same as the big picture. Absorb the problem than spit out your judgment. Spend time understanding the problem. Don’t state your opinions. its better to test them. Leave the judging to the judges… you just carry on small tests and experiments and draw conclusions from them. Test everything don’t assume.
Bonus : Use bubble sort method to solve problems. From big to small. Eliminate from Big to small. More on this sometimes latter
Well this were some of things that came to mind as I saw my friend at the office finally crack the debugging nut that he was given. He was pleased and I thing many of this approach we can use to solve many of our problems.

Why learning stagnates and how to mitigate it?
states that in everything we do or learn, 40% is the actual labour,
30% is experience and skills and the last 30% is risk.
If we combine all this 3, we can be masters of the craft. We can
acheive results which are beyond our self imposed limits!
Most of the time, we fullfill the first 2 slots but never take the risk.
We search for tutorials of catia/nastran and practise all of them
religiously. But never do we cross the boundary of that tutorial.
We fail to mix different lessons. We miss to go beyond what they
teach. We follow but do not push beyond what is taught.
This is why learning stagnates after a while. Tutorials are there to
start you on one path, it's upto you to take the lead and explore
beyond the tutorials terrain.
So the point here is, in everything you do, learn or experience make
it a point to cover the last 30%! Take risks, try new approaches, new
methods, new experiments!! This is where the seeds of mastery are
hidden!!

Things i learnt today
Saw the basics of MATLab and with Fortran i learnt about taking
in data from texts files and then making them reading them from
the file and making the program runI am working on a simple turbojet
program which i have to read and decipher and then modify for
sir's use.
We are really interested in a small range and i will make the programs here.

well yesterday was my day with my guide scientist. I
encountered a problem in fortran and i was not able to pin point
the problem in the code, so had to call sir and after a long
debugging process, we finally understood the result.
I liked the session as i saw how sir's mind was working. As i saw
myself jumping to conclusions, he remained on the program and began
analizing the program from the beginning
and bit by bit, patiently he solved the program. So learnt the
lesson of going to the root of the problem.
For today, i plan to read matlab simulink and check if c program
works in this fortran program. Sir will be absent today so i want
to learn and try as much MATLAB as i can. I also intend to modify
this fortran program to give me the output as i want it!!!

What i did today?
This is the first day when my guide scientist is not in clocter
for the whole day and i have this control room (as it is called) all
to myself.
They say you reveal yourself when you are alone, or when you
know you are not being watched? So i learnt one thing about
myself, that i am a computer fan and addict as i read about fuzzy
logic, how to use it, didi a small basic simulik model and read
and showed kishore MATLAb's capabilites.
I have a deep interest in FL and AI and i want to pursue it further
and would like to engage in a field that entwines aerospace and
software and FL AN and AI.
FL and AI will be of great use for autonomous vehicles, probes and scientific
experiments and i want to be a part of this when it happens here in India!!

Well today i have learnt two things one use the units and when
you have done a thing do it properly and if there is a fault in
your calculations ,find it before proceeding.
I went to my G Sc without that and had to get a secret some advice
and he asked me to be careful. Well that's what i learnt today.
Another thing that i felt was how clearly sir, stirred me from one
stage to another. And now the whole picture that he has painted for
me is coming in focus. Though lot of fuzz is still there but i am in
the project of MGT.

How do i describe today. I did a lot of calculation but my boss is
busy today and so he has not even looked at my data and has
dismissed me. Well lets see, maybe this will make me learn more. I
will learn more about the topic i am in.
sometimes this feels like not contributing anything to him. I want
to be a real help to him and want real work and this i know is his
test work by which he is testing me.
Well someone said that you must always go the extra mile. Am i
going with my boss. No i guess not, but i am trying and i will surely
get the reward.
I will learn more and more about the topics i have to read and i will
make sure that i know what i am needed to to do the next day.
One strategy to cope with sir is to know fully and to know what is
going to come next and this comes by observation and questioning. Be
vigilant

WELL TODAY WAS NOT BAD. i DID SOME CALCULATIONS AND NOTHING MUCH.
My BOSS DIDN'T COME
MUCH, THOUGH I WOULD LIKE HIM TO COME MORE OFTEN.
yesterday was also same, only thing was that he had a presentation and
so he took some randomly calculated values to the committee. Maybe
those were a small part in his over all presentation.
Kishore attended the brain storming session and he was excited about
it. My boss didn't take me. But his boss took him as the projector.
Well next time i will ask my boss to take me too. Lets see what they
are talking there. Anyway learning something here has too options. on
you have to come prepared that you will do this and that thing, then
only can you prepare and get the maximum out of the stay here. I
plan to learn matlab and fortran and autocad by this month.
I will learn the BASICs of this softwares and drive this knowledge to
the level seekd by the companies.
How can one improve the environment of clocter. well this is not
the .... sir is coming

Well today is bore, i have no work and my boss is busy so here i am
whiling my time.
Although i took this opportunity to make a make that graphs of
passing percentage and the task i take up twice in months years
time.
I have finished some of it and conclusions are remaining and those
will be there in the at home. I will take this file and will upload
it back to my site and in gmail. Another thing is that i need to
look a more methodical approach.
By methodical i mean, to make a template and in which i just need to
add the values to get that percentages and reports.
Well what was the most surprising fact that i have learnt from this
analysis, it was that section a in DEC 2004 had the lowest passing
percentage. In propulsion stream, sir came so had to stop.

Precision industry
Well well have neglegted you. no NOT MUCH ITS ONLY THAT I DON'T
HAVE ACCESS DIRECT ACCESS TO NET in NAL and so i am not able to post
what i write there.
Well will carry a floppy now and save them there and then upload this
when i get time. hope that will do and i will keep only one page
for writing my experinces.
3 things i have learnt till now are....
1. NAL is the premier lab mainly because it is and outsourcing lab
where every aero firm of india outsouces hits projects and
experiments. So its always on the hard push and that makes it produce
results.
2. In NAL there are lots of good people but only thing is that
the number of unworthy people is more than the worthy one. Some of
them are even not concerned .
3. Greatest lesson that i learnt is that don't compromise on
results. You ae in a precesion industry and so there is no room for
error and you minimize or better eliminate that
I thing the last thing is most important and i am trying to do this
by practicing to be precise and to make less and less mistakes untill
i make no mistakes at all..
Well got to go now, my next post will be probably on the finds of
what happened in the june 05 results!!!

Everything else is just noise
Read this beautiful quote and immediately loved it. Be worried and
concerned about your studies when you are in aesi. Read study and
write; that's what I want to tell you. Everything else is just noise.
Noise!!!
Learning a software, training, experiments with practical are all none
if you don't pass papers. Its no big deal if you are stuck in clearing
the papers. And for that you have to read, write and study.
Study hard and play. Don't worry about the distractions. Keep your
focus on passing AeSI with good marks and every thing else will follow.
So focus.

7 things to take note while learning an analysis program
working on a in house fem software. So I thought let me enumerate some
points I noted while dealing with these analysis softwares.
1. Understand and be comfortable with the fact that GUI is not
important.
Most of the GUIof analysis programs suck.
And it doesn't matter because in the long run, the solver is the one
where most of the analysis results should come from.
2. Everything can run though batch.
As I said GUI is just an addin, for efficiency and automation,
knowing how to run the softwares to run in batch is important. This is
where you should spend your maximum time while learning. Learn how to
complete an analysis with ASCII text files.
3. Understanding the underlying principles is more important than the
technique.
How to create model, appling boundary are crutial but knowing why
those boundary conditions are needed is more important. Knowing which
element to use is more important that how to add elements.
4. Use small models.
Big complex model look sexy. Working with them provide a sense of
accomtplishment, but if you want to truly learn the priciples of
underlying theory and application then use small models. They are easy
to modify, easy to solve and most importantly easy to try out
different combinations. Basics come not from analying a big 3 million
nodes landing gear model but playing and tinkering with small cube.
5. Experiment with the core functionality of the software not the
models. As I said earlier, models are just models. You are learning
analysis here, so keep learning that, models are just a way to learn
the different features.
6. Keep the end goal in mind.
Don't forget you are learning to do analysis. It's about designing
products. You are learning it to design safe, reliable designs. So
learn with that thing in mind. Also remember automation, the better
you are with it, the more efficient analyst you will become.
7. Verify all your results.
It's a software. Your job is not just to setup experiments, and
present the results. An analyst job begins after the run. It's the
interpretation of the results that matter. Verifying what you got
after the run is what you should teach yourself.
These were some of the things I remember and will suggest to anyone
learning analysis softwares like ansys, nastran , ls dyna etc.

Suggestions for AeSI improvement - highlights of aesi's enews
Ok ok I know that PDF didn't get published. As i post most of my entries via email. That PDF didn't go through the blogger platform and you weren't able to see the document. So here's the link for the 2 specific articles that I wanted to point your attention.

The articles are from Air Cmde Raghubir Singh (Retd) FAeSI- 732 and Dr G Madhavan Nair President Aeronautical Society of
Both of them deal with the improvement of aesi for the betterment of the students!
The articles assumed significance because of the fact that while in the AGM in cochin Air Cmde Raghubir Singh gave a presentation which has really awaken other members on the plight of the students and everyone there did talked about improving it for the students. And there were questions raised towards Mr. Bhaita to answer. If you were there you could have seen how uncomfortable Mr bhaita became while answering.
So this articles getting published in enews is one step showing that people are listening and they haven't forgotten about us. So friends, this AGM lets us prepare our case strong and give a presentation telling the story from our (the student) side.
I know many of you might be thinking that this is bullshit and this will never work out, but let me tell you, if it doesn't work out its because of you people who betray us. It’s because of you, who can't stand by your fellow aesians! So if you can't contribute positively and can't stand with us, I say you have no right to have a negative opinion about it!
Anyway here's the highlight of articles
- The question papers should be set from the syllabus-taking into account the depth possible based on the coverage.
- The syllabus while remaining on the elite IIT pattern should also take into account all India university syllabi –without diluting the our standards..
- Practical training, experiments & testing should form part of AMAeSI syllabus. Perhaps 50% marks can be catered for these.
- Project work, seminars & internal assessment under the accredited guides can be included
- Further rationalization of question paper setting so that good student can pass the examinations. Still out of syllabus questions continue to be set in our examinations.
- The question papers should be such that it tests the students for knowledge as per the syllabus & not the lack of it by post- graduate level questions
- It should be borne in mind that the students opting for AMAeSI, are either in service or students mostly in the 50-65% PCM marks bracket at 10+2 level. Without lowering our standards, the question papers must be such that these can be answered & does not result in dismal pass percentage
- The question paper setting, answer book checking & moderation should be in rotation at the institutions or by the Fellows of the AeSI.
- Model answers by the paper setters & marking system should available.
- It would be quite advantageous if subjects having greater coverage & depth are spread over a longer periods for better comprehension. For example subjects like Applied Maths-I, Introduction to Aeronautics can be telescoped over at least one year period.

What can we learn from my collegue at work?
doing uninspiring work? He is not learning anything new!
I don't know about him but I see an opportunity there. I see time that
he can utilize to learn whatever he wants to but all he does the same
repeatative job at the same slow pace.
He is using excel and is doing the same kind of work for a year now
but he is poor in excel, by now he would have been fluent in that tool
but since excel is everywhere he disregards it. Shuns it. Hates it.
He is ignorant of simple if formula and of simple techniques of excel.
If this is attitude he approaches his work he will remain in the same
rut till he quits.
Its not what you do that will teach you but how you do something?
Opportunities don't come to ideal work, it springs from the laps of
challenging work.
So this is what I suggested him.
1. Automate your repeatative work.
2. Do the work at a faster pace.
3. Utilize the remaining time doing small experiments in excel.
4. Read more about the tool you are using.
5. Aim to be an expert in it.
6. No tool is unimportant.
7. Your value is not it the number of tools you know but in the things
you can do with the tools you know.
I wish I could do some more for him. But I know he is the one who has
to walk. All we, as external person, can do is point him the right way.

Three steps to sucessful career
me wonder on the question of what are steps for a successful career.
Well here's my answer?
Communication skills.
Technical skills aside, single most important skill that one should
have, acquire or cultivate is communication skills. This is the one
skill that will enable you to progress in your career. Technical
skills gives you authority but it's the communication skills that
spread the infuence and this is first skill that you must develop
before you move on to any another.
Curiosity and experiment.
Being curious, being open to experimenting. Testing your theory is the
next skill that you should cultivate. Being good at technical skill
and just knowing it bare minimum won't be enough. Be curious, ask
questions. Answer them with experiments. It's more than a skill but an
attitude that you need to cultivate!
Solve problems.
What good is an atiitude or skill if you aren't solving problems.
Solve problems, yours or of peoples around you. This is the only and
THE only way to accelerate your skills. Problems are the grindstones
of honing your skills, technical or otherwise. So look from problems,
annoyance, in and around yourself and solve them.
As I said, these are my 3 steps to a successful career. What's yours?

Resumes and cover letters
Job hunting has now become the first priority in my life now a days, so please don't mind if i devote my most of my posts here on this ventures! Well my last interview was long back, since then none of my resume has fetched me any interview call. I've been lucky with my resume and cover letter as almost all that i've dispatched from my mail had had an response. None i guess landed up in someone's trash folder. But still there are flaws i guess, that's why i'm posting this entry still as a trainee engineer of nal. Anyways first and foremost thing i have learnt by sending resumes is that a good cover letter is must. Have seen lots of people just sending there resume with just a line "please find resume attached " as cover letter, pleas don't do that. Show your interest in the job you are applying, highlight the most important aspect of your resume in it and most importantly remember cover letters are your means to let the recruiter notice your resume that will eventually grant an interview call.!
