15 Tips for EXAM PREPARATION by Mr Rahul Verma

 All of you are preparing for your exams and most of you are left with three or less papers in sec b, so this may be your last semester of AeSI exams. Next sem most of you will complete your degree.

I know these are the most tensed moments for a society student when he has last semester to complete section B. Question keeps roaming in mind “will I be able to clear the degree this time or not?” What if any of one paper is left? “Again I will have to waste one more sem”

Most of the students start losing their confidence due to peer pressure. And even they are good in knowledge and worked hard full of sem, they fail in one or more papers.

I want to ask WHY TO LOSE THE BATTLE JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR LOW CONFIDENCE??

Try to keep grip on your confidence, I’d tell you few thing that I did and helped me in my last sem of sec B.I will be very happy if it may help you:

1) Just keep in mind: jo bhi karna hai, jitna bhi tension lena hai, bas es sem hi lena hai...etni mehnat krni h ki next sem exam na likhna pade.

2) Plan breaks during your studies, use your most of the time for your preparation by avoiding tiredness.

3) It will be excellent if every day you can write test on previously asked question papers, if yes then do it for all the three subjects every day and mark your mistakes. If you do it for ten days continuously just before your exams then you will get solid confidence and good chances for clearing the papers.

4) Plan your syllabus and write chapter-wise tests on theory and numerical portion for each chapter. Do it in such a way so that most of the things/things where you are weak will get covered in your test.

5) Collect the things on one separate note that you need to revise frequently. List out all the formulas equations and important diagrams use minimum words and use symbols and drawing pictures to minimize the words. It will help you to revise faster.

6) For example if you usually forget the formula to be used in exam then write one test on the formulas only, it may look foolish but later after exam you will find how useful it was.

7) Complete your revision few days before the exams anyhow and plan for writing the test and correction self.

8) Divide your day in to two halves, in one prepare the questions and revise the theory and in second half write the test on the chapter/s you decided earlier.

9) It will boost your self confidence and you will be able to identify where usually you do mistakes in exam.

10) Just circle your mistakes with red pen and write the correction in front of them.

11) In case if you have two or more exams continuously then mix the questions from all those subjects in your question paper and write a detailed test. It will be proved very helpful in exam if you could do this.

12) Now before your exams you need not to revise full syllabus, you can revise most of the things by reviewing your test papers itself.

13) Post the formulas short notes in your room wall, bathroom, and toilet or in kitchen so that you can utilize your time most wisely and efficiently.

14) Keep your weekly and daily plan right in front of you where you sit to study. Write those things on board that you need to do later to avoid missing them.

AeSI June 2014 result-out

Dear Friends,

First I would like to congratulate to everyone who had completed degree or passed paper and in case you had not passed exam as per your expectation than please don't get disappointed because a better future as well as a better result is waiting for you but for the time being get relaxed ,analyse what went wrong,what you can go to avoid it. 

Once you clear AeSI you will feel that the you have won a very big battle of your life and I must say as you had not left AeSI and you were determinate through your journey of AeSI and strived ,challenged ,pushed your limits so in future you will never ever give up in any condition .I must say that AeSI gives the training at-least it did for me.

Joy of clearing one paper was more than clearing GATE for me and I am sure that completing M.Tech from IIT kharagpur will not give me as pleasure I had got when I completed AeSI.

Yes ,its indeed true...

I had seen many students in AeSI who drop the subject once they failed in it and excuse they make is ,YAAR BAAR BAAR EK HI EK CHIJ PADHAKE PAK GAYA HU (i am bored by reading same and same things) but the fact is that they are escaping from that subject .

In my case whenever i had anysubject back i took it as a challenge and prepare in such a way that however hard the exam paper may come, i should not get less than 50 .at this time you have all ready basic concept of the subject .you just have to make it strong and on that u can easily can make the strong building so u can score in that subject .

In case suppose you had dropped that subject than u have to clear it at the end of ur section A or B .By the time you allready had forgotten your concepts so u need to study them again and grasp it.

My many of friends had written single paper for almost 4 to 8 times and they are now doing well and pursuing their masters from NITs/IITs.

You too can do it but don't escape from papers and face them.

How can I do my best on the exam?

A lot of people have asked me this and the following passage is the best answer to that question.


"How can I ace my exam?" If you're a student, you are naturally concerned with how you perform on examinations. But, ironically, focusing on the impending test itself is not the best way to improve your performance on it.


Suppose in a few months you were going to be asked to do thirty push-ups. You could concentrate on what to eat the day before the push-up competition, and what shirt to wear that's not too tight or too loose, and how to give 110% at the time of the challenge. Or you could slowly, over time, increase the number of push-ups you can do each day between now and then so that it would be no effort to pump out thirty push-ups at test time.

"How can I do my best on the exam?" is not the best question to ask in school. Better questions include these:

"How can I become more engaged in the course material? "How can I become more engaged in the course material?"
"Could I give a lecture explaining the material?"

These questions lead to actions that you can take—becoming an active listener, joining a study group, or, even better, tutoring other

It has been decided to grant extension of one year (two exam sessions) i.e. December 2012 and June 2013 exam sessions to such student members who have passed five or more subjects of  section 'a' up to June,2012 exam session.

The student members desirous of availing the extension must apply in writing immediately latest by 10th October, 2012 along with an undertaking that they will not ask for any further extension after June 2013 exam session.

1. If modules like DO178B, V&V, LDRA etc are so important to work in Avionics stream then why the hell society still have 8051, Basic Language and all in it's MODIFIED syllabus. 8051 is no longer basic now. Why you people of AeSI Alumni Association don't do anything in this subject ?

2. I've read Himalya Bhaiya's post about a cost effective recruitment process at LinkedIn.. Why you people don't do anything to make it possible ?

3. I went to "Cranes & Software House" in Bangalore.. They told me that it's a 6-8 months course. Does it suit the personality of Aeronautical Engineer to sit jobless for another 6-8 months after degree ? Don't say that do it in last semester. as you must be aware that doing software and giving paper of aesi is a big game. society's paper are not like state board exam.

First of all. AeSIAA members are graduates of AeSI who have teamed up to form a formal association for the betterment of students and graduates of AeSI. We provide a platform. Since each voluntary member of AeSIAA is graduate, we dont remember or seek problem to solve. But if there's a request or issue, we help you to place it before AeSI. So if you have a query, formally write an email to AeSIAA and it will be taken forward. 

2. Recruitment. Each and everyone if us is trying to do a bit of wherever he or she can. But before we can confidently put AeSI graduates forward we have to make sure that the graduates are prepared. So in this vein, AeSIAA is taking steps to build confidence and teach presenting skills though workshops. and seminars This is the most basic need which will lead to better results than pushing an unprepared AeSI graduate to hr.

3. Don't tell me how big a game AeSI study is. But if you need job and that too just getting out of AeSI, start building skills. The knowledge you get in AeSI is just the mass but the skills you build are the acceleration that you have to have to generate any force or thrust. Remember F = m.a ! Unless you have both, job immediately after graduation will be tough. So start cultivating skills along side studying for AeSI.

Strategy to clear Principle of Flight exam.

I'm noticing frequent messages/posts from students & teachers seeking advise regarding strategy to clear/teach Principle of Flight. Candidates are worrying a lot because AeSI surprised everyone by last year's question paper. Isn't it ?

I remember my old days when my grand father used to narrate stories of Ali Baba & Shek Chilli to me. Even though I don't remember the stories which I read in my book but I remember each & every story shared by my grand father.
I do understand that being a student, reading the history of flight will make you sleep but I'm confident that if any teacher will narrate it like a grand father so you'll remember at least 60% of it in the examination hall.

1) Say your teachers to be grand father and narrate the history of flight as a story to you once in a week.
(I'm sure it'll help you to answer unexpected questions.)
2) Principle of flight is a subject where the way you answer does matter a lot.
- Make diagram in every reasoning.
- Don't forget naming each part of the diagram.
- To the point answer will help you in getting more marks.
- Rather than answering continuously in a paragraph, make points and answer accordingly.
- Use flow charts, graphs and other methods to answer in a better way.
3) Collect all modified syllabus question papers of Principle of Flight, Write all reasoning in a separate note book. & Practice it as many times as possible. Don't practice it orally, Try to write and check it yourself.
4) Truss : It is very important & simple as well. Devote a week for this topic & practice as many questions as possible. It is a part of the paper where you may get full marks.
5) Give examples in support of your answer.
6) Many students follow tradition of not preparing for "Aircraft Systems". But the reality is that it is the most easiest unit of this paper. Use your available resources & have a better command on Aircraft Systems as well.
7) Follow the above 6 points without failure.

Besides it don't forget to check "Key to clear AeSI".

5 steps to master something

It's just after exam time and a perfect time to add some new skills. It maybe learning a new programming language, an analysis tool like Ansys or just plain painting.

Here are 5 steps that I have always found useful in getting those new skills. Give them a try and be sure to add your comments if you do something interesting.


Pick techniques
Mastering something is knowing the little techniques and getting natural with them. When you begin a new language or tool, aim to master techniques. Master the simple first and the complex one will automatically follow.


Don't hop around
Learning a new language, tool etc is all about putting in the time. Going on after the initial burst of energy has dimmed. Keep the patience and keep doing the task and learning tiny bits one at a time.


Don't be a multitasker
Let your laptop, smartphone be the multi tasker. We humans are linear and single tasking is the best that we do. So avoid multitasking. Learn one thing and learn it well.


Keep things separate
Just like you don't mix eating with sleeping. Don't mix learning with more learning. Keep a balance. Separate your work and play time. The better you do it, the more productive you will get in both the areas.


Exhaust a model and go deep
Learnt a feature, used a model. Don't stop there. Keep exploring that new feature. Delve deep into the feature you just learnt. Once you get the feeling that you have learnt all there is to learn. Take a break and again go deep. This is the zone where real insights sprouts!

Gate Preparation _ Section-A !

Greetings of the day !

The title of the post sounds strange. Isn't it ?
Agree ! Actually I was chatting with a student of Section-A who has cleared 3 papers and he was asking me about where to do gate preparation and he was damn excited about it.
Let's take an example first :
Why do you need a bachelors degree to enroll in masters ? because to be a master in mathematics, you must have the basic knowledge of mathematics and it is represented by a bachelors degree if you are going to enroll yourself for masters in mathematics.

What to do in Section-A in terms of Gate Preparation ?

• Identify your real potential because the honest measure of success is what you are doing compared to your true potential.
• Clearing Gate is very easy if you have a clear picture of the basics. History advocates that even after completing the degree, one prepares again for subjects like Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Engineering Mathematics etc. : Hence my request to you is rather than just learning the concepts blindly, focus on achieving excellence in basics, It'll  not only help you in examination hall but will also help you  a lot while doing Gate Preparation
• I always say one thing that your friend circle represents your identity and the marks you score in any exam. Try to have a good friend circle. Take a topic and have a quiz among your circle followed with a debate. By doing so nobody can stop you to meet achievements. 
• While you'are in Section-A, don't go anywhere for Gate Preparation (It's my personal opinion.), Clear your basics of every subject and try to score maximum because my strategy says that very soon the fashion of 60% is going to be outdated. It'll be at least a minimum of 65% because in other universities, students are even getting a cgpa of 9.5 (It's a fact !)  

What not to do during academics ?

• Don't have friends which create negative environment and which further lead to failure. 
• So many people will say to you that Jobs are not there and to leave aesi or to take lateral admission in any other university because Aesi is very difficult and so many things : just say to them "Winners don't quit & Quitters don't win." and if jobs are not there so "Where the hell are seniors working ?"    

Common sense tips for exams

Writing exams is like baking a cake. Yes baking a cake . You got to know what ingrdient to put, how much to bake and when is the time to take the cake out of the oven. Too early or too late, one can ruin the whole effort.

Here are 5 exam time tips. Just studying isnt sufficient, be smart in answering your question paper during exam time.

1. Answer your best question first. A positive first impression goes a long way.

2. Before answering, understand what the question is really asking.

3. Time your questions. Don't time individual questions, but decide on how many question you want to complete in each hour of the exam. Exams are not just test of your knowledge but test of how you manage your time.

4. Be clear, tidy and legible. The less the effort the examiner has to spent on understanding your answers, the better.

5. Last but not the least, keep some time for revising what you have answered. Silly mistakes are the biggest contributer of exam failure, revising what you answered at the end is a good way to minimize these mistakes.

Hope this simple, common sense steps will help you shine in your exams. Good luck.

And before i wind down, last tip, when in the examination hall, stay in the present. Whatever be the situation, tough paper, easy paper, don't run ahead. Stay cool and calm.

How to score high in Avionics !

I've heard many students saying that passing subjects in avionics  is very easy as compare to other streams. Let it be ! make it your motivational factor. Yet I just want to share something with you all....
It might be very easy to get marks between 50-60, but actual test begins after that .. after a benchmark of 60, each variation of 10 marks need lots of efforts by you. It's not just the efforts, It's your smartness. The most important phase is the 15 days before the exams.
1. Let's consider a theoretical question of 10 marks, what do you think ? It's easy to get 9+ out of 10. Yes, It is . & It's us who make this easy by our power of representing thing by Diagrams, Flow Charts and other techniques to represent complex things in simpler way.
2. In every topic of Avionics, making diagrams is the key to success. Along with this if you'll add mathematical approach behind the theoretical concepts so It'll add wonders.
Actually It totally depends on us how to get extra marks from the examiner.
3. In this critical phase of 15 days, try to solve last year question papers. If you don't know the answer so google it, I'm confident that you'll get all the solutions after using internet. Yet in case if you're not satisfied so use social networking websites or approach your seniors.
4. Last but very important, use your pen and paper as much as you can because there are certain things which seems to be easy but once you write them they become complicated to express. So try to solve last year question papers and trust me It really helps a lot even I've completed my degree with good score in just 3 semesters because of my habit of solving the last year question papers.

Feel free to share your problems as Prof. Raja of G.I.E., Chennai says "Doing mistakes in the class room is far better than doing mistakes in the exam hall."

The halo effect and AMAeSI exams

When I was in school, my teacher always used to insist that answer your best question first.

He has stated this so many times that it has become a part of my exam mentality.

Almost all exams I have given after class vii I have answered my best question first.

I was recently reading this book and it mentioned halo effect. The effect of the first impression.

The author, a university professor mentioned that while checking papers he felt that if the first question went well, then the rest of the answers he scored were on average better. If doubt crept, the professor tend to lean towards his first impression.

So he observed that a student scoring good points in first questions, usually got more marks than the other.

Similar thing happens while interviewing someone, if the first question is answered well then for the rest of the interview, halo effect takes control and the guy sails through and little gaps in his performance are ignored or justified, but the opposite happens if the first impression is bad.

How can this help you in the upcoming exams?

Ponder over it. And if you believe the halo effects works then why not use it to your advantage?

I'm confident that all of us know that "Winners don't do different things but they do the things differently".
Yeah ! It's the fact of clearing papers of Aesi. Doing things differently doesn't mean that the answer of a question will become 1 from 0. It means to add values by using Graphs, Flow Charts, Diagrams etc...
As Mr. Singh always says that garnishing your answer sheet matters a lot. Practice last years question papers and always remember that "doing mistakes at the class room is better than doing mistakes in the exam hall."

Don't be an electric current

It's easy to blame someone else. Like electric current we are hard wired to take the path of least resistance.

And when something goes wrong, the path of least resistance is to put the blame on someone.

This is exactly what we do in aesi. After each exam results I see people getting angry and bitching and bad mouthing aesi and it's official. I was also a victim of this.

Getting angry is good. It means you care. I have seen people in aesi who just didnt react. They just coasted along. So anger is good.

But don't take the path of least resistance. Ponder deep and find the mistakes that were under your control but you made. Ponder on what was the root cause for the failure. Yes it's hard and that's why it's rewarding.

If Sachin blamed the bowlers for each of his dismisal without any introspection, I don't think he would have been a great batsman that he is today!!

His skills and knowledge sharpened by first acknowledging his mistakes and then taking steps in correcting them.

This is how we learn and grow. If it weren't for mistakes and little resistance, we would still be in the stone ages.

So don't be an electric current.
