How I used to setup a study routine for next semester

Setting up a routine was the first step that I took when I was in aesi?

Just before the announcement of aesi results, I used to sit and take
stock of my time and subjects and made a routine for the upcoming
semester.

I didn't follow the routine always but most of the time routine gave
me the ability to just begin. It automated many of the decisions I had
to make when sitting to study.

Since I had already assigned fixed hours to a particular subject, so I
didn't had a dilemma of what to study next? All I needed was a glance
at the routine, and I knew where my next hour is going to be utilized.

Here are some of the points that you might find useful while making
your own study routine.

1. Decide how much time you have per day. Keep it modest. Early
enthusiasm points that we can should alot the maximum hour available,
but the best strategy that I found is set a resonable minimum hours.
Set the number of hours that you are sure you will put into study no
matter what.

2. After the hours, decide on the subjects. Ponder on the lengh and
the structure of the subjects? Are they all theory or all numerical or
which section dominates

3. After deciding on the hours and the subjects, now is the time to
fit the subjects to the time available.

4. But before that, set the first half hour or an hour, whichever is
convenient to revise what you have learnt the day before. Yes revising
should be a part of your study routine. Begining early will enable you
to keep everything fresh. As the semester will progress the lengh of
revision hour will increase.

5. After the revision hour, set 30 mins a day ( any time you like) to
do exploration. This is the time when you just explore any topic that
you studied that day. It's not study but a time when you can dig
dipper and learn about a topic more deeply. You might want to use
wikipedia or google or a magazine or off course book for this kind of
exploration. This enables you a fresh prespective and keeps the
interest alive.

6. For the Rest of the remaining time, fill in the subjects, mix them
well. Theory with numerical and vice versa. The idea is to keep the
interest alive and not to be burden with studies.

7. Last and the most important point for making your own study routine
is think your week to have 6 days!! Yes 6 days!! Keep one full day
off. No studies on that day. That day is reserved for any hobby,
networking or anything that you are passionate about. This is the day
you test your passion, experiment and just live. An unplanned day
within 6 planned day will help you navigate your study ship to its
correct destination, help you ponder on your progress.

Hope this points will help you write a routine that maximises your
efforts in time for a fruitful next semester.

After this all that is required is execution. So come on execute.
Commit to yourself that you are going to follow this routine for the
next 30 days. And then do it. If you can continue for the 30 days, it
will become a habit.

So after making the routine, commit the next 30 days for following it.

5 study tips for studying for AeSI

AeSI is tough, AeSI is this, aesi is that... We all hear this often,
but whatever it is, if you want to clear it you have to study for it,
you have to clease those papers. So in this post i will list 5 general
suggestions that any aesi student can apply to improve his chances to
clear AeSI papers.

1. Keep simple.
Yes keep things simple. Make a simple plan. Set a minimum hour and
stick with it. Grand, complicated plans are not needed. Just a simple
barebone plan is lot better than no plan. So keep a simple routine for
study and a strong resolve to stick with it.

2. Attend classes.
Even if you are studing the subject second time, attend classes. Even
if you don't feel like, attend classes. Even when it needs some
effort, attend classes.

Attending classes, discussing and asking questions will open up lot
more mental neurons than just reading old notes.

3. Be systematic
Following a simple plan is better than no plan. A free wheeling wind
mill generates no power. So plan and make simple routine and stick
with it.

Systemetic study of the sections will help you harness the power of
incremental learning. So begin making a routine. Next step is to
execute it

4. Play
Here's a simple rule for making a routine that actually allows soaking
the maximum knowlede in minimum effort.

Decide on the number of hours you want to study per week. Double this
amount and keep this time free for other things of life. If it exceeds
try reducing the number of hours to study and do the process again.

The point is have play time double the amount of study time. This is
the time your mind will have a chance to soak up all the info. This
play time can be used to pursue other projects like learning a new
programming language, reading, model making etc.

5. Murder
Murder all distraction. Murder all fruitless activities. Murder the
belief that you need to study every available hour of the day. Fill
the first hours of the day with the most important activities.

Small projects- why they are important?

If you are following this blog for quite sometimes, you know how much
I am involved in small projects. I try to spend my maximum amount of
free time in such projects.

From cube mesh generator to alumni website, from brouchure design to
creating games for my daughter, from making posters for home to create
excel based expense calculator, I try to devote some time on this
offshoots type of work that I call small projects.

Why small projects are important?
Working in a company brings stucture to our routine. In the intital
period, when there is lot to learn and grasp, things are pretty fast.
But gradually, as one begins to gel into the work and culture of a
company, everything becomes routine. Although we get to do some good
work, but lack of freshness criples our productivity and we begin to
stagnate.

It's here where small projects come in. They provide the randomness.
They provide the required bypass bleed to get things going.

Learning is a constant pursuit and spending time on small projects
enables us keep that spirit of freshness alive.

This is the first post on small projects, will post another one on
what and how to incorporate them in your routine?

Are you working on any of your small personal projects?

Randomness and your new semester

A routine give you a framework. Its an easy reference to what to do
next.

Randomness on the other hand gives you new experiences. It gives you
hope. It surprises you.

I think the reason for germany's defeat in worldcup was lack of
randomness in it's team.

The german team was well structured, disciplined but lacked any
randomness. The other team took advantage of this and succeeded.

So why am I writing about this here?

I want you to add bit of randomness in your life. While studying,
having routine, and timetable is a good idea, but keep one day of the
week to explore. Let that day be randomness day. On this day you try
any crazy idea you have. Read whatever fancies you? Do something that
isn't in the tutorials!

Don't plan the day, let it decide it own course. On that day read off
topics from your core syllabus.

In that day, explore wikipedia for any random topic that just pop up
in your mind.

Mind is a powerful entity and it needs a routine and burst of
randomness to function well. So give that to it.

With amaesi results stated to release any day now, it's right time to
plan for the next semester with a pinch of randomness added to it!!

Commit to a routine

Routines are the framework. Routines are the roads. Routines are the
ground work of future success.

That's the essesnse of studying. Hard work is not about reading loads
of books and stretching yourself. It's about following a set pattern
consistently.

Not only will this improve your results but will build up your mental
discipline.

So commit to a routine. The number of hours you choose to study do not
mater if you commit to put in the time everyday, without fail!

Have you made any routine? How are you following it, share your views.

5 simple steps to have a productive day.

Be it in AeSI as a student or as a trainee in NAL or in your day job, here are 5 simple steps that can help you have a productive day.

1. Plan ahead.
Planning the day well in advance or the night before works great. This works because it untangles planning and action.

2. Make a routine.
Very similar to first point. Having a routine for all routine tasks helps in separating the action from planning. Frees you from day to day decision. Be it in what to study or what to work on next. Clearly maps your path.

3. Mix and match.
Working on one thing hours on is not going to cut it. Imagine how monotonous Sachin's batting would have been if he just used one shot all the time. Similarly, mixing different subjects or different activities in your work life goes a long way in keeping you alert and productive.

4. Not just work.
Work and no play is a bad combination. So Work and play. Don't just do serious stuff. Do the trivial stuff. Mix essential tasks with fun but non essential tasks. Life will be much more easier.

5. Process is important.
"Karam kiyae ja, fal ki chinta mat kar" says Bhagvat Gita. The process is important. The journey is the core. So make it a point to enjoy it. Destination will eventually arrive.

Most successful students and professionals use one or combinations of these steps. Why are you waiting for?

Good luck.

How to create a schedule or study time table that you will stick

image How to create a schedule or time table that you will stick. A time table that you will adhere to and a timetable that will keep you sane and on track of your studies. I began my tracking and sticking to time table techniques in my class VII. This was the time I was introduced to this concept and I readily grabbed it.

The system was simple draft a time table and then stick with it throughout that year. Yes stick with it no matter what. No major changes and no deviations.

So how I did it? Making time table was easy I decided on the time that I had for each day of the week and month and then divided the time that I wanted to have for studies and then divided the study time among various subjects. My tuition teacher seeded my attitude regarding this and it was his influence that I became a regular study guy than the one who sat with books just before exams.

What are the things I took in account when I did this routine. I kept my schedule loose. I was not harsh and kept a minimum time limit for all subjects. It was lenient. I can skip a thing but I had the luxury to just put in 60 minutes in any particular subjects. I usually mixed writing subjects with reading subjects, science with history, math's with geography and so on so every time I didn't get bored even when I had to sit for studies for more than 3 hours.

What was the best thing that helped me succeed in this routine was the minimum time limit that I set and the commitment that whatever be the results of the task, I will stick with the time I have allotted. Sometimes I was just sitting there having the book in my hand and just reading only one paragraph. But I stayed there and maybe wondered in my dreams but never got up to pass the time. This helped me a lot and finally I was in mould with this so much that I never studied more than the required even during the exams.

Are you using a time table for your studies?

Environment has a big impact on goals.

Environment has a big impact on goals. If the environment is hostile
to your goals you are less likely to succeed in your goal but if it's
in in line with your goals then you have much better probability of
getting to your goal.

Take for example my this years goal of writing each and everyday on
this blog. When I began it in January, I had to sttrugleu with it
sometime for coming up with ideas and some times to have to sit and
write a post. But as days went I set into a routine and the all time
net on my phone helped me to get my post done anywhere even if I had
no access to my laptop. The environment there provided me the net and
I setup my routines as discussed in an earlier post and this two
helped me in keeping to the timeline of my goals.

Now the environment and situation has changed drastically, the climate
is lot cooler, days are way longer and luxuary of all pervasive net is
no longer there. So as you can see limited my ability to post as often
as I used to. It's third week and I am still stuggling to get into a
rhythm. Slowly I am moulding routine and habit to adjust with this new
environment.

How do you feel about this? Does environment really affects your goal?
Or do you believe a strong will is all it requires to get things done!
Do comment!!

Breaking inertia

After a few days of good posting and setting up a momentum, an external routine change brought everything to a stop.

One day I didn't post and then the next day and then the next, it continued and I realized I was in a rut of inertia.

For a couple of months I have been observing how difficult it becomes once I loose the momentum. The inertia restricts getting into the previous mode.

So over the years I have seen these three techniques valuable in conquering inertia.

1. Time yourself for a simple task. For example to break my posting inertia, I set a timer for 7 mins and then allow myself to write whatever comes to my mind. This initial jolt of action usually does the trick.

You can employ it to break your non study inertia, to set your routine to include some fortran learning or something more specific to your need.

2. Take up the simplest task and do it. If the project is overwhelming, then take up the simplest task related to it and resolve to work on it in next 10 mins. Notice I haven't mention complete it. I said work on it. Make a huge difference.

For my current personal project, I am building a patron neural file reader, and to curb the inertia that has developed because of my break from it, I sat down and just choose to do the simplest task of writing a flow chart for what I need to do.

3. Change your activity. If the activity is indoors. Go do something outdoors. If it's computer related, do something non computer related. Just changing the context for sometimes helps you crumble the inertia.

These were the techniques that has helped me curb being stuck in inertia.

Inertia has featured a lot on this blog and you can found how and where via this link http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=inertia

Lazy routine that's easy to follow

In a recent mail, someone wrote, "I am lazy, can you suggest an easy
study routine for me?"

This post is an answer to that.

For him I will say. All you need to do is follow the next two rule
consistently.

The rules are.
1. Set one hour for study and
2. Let the hour be the first waking hour.

Yes follow these two rules religiously. If he/she can follow just this
two rules he will clear AeSI without any bumps.

Except the first hour after waking, in all other times he is free to
loiter and spend his time as he likes.

I have followed this advice to some degree in my aesi. And now this is
my default stategry in running this blog and doing all sorts of small
projects I am involved in.

So my friend, if setting big routines overwhelms you, try this for
30days. It's the cheapest and inexpensive way to overcome your inertia.

Two things AeSI student should adopt in 2010

This year whatever your goals or resolution is, if you are student of AeSI then there are two things I would like you to adopt.

  • One is study with a set routine.
  • The other is don't miss classes and use them where most of your learning takes place.

Adopt this two habits and make them a part of your life and you won't have to struggle all semester.

All the best and a have a great year ahead!!!

Myaesi blog is back.

Yes myaesi blog is back.

For last 3 years I had been constantly updating this blog for every single day. So in mid march I decided to have a life without myaesi for sometime.

So I took this long break. No updates.

This experience was revealing. There were 3 times when I had some new info that I wanted to pass on but I had to resist.

Although I wasn't writing posts, I still received some comments on the blog.

I needed this break so that I can bring something more useful to you guys. I don't know if I have got anything, but from now on myaesi is back.

Getting into the routine will take sometime, but hopefully the posts will become regular from now on.

Hope all of you guys/gals are doing well!

What have I learnt by this habit of posting daily?

Notice I call it a habit not a goal anymore. Doing the same thing for
this long had made it a habit. So what have I learnt from this.

Show up
Yes everyday I showed up. Took the laptop out and just started. Never
new in advance what I will write but just began. This created the
posts that you all are reading and hopefully gaining something.

So start showing up to whatever goal you have setup. If your aim is to
get good marks, then show up and stick to your routine. If you aim is
to learn catia, ansys etc. show up. Switch on the software and begin
tinkering. If you want a productive training, then show up everyday,
consistently.

Showing up is so simple yet how few times we use it. I have been
blogging on this blog since 2004 and this is the first year that I
have really taken an extra effort to be consitent in posting. So it
was big lesson for me.

As I said earlier, since lot of travel is involved in October, so
posting rate might suffer. But rest assured that I will be writing
everyday and posts will flash only when I have the opportunity to
connect to the Internet.

What if your plans go haywire?

turbofan-engine-rolls-royce-on-the-podWhat if your plans go haywire? What if your well laid out action steps are turned meaningless by an external factor.

Like your time table for study is ruined since that time is now taken by an unscheduled extra class. In my case this has happened recently when my office timing changed and my well formed routine got twisted. I am still trying to cope up with it. But here are 3 things that has helped me so my plans of goals are still on track.

  • First hour of walking is very important for me. This is when I execute most of my plans.  I get up and do the stuff that I need to do. So utilize the first hour of your day and you will have most productive all day long.

  • Second thing  that I did was stop thinking start doing. Yes doing is what will take you closer to your goals so stop thinking and begin doing.

  • Now doing is always not that easy. My action plan for this was start with a small step. Small step that requires no extra effort. Like if I need to write an article I just begin it outline it. If I have to begin a big project assignment I begin breaking down the big thing to small steps and begin doing the first small steps.

All this small steps stack up and are helping me when my plans go haywire.

Do you any such tips and experience. Do share it with me.

AMAeSI result

If you wondering when the results of amaesi exams is going to come,
then don't wonder. It's always been out in august and this semester
seems no different.

If I know aesi correctly then the results will be due in begining of
the second week of august.

So stop thininking about the results, get a copy and plan out your
next semesters routine. Don't wait for the results to plan. Get into
the study mode now. Setup a minimum hour that you will put and start
the walk.

No need to be grand and ambitious in planning but begin taxing now.
Roll the ball and keep the inertia going.

So if you are waiting for the amaesi results, you have two choices.
One is to just wait and watch and the other option is to slowly get
your engines started. The choice is yours.

Take a day off - How to study for AeSI?

This took me a long time to understand.

When I was in AeSI, i read many times about benefits of taking a day
off but was never able to get myself to do so.

But in section B, with 5 subjects at one go, I had to take a day off
as all the other days were filled with GIE, and Natrajan Sir!!

This is when my studies and study habits improved a lot.

The result was that I cleared, propulsion 1,2,3, aero 1, and advance
strength of materials in one semester.

Studies is just like being in a gym. If after a heavy exercise, you
don't give your body proper rest, you won't see much of an
improvement. Have rest in your exercise routine and you will see your
body blosom.

Similar thing happens with the brain. Give it a day of rest, it gets
the time to reorganise and regroup.

So my advice to every aesi student is take one day off. Study for 6
days. And on the seventh day give it complete freedom to do whatever
it likes. Do everything but studies!!

Choose whatever day, that's not important. Important is choosing a day
to rest and wonder!

This post is part of the series on how to study for AeSI?

How to pass AeSI exams?

  • Don't study, yes seriously don't study.
  • Don't mug.
  • Don't setup a routine.
  • Don't bother attending classes.
  • Don't give a damn to subjects.
  • Don't look at the syllabus book.
  • Don't open your books.
  • Don't write down what you learn.
  • Don't keep records?
  • Don’t discuss what you study?

Yes seriously if you do any of the thing you will never pass. So do everything that is opposite.

The only way to pass AMAeSI, just like everything else, is put in the time.
