Solidworks CAD video tutorials

Solidworks was the main CAD program that i used in NAL. Its cousin sister of CATIA and in my opinion solidworks is the best CAD pacakage to begin your computer aided
design journey.

And what can be a better way to learn it?

Apart from watching someone, i think the best way to learn CATIA or SOLIDWORKS is to watch video tutorial. And you tube has many. Here's the collection of some that i liked.

Do check them out by clicking the continue reading link.

An open letter to Anna University from Mr. Bishnujee

An open letter Dr. D Viswanathan, Vice Chancellor & Chairman ,Southern Region AICTE Anna University Chennai

Subject: Request for changes in Admission for Aeronautical Society of India 's Engineering Graduates for ME program at Anna University.

Honorable D Viswanathan, Sincere compliments of the day. It has been astonishing to note that when we are heading forward in 21st century,Anna University has been heading in reverse direction in 20th Century. It has been brought to my notice that your concerned reputed Anna University has made changes to admission policy after its 11th Council meeting to Professional Aeronautical Engineering Graduates from Aeronautical Society of India for ME Aeronautical Engineering program, should be possessing 2 years Post Qualification experience in order to secure admission in your reputed University programme.

It has been surprising to note that Aeronautical Society of India's Engineering Graduates have been admitted in Sheffield hallam University England for there MSc in Engineering Program,Prestigious Penn State University,USA has admitted current fresh pass out Graduates from AeSI in there MS programme in Aerospace Engineering, University of Southern California has already MS Degree holders with AeSI as first qualification,University of Missouri,USA has also offered place in there MS program for current pass out AeSI Graduates ,Salford University MS in Aerospace Engineering program in England and AeSI has been listed as Approved University list from India on University of Miami,Florida,USA,Arizona State University for MS in Aerospace Engineering program and all major Credential Evaluation bodies has given AeSI same status like any other Indian University in India.Boeing Company,USA accords AeSI Graduates as same status as ABET Accrediated BSc in Aeronautical Engineering from USA University.

AeSI Graduates in past have numerous laurels at IIT Chennai last year Techfest 2006 and also recipient of First Ever Cayley Award 2003 in England by Royal Aeronautical Society,London. http://www.csirwebistad.org/aesi/pages/cayleyaward03.htm
Everything proves that AeSI Engineers have proved to be more successful in there career as Aerospace Engineer than Graduates from Other Universities like IITs ,MITs,IISc and already Boeing,NASA and Airbus where AeSI Engineers have executed successfully in many reputed Boeing 787 Programmes in USA,Airbus A380 programmes in UK and also in NASA's programmes.

I am aware that numerous staffs of Anna University are on Academic and governing council of AeSI,India and this incidents and discriminatory against Professional Engineering Graduates of AeSI is ridiculous.More over you people must already be aware that almost 98% of AeSI Graduates are full time students and it has been mentioned even in AeSI Registration form regarding that. I would be glad if you people could take necessary measures to correct the process of admission for Professional Graduates in Master's program and remove the 2 years criteria for Aeronautical Society of India AeSI Engineers.

Kind regards
Bishnujee Singh

Indian aerospace industry this week

I love the news that i saw regarding India aerospace this week on indianaeronews. Most of them are encouraging for aerospace professionals.

India to raise 26% FDI in defense is one of them, just like the FDI helped sectors like telecom, this move by the government will give a thrust to the aerospace sector of India and it will create jobs for aerospace professionals

As Indian government pushed ahead its plan, private companies are like Boeing can't be left behind. Boeing IDS has reached out to the Indian aerospace and technology sectors to identify potential public and private industrial partners. This is one more news that accentuates my view of the Boeing company that its looking very positively towards India for expansions. This again is good for Indian aerospace and aerospace engineers of India.

Boeing is not alone in its quest to expand its wings in India, AIRBUS, EADS too have an eye for India.

A couple of months back i and my dear friend roopkishore visited the DAE roadshow and there we discussed that aviation and air pot management is the where most of the growth will happen in aviation. Same was pointed out by the folks of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise in their slide show.

So its not surprising when International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that over the next five years aviation in India will grow by an annual rate of up to 10 %. According to a 2007 survey by Airbus, India will require more than 900 aircraft seating over 100 passengers by 2025," High growth in in these sectors means positive and good requirements for aerospace professionals. So get up and get ready folks.

And talking about Dubai, how can we miss that Dubai is on the fast-track of reinforcing itself as the hub of major aviation and aerospace activity - not just within the region, but on a global scale as well. Evidence is abundant: The emirate is building what will become the world's largest airport - Dubai World Central; Dubai Aerospace Enterprise has been active in acquiring capacity in leasing, maintenance and repair and airline. Question that they asked in GE interview

A few months back a good friend of mine went to GE for an interview for the post related to stress anlysis. I had an email chat with him about it. Here are the technical questions he faced while there.

1) what is the need of modal analysis?

2) Equation that computer solve for the above analysis?

3) what is the basic equation to find the natural frequency of any specimen?

4) question related to cantilever beam?

5) about project?

Apart from this above questions, there was questions on AMAeSI that he has listed in his resume. So i think Bishnujee's suggestion of using BE aero graduate is much more appropriate and you can explain it much better.

3 glaring mistakes recent graduates shouln't do during job search

I have been writing this resume tips and things related to job hunting quite a lot for past couple of weeks and my friend and former roommate who have just cleared AeSI, is the main inspiration behind all of this.

I want him to get a good job and get a head start in his career. Its been almost 2 months since he has become an engineer but i had not seen anyone of the company calling him or taking him seriously . So i wondered what might be the cause, Since interviews came through the resumes, i decided to ask him to show me his resume.

After 3 and 4 reminders and 4 weeks delay i finally saw his resume and frankly i was disappointed and hurt!!

There were many glaring mistakes and shortfalls in that resueme and the hurt came from the fact that i have written so many things before here but he never applied them in his resume...

But fortunately i saw it and made him see his mistakes.

Before i go in for his resume analysis there were some other factors that i noticed that a new fresher from AeSI should abide by.....

First thing that any fresh graduate should have is a separate account in naukri.com, monsterindia.com or other jobs site. My friend when i asked didn't have one. He just went to those sites and checked the requirement and then applied for the once he liked. Thats not the best or the optimum way. YOu need to create an online profile which can be accessed by the recruiters and then there is the feature of alerts. which is only available and relevant jobs come only when you have a good updated profile on those sites.

Secondly as i said earlier, i saw his resume only after 3 or 4 calls. He was lazy. Sending resume is not the first part, having good guidance and being proactive is the mantra for job hunting. Sitting passively just likes chickens on egg will not yield anything....

Its good to have friends and colleagues refer your resume, but that's not enough. Have a profile and search for your job yourself. Just sending your resume to some guy who came to your room and asked you to send is not enough, go to the guy's company's website, check what the requirement is and if that is not listed, check the nature of work the company does and then modify and update your resume accordingly and shoot it.

Rejoice aerospace engineers you are in demand

Ever since the enews of aesi.org died, i felt there was a need for a similar thing so as to keep pace with aerospace industry we now have indianaeronews.blogspot.com and i hope the http://indianaeronews.blogspot.com is keeping up the good work.

Two campanies that remained in limelight this week in indian aerospace are Boeing and TATA. Boeing is partnering and increasing its business intrests in india and if you are following the news steadily you will notice that TATA is slowing moving into aerospace sector. The partnership with boeing and brazilian aircraft maker Embraer are pointers that this company is having great plans for aerospace. So buck up aerospace engineers, you have TATA waiting for you.

Another organization that is taking things into his hand is my former organisation NAL, It was in news this week for the regional transport aircraft (RTA) for which it has got the seed money from government of india.

This news apart flightglobal had another article on the shortage of aerospace engineers and that i guess is a good news for all the budding aerpasce engineers. Another news is regarding EDST, India’s largest PLM Solutions and 3D Visual Simulation provider, with its headquarters in Bangalore, which announced the launch of its training centre in Bangalore which will provide industry-focused training in PLM tools like CATIA V5, ENOVIA.
With Indian Aerospace and Defence budget expected to touch $100 billion mark in the next 10 years, an offset clause warranting foreign defence vendors to source 30 to 50 per cent of contract value within India, is expected to fetch several billion dollars worth of business for local industry.

So rejoice aerospace engineers you are in demand!!!

News snippets from indianaeronews.blogspot.com

Leading aviation companies like Boeing subsidiary Aviall, Lufthansa Technik, Singapore-based ST-Aerospace, France-based ATR, and KLM are planning to set up supply centres for aircraft components in the country. At present, carriers like Air India, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, SpiceJet, Go Air and IndiGo have to either import spare parts in bulk and stock them or get into lease agreements with various manufacturers.

Flightglobal reports

The assembly lines may not be on the verge of grinding to a halt, or the launch pads about to be put into mothballs. But major problems in the supply of engineers in the aerospace industry are undoubtedly looming on the horizon.

For an industry whose self-image is one of thrusting achievement and pushing the technological envelope, the realities of company demographics make sobering reading. The workforce is ageing and the point is approaching at which the number of retirees will no longer be matched by the arrival of new entrants from universities and colleges.

Skills and tools for Avionics stream students of AeSI

Among all branch of aerospace, i think avionics has one of the highest scope in india. With so many companies in india related to work on aircraft systems. So i asked a avionics senior about the kind of skills an avionics engineer should have.

Read his advice

How important is the field and department before your choose your training?

After AeSI, most of the AeSI folks follow this trend of training, some provided by AeSI and some seek on their own initiative. But in the run to have some training they tend to choose whatever comes their way with disregard to the field and the department....

I am proud of AeSI and AMAeSI

One thing that i realized while i was doing training in National Aerospace Labs was that i am proud of AeSI and the stuff it has prepared me for. IN aerospace it felt that aesi has prepared me better than any folks i encountered in NAL. Similar is the condition of fellow friend Anupam who went to HAL

Concurrent Technologies will look for avionics engineers!!

This news item intrigued me..

Concurrent Technologies will invest 1.1 mn pounds for setting up a new facility in Bangalore which will recruit highly skilled specialist electronic design engineers

And the comapny says

“This is not a case of going to India for lower cost people. The reason is to solve our recruitment problem. India produces hundreds of thousands of very high-quality engineers each year,” Glen Fawcett, managing director, Concurrent Technologies told local media in Essex.

The company which designs, manufactures and sells sophisticated computer equipment has three offices in the United States and one in Beijing. Telecommunications, military and aerospace markets are the main users of their products.

So rejoice avionics and aerospace engineers. And prepare yourself !!!

One cardinal rule that you must remember for any interview.

I have faced so many interviews and talked to many of my collegues who have conducted interviews and this rule always shows up and the interviee follwoing this rule had the maximum chance of being recruited...

The rule is

"Always answer questions with confidence, even if you’re lying"

Interview folks love to ask tough questions to see what kind of answer you’re going to give. So give an answer with confidence. The actual answer you give, whether in front of a group or talking one on one, is much less important than how you say it. Make something up if you have to. And when people try to confuse you, saying " Are you sure" Be confident and say yes!!

Well a friend of mine is in a turbomachinery company where the top management are not very conversant with the technical topics, but still when they are interviewing someone they toss some difficult technical questions and check how the candidate handle them. So just take this advice. What ever be the question. If they doubt you on an answer, be confident and stick to your answers.

One of the most common questions I got when in NAL was, “What’s the work you did in NAL?” The truth is that in a NAL, i did so many things from programming to analysis to designing, but that answer can only get you in trouble. So one day I will say I do design and analysis and the next day I will say that I did programming. Both answers are right, but I’m much better off giving one simple answer and saying it with confidence.
