AeSI AMAeSI Results and some questions

As soon as I saw Himalya post announcing the AESI results, I downloaded the pdf of results. Seeing the numbers, the statistician in me was not able to resist playing with that data.

So with few tinkering and re grouping, I  tried answering these following questions i had in mind looking at the data.

  1. What is the highest no Pass in any subject in section A and B?
  2. What are the top 3 top scoring subjects in Section A ?
  3. What are the top 3 top scoring subjects in Section B ?
  4. What are the top 3 low scoring subject in Section A ?
  5. What are the top 3 low scoring subject in Section B ?
  6. Avionic 1 or 2 which one is more scoring?
  7. Propulsion 1 or Propulsion 2 which one scores more ?
  8. Which elective subject is most and least scoring?
  9. What are the top scores of each subject?
  10. Which subject gets most borderline score in section A/Section B ?
  11. Which subjects are easy and scoring?

Before you look at the data, some usage explanation.

  • Max Mark is maximum marks score in that subject
  • 75% got this means that 75% of the students who appeared in that paper scored more than this.
  • % of 50 represents the percentage of students of total appeared who got just 50, the minimum score to pass.
  • No of pass is the number of students who cleared the subject.
Top scoring subjects in Section A max marks 75 % got this % of 50 no of pass
STRENGTH OF MATERIALS 91 65.3 20.31% 128
ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS 87 63.0 23.47% 98
ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN 79 61.0 25.17% 143
APPLIED MATHEMATICS – I 97 61.0 31.82% 110

Applied Math 1 and Strength of Material got the top marks

For me top scoring means not the top marks but the subject that 75% of students got high marks.

Low scoring Subjects in Section A max marks 75 % got this % of 50 no of pass
MICROPROCESSOR AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING 56 53 53.42% 73
INTRODUCTION TO AERONAUTICS 76 56 38.04% 92
FLUID MECHANICS 81 57.5 35.71% 70
WORKSHOP TECHNOLOGY 72 59 24.48% 143

MICROPROCESSOR AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING  got the lowest score and more than 53% of students who appeared got just 50.

PRINCIPLES OF HELICOPTER ENGINEERING 71 64.5 0.00% 3
GAS DYNAMICS 90 64 15.32% 124

Gas dynamics maybe the most popular elective, but CAD-CAM is the highest scorer. Minimum score is close to 80.

AIRWORTHINESS AND AIR REGULATIONS 59 58.5 0.00% 2

Propulsion 1 is the lowest scorer. 87% of those who appeared got 50.
Sad to see Propulsion, my stream in the top 5 low scorers.

Luck and AMAeSI exams

Brian Tracey's formula for being luckier:

"Luck is quite predictable. To have more luck, take more chances."

Don't short circuit your chances by not even trying.

Brain Tracey is spot on. Applies equally well to getting job, training and passing exams!!

Making AMAeSI a Viable Option

This presentation was presented in One of the AGM's of AeSI by Air CMde Raghubir Singh.

I know this was instrumental in making AeSI change its syllabus and updating it. I just found this ppt in my old laptop and wanted to share with you all.

The halo effect and AMAeSI exams

When I was in school, my teacher always used to insist that answer your best question first.

He has stated this so many times that it has become a part of my exam mentality.

Almost all exams I have given after class vii I have answered my best question first.

I was recently reading this book and it mentioned halo effect. The effect of the first impression.

The author, a university professor mentioned that while checking papers he felt that if the first question went well, then the rest of the answers he scored were on average better. If doubt crept, the professor tend to lean towards his first impression.

So he observed that a student scoring good points in first questions, usually got more marks than the other.

Similar thing happens while interviewing someone, if the first question is answered well then for the rest of the interview, halo effect takes control and the guy sails through and little gaps in his performance are ignored or justified, but the opposite happens if the first impression is bad.

How can this help you in the upcoming exams?

Ponder over it. And if you believe the halo effects works then why not use it to your advantage?

Best of luck for your exams!!

Three Things.......

Three Things for an AeSI Graduate

Congrats to everyone who graduated from AeSI this semester.

As you enter the next phase I would like to take this opportunity to add these three things to what Himalya has touched upon in his last post.

1. Respect your degree. You have worked hard for it. Respect it now. Yes you weren't treated well or felt unwelcome, but now is the time to take pride in it. If you have cleared AeSI, you are one of the best in your profession. Always remember, if you don't respect it, no one else will.

1. Be good at one subject. This is of utmost importance not only from the point of view of interviews but in making it the stepping stone for future success. We cannot be good at everything, but we can always be better at one thing. Find that niche and dominate it. Dominance and solid command in one subject or skill pays rich dividend, so cultivate it now.

1. Network. Join AeSIAA, linkedin, ouraesi etc and build your influence. Network is not just contacting seniors with requests. True networking means contributing in the community, taking initiatives, raising your hand in voluntary activities, and helping people in your joined community. That's networking.

Yes there is no typo. All this points deserve no 1. They are the three pillars you will need, to STAND out in your next phase after AeSI!

Congrats once again and Be a star!!

Tips for avionics students of AMAeSI.

Tips for Avionics students of AMAeSI

It has been proved in the last several years that Avionics is rocking. There are profiles who have completed their degree in just three semester with good percentage (65-70)%. I have seen profiles saying that avionics is the easiest stream as compare to other streams of AeSI.
Yes It's easy because of a fact that It's interesting, the modules and the topics always gives a real time feeling like "learning the concepts behind Instrument Landing System, how landing gears absorb shocks? , how a radar works ? and a lot......."
Relating the above fact to the profiles who fail in the session Dec.2011, or to the new comers... I wish to give few advice and I am confident that It'll work.
1. Have interest, interest and interest in every subject, every topic and every content.
2. Either do all topics with having excellence or DO FEW but WITH CONCEPTS ON FINGURE TIPS.
3. Practice atleast last 4 years (8 semesters) question papers. It's the most important thing to kiss success and to score high.
4. Don't just learn anything without understanding (ratta marna), For Example : You have solved all questions of D.C.Network theorems but you don't know "Does resistance have polarity or not ?" or "What a capacitor does ? "
5. There will be time when you'll not be able to find the solution of a question/objective, try to google it or take senior's help.. but remember a fact that before entering inside the examination hall... you should know ALL solutions.
6. Diagrams, Flow Charts, Graphs and Plots help a lot in garnishing your answer sheets.
For Example : In the latest pattern of Control System question papers, you'll find one theory question and one numerical in a 20 marks question. So the approach of garnishing helps you in gettting 20 out of 20 and trust me It happens.
7. Those who are in the 4th semester of Sec.B, start networking, join groups like AeSIAA, Linkedin , my-aesi and all.... It'll help you to be confident and to wipe the worries of the jobs.
8. Try to google what a company wants from a fresher, which are the companies who welcome freshers and a lot.... Do Analysis and start having excellence in the skills so that by the time when you will finish your degree, you'll have a job in your hand.

Good Luck to all students of AMAeSI !!!!

Don't be an electric current

It's easy to blame someone else. Like electric current we are hard wired to take the path of least resistance.

And when something goes wrong, the path of least resistance is to put the blame on someone.

This is exactly what we do in aesi. After each exam results I see people getting angry and bitching and bad mouthing aesi and it's official. I was also a victim of this.

Getting angry is good. It means you care. I have seen people in aesi who just didnt react. They just coasted along. So anger is good.

But don't take the path of least resistance. Ponder deep and find the mistakes that were under your control but you made. Ponder on what was the root cause for the failure. Yes it's hard and that's why it's rewarding.

If Sachin blamed the bowlers for each of his dismisal without any introspection, I don't think he would have been a great batsman that he is today!!

His skills and knowledge sharpened by first acknowledging his mistakes and then taking steps in correcting them.

This is how we learn and grow. If it weren't for mistakes and little resistance, we would still be in the stone ages.

So don't be an electric current.

As always best of luck for the AMAeSI results!

Embedded Systems_1

If you are planning to learn Embedded Systems, so I'll suggest that before joining any institute have perfect command on below topics.
1. Basic Electronics
(Interview Questions are always (80%-90%) asked from the basics. and if one is not good at Basic Electronics so I feel that he'll face lots of problems to learn Embedded Systems so It's better that before joining any institute, we can build up our basics... )
2. Digital Electronics
(Number Systems, pin diagrams of various ICs and ol... Flip Flop, resistor , their color coding , counters etc .... must be on your finger tips. It helps a lot if you know the theoretical concepts behind it when you enter into any institute to learn Embedded Systems.  )
3. Microprocessors and System Architecture
(Example : I know that what is flip flop but I must know that how it works and the concepts behind "storing a bit of data. It really helps a lot to become good in Embedded.")
4. Programming Language - "C"
(Even it's Embedded-C which is used for Embedded programming however the concepts are same in general. and C is the base of any programming language. I personally feel that before joining any institute to learn Embedded Systems we must know the basics of programming. )

By the way Good Luck in advance to all students who are waiting for their result of AMAeSI.

Why I don't pass a subject in AeSI?

I don't know. But let's me share what I did when I didn't pass.

After blasting aesi for the result, I usually turned to my own short coming.

And to my surprise I always found that there were some things that I would have done better. I was never able to outrightly blame aesi for my failure. A shadow of doubt always remained that I had lacked somewhere. I missed something.

But the act of thinking back and trying to ascertain the reason of my failure surely helped me see the cracks in my own study system. I learnt from them and finally I did pass those subjects.

So all I can suggest you guys and gals is once the amaesi aesi results are in. Take stock on what you did right and what went wrong? Why you failed? What you did in your passing subject and what you didn't in the failed subject?

An hour of this can go a long way in improving your studies.
