Future Requirements of Aerospace Engineering Business

Information Source : https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/future-requirements-aerospace-engineering-business-ashok-sanmani

In last few weeks I read this major news on air pollution; 1. ‘Fresh air is for sale’ in China, A Canadian Start-up Company is selling fresh air in China’s major cities and the first 500 bottles (of 7 liters) have been sold quicker than expected. 2. Delhi government has enforced an experimental plan of odd-even concept to reduce the number of vehicles on road to reduce percentage of man-made CO2 and the government is also thinking stop the registration of new high-powered diesel vehicles. And, on 05-Jan, Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Mercedes and other premier companies argument saying ‘Will your cars emit Oxygen’….? About news are related to emission. May be above solutions are short term precautionary measures.

The long-run solution is, to design and build vehicles which emit less CO2. The engineering industry is under tremendous pressure to reduce the CO2. From major OEMs and Tier 1s, lot of experiments and researches are happening to reduce CO2 and NOx and it turned as major challenge to the engineering industry.
Even Aerospace industry is also facing same issues on CO2 emission. “ACARE Chairman, Peter Hartman says “Attitude towards to Environmental issues because of increase in airline traffic; ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research) in Europe in 2002 laid out targets to reduce the emission; 50% reduction in CO2 ; 50% reduction in perceived noise; 80% reduction in NOx by 2020”.

Below picture shows a percentage of ‘greenhouse gas emissions’ by industry-wise:

Possible probable ways to reduce the amount of CO2 and NOx irrespective of industry are; increase of structural efficiency, development of advanced engines, design of light weight structures using advanced metallic materials and composites, correct estimation of loads and use of right factors, timely weight reduction campaigns, alternate fuels, improved aerodynamics etc.
In Sep and Nov 2014 I posted two articles on the role of advanced metallic and composites materials in aerospace industry. In order to reduce CO2 use of advanced materials is one of the major options available. Apart from aerospace industry the industries like automotive, rail and wind energy industries seeing huge benefit from this.

About Aerospace industry:
The man-made CO2 from commercial aviation is only up to 2% but the CO2 emission per passenger per kilometer is 153gms which is much higher compared to other mode of transports. Hence, aerospace industry is also under tremendous pressure to reduce emission of CO2.

Since future requirements for number of aircrafts are much higher compared to last few decades, IoT also expected to play a vital role in manufacturing engineering. This is basically to increase rate of production with minimized errors. But, advanced engineering design and developments is the one which is expected to  bring emissions down.
  • As per one of the Boeing report, first century of composites is between 1940-2040, in that 75 years have been passed and more research and developments have been carried out from aerospace industry. As a result of this both Airbus and Boeing are able to design and build the aircrafts with 50 plus percentage of composites. The aerospace industry has seen huge benefit from the use of composites which reduced the weight, CO2 emission and certain extent noise level. The use of composites will also bring a more pleasant environment for passengers as it will allow considerate increase in cabin humidity.
Both Airbus and Boeing are working on new technologies which shall further improve aerodynamic efficiency at reduced weight with less CO2 emission. Some of them are;
From Airbus:
  • Under mission of ‘Aircraft future 2050 Vision – Eco Climb, Express skyways, Free glide approach, Ground operations and Power’
  • Working on ‘Laminar flow experiment on wing section’ along with GKN and Saab
From Boeing and NASA:
  • Working on reduced vertical with active flow control technology under mission ‘Smaller Tails and Big breakthroughs’
  • Non-stick wings to get rid planes of bug guts
  • Shapeshifting of Aircraft wings
As per reports, surely and shortly these researches and experiments are becoming reality will bring huge benefit to the commercial aircraft category. The outcome of some of these researches can be implemented in existing flying aircrafts as retrofits and some in new designs.
Apart from Boeing and Airbus other premier companies like Bombardier and Embraer are also investing lot in composites and advanced technologies.
  • Bombardier is following in Boeing's footsteps with regard to introducing large-scale composite structures in making commercial aircrafts. Bombardier management knows that composites are the way to go. This is the future.
  • Embraer says that, Lightning strike, repair, durability under impact, post-buckling, metal-composite interfaces, are some of those signs. These issues are being analyzed and continue being a challenge. Knowing about that, Embraer has been investing in trainings and incentives the development.
The global advanced composites market is growing at a faster rate mainly due to the growing demand in aerospace & defense, automotive, and wind energy applications. In order to meet the increasing demand from global markets, the leading companies recently invested heavily to increase their production capacities. Investments are also being made in research facilities to develop new technologies that reduce the manufacturing cost.

About Engineering Services companies:
  • In changed scenario of business trend and requirements engineering services companies need to do more with ‘engineering’ than ‘services’ alone. This also indicates that, in future, services type job opportunities are coming down and it will surely affect the growth of some companies who does not understand the value of engineering.
  • In contradiction to this, some engineering services companies are optimizing the cost by removing people at senior level. To meet future requirements the companies need to improve their technical strength otherwise, today’s their decision might become expensive for such companies as the dimension of the business changing.
  • With current gained experience the companies shall do same type of work but that type of work may not come again. Since the future requirements are different, different approach need to be adopted. Otherwise, this increases unemployment rate.
  • In last two decades Indian aerospace industry has not able to create and develop 10 designated chief engineers but, managed to create few hundred PMP holders.
  • More qualified graduates (PhD’s and Master graduates) need to spend their time in providing solutions to technical problems, innovation and competency development areas. In one of interview Airbus senior vice president said future lies in new competency, technology and innovation.
  • In India universities/institutes are producing more BE/M Tech qualified graduates than the requirement but industries need to make them as good engineers.

5 Master Tips for Effective Interview

Interview by listening this word many of us get scared....Aren't you...?

Interview is not a only one way process .It's a two way process...There is nothing to get scared ..its just like a formal talk which we have to do with official person.

It's does not matter weather you are having interview for job ,for relation ship or for anything but there are several things which holds good for all.

So here it goes,
  1. Before going to interview make some homework .in case you are going for job interview have a look on company website,if it is for relation than look on social media sites this will give you many idea about the insight of the person/organization.
  2. 1st check it out what you had mentioned in your resume ,CV or bio data. maximum of the question will be asked from that only.so be confident what you are providing .
  3. Don't only just listen and answer .Take active part in the conversation .It's not like that you have to satisfy their criteria but your should also be comfortable with the way they work.the way they treat their employees .ask about anything whatever you want to know .If you ask question based upon your research ,they will feel that you are really very serious as well as interested and you got a plus point over other candidates.
  4. after having interview thank them honestly .
  5. send them a hand written thank you note and also do mention that what you like the most in conversation .
If you have any other tips than please share with us in comment section.

Find the Creative Leader in you.

"The role of a Creative Leader is not to have all the ideas; it's to create a culture where everyone can have ideas and feel that they're valued."

It's human tendency that whenever we talk about being a leader, so many students often relate this with professional terms such as "Team Leader" in an organization or may be "Politician". However the real meaning of a leader and thus leadership is far ahead of the basic terminologies.

Leadership is not everybody's cup of tea but with experience, history advocates that many people have become great leaders. Leadership, I mean Creative Leadership indeed is all about creating a culture wherein every student surrounding you can lead some other students. It's all about a creating a culture, wherein everybody is free to think out of the box.

Recently there was a post on Facebook asking for help related to admission in VTU. I indeed have my own reservations on this. Let's try to understand the another aspect of this situation. It's always great to send them a letter explaining about the AeSI graduates who are leading many great organizations or the achievements of AeSI graduates. BUT how about having a meeting with the VTU heads ?

The situation could have been killed on the spot at the initial level itself, if the very first student would have been able to showcase the value of The Aeronautical Society of India. He could have awaken the leader inside him and explains the greatness of AeSI. It's all about leadership.

With MyAeSI blog, we always recommend you to respect your degree. Whenever you're going for an interview, answer each and every question in such a way that it should reflect your leadership skills. If somebody asks you about AeSI, so create a brand impact in such a way that in the future, when he has 100 resumes, so he select the one who is from AeSI. The brand image should be so high that he should think 100 times before saying 'NO' to any candidate from AeSI.

Happy Leadership.

Hi All

An update on Placement Drive.

From: Lalan Singh <singh.lalan@gmail.com>
Date: May 30, 2014, 10:23:58 AM GMT+05:30
To: aesiaa@googlegroups.com
Subject: "AeSIAA (Regd.)" Job fair Update
Reply-To: aesiaa@googlegroups.com

Dear Students and Alumnus,

It's very sad that we couldn't hold Job fair due to lack of responses from companies. It was very difficult to motivate companies in hiring for permanent position in current conditions. Our regular follow-up at least brought some interest as Intern/Temporary positions in few companies. Association will be passing the selected cv to those companies based on requirements.  Association would also communicate to candidate on the scheduled interview if required.

All the Very Best.

Best Regards,

Lalan

FAQ : What should I do after AeSI exams ?

One of the most frequently asked question among AeSI Graduates is:

- What should I do after AeSI exams?

Though there are many posts in this group which can help you to get the answer of above question. However based on my industry experience, I would like to bring one very important point in everybody's kind considerations.

Yesterday somebody was asking me where should I go to learn Modeling & Simulation.

- My answer is why do you want to go anywhere and invest your money when everything is available online.
- Take an example of MATLAB : There are so many video tutorials available which certainly are created to meet the requirements of students. Why don't you start spending one hour daily on learning MATLAB from such tutorials. Even you can download the trial version of such software.
- Most of such software organizations also develop their academic communities. Attend those communities and start discussing your projects worldwide.
- BUT does MATLAB means all about Modeling & Simulation ? or Is there any other way to do modeling & simulation. Google it ! and try to get the difference between Causal Vs. Acausal Modeling.
- Google and try to find out what is Modelica?

Examples of few Academic Communities:

1. CATIA V5 and V6 : Visit 3DS Academy at http://academy.3ds.com/
2. Reliability : Learn about reliability. You can also download FREE MTBF Calculator (Reliability Software) at http://aldservice.com/en/reliability-software/free-mtbf-calculator.html
3. MATLAB : Visit http://www.mathworks.in/academia/
4. Modeling & Simulation : http://academy.3ds.com/software/other-products/dymola/
5. FEA Software : http://academy.3ds.com/software/simulia/abaqus-student-edition/
6. ANSYS : http://www.ansys.com/Industries/Academic

All you need to have is a dedication.

Dedication about spending two hours daily online to learn and to stay yourself updated about the latest technology. It will not only help you to get updated but will also help you to connect with industry experts worldwide. In fact you could also reference your project and showcase it to the world, invite others to join your project and even find sponsors for your project.
This project work will also help you to do the facial of your resume which indeed will help in million ways at the time of interview.

In short, It's better to learn these software online rather than finding out a good training center in your community.

Happy Learning !

What the avionics industry wants?

"Most recent graduates do not know what industry is looking for!" This is how it all started.

Mr. Rajesh Chaubey was recounting his recent interview experiences with the Alumnus of AeSI. He is an avionics specialist employed at Honeywell with 10+ years of experience.

In the interviews, either the graduates were aeronautical graduates or software programmers. But none had the combinational skills that the avionics industry needs.

So the seeds of the lecture series and industrial tour were sowed.

The avionics and lecture series is an attempt to reconnect avionics in industry to the avionics students and graduates of aesi.

There is more to avionics than DO-178 etc.

So if you are an avionics graduate or are doing section b in avionics stream, don't miss this opportunity. The opportunity to hear from an avionics expert an what the avionics industry wants.

Register now by filling the form at this location.

What you should do in Section-B (Avionics) which you don’t know.

I came across many situations where AeSI recent graduates have to walk together with the engineering graduates of Electronics background in order to get selected in an interview. I know it is damn difficult but not impossible. The fact remains the same that many Avionics engineers are working as an Embedded Software/Hardware engineer. Henceforth it is very much essential to learn the basics of various safety, security and mission critical standards, software and hardware. Unfortunately it is not a module of your Section-B syllabus however by spending few hours a week; one can certainly assure that he gets a job after completing his engineering degree.

Case study: I have recently joined a company where it is very much essential to know the basics of reliability, availability, maintainability and safety. I certainly wasn’t aware about these terminologies hence I have started taking advantage of social media. I have downloaded certain videos from YouTube on reliability basics and then I have downloaded couple of white papers about various methods of reliability predictions. No doubt, I wasn’t able to grab all things in one time but I certainly have learned new things. One should always remember that learning is an ongoing process.
I strongly recommend you to learn the basics of following modules before you start job hunting:
-
  1. Requirements Engineering: Learn the basics of requirements engineering.
  2. Design, Modeling and Simulation basics: You can learn many things at Mathworks website.
  3. You have C, C++ as a module in Microprocessor & Software Engineering subject of Section-A. However getting is the right answer can never make you a good programmer. It is very much essential that you should know the art of writing software code. MISRA – C, C++ can help you in doing the same. There are various technical FAQ and discussion threads available on official website of MISRA.
  4. Basics of Software Testing. Specially modules like static analysis, unit testing, code coverage.
  5. Basics of In Circuit Emulators and hardware debuggers.
  6. Reliability Prediction standards such as MIL-HDBK-217, NPRD 95, etc.  How organizations predict reliability and do impact analysis. Google modules like Fault Tree Analysis, Reliability Block Diagrams, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, etc.
  7. Hardware Debuggers
  8. Basics of compilers, IDE, RTOS, middleware, etc.
I know that being a student, it is very difficult to learn these many things but if you know at least the basics so I am sure that nobody can stop you in getting a good job.

Start asking “W” questions like
What is it?
Why is it used?
What are the methods?
Which companies are the best in each area?
How the knowledge of it can help me in my career?
& many more.

Happy Learning! Please let us know if you require any additional support or information from our side. You may mail your queries as a comment below.

Cheers!

Getting Off the Ground

As an aspiring aeronautical engineer, you might already know this.

Getting off the ground is lot harder than flying.

Takeoff needs more power than cruise.

So why forget this while applying for a job, attending an interview or working on your academic projects.

These are the initial takeoff stage. Push the throttle to the max, apply yourself and give more than 100%.

How to prepare for M.S. interview…?

Firstly I would like to congratulate to everyone who had received interview call letter for M.S.(By research ) from IIT Madras…..As you had already received call letter for interview that means 50 % of selection is in your favour ,now to make 50 to 100 % you have to prepare nicely for the interview.

Unless in the case of M.Tech. Where admission solely depends upon your GATE rank rather than your interview , M.S. is the case where interview matters the most .So here it goes,

Tip 1: 1st make up your mind , In which specialization you want to work weather its structure, fluid, propulsion.

Tip 2 : Go through all the basics of the specialization .for example : if you wish to do MS from thermal than you must be well in 1st law,S.F.E.E.(steady flow energy equation) and its application,2nd law,3rd law, what is Cp,what is Cv,unit of Cp.This simple simple thing matters the most…..all they want to know is your basics is right or not ……for fluid : study continuity equation, momentum equation ,energy equation, bernoulli's equation ,fluid statics ,kinematics and dynamics .again MAKE YOUR BASICS CLEAR.

Tip 3 : If you don't know anything which they had asked ,tell them frankly that you don't know or you had studied but you are not getting it right now…..DON'T TRY TO MAKE THEM FOOL BY GIVING RANDOM ANSWER by this way you are just decreasing your chances of selection .

Tip 4 : Don't feel nervous for the interview .they all will make you friendly by asking some personal questions .

Tip 5 : In case you get stuck ,while you are giving answer they may help you by suggesting some things so keep your ears open and listen to each and every word they are saying attentively .you can also ask for their help ….

Hope it had helped you to get some insights of the interview.
If you had another question than feel free to ask me…

Thanks,

Modi Pritesh

It's not just your talent........ Interview Tip

Getting a job isn't just a function of your talent and skills. It depends on one more important thing. It's your attitude.

An interview actually isn't there to measure or ascertain your skills, experience or knowledge, but interview is a silent assessment of your attitude. In the sidelines, it measure what's your attitude? Are you positive or negative person? Is he/she adaptable? Etc.

And it's not just me, even the marketing genius Seth Godin says getting a new hire is actually a hunt for attitude and not talent.

…it's not really a search for talent. It's a search for attitudeThere are a few jobs where straight up skills are all we ask for. Perhaps in the first violinist in a string quartet. But in fact, even there, what actually separates winners from losers isn't talent, it's attitude.

Remember this whenever you are attending an interview, be it on telephone or in person.

It's a Showroom not a Warehouse!

Continuing with the last posts theme on the résumé; when writing or updating your résumé, always keep the title of this post in mind.

Yes. Your résumé should be the showroom of your talent, knowledge and experience. It's shouldn't be a warehouse where you have dumped all your projects, the subjects you have studied and everything in between.

The art of getting an interview call is an effective résumé. A résumé that invites a call for more interaction. So trim those extra, non relevant projects, those extra subject information or the trainings.

Just like a showroom, keep only the stuff that's in demand or in season. Keep the rest out.

Treat your résumé as a showroom than a warehouse and you increase your chances of getting a call for interview.

Double your chances of getting a call for interview!!

I have seen this in more than enough resume that now it's a rule that one must follow if he/she wants to receive an interview call by sending a resume to a requirement.

Send your resume in doc format. When a resume is asked. Send it in the most used format for resume. The word doc format. Not in pdf or any other fancy stuff.

In PDF it might look good or it's un modifiable. But at the same time, it's going against the filing or the usual HR's program's or macros.

Most of the HR systems are geared and automated to filter and find the relevant resumes out of the thousands they receive. And if your résumé isn't in the standard format and file type, it will be skipped. They are not going to customise their systems because of one resume.

So until the time, PDF resumes are a norm, stick to the standard doc format, you will double your chances of getting a call for interview!!

Send a Resume But Don't Insult.

I am sure, 15 year ago, Sam was a smart boy.

He knew that he won't get the bat he wants to buy if he just blurts out the demand when his dad, tired from work, comes home. He knew he had to be patient, observe and judge his dad's mood. He had to be obedient and make sure he is on his best behaviour before the demand is blurted out to dad.

He was smart to engage his mother and persude her to be on her side, to push for him. And he knew if he played his timing right, dad will buy the bat for him.

Now 15 years hence, where is this common sense gone? When someone informs you that there is a requirement for a graduate of avionics, you don't think and just shoot that resume sitting on the desktop without a thought.

Many a resumes go unnoticed and uncalled for just because of this unprofessional approach. What message does this convey? Technically competent guy but such utter lack of professionalism in sending resume.

If you are referred to send a resume, at least think of the person who is receiving it, to forward to his or her HR department. Can your resume can be forwarded just as you presented? Does it has the relevance to match the requirement, and the format and content to stand out?

If this were happening 5 years back, when internet was expensive and uncommon, and only resume writing advice was available in some obscure magazine article or some books, then that was a different matter. But now when the world is connected, a resume is just a google search away and you have the means to research the company you are applying for, a thoughtless resume is no longer acceptable. Its an insult.

So my advice to Sam, Please bring back your smartness. You knew how to get that bat from your dad. Apply the same common sense to get that interview call.

Here's some advice on crafting a resume or Sending a proper resume. If you are graduating in near future, please read this few articles. They will serve you well.

Messy and haphazard

"..... life is messy and haphazard, full of quirky contingencies, unexpected bifurcations, serendipitous discoveries, unanticipated encounters, and unpredictable outcomes"

This is an expert from the book I am reading. The believing brain.

It's so true for a career path too. The career path you imagine and you take always do not follow a linear curve.

There will always be unexpected bifurcations like choosing one stream over other, serendipitous discovery of your own programming skills and unanticipated interview calls put in the industry.

So how to make sure that you are making the best of this fact. Well plan ahead but don't over plan. Keep the destination but allow the randomness to define the course.

If you are in section a, best advice is explore everything. If you are in section b, the advice is build an asset. Learn something and share it. If you are in your first job or in training, learn to say yes with new opportunity that come your way.

Skills Development !

Greetings,
Today I read a very nice article in a local newspaper and I'm sure it's going to help us henceforth I'm sharing the conclusion of it here...

There are two ways to get a job

1. Make a very impressive resume in order to ensure that you receive an interview call.
2. Develop skills & apply

Second option sounds difficult but it helps a lot in the long run. I do agree that degree matters a lot however most of the companies give importance to talent.

Here I would like to relate the above said facts with AeSI's life....

I've seen many students in frustration & tension because of having marks less than 60%. I know that 60% matters a lot however it doesn't mean that if you have marks below 60% so you can't do anything in your life. Where there's a will, there's a way and taking tension about marks can never solve your problems.

Let's try the second approach this time

1. Develop skills e.g. software related to your industry.
2. Join Social Networks like LinkedIn.
3. Join groups related to the technology in which you are interested.
4. Be silent and just observe, what people are talking in such groups? What are the real time problems? And what are the solutions?
5. Learn new things every day because every day is a new day in life.
6. Once you feel that you're good in technology, start to post comments, take part in group conversation.

Benefit: There might be few recruiting managers who can recruit you or there might be any technical manager or project leader who can refer you in their companies. Trust me this approach is very effective.

Let's discuss!
