Announcing "Aero Club"

Yesterday yet again, a relevant discussion happened on our whatsapp group Aero club. And it again gave a satisfaction of being the admin of group and that group is serving  its purpose. It's been 1 and half year and honestly I had no clue that this group will last long. With I guess some 10-15 of my friends on what's app I started this group with idea of discussing issues of society, sharing notifications regarding jobs, technical events, internship, etc. And important news related to aerospace field.
I believed that we people of AeSI can actually help each other sharing such important things and can actually resolve many of the problems that we are facing and can work on bringing change which we want. And for that we need unity.

And So I started this group and started sharing everything that I felt relevant for society people, and yes it benefited all of us in group. In fact, last year mr. Rahul Verma send an application to society for improving the quality of marksheet. We made it success. Group has got us support from many of them.
And there today this group has 60+ ppl. I am amazed. And I am happy, something I started and got support of friends and that helped me and many of U in the group, directly or indirectly. I thank one and all for this trust and integrity. Now I am thinking to expand this group and so here is the announcement.

Dear AeSI Students/Graduates,

If you aim to explore the area ( eg FEM, CFD etc) in which you wish to pursue your career you may try your hand at CSRP.

It costs nothing except your time & commitment.

If you are ready to go extra mile, extra efforts are needed.

At the end of this exercise you are able  to publish a paper, or
make a good repo with mentor, or got to know your mentor very well, or
know about industrial practices through informal discussions, or have an accurate view of the kind of work usually done in the industry

Under CSRP, You are ready with something instead of nothing when you graduate.

Also your mentor would be ready to write something once he works with you. A good LOR means a ticket to reputed universities. Our association for learning should continue. Getting degree is only beginnings, we have to travel more. Please pass to all in your amaesi circle.

AeSI AMAeSI Results and some questions

As soon as I saw Himalya post announcing the AESI results, I downloaded the pdf of results. Seeing the numbers, the statistician in me was not able to resist playing with that data.

So with few tinkering and re grouping, I  tried answering these following questions i had in mind looking at the data.

1. What is the highest no Pass in any subject in section A and B?
2. What are the top 3 top scoring subjects in Section A ?
3. What are the top 3 top scoring subjects in Section B ?
4. What are the top 3 low scoring subject in Section A ?
5. What are the top 3 low scoring subject in Section B ?
6. Avionic 1 or 2 which one is more scoring?
7. Propulsion 1 or Propulsion 2 which one scores more ?
8. Which elective subject is most and least scoring?
9. What are the top scores of each subject?
10. Which subject gets most borderline score in section A/Section B ?
11. Which subjects are easy and scoring?

Before you look at the data, some usage explanation.

• Max Mark is maximum marks score in that subject
• 75% got this means that 75% of the students who appeared in that paper scored more than this.
• % of 50 represents the percentage of students of total appeared who got just 50, the minimum score to pass.
• No of pass is the number of students who cleared the subject.

Silent Killing Of An Engineer And Baking Cakes

I received this following late night email. It was a long email, i have truncated it for privacy reasons.

Reading this i felt sad. But the point raised in this rant email were very genuine. Before we go forward, please read the following.

It's been more than 60 days, I'm sending my resume to different companies, approaching various project managers and business leaders of aviation & aerospace industry. I used to ask my friends who are recruiter in various companies about my resume and seek advise for modification to attract. I've used the all available sources like the recommendation letter, power of written communication and a lot........... Finally at last it's what I call the silent killing of engineering attitude and an engineer. I am still up because someone says that winners don't quit and Quitters don't win but each day I go to bed, I used to cry and pillow becomes wet because of the limit of my patience.

I think this is an universal stage that all AeSI graduates, no almost all graduates pass through. The stage when resumes do not fetch interviews and networking never pays.

After being in the industry, i have these following suggestions to everyone currently in this state.

1. Keep working. Career building is a marathon and not a quick sprint. Your career is like a train. You cant run it on a paved road, it needs tracks and they take time to show up. 60 days is not long enough.

2. In the beginning, it pays to be an aircraft than a rocket. Taxing on the runway is must. Rockets just dont last after their initial thrusts. Go slow. Build up the speed than shooting straight.

3. If a resume isnt working. Sleep on it. Change it. It might be missing the hook.

4. Build demonstrated skills. Skills that can be demoed. Skills that are out there on internet, for anyone to verify and check. Skills that make you stand out.

5. The greatest thing a graduate can do at this time is to build his or her skills. Aim to be the best in your domain. The most important component to skill building is putting the time to learn your craft. Unless you do that its near impossible to shine.

I am learning to bake cakes and i have ruined so many cakes in the process. My major mistake is taking out the cake too early. Not respecting the baking time.

Building a career and getting it on track is similar. You need that baking time.

Section A and exams

Just read himalya's post on my aesi, i was noding my head reading his advice on what to do in section a.

Totally agree with him, section a is for studies, concentrate on your studies and nothing else.

Explore everything but focus on studies. As exams are nearing, dont just aim to pass, aim to shoot higher!

Good luck everyone for your exams. Work hard and smart, thats the only way to crack aesi!!

Qualification Vs Knowledge !!

Just study and leave everything else

He has a great point. I dont believe in just work and no play.

In fact this is how I got into starting this blog and ouraesi club back in 2002.


My long stated opinion on this blog is that when you are in section a, you shouldn't think much about job and after aesi, but concentrate on your studies and use your spare time to explore whatever takes fancy to your mind at that time.

It may be kite making, taking cooking lessons, creating aircraft models, singing, dancing etc. The point is, section a give you time to expand your horizon. Gives you opportunity to grow laterally. So do that. It's the time to experiment.

I certainly did that.

As you pass section a, you get into the grove and start to know what you enjoyed and loved. This is the time to take up serious career related things. This is time to look beyond aesi and see what is on demand and what skills you want to build.

I certainly did this. I like programming and this is what I took up in section b. If you like analysis or building models or reading. Begin those tasks.

The tasks are not that important. Decide what skills you want to have when you graduate and start working on them.

How much time you spend is not important. More important is the consistenty. Put in your minimum hours in those skill building exercise and you are on to a great start.

So what's your take on this? Let's come up with activities and things that one can do in this period.

I am stuck in the same AeSI subject, what should i do?

Saw this email from an AeSI student.

afraid if i m to stuck in SecA due to that paper only. so i need ur urgent help regarding which books to follow that adheres to the question pattern so that i can at least pass the exam. its my 3rd year running..and i have no time. "

My first comment to him will be, go to a quite place, have some time and brainstorm what is it that he is getting wrong?

Keep AeSI out of the blame game and think hard on what can be your faults.

Just write out wherever comes to the mind. Don't judge. Keep thinking and pushing yourself for the reason on what is going wrong. Think back to all exams and find the causes.


Once you have number of causes, you will definitely begin seeing a pattern emerging. Now is the judging time. Find the main reasons that you see now.

Is is the lack of your understanding of the subject? Or is it your lack of expressing it in the exams. Or is it a combination of both?

You can fail in the exams only for two reasons, either you lack understanding of the subject or the understanding is not expressed well in the exam papers.


Find the reason and implement steps in your study routine to eliminate it.

Why I don't pass a subject in AeSI?

I don't know. But let's me share what I did when I didn't pass.

After blasting aesi for the result, I usually turned to my own short coming.

And to my surprise I always found that there were some things that I would have done better. I was never able to outrightly blame aesi for my failure. A shadow of doubt always remained that I had lacked somewhere. I missed something.

But the act of thinking back and trying to ascertain the reason of my failure surely helped me see the cracks in my own study system. I learnt from them and finally I did pass those subjects.

So all I can suggest you guys and gals is once the amaesi aesi results are in. Take stock on what you did right and what went wrong? Why you failed? What you did in your passing subject and what you didn't in the failed subject?

An hour of this can go a long way in improving your studies.

How to pass AeSI papers? - open question to all

Just received a distraught and passionate mail from a section a
student. He said aesi examination question pattern isn't suited for
Indian environment. He argued that instead of subjective paper, Aesi
papers should be objective. He also doubted that there is something
wrong in the the checking of aesi answer sheets.

Well I have to admit, many students including myself have doubted the
checking system of answer sheets by AeSI. At some point of time, we
have wondered what happened to our marks when we were sure we have
done a great job in the examination hall.

I guess the reason for this doubt is the opaque wall that aesi has
put. We don't have access to the checked papers and this non
transparency raises out doubts, which are magnified when we get bad
results.

Now when I look back at those semesters where I felt Mr Goyal had some
evil hand in failing me, I think somewhere I was also responsible.

Examinations are not about telling what you know. It's about giving
relevant answers to the questions asked. It's not about spilling
whatever you know, on paper, but giving the right and accurate
information required by the question.

Brief and to the point answers are Indicators of your understanding of
the question.

Well these topic is open to lot of discussions, so I open this

Is it mandatory to pass AeSI with 60%?

A few days back I got this email from someone whom I will call Mr. R

"Is it mandatory to pass ae.s.i with 60% of marks in total to secure a
job.....i am really in frustration as i am passing paper smoothly but
fail to get 60% marks or above in every subject......pls pls pls help
me!!! "

Here's my reply.

Hi R

60% is like a lubricant. If you have it, it will be great. If you don't, then don't worry much about it.

60% is the threshold for govt jobs and having it adds confidence in your resume.

So if you are falling short on the percentage, please concentrate on increasing your confidence with other means like supercharging your skills, or by becoming a good communicator.

There are two ways you can react now?
Go crazy and mad about aesi or understand that 60% helps but life doesn't stop if you don't have it.

5 tips on fruitful training - do this and you won...

Many who read this blog are in the training stage of your AeSI journey. I have been there and fortunately with some good friends and exceptional mentor, I had good time there.

Not only the time was good, but I enjoyed the first flavor of work life and immensely polished my skills and knowledge.

Here are 5 tips from that experience that you should incorporate in your mindset to have fruitful training.

1. Know why you are there.
Yes the beginning is to know, why are you there? What do you want out of this training? What specific skills you want to increase, what knowledge you want to polish? Know this before you get it, and you are half way there.

2. Remind yourself springboards don't help you unless you jump on them
Training by itself won't do anything to you or your career. What you do there and how you do it is what matters most. Going there everyday and wasting time in and around canteen won't accomplish anything. Daily incremental improvements in your abilities and skills is what you should aim at!

3. Technical Skills without communication skills are nothing.
Yes communication skills (oral and written) are everything. Imagine a scale. Put all your technical skills in one basket and communication skills in other, the later will always be heavier for your long term career.

So just don't hunt technical skills, tame the communications skills too.

4. Inertia is not for you. Continue the initial momentum by challenges.
The initial period is great. You are enthusiastic. You get work, you do it happily. But as months pass, the familiarity of the place, task and people builds an inertia and we tend to go on autopilot. Avoid that. Autopilot is for cruise, during takeoff and climb, always have the throttle in your hand!! Challenge yourself and even if the task is old, aim to improve how you deliver it.

5. Keep chipping and Hammering.
Training is not a taxi ride. It's not a bus stop you pass by. It's an opportunity to hone and add skills. So use it like that. It's not a place to come rest and enjoy. It should be a place to come, add and enhance yourself. So keep working on your skills, keep improving till you are out of it.

Dear AeSI Alumnus and Students,

 

It is giving me immense pleasure to share the success story of AeSIAA on the eve of Deepawali. In last one year, with the tremendous efforts of EC members and your support,AeSIAA has become the approved alumni association of the AeSI. Now it is recognized not only by different government aeronautical labs, but also by aerospace MNCs across India. We have now office space in AeSI, Bangalorebranch. We conducted SEMAA-2010 with great success wherein all the problems associated with AeSI graduates and students were understood by Aeronautical fraternity of India and they have assured us all the support at highest level. We are arranging first ever job placement assistance to AeSI fresh graduates (0-2 years) on 13^th Nov. Our website www.aesiaa.org is active and improving day-by-day.

 

AeSIAA is also organizing a glider design competition, SOARING very soon. We are in the process of forming an aero modeling club for the hobby flyers. As our commitment towards community services, we are planning an event in Dec'10 wherein AeSIAA members with their family will spend half a day with village children and educate them.

 

This AeSIAA office bearer's tenure is ending by March '11. We have to conduct AGM before that and give farewell to all the founder EC members for their great initiatives to shapeAeSIAA to serve you and the aero society at large. Invited talks from India's top aeronautical experts, oppportunity to

Where's the initiative?

A couple of weeks back I posted a status message on a popular social
networking site. "start your small projects".

Many people ignored it, many joked about it and some asked me " what
projects to start?"

I don't have an answer to that question. You see opportunities are
abandant but then we pass them because we don't have initiative.

Here are two simple examples of great opportunities that passed under
your nose. All that was lacking was intitiative from our end.

The contest to design Indian rupee symbol and to become part of
history was open to all, but how many of you submited a design or even
thought about it. The guy who won the prize and a place in history
submitted multiple entries.

So the problem was not opportunity but initiative.

Another example, recently google created a contest " day in your
life". In this on 24th july all you had to do was film a typical day
In your life. Then accomplished directors would have chosen your movie
and created a movie with all the user generated content. The prize was
to have a chance to see this movie premeired and have you name
splashed with some of the welknown folks of the industry.

The idea was simple, opportunity was easy to grab but how many of you
took the initiative.

So the point is, you don't need more opportunity you need initiative!!

And you know what's good about initiative?

Unlike opportunity, you create initiative!!
