As part of my 3 new years goal, i am now testing writing of post via my mobile. In the coming year i intend to post at least one update to this blog everyday, so this post is just to let you know and test my mobile so that lack of net access do not cause any delay or hurdle in my goal. 3 things that AeSI has improved in the year 2008

This year is drawing to an end. How was the year for you? Mine went ok and as far as AeSI is concerned there are this  3 things that AeSI has improved in the year 2008!!

AeSI now has its official new website. Previously it was under NAL but now AeSI’s site is managed more professionally.  In case you don’t know it yet the old www.aesi.org site is now www.aerosocietyindia.com,  the official website of the aeronautical society of India.

This year the old syllabus is almost out and new is in. The new syllabus of AeSI looks good on paper but only the students studying them will have the real feedback how is it on the field.

3rd change as Bishnujee ji has informed is the Accreditation that AeSI degree has got. Here is what he said. AeSI degree is not only equivalent to BSc in aerospace but its BSc(honours)! Many thanks to Bishnujee for all the efforts he is taking in this regards.

AeSI is definitely changing. I am not as attached to AeSI as I was a couple of years ago and this limits my comment on this subject. I know many of you are more involved and you have more knowledge about this so feel free to tell me in the comments.

Biggest Full Moon of the Year

No, you can not see Neil Armstrong's footprint. But go ahead and look: The full Moon of Dec. 12th is the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year.

It's no illusion. Some full Moons are genuinely larger than others and this Friday's is a whopper. Why? The Moon's orbit is an ellipse with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other: diagram. In the language of astronomy, the two extremes are called "apogee" (far away) and "perigee" (nearby). On Dec. 12th, the Moon becomes full a scant 4 hours after reaching perigee, making it 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we've seen earlier in 2008.

One important lesson I have learnt from my boss in NAL

When you are learning catia or solidworks or any other CAD or Analysis software... always remember to see the big picture....

That's one important lesson I have learnt from my boss in NAL.

All questions will be answered if you know and see the big picture.

And incidentally this apples not only in learning a particular software but to everything in life. Have a big decision to make move back and see the big picture and you will have the answers to your questions!!

Now what is Vijay Mallya doing in this Blog? What he has to do with AeSI?

As Mr joshi has informed us already, this time AeSI’s AGM will be held in New Delhi.. what is the new thing that is going to happen. I guess nothing. I hope the AeSI alumni will be formed if things go right.

Apart from this one thing that I am excited about the AeSI AGM this time is about the new President of AeSI. This time it will be no other than Vijay Mallya. I guess in the history of AeSI or in the history of my association with AeSI he is the most flamboyant president that we will have. Yes we had Dr. Abdul Kalam, Madavan Nair and many others but this is the first time that kingfisher chairman will donning the hat.

I don't know how much this be of help to AeSI students and members but its good to know that a person I love to read about and a person who entrails passion and enthusiasm in me is going to be the president of AeSI.

4 things I learnt from debugging

4 things I learnt from the whole debugging process that my friend at the office just went through. He was into it for the last 7 days and has finally got it completed. Here I present 4 things that I learnt from all this process.

1. Don't assume. Don’t assume what the problem is, state it test it and get to the bottom of it. Don’t assume, search for facts. if you have a theory test it than say it. Do more than you think. Think and test. Not think and think.

2. First capture the big picture then delve into the details. Details are important but before going into the the details get the frame ready. see the big picture. Move back and see the whole as a problem. Set your frame right. Determine your north and south then after you have verified that you are heading the right direction then you should fine tune and get into details.

3. Keep your methods right the results will follow. Have your tools ready. Learn and set up the processes rights results will follow. Pause and setup the ground work. If your base is strong enough, things will all fall in place. So do the ground work and see that your preliminary investigation is right and the setup you have setup is based on facts not assumptions.

4. Absorb the problem first before judging or getting into  the detail. Same as the big picture. Absorb the problem than spit out your judgment. Spend time understanding the problem. Don’t state your opinions. its better to test them. Leave the judging to the judges… you just carry on small tests and experiments and draw conclusions from them.  Test everything don’t assume.

Bonus : Use bubble sort method to solve problems. From big to small. Eliminate from Big to small. More on this sometimes latter

Well this were some of things that came to mind as I saw my friend at the office finally crack the debugging nut that he was given. He was pleased and I thing many of this approach we can use to solve many of our problems.

4 tips for handling exam anxiety during the examination

AMAeSI exams are here and here is some of things that I did in my exam time. All of this has helped me in my exams. Hope they will help you too.

Don't get excited. Keep things calm. If the paper is good don't jump. Calmly begin answering. If questions seem to come out of mars don't panic and revolve your eyes in the examination hall. Be calm take deep breath and attempt the next question that you know.

If you get stuck. Pause and then think hard. If this works, good if it doesn't, don't push yourself hard. Pause… leave some space and carry on with the next section or question... this usually does the trick for me. Down the line I used to get a hint of the question I was stuck and I came back to it.

Keep a close watch on time but don't be too tight on it. Time not one question but take a more general approach. Instead of saying “I will answer 1 questions in 20 minutes!!” Define “I will cover 3 questions in an hour.” This works more than keeping a question wise timing. Some questions might take  long while some less time but you should put 1 hr 3 questions as your time target. This enables you not to look at time very often.

Lastly in all examination paper do keep last 30 mins for revision. its must!!

How to revise.

Put the answer sheet back. take the question paper read the questions you attempted and formulate point wise answers. After you covered all question check and optimise any of the answers you might have discovered while revising.

Inertia

Inertia!  Newton's first law has taken over my life! its what keeping me off from posting.

its not that i don't have topics to write or internet connection.... all this inactivity boils down to one word, inertia.

If Newton has to be believed I need an external force to shake this off.

While I look for that external force you guys and gal enjoy and here's wishing all students of AeSI who are giving exams best of luck!!!!

A while back someone asked me this question why do I write on this blog? Why do I spend my spare time on this blog. Why?

Well that night I made an entry in my diary and here's part of the responses that I wrote in it

I write because it gives me an opportunity to put back to the AeSI community that has give me  so much
I write because if someone has really genuine concern on AeSI, he is not left behind

I write because I like helping others
I write because I have time and want to utilize it properly
I write because I hope I am making a difference.
