5 Master Tips for Effective Interview

Interview by listening this word many of us get scared....Aren't you...?

Interview is not a only one way process .It's a two way process...There is nothing to get scared ..its just like a formal talk which we have to do with official person.

It's does not matter weather you are having interview for job ,for relation ship or for anything but there are several things which holds good for all.

So here it goes,
  1. Before going to interview make some homework .in case you are going for job interview have a look on company website,if it is for relation than look on social media sites this will give you many idea about the insight of the person/organization.
  2. 1st check it out what you had mentioned in your resume ,CV or bio data. maximum of the question will be asked from that only.so be confident what you are providing .
  3. Don't only just listen and answer .Take active part in the conversation .It's not like that you have to satisfy their criteria but your should also be comfortable with the way they work.the way they treat their employees .ask about anything whatever you want to know .If you ask question based upon your research ,they will feel that you are really very serious as well as interested and you got a plus point over other candidates.
  4. after having interview thank them honestly .
  5. send them a hand written thank you note and also do mention that what you like the most in conversation .
If you have any other tips than please share with us in comment section.

Thanks for reading.

Why a Free Python Workshop for AeSI

Someone whom I shall call Mr Z, emailed me his profile. I saw the attached resume and realised, he is mint fresh from AeSI. So kept his resume with a mind of asking his resume after another 3 months so i can forward it to my contacts for any opportunity.

After, 3 months, emailed Mr Z to resend me his updated resume and I got a resume, which had some little formatting changes but none other changes. On enquiry he responded he is learning a design software and didn't put it there.

3 Months without a skill added astounded me!

I don't know about now, but when I was in this stage this was my rapid skill adoption period. What's the new norm now, i wondered?

Credit to Mr Z, he was not sitting ideal, but the velocity of skill gain is slow for the time we live in.

And another thing to note was the focus on only one skill. Well design is what he wants, that is great but this isn't a transferable skill. This skill takes time and is specific to a particular kind of work. So along with this technical skill he needs to think about building some transferrable skills, like speaking, writing, presentation skills, general programming or mastering common office tools.

Technical skills are like screw drivers, just meant for screws, while transferrable skills are like knife, more general and have wide applicability. This gap in the knowledge of the transferrable skills led me to launch the free python workshop for AeSI.

Python is powerful general purpose language and I think every person who calls him an engineer should know this. Weather you work in design, analysis or performance, skills in one programming language can take you a long way.

VBA, C, Fortran are good start but knowing python as the language will have wide advantages. Its cross platform and its batteries included nature, gives you lot from a little effort.

And as far as a transferable skill is concerned, it can fit any job or task that you might encounter in your work and non-work life.

So that's the intention of the Free Python Workshop. A getting started in Python so as to equip AeSI students and graduates a lifelong transferable skill that can be applied in all the jobs

So if Mr. Z is reading this, pleases register, you are the reason for the workshop.

Please visit the page http://sukhbinder.wordpress.com/workshop for the brief writeup on the workshop and to http://python4aesi.doattend.com for registering for the workshop!

Few points on sending resumes for AeSI grads

Have you sent your resume for the contract engineer in DRDL/DRDO?

Many resumes were sent and one of the résumés and cover letter that got the maximum reaction had all the classic mistakes that we have been talking about In this blog.

Here are some general common sense suggestions for the sending and responding to such requirements.

1. First of all be professional.  If someone is soliciting resumes, he or she is doing a favour for fellow aesi students.  Don't dis respect that. Be courteous and professional.

2. Send a well crafted, requirement centric résumé. Not something generic. Work on the résumé and send something that states your value toward that particular requirement.

3. Don't state your percentage in the résumé unless its specifically asked for.   This one is applicable specially for AeSI grads. 60%, 68% might look good if its compared only with aesi but when you are competing with other engineering grads, this numbers don't really help.  So swallow that pride and keep them as need to know basis.

4. As I said earlier on this blog, no one owes you a job, you have to earn it. And the best way to earn is by showcasing your value through skills and knowledge. The degree you have gives you a foot at the door into the corporate world. But it's your skills and application of knowledge that actually gets you to the finish line.

5. One year experience and working somewhere for a year or less doesn't make you an expert. Remember this. Unless you have worked on similar work for more than 3+ years, don't boast of expertise.

Remember this next time you are sending a résumé.

FAQ : What should I do after AeSI exams ?

One of the most frequently asked question among AeSI Graduates is:

- What should I do after AeSI exams?

Though there are many posts in this group which can help you to get the answer of above question. However based on my industry experience, I would like to bring one very important point in everybody's kind considerations.

Yesterday somebody was asking me where should I go to learn Modeling & Simulation.

- My answer is why do you want to go anywhere and invest your money when everything is available online.
- Take an example of MATLAB : There are so many video tutorials available which certainly are created to meet the requirements of students. Why don't you start spending one hour daily on learning MATLAB from such tutorials. Even you can download the trial version of such software.
- Most of such software organizations also develop their academic communities. Attend those communities and start discussing your projects worldwide.
- BUT does MATLAB means all about Modeling & Simulation ? or Is there any other way to do modeling & simulation. Google it ! and try to get the difference between Causal Vs. Acausal Modeling.
- Google and try to find out what is Modelica?

Examples of few Academic Communities:

1. CATIA V5 and V6 : Visit 3DS Academy at http://academy.3ds.com/
2. Reliability : Learn about reliability. You can also download FREE MTBF Calculator (Reliability Software) at http://aldservice.com/en/reliability-software/free-mtbf-calculator.html
3. MATLAB : Visit http://www.mathworks.in/academia/
4. Modeling & Simulation : http://academy.3ds.com/software/other-products/dymola/
5. FEA Software : http://academy.3ds.com/software/simulia/abaqus-student-edition/
6. ANSYS : http://www.ansys.com/Industries/Academic

All you need to have is a dedication.

Dedication about spending two hours daily online to learn and to stay yourself updated about the latest technology. It will not only help you to get updated but will also help you to connect with industry experts worldwide. In fact you could also reference your project and showcase it to the world, invite others to join your project and even find sponsors for your project.
This project work will also help you to do the facial of your resume which indeed will help in million ways at the time of interview.

In short, It's better to learn these software online rather than finding out a good training center in your community.

Happy Learning !

Double your chances of getting a call for interview!!

I have seen this in more than enough resume that now it's a rule that one must follow if he/she wants to receive an interview call by sending a resume to a requirement.

Send your resume in doc format. When a resume is asked. Send it in the most used format for resume. The word doc format. Not in pdf or any other fancy stuff.

In PDF it might look good or it's un modifiable. But at the same time, it's going against the filing or the usual HR's program's or macros.

Most of the HR systems are geared and automated to filter and find the relevant resumes out of the thousands they receive. And if your résumé isn't in the standard format and file type, it will be skipped. They are not going to customise their systems because of one resume.

So until the time, PDF resumes are a norm, stick to the standard doc format, you will double your chances of getting a call for interview!!

Send a Resume But Don't Insult.

I am sure, 15 year ago, Sam was a smart boy.

He knew that he won't get the bat he wants to buy if he just blurts out the demand when his dad, tired from work, comes home. He knew he had to be patient, observe and judge his dad's mood. He had to be obedient and make sure he is on his best behaviour before the demand is blurted out to dad.

He was smart to engage his mother and persude her to be on her side, to push for him. And he knew if he played his timing right, dad will buy the bat for him.

Now 15 years hence, where is this common sense gone? When someone informs you that there is a requirement for a graduate of avionics, you don't think and just shoot that resume sitting on the desktop without a thought.

Many a resumes go unnoticed and uncalled for just because of this unprofessional approach. What message does this convey? Technically competent guy but such utter lack of professionalism in sending resume.

If you are referred to send a resume, at least think of the person who is receiving it, to forward to his or her HR department. Can your resume can be forwarded just as you presented? Does it has the relevance to match the requirement, and the format and content to stand out?

If this were happening 5 years back, when internet was expensive and uncommon, and only resume writing advice was available in some obscure magazine article or some books, then that was a different matter. But now when the world is connected, a resume is just a google search away and you have the means to research the company you are applying for, a thoughtless resume is no longer acceptable. Its an insult.

So my advice to Sam, Please bring back your smartness. You knew how to get that bat from your dad. Apply the same common sense to get that interview call.

Here's some advice on crafting a resume or Sending a proper resume. If you are graduating in near future, please read this few articles. They will serve you well.

Skills Development !

Greetings,
Today I read a very nice article in a local newspaper and I'm sure it's going to help us henceforth I'm sharing the conclusion of it here...

There are two ways to get a job

1. Make a very impressive resume in order to ensure that you receive an interview call.
2. Develop skills & apply

Second option sounds difficult but it helps a lot in the long run. I do agree that degree matters a lot however most of the companies give importance to talent.

Here I would like to relate the above said facts with AeSI's life....

I've seen many students in frustration & tension because of having marks less than 60%. I know that 60% matters a lot however it doesn't mean that if you have marks below 60% so you can't do anything in your life. Where there's a will, there's a way and taking tension about marks can never solve your problems.

Let's try the second approach this time

1. Develop skills e.g. software related to your industry.
2. Join Social Networks like LinkedIn.
3. Join groups related to the technology in which you are interested.
4. Be silent and just observe, what people are talking in such groups? What are the real time problems? And what are the solutions?
5. Learn new things every day because every day is a new day in life.
6. Once you feel that you're good in technology, start to post comments, take part in group conversation.

Benefit: There might be few recruiting managers who can recruit you or there might be any technical manager or project leader who can refer you in their companies. Trust me this approach is very effective.

Let's discuss!

Chop that resume...

The most important tasks for a resume is to make a good impression and to keep the mystery alive enough to get you a call for interview.

Don't reveal all in the resume. Keep something for the actual play. Insert keyword but leave out the details. Paint the picture but don't reveal the entire canvas.

Entice the reader to get to call you. The best resume is the one that elicits "interesting" in the mind of the reader while reading it.

So what are you waiting. chop your resume. Spice it with relevant keywords aimed at the specific requirements and wait for the telephone interview call.

Attractive Resume - Tips from the Horses Mouth.

Someone just sent me this tips that were sent to him by some recruitment consultant. These tips on resumes building come direct from horses mouth. They do it for a living, and it pays to keep them in mind next time you are mending your resume.

Any resume needs to be written in such a way that it can attract your potential employer. So, if you are in search of a job of your dream, you need to be very careful while forming an appropriate and attractive resume that can catch the attention of your potential employer in not more that 60 seconds. Take a look at the following ‘keywords’:

a) Use the word “Successfully”:
Every potential employer likes to hear or see the word “Success” in a resume or during the job interview. So, while highlighting your skills, it is better to use the word “I successfully…” in describing your achievements and responsibilities.
b) Use the word “I applied”:
Using the word “applied” in your resume can describe your working nature and skills. But the point to be noted here is, using the word “applied” shouldn’t mean, why you have applied for that post. Instead the word “Applied” should be used to describe your skills.
c) Use the word “Team Player”:
In a resume you need to use the word ‘team player’, while describing yourself as a person who is very communicative and enjoy working in a team. If you use this word in an appropriate way in your resume, your recruiters will get the feeling that you are a good team player, who doesn’t have any problem working in a team. This particular word will also describe that you are very good in interacting with others.
d) About your past “Achievements”
As every employer likes to analyze your past performances, you can highlight your past achievements in point wise. It doesn’t have to be your past performance only in your professional life, as you can also list out something if you would have achieved something really worthy in your academic life or your personal life which can be shared in your list of achievements till date.

A new story

A-new-story

Once someone makes a decision about your resume, it's almost impossible for you to persuade them that they were wrong. No amount of persuasion can make them change their opinion.

The alternative and the opportunity that you have is to encourage the non supporter to look at new information and make a new decision. Give them a new angle to look at you. A new perspective. A new you. A new story.
