Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?

He is a short guy, really short one, someone call him baccha. and whenever I meet him he always asks me "Bhaiya how do I study propulsion 1?" he has asked me a lot of times, the first time I said study as usual. But now his perpetual question has not been answered so I thought to pen all I know about this topic.


So how did I studied propulsion 1, joining class is a very good point to start. This not only helps in better preparation but gives you consistency and you are always in touch with the subject.

Propulsion I is divided into two sharp edges and that is numerical and theory and thank god the theory is simple and not like propulsion 3 where you have to think and give answer. Here the answers and theory is straight forward. Just give out what is being asked.

So as I said numerical are must in p1 and for that if you are studying in GIE and have access to Mathur and sharma is must. Most of the questions are based on this book and this books covers all the topics And if you are in Mr. Natarajan sir's class you will have ample opportunity in solving this numerical and that too with all of the class. Its nice doing that. One more perk of p1 class in my time was the whole night shift class!!! It was great!!!


Tips on p1:

1. Read all the topics. Bring out the syllabus book and do all the topics that had to be done. Don't leave a thing. One thing you don't get in propulsion 1 paper is lot of options. You have to do 5 out of the 6 questions and leaving a chapter or topic or two can be very risky and as a friend of mine learnt during the last semester when he did left a single chapter and it ruined his above 60 marks!!!

2. Read thoroughly. This will not only equip you to handle all the short type questions but will you better understanding of all the topics as you study them. Everything you will read from the first chapter on basics to the last chapter on lubrication has a link and reading thoroughly will help you understand the salient facts that may go unnoticed if you treat every chapter as an individual unit.

3. This is one of the most important thing that you should do while studying propulsion 1. and this also applies to all the other subjects. Use your imagination to see what you are learning. That is when reading about supercharger and the variables involved see how the variable affect, see how a bigger cylinder will cause more detonation and why air capacity is such and important variable. See it and I know you will have a better and lasting understanding of the subject and will have memorize less things !!

4. As you go through propulsion 1 , you will see there are so many variable as each one affect different parts and things differently and this could become hard to remember but if you imagine and understand the reasons behind the logic once. You can sale through.

5. Fortunately, the topics in propulsion 1 are inter woven and as you progress through your course on propulsion 1you will find it easy to go in chronological order. This will help in better memorization and understanding. For example studying the cc of IC engine is one such topic where a natural progression from detonation to design of SI engine head and then to the design and types of CI head, will be more efficiency than any other way. And this natural progression also has the advantage of quick revision.

6. My biggest mistake was not starting early, So at last I had to prepare some topics quickly and which brought my marks down, but you learn from my mistake. Start early. By this I don't mean not making notes, making notes is no study, memorizing and keeping the things in mind is what I referring to. Prop1 has so many topics and so for a firm grip on all the topics start early, and you won't have to ease through the last topics!!

7. Numerical. Well There are one way of solving the numerical ands that Mr. Natarajan sir teaches very well. Go to the basics and attack the problem. See what is given and what is asked. and answer it. Most of people I see is they refer to the example and try to understand what he is doing. Well all the examples in the books are done in different ways . And I have never followed what they did, I just take the question and solve it the way I know and what eventually matters is the answer and this is what studying in Mr. Natarajan sir's class will teach you!! You will get into this habit of solving with the basics and that I guess is the biggest lesson that one might acquire at a class.'


8. Propulsion 1 diagrams and they are simple and one should draw them neat without much shading and one point to remember is always draw the picture before you explain the thing. This not only helps the paper checker but also helps you to be methodical and you can explain better.


Well as for the baccha, I know he has cleared the propulsion one paper with good marks and all due to his hard work and long hours I heard he put in. Well I don’t know for certain if he is reading or read this but I would certainly like to see a comment or two from him on “Bahaiya How should I study propulsion 1?”

Natarajan sir’s mind boggling answer…

A question asked by student to Natrajan sir after GATE class..
a room is full of oxygen and if i increase the temp of the room ,will oxygen get burned….?
we all know how Natrajan sir makes our doubt clear by giving simple simple example .he explains with such a example that we can not forget for a long time.
bellow is his answer..
see I m a teacher ,i can not teach my self .i need students to teach similarly oxygen is oxidizer it can not be burnt by itself ,it needs fuel to get burnt.

Learning by Osmosis

I am attending a training on iSight. I already know the software and
in the past couple of months i have use it in my day job.

I have read through all the tutorials/documents that I had on this
software. But still I choose to be part of the training. And I am glad
I am doing it. I am learning so much by osmosis!!

The instructer is clearly an expert, 30 years in this domain, he knows
the ins and out of this tool. His slides are preety much the same but
real insights are in his way of explaining.

With the experience behind him, he emphasizes the points of mistakes,
common pitfalls and important places to look for.

Some of his analogies sheds whole new light on your way of seeing the
problem.

I experienced similar thing when I studied for AeSI and always choose
to attend lectures by Natrajan sir and others. Even if I was attending
a seniors extra classes I made it a point that I was also in the class
of a qualified, experienced lecturer for that subject.

Similar insights errupted and foggy understanding cleared as I sat in
those classes. I call this learning by osmosis.

It's like thermodynamics, the higher the temperature gradient, the
better will be the heat transfer. The more experienced the lecturer,
better the knowledge!!

So my advice to anyone in AeSI now is go attend lectures even if you
know the subject. Even if you are taking extra classes from seniors,
go for experienced lecturers. There knowledge, wisdom and experience
will seep through!!

AeSI exams results awaited- few tips for next semester


AeSI results is what all the AeSI students will be waiting for now. And many of you might have begun studying for the next semester. So I thought I will share some of the tips so that the next semester is more fruitful and productive for all of you.


My most productive semesters were the once in which I had made clear cut goals or targets. While in section-B I took up propulsion-1, propulsion-2, propulsion-3 and aerodynamics as my subjects. This were tough subjects and whenever I told the choice of subjects to any of my friends they stared at me and I guess laughed behind my back at my foolishness of taking all the tough and big ones at one go. But my task in that semester was simple. I took the subjects thinking that they will be related and then there was the fact that all of them were to be taught by Mr. Natrajan sir. He is the most productive teacher I have seen in my entire life. I mean he used to come at 7am in morning and then used to continue teaching till 9 in the evening. At tea breaks we always used to wonder from where he gets so much stamina or energy to teach. This is when I challenged myself that if I wanted distraction free study then I need to emulate Natarajan sir and I took all his subjects at one go and I cleared all the four subjects that semester with getting the highest marks in propulsion-3 and aerodynamics!!!


Here I want to tell you 3 things that did the magic for me. I used the word magic because like magic this whole thing can be accomplished by some careful planning and preparation.

1. First and foremost was that I took up the class in GIE and never skipped any of the lectures of Natrajan sir. During that time some bhaiya was also giving propulsion classes and majority of students were enrolled for his tuitions, but I kept my focus on Natrajan sir. Yes he doesn’t cover the entire syllabus and sometime miss some of it but I think knowledge is like energy. My best came from the fact that I took the knowledge from Natrajan sir and not from some bhiya. As thermodynamics teaches us. Energy degrades from one from to other so I wanted the purest and so I stayed with Natrajan sir and it really helped. How? See that particular bhiya also studied from him. But what is the most important thing was he was just imparting the knowledge of propulsion while Natrajan sir, with his years of experience was teaching us the same thing but was also sowing the seeds of problem solving. I will write a separate post of the things AeSI students can learn from Natranjan sir latter some time.

2. Plan your study hours. This is one important step. Plan on the numbers of hours you want to put in everyday for your studies. The no of hours shouldn’t be the maximum that you can give. But they should be the minimum that you pledge yourself that you will be able to give everyday no matter what. In my case I knew with no other things to do I could do 7 hours study easily but then this hours I didn’t knew if the classes and other activities will permit me to have them always. So I gave myself 2 hours everyday. Yes 2 hours. This is the minimum I have to give to my studies everyday for that semester. I wanted consistency and this minimum 2 hours gave, me that. I always overshot this hours but knowing that I have put in my minimum hours target for that day helped keeping me positive.

3. Use library extensively. I have written a long article back then of the benefits of library. And if you had been in GIE during that time. You would have always seen me at GIE’s library everyday. This is where my minimum 2 hours were always consumed. Not only it gave me the perfect peaceful and undistracted place to study but having so many reference books at hand increased the breadth of the knowledge that I studied. Please do read the advantages of studying in library that I found then.

So these were the 3 things that every AeSI students can emulate in his or her own study schedule to get the maximum out of this semester. What else do you recommend for a productive semester? Have other tips for studying productivity, do share in comments.

Energy, Interest, and Time.

Energy, interest, and time.

These 3 things can transform failure to success. Mundane to meaningful and common to special.

Energy to push forward,to carry on against odds. Interest to carry on, to explore to learn. Time to try things, to put in, to keep the promise.

If you can incorporate these three words in your life, you will never fail or miss something useful.

Natarajan sir is the person in my student life, who displayed all this 3 traits. He was in GIE close to 15 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, giving one class lecture after another. So no doubt about the energy and the time he put it.

And interest in his subjects and love to teach is what propelled him.

So find your interest and begin to put in the time and energy to it and success will be yours.

We all know how Natrajan sir clears doubt clear by giving simple simple example. He explains with such a example that we can not forget for a long time.

Bellow is his answer..

I'm a teacher and I can not teach my self . I need students to teach. Similarly oxygen is oxidizer, it can not be burnt by itself, it needs fuel to get burn.

Natarajan sir is a very well known faculty of Anna university.He is also visiting faculty of GIE.

Bharat Forge's non-auto revenues to grow

Auto-parts' maker Bharat Forge expects 40 per cent of its revenues to come from sectors such as mining, power, oil and gas and aerospace by 2013.

Sahana Sarma, Partner, McKinsey & Company, said the current downturn is a structural break and is the time to ask "'What is the new normal?'."

"Indian innovation is among the fastest growing in the world but with a low level of diversification. India's young population can be a critical asset over the next few decades," Sarma said.

IAI Gets $100 Million Contract for HAROP Killer Drones

Officially unveiling the HAROP loitering weapon at the Paris Air Show, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has announced receiving a contract to supply the HAROP Loitering Munition (LM) system to a foreign customer. Foreign sources hint the customer could be India. The contract is estimated to be worth over $100 million.

 

Tata Elxsi Limited will pursue projects in the automotive and aerospace sectors

Embedded product design and engineering company Tata Elxsi Limited has said that it will aggressively pursue projects in the automotive and aerospace sectors into fiscal 2010. Tata Elxsi’s development centre in Thiruvananthapuram focuses on supporting automotive and aerospace customers for mission-critical embedded software, hardware and systems.Tata Elxsi expanded its Thiruvananthapuram development centre last year to meet scale-up requirements of its clients in these industries.

“We have recently bagged a project in the technology-intensive aerospace and defence domain from a European Tier 1 aerospace supplier. We began our engagement with a pilot activity, which has been expanded into a full-fledged development program,” R Natarajan, VP -Automotive and Aerospace practice, Tata Elxsi said.

So good opportunities for avionics engineer in the next year. Be prepared.

 

Aerospace investors eye engines for growth

But the main difference between aircraft makers - or "airframers" - and the engine makers lies in their earnings models. Boeing and Airbus tends to earn the most when they sell a plane.

By contrast, engine makers make relatively low margins on engine sales, one Rolls-Royce executive explains.

"The business model of engine makers is very different from other manufacturers," explains Accenture aerospace and defence analyst Damien Lasou. "Their business model is a service model, which is very protective during a downturn."

Put simply; when an aircraft manufacturer buys an engine, it enters into a long-term service agreement with its maker.

Broadly speaking, the original purchase price makes up only about a fifth of the total cost of an engine's 30-year lifetime, according to Mr Lasou.

"Having many engines in service is a guarantee of future revenue," he says.

The same is true for suppliers of any "selectable" aircraft equipment, including anything from radars to tyres, sound systems to aviation electronics, observes Honeywell's Mr Carmassi.

"In the commercial world, it is not uncommon for a product to be given for free to be installed in a Boeing or an Airbus, in the knowledge that it has a 30-year servicing requirement paid for by the airlines," he explains

An interesting statistics.

Currently, there are some 55,000 engines in service across the world. GE is looking after some 20,000 of them, hotly followed by Pratt & Whitney, while Rolls-Royce has 14,000 engines in service.

India rocking in Britain

Davies, who was in India for business and official meetings last week, said India and Britain now needed to forge partnerships in new areas, including aerospace and advanced security, to give their business ties a further boost. Davies said he had met with representatives of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at the Paris air show recently and discussed entering into “partnerships” with India in the areas of aerospace and advanced security, in which Britain had “excellence”.

Yet another sign of India's immergence in aerospace sector or something else?
