Hurray AeSI Alumni Association official now!

Hurray AeSIAA is official now. What is aesiaa? It's AeSI's official
alumni association. As President Mr. Rituraj has stated in a recent
mail, it's a whole new begining!!

Answer this! What makes IIT's? It's their alumni's!!

Likewise AeSI alumni Association aims for being the face of AeSI. It
aims for professional development of graduates of AeSI. It's aims to
strenghen AeSI's engineers market value.

So your first pit stop after graduating AeSI should be AeSIAA!!

Preparing for a technical interview remember these points.

Preparing for a technical interview. Then here are some points that
you should keep in mind.

1. Know the basics of the subjects you have listed in resume and all
the projects you mentioned
2. Keep your concepts crystal clear.
3. Be ready to explain the concepts in general terms not the
definitions.
4. Know your resume like the back of your hand.
5. Talk slowly.
6. Explain and paint a picture when explaing a concept.

I know a friend of mine who is expert at explaining stuff. And he uses
this approach in all the interviews.

Importance of First Class Degree in Aerospace Job market - help me answer this question

Recently I got a mail from someone who has graduated from AeSI this semester. We had the following discussions on email. Now I want your help on this. So readers of this blog please pitch in and have your say to what he should do or not do?

Please read the whole of the discussion and chip in your comment at http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/

Hello Sir,

This result brought a new spark in my life as I 'finally' cleared my BE from AeSI (in Propulsion). Although I find this good news surrounded by mist.. I cleared my degree with 58%.
My confusion is, will 58% pose obstructions in growth of my career? Is it difficult to grab a good first job with less than 60%? Also, as of now I am not planning for post graduation.

Since you really hold good knowledge of Indian Aerospace job market.. I keenly seek your advice on this.
What should I do, should I get my degree in current status or should I wait & go for improvement (I'll have to take at least 2 subjects to make up for deficit). Although I am not very interested in delaying my degree by another 6 months, but nothing stands taller than requirements which are necessary for a good career.

I hope I was able to express myself well, plz let me know if there's anything more you need to know to advice me on this.
Waiting for your response...

Thanks & Regards

My reply.....

Hi

Congrats on Becoming an engineer!! Well the choices you are facing are similar to what I faced when I received my final mark sheet.

So what should you do? Frankly I don't know! Nor will anyone else know. It's your decision that you have to take. But here are some points that I can state to help you decide.

1. 60% is absolutely necessary if you want government job. They still insist on it. Rules are bend now on then but not always.

2. Very very few people get a job just after graduating. Even if you are above 60% you might have to wait for couple of months to get a job.

3. Skills are more important than the degree. If you have the skills there is no way people can restrict you in any company.

4. There are lot of AeSI graduates in every aerospace organisation in India so AeSI folks are all accepted in companies. Remove a shadow of doubt that AeSI and low percentage marks can hinder you.

5. Yes having percentage will open more options but it's the skills that will help you soar in your career. If you have the skills. You will get a job in days.

As I see it from this side.

A career is like a hot air balloon. Your degree gives you the permit to fly, and the percentage is just the volume of the balloon. What really matters is the hot air. If you can pump enough of it , no one can stop your balloon to reach the sky. This hot air is your abilities, your skills, your initiative.

So its up to you now, do you want increase the volume of your balloon or pump it up with hot air to begin your journey as an engineer.

Good luck!!

Hello Sir,

Thanks for your reply (specially when you wrote all this from your mobile) :)

I do understand that skills hold a very important position but fear from situation when at few places people won't even agree to look at my CV as I am ineligible according to their rules!!

"1. 60% is absolutely necessary if you want government job. They still insist on it. Rules are bend now on then but not always."
- What % does govt jobs constitute among all? Can a person be still in a comfortable position for fetching a job if he is not eligible to apply to govt jobs due to 60% rule. I don't have much idea on this. Please comment...

Also, are private firms not much concerned about this fact or is it like they tend to ignore it if otherwise you posses a good profile?

What did you decide at your time? :) Where are you working these days?

There's one more thing sir, In the job market, is there really a difference in jobs for Propulsion or Aerodynamics engineer? I mean like this job is for Aero & this is for Prop. Should a person just grab whatever is coming his way, prop based or aero based (sometimes getting a job becomes more important than field of interest)?

I hope I am not troubling you much with my never ending questions... :)

Thanks & regards

I know I have lot of readers who have lot to say on this topic, with this blog post, I want to invite all the past and present AeSI graduates to share their experience and advice with him. So now its your turn, come forward and have your say. Write in your comment at http://my-aesi.blogspot.com

Measure what is measurable to succeed in everything you do including AMAeSI

Last week when I wrote the post begining with Galileo's quote, I had
in mind the previous words of wisdom from the man called father of
science.

I have already mentioned it but it's worth repeating. "Measure what is
measurable and make it which is not!!"

What Galileo is referring is measure your progress or efforts. If you
don't you won't be improving.

So are you following this in your life?

Ever since I have began measuring my blog posts and my other goals, I
have steadily progressed and now I have a better sense of where I am
on my projects and goals. So this simple measurement and tracking
different metrics has increased my efficiency.

So are you tracking yours?

If you ask me one advice that you want for this semester then this is
the one. Measure what is measuable. It might be the number of hour you
study? The number of hours you spend on any software?

Add a tip of Galileo's wishdom in your journey of AeSI!!

Start your interview preparation with this question!

If you are likely to face an interview in next month or two then this
is the time to begin preparing for it.

Early preparation and methodically scanning of resume will give you an
head start in an interview.

The first thing that you should practise and get it right is your
openning line.

After the pleasantaries are over the first question that usually
starts the interview is 'Tell us something about yourself?'

So this is the question you should prepare well. What and how you
answer this question will pave the path for the rest of the interview.

As I have said earlier, it's the interviewee who leads the interview.
So learn the way to answer the questions. Learn all about this

You cannot control the wind but you can always adjust the sail

You cannot control the wind but you can always adjust the sail. -unknown

Loved this great quote!! It's sums up what you can do when you AeSI
hands a totally unexpected ugly surprise!!

I have gone through this when in VMD paper I was sure I will get
around 80 and AeSI slamed fail!! Was devatated. Back fired for
recunting but no change was the response.

This is when my mom said something similar that the above quote
expresses.

Many senior members of aesi are working on improving the unexpected
surprises so till then learn to adust the sails!! Set them in such a
way that whatever be the wind your boat sails to the coast!!

Is your resume shouting ' I am fresher !'

Be a freshers but don't let your resume show it!

I have seen many resumes of freshers and none had presented itself as
professional!!

Each and every resume shouts I am a fresher even before you read it.

Let the statement I am a fresher come from inside the resume but not
from the appearance of the resume.

Here are the things that I observed that need to be corrected before
you sent your fresher resume.

1. Resume is shabby. Looks like it's the first word document they have
ever edited.

2. Gramatical and spelling mistakes strewn everywhere.

3. Weak, generic objective statement.

4. Personal details are presented up front. Reception should be for
skills and projects not personal details.

5. Details of subject studied listed as if it's a bibliography of a
research paper. List your interest subjects and that too not more than
two.

6. No projects or if present they are nicly tucked somewhere near the
last page as if you are ashamed of them.

7. Skills section virtually absent.

8. Resume more than 2 page.

9. Lengthy project descriptions adding no value to the resume.

Avoid all these points to stop your resume from broadcasting ' I am
fresher' message!!

I've loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night!

I've loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night -Galileo

25 august 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's telescope!!

And sentiments in the quote mentioned above by Galileo is exactly what
anyone learning a new software tool like catia, solidworks,
nastran, ansys etc. should aim to achieve!!

When you are too fondful of a subject to be fearful of the mistakes,
you are truly enjoying and learning from the experience.

Aim for the time, you can genuninly utter similar words for your
chosen work, profession, project or life!

What this quote says is be passionate in everything you do!!

8 things that you can immediately do on your resume to enhance your chances in job search.

After the announcement of results I think, many of aesi graduates/
students will enter the stage where they need to attend to their
resumes. So here are some simple things that you can immediately do on
your resume for better results.

1. Cut the fat. Make it lean, mean and to the point.
2. Make all fonts consistent. Just use one type of font for all text.
3. In the first page include all the projects you have worked on in
bullet points.
4. Mention the software and other skills just after the projects.
5. Be brief in personal details no one needs your passport number!!
6. Name and Contact info must stand out. Increase its font size.
7. Resume shouldn't look crammed. Use lots of whitespaces.
8. Rephase your objective statement.

Apply each of this. Good luck!!
