Farewell myaesi!


This is my last post on the myaesi blog. Although I won’t be taking it off the air for quite some time yet, I will not be posting new material, or replying to comments. Over the coming days and weeks, I’ll be disabling comments on all posts and updating relevant pages with a auto notice.

 

I have been writing here since 2004. At first, there was little interest in this rather niche blog. I am pleased to say, however, that our readership has grown steadily over the years, especially after the internet went mainstream. The blog has been a growth experience for me and had been a very handy conversation-starter.

 

However, all good things must come to an end, and it’s time for me to move on. There are many others now writing about aesi, and doing so very well and more prolifically than I am able to manage these days. I must also honour the key lesson that my recent reflections has taught me: If I want to achieve some of the things that I aspire to, I have to narrow my focus and apply my energy to fewer projects.

 

Thank you very much for being part of the myaesi journey. I have appreciated every comment, pingback, email exchange and offline conversation over the years. This journey has never been about creating a super-successful blog or monetizing the content, although I have played lightly with both at times. For the most part, this blog has primarily served as a very public and honest account of my own giving away to the community which has given me so much. By drawing on the experiences of my aesi and working life, I have always chronicled my learning through this blog.

 

I trust that my experiences have been useful to you and have perhaps helped you to bring order and light to your own personal journey of AeSI.

 

In case you’re wondering – I’m certainly not abandoning my blogging ways. Quite the contrary. I have an active blog at sukhbinder.wordpress.com where I explore my other interests in life.

Future Requirements of Aerospace Engineering Business

In last few weeks I read this major news on air pollution; 1. ‘Fresh air is for sale’ in China, A Canadian Start-up Company is selling fresh air in China’s major cities and the first 500 bottles (of 7 liters) have been sold quicker than expected. 2. Delhi government has enforced an experimental plan of odd-even concept to reduce the number of vehicles on road to reduce percentage of man-made CO2 and the government is also thinking stop the registration of new high-powered diesel vehicles. And, on 05-Jan, Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Mercedes and other premier companies argument saying ‘Will your cars emit Oxygen’….? About news are related to emission. May be above solutions are short term precautionary measures.

The long-run solution is, to design and build vehicles which emit less CO2. The engineering industry is under tremendous pressure to reduce the CO2. From major OEMs and Tier 1s, lot of experiments and researches are happening to reduce CO2 and NOx and it turned as major challenge to the engineering industry.
Even Aerospace industry is also facing same issues on CO2 emission. “ACARE Chairman, Peter Hartman says “Attitude towards to Environmental issues because of increase in airline traffic; ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research) in Europe in 2002 laid out targets to reduce the emission; 50% reduction in CO2 ; 50% reduction in perceived noise; 80% reduction in NOx by 2020”.

Possible probable ways to reduce the amount of CO2 and NOx irrespective of industry are; increase of structural efficiency, development of advanced engines, design of light weight structures using advanced metallic materials and composites, correct estimation of loads and use of right factors, timely weight reduction campaigns, alternate fuels, improved aerodynamics etc.
In Sep and Nov 2014 I posted two articles on the role of advanced metallic and composites materials in aerospace industry. In order to reduce CO2 use of advanced materials is one of the major options available. Apart from aerospace industry the industries like automotive, rail and wind energy industries seeing huge benefit from this.

About Aerospace industry:
The man-made CO2 from commercial aviation is only up to 2% but the CO2 emission per passenger per kilometer is 153gms which is much higher compared to other mode of transports. Hence, aerospace industry is also under tremendous pressure to reduce emission of CO2.

Since future requirements for number of aircrafts are much higher compared to last few decades, IoT also expected to play a vital role in manufacturing engineering. This is basically to increase rate of production with minimized errors. But, advanced engineering design and developments is the one which is expected to  bring emissions down.
  • As per one of the Boeing report, first century of composites is between 1940-2040, in that 75 years have been passed and more research and developments have been carried out from aerospace industry. As a result of this both Airbus and Boeing are able to design and build the aircrafts with 50 plus percentage of composites. The aerospace industry has seen huge benefit from the use of composites which reduced the weight, CO2 emission and certain extent noise level. The use of composites will also bring a more pleasant environment for passengers as it will allow considerate increase in cabin humidity.
Both Airbus and Boeing are working on new technologies which shall further improve aerodynamic efficiency at reduced weight with less CO2 emission. Some of them are;
From Airbus:
  • Under mission of ‘Aircraft future 2050 Vision – Eco Climb, Express skyways, Free glide approach, Ground operations and Power’
  • Working on ‘Laminar flow experiment on wing section’ along with GKN and Saab
From Boeing and NASA:
  • Working on reduced vertical with active flow control technology under mission ‘Smaller Tails and Big breakthroughs’
  • Non-stick wings to get rid planes of bug guts
  • Shapeshifting of Aircraft wings
As per reports, surely and shortly these researches and experiments are becoming reality will bring huge benefit to the commercial aircraft category. The outcome of some of these researches can be implemented in existing flying aircrafts as retrofits and some in new designs.
Apart from Boeing and Airbus other premier companies like Bombardier and Embraer are also investing lot in composites and advanced technologies.
  • Bombardier is following in Boeing's footsteps with regard to introducing large-scale composite structures in making commercial aircrafts. Bombardier management knows that composites are the way to go. This is the future.
  • Embraer says that, Lightning strike, repair, durability under impact, post-buckling, metal-composite interfaces, are some of those signs. These issues are being analyzed and continue being a challenge. Knowing about that, Embraer has been investing in trainings and incentives the development.
The global advanced composites market is growing at a faster rate mainly due to the growing demand in aerospace & defense, automotive, and wind energy applications. In order to meet the increasing demand from global markets, the leading companies recently invested heavily to increase their production capacities. Investments are also being made in research facilities to develop new technologies that reduce the manufacturing cost.

About Engineering Services companies:
  • In changed scenario of business trend and requirements engineering services companies need to do more with ‘engineering’ than ‘services’ alone. This also indicates that, in future, services type job opportunities are coming down and it will surely affect the growth of some companies who does not understand the value of engineering.
  • In contradiction to this, some engineering services companies are optimizing the cost by removing people at senior level. To meet future requirements the companies need to improve their technical strength otherwise, today’s their decision might become expensive for such companies as the dimension of the business changing.
  • With current gained experience the companies shall do same type of work but that type of work may not come again. Since the future requirements are different, different approach need to be adopted. Otherwise, this increases unemployment rate.
  • In last two decades Indian aerospace industry has not able to create and develop 10 designated chief engineers but, managed to create few hundred PMP holders.
  • More qualified graduates (PhD’s and Master graduates) need to spend their time in providing solutions to technical problems, innovation and competency development areas. In one of interview Airbus senior vice president said future lies in new competency, technology and innovation.
  • In India universities/institutes are producing more BE/M Tech qualified graduates than the requirement but industries need to make them as good engineers.

Results of Make in India : Saab offers Gripen fighter jets under 'Make in India' with full control (Technology Transfer)

Swedish defence major Saab has offered to manufacture its fifth generation Gripen fighter aircraft here with technology transfer to India, in a renewed bid for a pie in the multi-billion dollar worth IAF modernisation plan. Saab is not only offering to set up a base here but also help in the development of aerospace capability for the next 100 years and partner in developing the next version of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), being developed and designed by Aeronautical Development Agency.

Besides Saab, US' Lockheed Martin and the France's Dassault Aviation have offered their jets in line with the government's push for 'Make in India'.

Results of Make in India : Aequs sign pact to supply components for Boeing's Chinook helicopter

Dutch firm Fokker Technologies, a division of GKN Aerospace, and aerospace manufacturer Aequs on December 17, 2015 signed an agreement to supply machined components for Boeing's Chinook heavy lift helicopter that India is also buying. Under the Long Term Agreement (LTA), Aequs will supply machined detail parts which will be made in India for the Chinook heavy lift helicopter.

Moreover Aequs Aerospace has also opened a new aerospace machining facility at its special economic zone (SEZ) in Belagavi, which strengthens Aequs' position in the market and the largest supplier to Airbus for aerospace machined components and sub-assemblies in the country. Aerospace component manufacturing company Aequs Aerospace will invest $50 million over the next five years to manufacture aerospace machined components in a new facility at its special economic zone (SEZ) in Belagavi. This facility is exclusively for France's Airbus, has the capacity to house 150 CNC (computerized numerical control) machines and generate revenue of $75 million annually. Several components for the Airbus' A320 and A380 are manufactured at the Belagavi facility. Airbus has also been sourcing doors for its single aisle aircraft family from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for several years now. 

This is just the beginning. We at AeSI Alumni Association congratulate our prime minister for such a great initiative which strongly emphasize on design and make in India.

B) in the upcoming Embedded Safety and Security Summit (ESSS2015) to inspire Make in India Avionics designs. Announcing "Aero Club"

Yesterday yet again, a relevant discussion happened on our whatsapp group Aero club. And it again gave a satisfaction of being the admin of group and that group is serving  its purpose. It's been 1 and half year and honestly I had no clue that this group will last long. With I guess some 10-15 of my friends on what's app I started this group with idea of discussing issues of society, sharing notifications regarding jobs, technical events, internship, etc. And important news related to aerospace field.
I believed that we people of AeSI can actually help each other sharing such important things and can actually resolve many of the problems that we are facing and can work on bringing change which we want. And for that we need unity.

And So I started this group and started sharing everything that I felt relevant for society people, and yes it benefited all of us in group. In fact, last year mr. Rahul Verma send an application to society for improving the quality of marksheet. We made it success. Group has got us support from many of them.
And there today this group has 60+ ppl. I am amazed. And I am happy, something I started and got support of friends and that helped me and many of U in the group, directly or indirectly. I thank one and all for this trust and integrity. Now I am thinking to expand this group and so here is the announcement.

Update on CSRP

If you are following myaesi blog, you might be aware of the CSRP program. 

We had a great response from the AeSI students and recent graduates. After the responses were closed the students thoughts on their selected projects were shared with mentors and they finally made the selection. 

We have selected 14 students/graduates for 6 exciting projects. The projects range from propulsion, CFD, FEM and data analysis. 

Below is the text of the email the selected applicants have received. Please check your email if you have applied and were selected. 

This is first such kind of initiative by AeSIAA and we hope everyone participating in the program will find benefit and will come out richer in experience and knowledge. 

As this being the first such program, we expect to learn as much from it as the selected students. For those who couldn't make it in this edition of CSRP, don't be disheartened, we plan to roll out the next CSRP during winter.

Effort and Learning

As a rule, the more effort you make, the more you learn.

It's true for studies, for any skill building and for acquiring knowledge.

It is with this in mind that collaborative student research program (CSRP) was conceived.

There's a common consensus that students of AeSI lack practical knowledge and to some extent it's true. For me it was definitely true.

I thought I had good knowledge and skill when I applied for NAL as a trainee. But latter realized how false those assumptions were. NAL was the time that I learnt the most, acquired varied skills and got close to what I enjoyed the most.

Working there wasn't easy but it sure brought me lot of benefits.

CSRP is designed with that goal. Mentor will choose a practical problem from his work or academic pursuits and collaborate with a willing student to solve that problem. A win win situation for both, mentors problem solved and student has a practical experience of working on an actual problem.

The program won't be easy. It's not for everyone. Not everyone who enrolls will get to participate. But I am sure it will be a great learning experience for anyone who chooses to participate in it.

Calling AeSI Students for CSRP

Dear AeSI Students/Graduates,


If you aim to explore the area ( eg FEM, CFD etc) in which you wish to pursue your career you may try your hand at CSRP.

It costs nothing except your time & commitment.

If you are ready to go extra mile, extra efforts are needed.

At the end of this exercise you are able  to publish a paper, or
make a good repo with mentor, or got to know your mentor very well, or
know about industrial practices through informal discussions, or have an accurate view of the kind of work usually done in the industry

Under CSRP, You are ready with something instead of nothing when you graduate.

Also your mentor would be ready to write something once he works with you. A good LOR means a ticket to reputed universities. Our association for learning should continue. Getting degree is only beginnings, we have to travel more. Please pass to all in your amaesi circle.
