career, you have to earn and create it.

So in this post I want to explore the computer language that people in
specific streams of domain of work can learn. The suggestion are not
hard and fast. They are just general directions, you are free to
choose whatever excites you.
If you know what language you want to learn, that's great. But I am
writing this for anyone who is undecided.

Excel
Inclusion of excel as part of computer language might be a surprise
but I will explain it.
In the next post this week, I will elaborate some merits and demerits
of learning each of the mentioned language!

No one is born confident. Everyone acquire it.
Recently I received a mail from someone who is working in nal after
his graduation since 2008. His mail is an epitome of non confidence.
Don't want to judge someone from his one email, but I think he needs a
serious jolt and a big dose of confidence!
Buddy no one can instill confidence in you, no medicine can induce it,
no tonic can add it, you need to grow it yourself.
I was shy and still am when it comes to speaking in groups, but now
with this blog and many other online and offline things I have enough
confidence to speak up when it matters.
What should you do to increase your confidence?
Set small goals.
Accomplish them, celebrate them. Unless you try and fail and then
retry and pass. You will never gain confidence. Everyone try, fail and
suck in the job before they master it.
Read books. Instead of tv radio or cricket, read books. Read from a
lot variety of places. Read blogs. Reading opens up lots of
opportunities, it expands your horizon and stimulates your imagination.
Have a passionate creative habby! Create things, stuff or something.
It might be useful or otherwise but create something.
And I mean have a CREATIVE hobby. Listening song is not a creative
hobby, writing songs is. Seeing cricket is not a creative hobby,
playing it is. Reading blogs is not a creative hobby, writing one is.
So choose a CREATIVE hobby!
This week I will explore some specific techniques that I applied while
I was in nal to increase my confidence, so stay tuned.

Constraining the limited amount of time you can work, you create a
positive pressure on your brain to learn and do the same task quickly.
It's like compressor of a gas turbine. The higher the pressure ratio
the higher will be the thrust or output. So constraining, limiting and
putting a chain around the task pushes your mind to a zone where it's
more creative and it does accomplish much more.
It's far far better to study for one hour with single minded focus
than chipping on the the book for the whole day hardly taking anything
in. It's far better to crack two tutorials of a software of Catia or
ansys in an hour than tinkering with the software for the whole day.
It's far better to practice ten input output related simple programs
than thinking whole day about your next big program.
The point is put time constraint in your work, study and everything
you do and you will see that you are doing better.
And what more you are gaining few extra hours in a day.

By this i am reffering to follow active revision policy. Revise
everytime. Revise at the start of the study session, revise at the
end of the study session and setup a revision day.
So make a revision centric timetable. Sandwich your study hours with
small slices of revisions. Do recall and summarize session for 3
minutes before every study hour.
This simple change in your study routine can help you leapfrog way
ahead of anyone.

Update and upload your keyword rich but brief resume on a job
websites. Be brief and use specific keywords. Once the call comes send
in your full blown but optimised resume for the interview call.
Survey the job portal. See the jobs posting there and answer to
yourself honestly which is the most likely job that you can get with
your current skills in the resume. Answer this truthfully and half of
your job worries are over. Its not about what you want, it's about
what the Market has in offer for you. So decide this first!
Once you have found the job you likely fit in. Grab a book of the
topic that is the most sought after skill required by that
requirement. Start studying it one hour a day every day from that day
onward. Modifying your resume, sending your resume are tasks that you
will eventually do but first make a commitment to yourself to be
knowledgeable in the specific skill that is required.
Now optimise your resume for that specific job. Go through your
projects and skills and find connections to the job you are studying
for. If you find a project that has a connection, optimize it
otherwise nuke the project from your resume.
Same goes for skills. If it adds value to the requirement keep it or
else nuke it. Kill it. Treat your resume as telegrams. Do keep only
the stuff that is relevant and that matters.
Research the conpany and make a good unique cover letter to accompany
the resume. Highlight your skills relevant to the job.
Last of all send the resume to the firm direct. Find an email address
to send and send it direct. That's it.
If you can accomplish all these steps, you are few steps closure to
your job!!

From orkut, gmail, gmaps, talk, chrome etc. Google launches the
product once the tool is ready in the barebone form. Then it does
repeated iterations to incrementally update and improve it's products!!
You need to do the same with your resume, it's can never be perfect
and it will never finish. So upload and start using the first barebone
document you have. But always do incremental iteration to it. Improve
it.
Nuke some projects, update the objective statements, add details,
increase skill related keywords. Do whatever that you can do but
iterrate and improve.
This is the only way you can take advantage of a resume. A resume
locked in your mail is of no value, a resume waiting to be perfect is
useless. So don't worry about the details. Post it and improve it!!
First launch then iterate. This is the stategy that will help you!
If you plan to be in an engineering domain and specially in aerospace
domain then at least learn one programming language.
Yes AT LEAST learn one programming language. The main point is you
should have a knack of how to write a program. You should know how to
solve a given problem.
Choose whatever language that is available to you, but do it anyways.
Choose whatever programming language that you can easily have your
hands on. It doesn't matter.
What matters is that you should have the ability to write peograms if
need be.
You see, you are and will be a knowledge worker. In whatever job you
land up eventually, computers will be your primary tools. And
programming and knowing how to program in one particular languge is
one skill that will always come in handy to you.
So decide one programming language today and get going.
That's what will help your work done in future!!

From all the resume I have seen, I find that we all work on varied
different projects. From CFD meshing, to code writing to
solidmodelling , to optimization.
And in an eagar jeal to get the attention of the recruiter we cram the
resume with all those work and projects. We proudly display
everything, from small to big, in our resumes.
And to make the matter worse, we paste a generic career objective to
the resume!
This confuses the recruiter. This throws the HR off balance. Not
knowing where you fit, which job is for you is a matter of his/her
thought and this is where you loose the interview.
This is why in a walk-in, the HR looks at your resume and asks you to
keep it with them and they will call you latter! And the call never
comes.
Your resume, complete in all respect but lacks the focus and this
forms a hurdle to your getting to the interview table.
So make your resume razor sharp.
Declare what kind of job you want. If CFD is your target job profile,
mention it in your objective statement. If CFD is the work you want to
do, highlight your CFD tools and skills rather than fortran. If CFD is
what you want to get into then highlight and make your resume CFD
rich!! Keep your target skills, projects and experiences first!!
Don't dilute your skills, experience and projects by mentioning
everything at onces.
This is the one thing that you can immediately apply to your resume to
stop coming back from a walkin without an interview!!

I set out to identify what is it that is different on my productive
days from the non productive days.
This post is the result of two things that I noticed in my pursuit.
Constaints and planning ahead.
Planning ahead was easy to pin. My most productive days were those in
which I did plan the day ahead the previous night. They days were much
more focussed if I defined the broad work I wanted to do. Whenever I
shuned that habit and didn't plan the day, my day was just a jumble of
tasks that came under firefighting and pure waste.
The other thing I noticed was setting a time constraint on the task I
need to do. I specified the minimum hour of time that I will devote to
a task. Like if I had to write a report in office, I constrainted
myself that I will do it after lunch for 1 hour and try to complete as
much as I can. This simple one hour constaints increased the focus and
concentrattion that I brought to that work.
Instead of chipping on the report for all day, I concentrated all the
effort in one focused hours and this not only left me lot of time to
do other things but made the report writing more challenging.
So what can you learn from this. In your training, in your studies, in
your life you too can apply this two universal principals. They work
and can make a great difference in your life if you can successfully
internalize this two as habits in your life.
All I can say is the earlier you begin, the better.
