If you guys are wondering why the post from my side has slowed down since august.

Well there's a reason behind it.

I am writing some where else. As myaesi has blossomed, I am now tending the seeds of my personal blog. The URL is simply www.sukhbindersingh.com

There I am trying to practice what I preach. This is an online repository of my personal projects and thoughts about fortran, gas turbine, aviation, aerospace and other things in life. Please do visit if you are interested.

Try to imagine the time when you were giving any paper of Sec. A or Sec. B. Friends, It's really very difficult to pass any exam without the guidance of seniors and teachers. I have received many emails from students that please help me in getting this e.book and all.... Henceforth I request you to please help your co-fellows in terms of books. Please provide the links of various e.books available on the Internet and which are good. By doing this, I think that our fellow students will be benefited. Even I feel proud that I had very good community of helping friends, They helped me a lot in getting many e.books . During the days, I was learning programming language concepts of C at Hewlett-Packard, I have observed few things ; I think that they will help the students who wish to learn any programming language and those who wants to enter in the professional world.

1. I do remember my first day "ORIENTATION DAY", it's the time when company educate the candidates about what we shall learn in the upcoming days? What is company's expectations ? & also educate about the journey of company till today. I observed that many candidates don't understand the importance of it, they feel that it's just an Induction training ... we'll not learn anything in it... however actually It's the best time for you to learn few things like : how the management team is delivering the things, in case of unexpected questions asked by the team...... what is the approach they are going to use..... , there leadership skills and a lot.......
2. I'm sharing one incident with you which happened with me. There is something called "DATA TYPES" in C language, Even though I have learned them so many times but I have realized later that I don't know even a single thing. So whenever we learn something again, it's obvious we shall learn new concepts.
"Suppose you are a developer and you have been assigned to make a simple program to get the age of a traveler of Indian Railways, It's simple that you'll use INT (int a;) however my trainer explained me that how selecting wrong data type affects the cost of the project. A survey says that daily 2 million people travel in Indian Railways, an INT data type consist of 8 bit (let's say) , a normal human age can be max. of 99 (in general) which is 1100011 in binary.... hence for a single customer 1 bit is wasted... and for 2 million people... 2 million bits .... and to store the data for 3-4 months ... (??????? Oh my God !! ???????) now analysis that how much memory is wasted ; and to have this memory how much cost you require.... "
So I want to suggest that never consider anything like it's damn simple... we should try to think/analysis different aspects of everything. There must be a proper use of grammar in any program script. Even Sukhbiner Singh also says that a programmer must be a good in debugging.

Overall i agree with the author and the part that resonated with the most was this.

"One cannot learn engineering and programming merely by attending trainings. One has to learn it by doing, solving problems, observing what experienced engineers do, experimenting, screwing up a few times and reworking, talking to good engineers, etc. "

I had a similar experience when I was in NAL. Working under Dr Ramamurthy presented me the opportunities to work on so many varied engineering problems.

From gas turbine calculation, to designing a combustion chamber cooling fin, from designing mixed flow compressor to creating a database for efficiently storing all the engineering drawing produced by the lab, from running small gas turbine engine test to creating small Matlab codes to analyze the results. From solid modeling compressors to developing c software to receive and interpret data from a gps of micro air vehicle. I did it all.

Resolutions and how to keep them?

Ok this is 10th day of this year. So tell me how are your resolutions going on.

Chances are you have slacked. I think, the number one reason for this might be you have forgotten the resolution. The thought has slipped.

I have seen in my own experience, sometimes we are not following the resolutions not because we don't want to but simply because they conceal themselves and our daily fires have taken control.

Most of our resolutions are essential things but not necessarily urgent. So when urgent work and class assignments come, we ignore the necessary.

Exercise to stay healthy is essential but colleague asking to do some of his work is urgent. And just like a crying cat gets the milk, the urgent task get preference over the essential.

So how to avoid it? Simple.

Keep reminders of your essential task and do the essential tasks first thing in the morning.

I am sharing some interview related tips & I believe that it will help you a lot in your professional life.
Please note that you never get the second chance to make a first impression. Isn't it? so be careful because someone said that first impression is the last impression.

Some points are here to remember:

Smile is one of the thing which matters in your impression. Good smile always please people.
Dressing is also an important thing. You should be in formals. It is important aspect at the time of interview. Dressing should be appropriate for the post and the company. Try to get information about what the company would expect from employees. What would be appropriate for a building company is very different for a public relations agency. Be well-groomed and clean and above all try to look confident. Mahesh Batra (http://in.linkedin.com/pub/mahesh-batra/b/31b/2a9), Manager - Training at iEnergizer always says that your dressing matters a lot in your professional life and it also increases your confidence by 10 times.
Do not forget to handshake in a proper manner.
Eye contact without glaring shows your confidence. It is one of the most important aspects of nonverbal communication and can make a significant difference in how you present yourself. If you look away when speaking to someone, you are viewed as lacking confidence or interest. So always answer the question with eye contact to interviewer.

Slowing down......

Slowing down is the key to increased speed.

Past couple of months I am dabbing with fortran GUI and trying pgplot graphics library. I have produced gui's in c and then integrated them with fortran, but creating GUIs from fortran is new to me.

As the exploration began i took the fire aim adjust approach!! I dived deep into the tutorials and anything that I could lay my hands on.

Quickly from tutorials I graduated to actually creating my own programs. This has been going on for a couple of months now.

In the begining I was sprinting as hard as possible. Learning,doing, getting stuck, reading and then doing again. The pace was fast.

But now as I become comfortable, my approach has shifted. I have slowed.

I write a program and ponder how and what am I actually doing. This slowing down and pondering has doubled my learning. It feels like I am learning at greater pace with this slowdown.

So the technique I want to advocate to anyone learning a new programming language, a new analysis or cad software, is to run in the first few weeks. Race and learn as much as you are able to handle. Dive deep and continue the pace as long as you are able to.

When exhaustion, sense of acheivement begins to creep in, slow down. Become deliberate in what you are doing? Question why and what you are doing?

I hope applying this method will help you as much as it has helped me.

If (1) AP fails, you continue the approach but your decision height (DH) and (RVR) runway visual range increase and your thumb is on the go-around (GA) button the entire time.

Why we fail AeSI exams?

) made a good point.

Student fail AeSI exams because of lack of knowledge, lack of
expression and lastly because of tension in the exam hall.

Yash advocates that to release that tension, take practice exams.

I agree this works but I would like to add to the conversation.

Beating lack of knowledge is straight forward. Spend time learning.
Put in the effort.

Lack of knowledge will surely doom you. It's the foundation. If it's
not strong, nothing can be built on it.

Lack of expression. This requires practice. Practice tests as
advocated by Yash are a great way to tackle lack of expression. If you
are failing inspite of studying, then this is the likely culprit.
Practice answering and taking mock exams!

Tension. The third reason that chokes your exam. I think tension is
the symptom here not the cause.

The real cause is our expectation. Yes our expectation that this is an
important moment and the exams are the do or die. This self
expectation causes the tension and eventually overwhelms us.

Yes the moment is important. But we put more weight to it than
necessary. In the exam hall, we need to tone down our expectations and
just give the exams as it's just other class work.

All my exams where I had this light attitude in the examination hall,
I actually did very well.

We choke not because we haven't studied but because of weight of our
expectation. So study hard, and when it's time to be in the
examination hall, take everything light.

It worked for me and I know it will work for you.

How to STAND OUT? Lets explore.

A few months back I was interviewing someone. Let's call him Arvind. He was decent. Had the right skills, he knew his subject well and knew what was asked and how to answer it.

We were a 3 member interview panel. Even before the interview began we were impressed with his resume.

The thing that was impressive about his resume was not what he has written but the actual verifiable evidence he gave of his work. That's what made his resume stand out.

A tool he has created in his leisure time is recommened by a professor of the caltech university. His contribution to a programming forum on internet has 1000+ downloads.

The fact that all this were not required and he did this in his part time were a positive for him.

So what am I getting at?

This is what I call personal assets. That guy in his spare time, after his work life was active with his passion and created things with those skills. This way slowly he has built something that others find useful and this is what he leveraged in his job search.

This method worked as everyone who saw that resume was impressed.

This is what I mean when I ask people to work on side projects. Not only side projects improve your skills but they help you create assets that one can leverage.

Internet and tools available there give you immense opportunity to stand out. The question is are you using them?

Group discussion is a part of interview in many organization, I personally feel that by referring some below given points we can win GD. It should be controlled by logic and arguments not by emotions. Isn't it ?

Tool A

It will increase the weight of your arguments

Point
Logic
Example

Point—Put your point of view in front of the group. It’s not necessary that your point should be different from others’ points. But it should be on well defined assumption. Your initiate will not provide your leadership quality but your thought process and how people accept your point.
Logic – Explain your logic behind that point. The logic will close all options for invalidity of your point. The acceptability across the member of the group will be lesser.
Example – Support your logic with some facts and figures. When you will support your point and logic with examples, this will be the moment when you convince most of the people in the group.

It looks simple but it has a sound psychological background. It will help you to control the members of the team.

Tool - B

It should be used when you are not the initiator in the GD and have fewer points to discuss. It is used when the topic is unexpected.

Analysis
Value
Example

Don’t speak in the start up (for 45 seconds) and just listen to others.
Notice all the point of views (with facts) spoken by the team members. Synthesis the information.
Now after having point of view with facts of majority of the team members you will analysis the collected data and give it a different meaning from all team members but should support their facts. There might be more than one analysis.
Value the analysis by prioritizing them.
Add the suitable examples and put your argument.

Influence the people all together and make them listen to your words. This can be done by speaking facts rather then judgments. Now the next thing will be to influence the main opponents who are challengers. There are two strategic ways to do it. Either convert majority towards yourself or make him react. If four in a group of five are in your favour then you need not to worry. If the fight is when you have only 50 percent people in your favour then attack the weakest member of that group to join you or make the opponent react so as to prove him weak. Execute the above steps in a sequential way. You will win the group discussion.

I hope that it will help you a lot at the time of interview.

Instantly liked it.

If you have read the ebook or are reading the blog for long, then you will agree that i always say. When learning something, in the beginning don't worry about the quality concentrate on quantity.

Do as much as you can. Produce as many models as you like. But focus on the quantity. This entails that you master the complex technical skills first before worrying about the products of your labor.

Once the skill is mastered, mind always gravitates towards the quality.

What are your views? Are you using the relaxing time after the exams in doing something that will create a long term professional asset for you?

In the today's era of advancement, only completing the degree doesn't
mean that you have become Aeronautical Engineer, however one should
try in the best possible way to improve the communication skills also
because there is a way to say "NO" even though you don't know the

my advice to my Aesi friends is , if they have free time, so they
should join any Call Center which has sales process, doesn't matter if
you will get screwed there on daily basis but after a couple of weeks
you will find that your communication skills are improving at a high
speed which indirectly enhances the way you talk to someone over the
phone..... I am not saying to work for the entire semester you can
work there after your exams and till the time you get your result...
and side by side you can learn excellence in software related to your
industry...

Telephonic Interviews

Today I was part of the team doing telephonic interviews!

Of all the interviews that we did only 4 got through, rest just faded.

As I observed, all the successful interviews had this two thing in common.

They were talking slowly and clearly. And they answered what was asked, nothing else.

For all the failed interviews, the people at the other end didn't realize that it was a telephonic interview and they just talked and talked without bothering if their message was going across.

While sitting at this end, the conversation felt as if the guy is having a conversation with himself.

Keep the main dish right by giving the right answer to the asked question and then garnish a little with good handwriting and tidy drawing and you all set to sail through the paper.

80% of your effort should concentrate on answering relevant and 20% can be devoted to make the answer sheet pleasant!

Read this J. D Long's career advice and here's the complete list of

You will see many of the advice is what myaesi blog always stands for.

Future posts will discuss some of this points again in details.

Be a profit center, not a cost center.

Use tools you don't have to ask permission to install (i.e. open
source).

Dependence on tools that are closed license and un-scriptable will
limit the scope of problems you can solve. (i.e. Excel) Use them, but
build your core skills on more portable & scalable technologies.

Learn basic database tools.

Learn a programming language.

Your internal job description may say, "Analyst" but get something
else on your business cards. Analyst is so vague as to be meaningless.
My external title is currently "Sr. Risk Economist." I like the
term "Data Scientist" for now. I expect that term will be
meaningless in 5 years.

Large organizations do not properly appreciate agile and smart
analytic types. Time at large firms should be seen as subsidized
learning. Learn lots, but get out.

Ensure you can explain any of your projects to your wife or non-
technical friends. It's good practice for board meetings later in
your career.

Be sure you know the handful of things that you can do better than
most anyone else. Add something to that list every year. Make sure you
can explain these things to non techies.

Be a profit center, not a cost center. At least be as close to the
profit center as possible. The chief analyst for the sales SVP is
closer to the profit center than an IT analyst supporting billing
operations.

Get really good at asking questions so you understand problems before
you start solving them.

Working on a tool is easy. Once you learn it, you are done. You just
have to follow the steps.

But this isn't correct. True learning begins after this stage.

Once you feel confident about the tool that you learnt, stop what you
doing and start thinking of the individual steps.

Yes slow down. Once you are comfortable with the tool, slow down and
think of each step.

Why you are doing this particular step? What is the limitation of this
step? When will it be not feasible to apply this step? What other
steps you can take?

To give a concerete example, when you are doing an analysis in Ls-
dyna. Stop and think why the analysis is not being done in ansys?

Stop and ponder what can be the implications of doing this analysis in
some other software?

When choosing an element for your analysis, dig deep and probe why you
are using this particular element?, what is it's advantage and
limitations? Is there any better element to use?

Slowing down and finding the answers to these questions will
accelerate your tools learning by ten fold!

Which two skills do an AeSI graduate need?

Everytime I do an interview, I keep hiting on these two thoughts.

Get your fundamentals right. Even if you don't have tools-knowledge,
right skills or relevant experience, but DON'T EVER falter in your
fundamentals.

AeSI might not have given you much exposure, many hours of hands on
training opportunities, but what it grinds in everyone of us is the
fundamentals. So learn them and internalize them. Remember them.

Get them wrong and you will have a hard time getting a job via an
interview.

Second thing is communication skills. Communication is just not
answering what has been asked, but expressing what you know.

It is the biggest differenciator. You might get away with limited
technical skills, but you will falter if you lack communication skills.

So if you have to just concentrate on two things for your future, let
this two to be it!!

Can Dabbling in section A create a rich AeSI experience?

Read this today and it instantly clicked with me.

From my days in aesi and in my writings in myaesi, I have been giving
this same message.

Read it.

"A great use of dabbling is actually to discover the best long-term
commitments for you to make. So dabble for discovery. Then commit for
mastery."

Dabbling is trying out different things. Giving randomness a chance.

This is what I ask students of section a of aesi to do. You have time.
So in section a, after your studies. Explore.

Do whatever takes fancy of you at that time. Don't worry if it will
help you in future or not. If you like doing it just try. Try things
out. More you dabble the better.

As the above quote says, this exploration will lead you to things that
you want to continue doing. So make a commitment and do them in
section b and beyond.

For me it was developing code, trying new things with it. And learning
about new future tech.

For me, Dabbling in section A did create a rich AeSI experience.

Percentage and future prospects of AeSI

A recent AeSI graduate emailed me with something like this.

I have completed aeronautical engineering in avionics stream after struggling for 8 years with less than 60%.

i am just worried about the percent i got.

Could you please give me any other suggestion.

Here's my reply.

First of all congratulation.

As I have written in many posts at myaesi, less percentage is a limitation but not a liability.

It limits options but doesn't kill them all together.

I hope you have, with all this time, become good at the subjects you have studied in aesi. That's important. Because if in the interview, no body can cross you on those fundamentals then no one will question the percentage.

Also I hope, by this time, you have picked up good skills. Technical and otherwise.

Technical and communication skills are the curtains that you will need to get past any interview panel. So cultivate them and become good at one particular relevant technical skill.

My motto is to be so good that they can't ignore you.

And Lastly, Respect the degree and the qualification that you have earned. It's yours. This is what you will go forward with. Your confidence in it should shine through. Any doubt you project will only hamper your progress.

Remember this if you don't respect it, No one else will.

My apology for not being able to update the blog as frequently as I would like to.

It isn't because of lack of something to say but it's mainly because of time.

I am in a turbulent phase now. Something new and exciting has made an entry in life, so most of my waking hours are dedicated in learning it.

Of the 18 waking hours, anytime I get off is spending reading more and more about that. I have immersed myself into it.

This is the form of learning I benefit the most from. Total immersion. Get the subject by the horn.

Last night, I watched Thomas Friedman's interview with Piers Morgan. He was talking about his new book, That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back. At one point during the interview, when Morgan asked Friedman his advice for young workers, Friedman replied, in his trademark catchphrase style, "the Age of Average is over."

He then continued: "You should aim to be an artisan…everything thing you do, you should be proud of, willing to put your initials on it."

So the question is how are you studying or working?

Are you playing average or aiming to be exceptional?

I hope it's the latter.

He has a great point. I dont believe in just work and no play.

In fact this is how I got into starting this blog and ouraesi club back in 2002.

My long stated opinion on this blog is that when you are in section a, you shouldn't think much about job and after aesi, but concentrate on your studies and use your spare time to explore whatever takes fancy to your mind at that time.

It may be kite making, taking cooking lessons, creating aircraft models, singing, dancing etc. The point is, section a give you time to expand your horizon. Gives you opportunity to grow laterally. So do that. It's the time to experiment.

I certainly did that.

As you pass section a, you get into the grove and start to know what you enjoyed and loved. This is the time to take up serious career related things. This is time to look beyond aesi and see what is on demand and what skills you want to build.

I certainly did this. I like programming and this is what I took up in section b. If you like analysis or building models or reading. Begin those tasks.

The tasks are not that important. Decide what skills you want to have when you graduate and start working on them.

How much time you spend is not important. More important is the consistenty. Put in your minimum hours in those skill building exercise and you are on to a great start.

So what's your take on this? Let's come up with activities and things that one can do in this period.

My Side Projects

I always talk about short personal side projects and somehow I fail to highlight them here on this blog. So this post is to amend that once and for all.

At any given time, I am at least working on two non work related, side projects. I choose the side projects that help learn me a skill, build something and are fun and interesting.

So where are these projects?

Most of them are in my hard disk. Unfortunately I haven't had the time to get them out. But I have began publishing some out.

Bringing out serves three purpose.
1. It helps get me some feedback.
2. It makes me feel good as I have contributed something to the world and
3. finally I complete the project if I know I have to publish it.

Get out and get wet

It's raining outside and if you aren't in the rain you won't get wet.

I am not talking of the watery downpour happening outside. I am referring to the current flood of job requirements for aerospace domain in the private and public sector.

There was not a better time to be in aerospace than this.

So go get out and get wet.

Upload your latest skills and achievement in your resume and float it.

The rain isn't there forever, get the most out of it.

If you have seen a requirement, and you doubt if you suit that requirement, do the safest thing, send in your resume and let them decide.

If you aren't sure you qualify, give yourself benefit of doubt and shoot that resume.

I have seen, most of the time, we underestimate our capabilities and don't just send in our resume. That's a mistake.

I am not saying shoot your resumes for all CEO jobs that you see, but if an interesting and worthwhile offer shows up, don't just let it go. Give it a shot.

I am in the industry for 7 odd years now. And if I have one thing to tell any aesi student or graduate, then this is it.

Effort is the only barrier there is. We mistakely use ability as an excuse.

Put in the effort, give your dues. That's the only thing that stands between you and your success. Ability is just crystalization of efforts.

Keep putting the effort. If you aren't seeing the results, look deep at your efforts.

Are you putting effort on the correct activities? Do you need to increase the effort?

So as you begin preparing for gate 2011, for aesi exams and for the job interviews always remember effort is the only barrier.

Can we go for masters after AMAeSI

Yes why not. So many have already done it, why not you.

Is AeSI evil?

No. But it depends. As after every exam results, this thought dominated my mind.

Do private firms recruit aesi graduates?

Yes. Aesi graduates have infected every organisation. So rest assured. From private to public, you are welcome everywhere.

What stream to choose for section B?

Any stream that you are comfortable. Every stream has equal chances of giving you a great career money wise. But if you want to be truly happy with your work, choose the stream you are more comfortable and enjoy regardless of the money aspect.

Which skills do I need to get ahead?

Many. But if I have to choose one and only one, then it has to be communication skills. Develop it. Both verbal and written communication skills can take you a long way!!

I am stuck in the same AeSI subject, what should i do?

afraid if i m to stuck in SecA due to that paper only. so i need ur urgent help regarding which books to follow that adheres to the question pattern so that i can at least pass the exam. its my 3rd year running..and i have no time. "

My first comment to him will be, go to a quite place, have some time and brainstorm what is it that he is getting wrong?

Keep AeSI out of the blame game and think hard on what can be your faults.

Just write out wherever comes to the mind. Don't judge. Keep thinking and pushing yourself for the reason on what is going wrong. Think back to all exams and find the causes.

Once you have number of causes, you will definitely begin seeing a pattern emerging. Now is the judging time. Find the main reasons that you see now.

Is is the lack of your understanding of the subject? Or is it your lack of expressing it in the exams. Or is it a combination of both?

You can fail in the exams only for two reasons, either you lack understanding of the subject or the understanding is not expressed well in the exam papers.

Find the reason and implement steps in your study routine to eliminate it.

New Delhi: The examinees have a right to inspect answer-sheets under
the transparency law, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled. The
evaluated answer-sheets are covered under the definition of the
"information" under the Right to Information Act, a bench comprising
Justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik said.
It upheld the judgement of the Calcutta High Court which had said
"rejection for inspection of answer-sheets cannot be sustained".
The apex court dismissed the appeals of Central Board of Secondary
Education CBSE), West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal
Council for Higher Education, University of Calcutta, Institute of
Chartered Accountants of India and West Bengal Central School Service
Commission which had challenged the February 5, 2009 judgement.

The apex court agreed with the findings of the High Court that the
examination conducting bodies do not retain the evaluated answer-
sheets under any "fiduciary capacity".

Why I don't pass a subject in AeSI?

I don't know. But let's me share what I did when I didn't pass.

After blasting aesi for the result, I usually turned to my own short coming.

And to my surprise I always found that there were some things that I would have done better. I was never able to outrightly blame aesi for my failure. A shadow of doubt always remained that I had lacked somewhere. I missed something.

But the act of thinking back and trying to ascertain the reason of my failure surely helped me see the cracks in my own study system. I learnt from them and finally I did pass those subjects.

So all I can suggest you guys and gals is once the amaesi aesi results are in. Take stock on what you did right and what went wrong? Why you failed? What you did in your passing subject and what you didn't in the failed subject?

An hour of this can go a long way in improving your studies.

Share your views. They are always welcome.

It takes time to bake a cake!!

Same is true for acquiring mastery in a skill or subject. You don't acquire knowledge or skills in one go. It takes time.

Acknowledge this fact and keep working on that skill and subject. You will surely master it!!

The real thing is stick with the practice! Sachin didn't became great just with one match, he baked his skills 10+ long years before he finally made his debut for India!

Give yourself some time and stick to it, you are destined to be a star!!

As you might have noticed, this whole July I was on a sabbath. Posts
were non existent on myaesi.

I had an accident and there were other things on my mind.

I am hoping to pick things up now and hopefully get the blog up to
speed this month.

Thanks for your patience.

By the way if you are holidaying after the exams, or passing time in
office, may I suggest that you all start one small project.

The project can be anything. Only critera is that this project should
not be more than two weeks long and it should produce something that
you can share with everyone.

I'll begin something from my end. August 15th is the deadline.

So what do you say? Game on.

Crossroads

Journey as a student of AeSI is full of crossroads. A student at least
finds himself at these three crossroads.

First one is should I join AeSI or not? This is the very basic one and
this blog is littered with posts that try to answer this question.

Second crossroad is encountered at the end of section A. Which stream
do I choose for section B? This is a tough one and it was the quest
for this question that prompted me to start the ouraesi yahoo group 10
years back.

This topic is also well talked about in this blog, if you find
yourself at the same crossroad, search the blog with appropriate
search words and I hope you will find some answers.

The third crossroad happens just before graduating. Should I join the
industry or go for higher studies?

This one is not answered that extensivly on this blog. I will attempt
to answer this in coming posts.

Meanwhile, if you have any advice, comment and remarks on any of this
or other crossroads faced by an AeSI students, do pitch in....

Effort not an hobby

This blog is an effort, it's not a hobby.

An effort to give back what I have received. It's a way to share my
experiences and insights that I had the previlege of having.

It's the effort of documenting the path that every aesi student charts
through.

So if you email me, or contact me via the comments, and I don't reply.
It's not that I don't want to. It's just I am involved with other
things in life.

Maintaining, writing here takes effort and so far I have managed to
keep it. I intent to do so in future.

Campus for AeSI and Industrial Training after section B

To speed things up, today I will attempt to answer two questions that
were asked two weeks back.

If you remember, in my previous two posts I am attempting to answer
question that are present in every aesi student's mind.

Today's questions are

3) Is it true that without 60%marks in section b u wont manage a
industrial training?

My knowledge on this is limited as it concens the new syllabus. In old
times, if you have overall 60% AeSI provided you with a 6 to 12 months
On Job Training. But one can always take your own initiative and get a
on job training in nal, Hal etc

Anyone here who has more Information on this, can you please chip in.
Any info on this is most welcome.

4) Are there any companies coming for recruitment in convocation?
Unfortunately there is no recruitment at the convocation.

At the convocation you get your certificates, you get to meet some
aerospace personalities and two good meals. That's it. No recruitment
drive there.

But don't worry, there's a good news in this department. AeSIAA has
taken this up and it conducts a recruitment drive or campus for AMAeSI
graduates once a year. Last time we did the recruitment drive in AeSI
Bangalore office and two AMAeSI graduates were placed through it. This
year aesiaa wants to make this event more grand!!

And there's one another avenue where lot of recruiter's post their job
recquirements. Ouraesi yahoo group. Be a part of it and participate.

How to pass AeSI papers? - open question to all

Just received a distraught and passionate mail from a section a
student. He said aesi examination question pattern isn't suited for
Indian environment. He argued that instead of subjective paper, Aesi
papers should be objective. He also doubted that there is something
wrong in the the checking of aesi answer sheets.

Well I have to admit, many students including myself have doubted the
checking system of answer sheets by AeSI. At some point of time, we
have wondered what happened to our marks when we were sure we have
done a great job in the examination hall.

I guess the reason for this doubt is the opaque wall that aesi has
put. We don't have access to the checked papers and this non
transparency raises out doubts, which are magnified when we get bad
results.

Now when I look back at those semesters where I felt Mr Goyal had some
evil hand in failing me, I think somewhere I was also responsible.

Examinations are not about telling what you know. It's about giving
relevant answers to the questions asked. It's not about spilling
whatever you know, on paper, but giving the right and accurate
information required by the question.

Brief and to the point answers are Indicators of your understanding of
the question.

Well these topic is open to lot of discussions, so I open this

Apple iPhone and you

Read the following at the noise and signal blog. It's about why
Apple's iPhone is dominating the smartphone market.

"The basics absolutely matter. If the basics aren't right then
worrying about the other stuff is futile. This is why Apple put years
of thoughtful work into getting the basics right. Then they released
the iOS and the iPhone. Then, a year later, they turned the iOS into a
platform for third party developers. And today that platform is
available on tens of millions of iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads.
Apple got their priorities straight."

Same priorities are applicable to everyone.

Be it as an aero society student or aesi graduate. Whatever we do, we
have to get the basics right.

Learning nastran or Ansys will go unused if you fail to understand the
simple concepts of stress and strain! Knowing non linear analysis will
go in vain if you don't understand the difference between linear and
non linear!

So build your base first.

For all aesi graduates I recommend that in section A, make studies as
your primary focus. Concentrate on getting your concepts right, before
emarking on skill building! Know what is taught. Explore those
topics. Learn them such that you can explain them to your grandmother.

Skill building can begin in the late two semesters of section b.

Percentage of marks in AeSI

Ok so today let us take the second question. It's not specific to any
stream. This question is almost on every aesi students mind.

"what is the percentage of marks required for an aesian for job? Are
both section a and b equally important or stress is upon section b?"

The obvious answer to this question is, the higher the percentage the
better. There's no fixed number here but most of the govt.
organisation look for candidates with marks more than 60%

For private companies there is no stated numbers.

These marks are just signals. If you have good percentage marks, you
are sending a strong signal. But if they are in 50's, that signal
prompts people to question your knowledge.

That's the only difference.

As I said earlier is some post here, always shoot for high marks but
if your don't get them, don't loose hurt. There is more to life than
marks.

For your second question, overall marks are more important than just
section b!!

What extra skills should an avionics stream student of AeSI have?

After my post on being profssional, I have received a couple of emails
from many of you. One such email had 6 questions for me to answer.

The question are apt and well framed. I will try to answer them all by
putting then in 6 different posts.

Mr Sumantra is in avionics stream and so his first question was

"we dont have practical in our course, so what extra thing do you
suggest a student should learn for avionics stream?, like students go
for CFD , catia and ansys for aeromechanical"

Let me begin by saying, if your main dish is great, then dessert does
not matter.

Whatever you have studied in aesi is the base, don't leave crack in
that base. Anything that you do beyond that is the dessert! It adds to
glamour but it's the core studies that drives the engine.

If you have read MyAeSI Ebook, you will know about the equation
Knowledge + skills = job

Building skills are important. And now to your question of what skills
an avionics student of aesi should acquire.

First of all. Build your communication skills. Oral and written. They
are the most important skill that one needs to have, whatever be his/
her work.

Apart from communication, an aesi avionics graduate can get training
in labview, learn c coding, know how to use matlab simulink and
embedded system depending on personal interest.

As i am from propulsion stream, my knowledge on avionics is limited.
So over the lifespan of this blog, i have invited few accomplished
avionics engineers from aesi to answer this similar question. Please

Recent AeSI graduates: Be professional

Today I was at the Annual General Meeting of AeSIAA. There I came
across a letter written by a recent AeSIAA graduate looking for an
intrinship position.

I admire the initiative of that graduate. He thought out of the box
and mailed to AeSIAA office for referel. But my admiration stops there.

A look at the resume dissipitated any good feeling that I had for
him. It seems that some people mistakenly assume that raw enthusiasm
and a willingness to work is enough to get them in the door. It
isn't.

You have to be professional. You are an engineer now. You need to
know how to write a decent resume. You need to know what to put in
that resume. Just raw enthusiasm won't do.

Please don't do such silly mistakes. They do matter. You have
Internet as a vast resource and google a doorway. Why not utilize
that to craft a professional resume?

I'm the author and maintainer of ftnchek, a venerable static
analysis program for finding bugs in Fortran code. In its
heyday, ftnchek was quite popular with Fortran programmers.
However, for some time now ftnchek has been kind of moribund
due to its only accepting Fortran 77 syntax with some
Fortran 90 extensions.

This situation is about to change. I have been awarded a
grant that can support a graduate research assistant for one
calendar year, including a stipend and 1/3 of tuition. The
project will involve rebuilding ftnchek to accept the full
current Fortran standard syntax.

Unless you begin, you won't know what you are going to accomplish.

Planining and planning and only planning will never accomplish you any
results.

It's the action that produces results.

Start that routine you are planning for so many days. Load on that
software your are planning to learn. Create that first fortran program
than trying you that get a perfect compiler.

Action brings results.

My prefered method is fire and aim. I like to start shooting and then
adjust than spending loads of time perfecting my aim before even
firing a single shot.

So which category do you fall in? Do you shoot before you aim or do

Total Immersion

Apologies again for failing back on the blog update.

Actually I am learning something totally new now a days. And any time
beyond work and playing with my daughter, I am spending it reading
more about that something.

As I have already written here a couple of time, total immersion is
how I gain the most. It's that thing in action.

When I was NAL, I was assigned the job of working with a vb code and
designing compressors. That was interesting but more interesting was
the way the cad designer used my coordinates and design data to create
a compressor. That very act fasinated me. Having no prior experience
of any cad program increased my curiosity in that job.

To cut the story short. Those days I stayed longer in nal just to
learn that tool. All free time I had was devoted in learning that cad
software. I was engrossed and that total immerssion was so successful
that I was designing my own compressors and cad modelling them for my
boss a couple of months later.

So what is your style? Do you take a deep dive? Let see what are your
style of gaining command of whatever you are interested in?

As the ancients said: "Don't worry about moving slowly; worry about being stagnant"

So true and as you are progressing through your semester towards the approaching exams, stop worrying about doing things slowly. Just make sure you are are not stopping it.

Similarly, if you are in training phase, don't worry about the slow progress on your skill development. Focus on improving daily than worry about the pace.

As my mom says, regular tiny progress is way better than no progress at all!!

I fully agree with Mainak, online communities like linkedin, cfdforum,
google groups are best way to keep in touch with the current topics
that are happening in your chosen field.

Moreover participating in this forums improves your communication
skills, which in my opinion is the biggest skill needed for success in

So much to read and so little time.

Yes this is the reality of today and for future. As information get
online and more freely available, this is the sentiments that you will
hear.

The earlier you realize this, the better.

Reading is and always will be an integral part of your life. With
rapidly evolving world, reading and keeping yourself current has
become must for everyone. Your earning abilities, knowledge
comptetiveness will need the sharpnessprovide by regular reading.

So start today. Make a habit of reading in whatever stage you are now.
This is one activity that will benefit you all your life. Read what
interests you but start the habit of regular reading.

Knowlege is compounding. The earlier you begin the more capital you
will accumulate.

This year I have made a point to read at LEAST 30 minutes a day
without distraction. I have not been super successful in this so far,
but this month onward I am aiming to improve.

3 things that I have learnt in starting this habit are

1. Decide a time for reading and stick to it.
2. Once you start, don't let yourself to be distracted. Focused half
an hour of reading is worth 10 times of a distracted effort.
3. And lastly be consistent. Daily routines are much easier to
establish.

Myaesi blog is back.

Yes myaesi blog is back.

For last 3 years I had been constantly updating this blog for every single day. So in mid march I decided to have a life without myaesi for sometime.

So I took this long break. No updates.

This experience was revealing. There were 3 times when I had some new info that I wanted to pass on but I had to resist.

Although I wasn't writing posts, I still received some comments on the blog.

I needed this break so that I can bring something more useful to you guys. I don't know if I have got anything, but from now on myaesi is back.

Getting into the routine will take sometime, but hopefully the posts will become regular from now on.

Hope all of you guys/gals are doing well!

Leverage your good qualities

Everyone has qualities and flaws. Ideally one should reduce their flaws and enhance their qualities.

But most of the effort is put in the former. To reduce flaws. But I believe leveraging your good qualities is the best way forward.

I have seen that when I am moving towards tasks that enhance and leverage my good skills, I become more confident, happy and jubilant!

Curbing a bad habit feels good but planting a new habit feels even better.

So what do you think? Which is better approach? What works for you? Killing the negatives or pruning the positives.

Job portals - how an AeSI graduate can use it optimally

As Seema Bhatia, former HR professional explains, "Job portals are quite useful when we have to recruit employees. Now, we don't have to wait for employees to send us their resumes, we can simply log on to the website, put in our criteria and get a list of the employees that we want. We often use the portals to target a mass audience."

The important bit in the above text is " put in our criteria"! Yes that's the whole thing.

The criteria are the keywords. If your resume have them, your resume will bubble up to the top. That's the secret there is in all online job portals.

Are you using this effectively?

Are you filling the job portal form with some afterthought?

Are you enriching your resume with keywords, describing your profile, experience and education?

Are you placing your target job specific words in your resume?

Hope this thoughts will trigger and help you use online job portals in a much better way.

Design-Analysis softwares or programming language should an AeSI graduate choose?

Recently Rohan had this question for me. He is in section B(aero mech), doing it from G.I.E.

So what should he do?

Should he learn analysis or design softwares or learn programming languages?

What's your call?

I would say do both. Design and analysis softwares are part of an engineers life. You can't bypass them. In the start they are the skills sets that can fetch you a job.

But knowing programming in any language is a life skill. It will make your life easier. As you pick programming skills, you will be able to automate stuff and tasks.

As an aesi graduate, I don't want you to push you towards software engineering if you aren't passionate about it, but learning and knowing a language will definitely give you an edge.

This all depends on your choice, and inclination.

During my AeSI days, and training period, I was more inclined towards programming but never missed an opportunity to pick up solidworks, ansys, etc.

The choice is yours!!

Measure

As Galileo said, anything not measured won't improve. Same is true for
any skills that you are developing.

Unless you put in the measurement, you will never be sure if you are
improving.

I was exposed to solidworks, Ansys and many other tools in NAL. To
track how I was doing and what I did in NAL, I kept track of the time
I have spent on each software.

This simple tracking, helped me tremendously. At the end of month, I
summaried the results and took stock. You can find some of this taking
stock posts in the archives of this blog.

So the take away from this post is measure and track your progress. It
boosts your skills.

How to improve your skills exponentially - Thought from AeSIAA outing

In the recent AeSIAA outing, I meet an AeSI student from chennai who
was such a good portrait artist.

He had brought his art work there and I had a look at his art. He
clearly had a passion for it and he was good at it.

After seeing this, I asked him if he has posted this some place, where
others can see it. He declined. I insisted Him to put it online for
others to see.

Why? Well there are three reasons.

1. By sharing your work, you spread it. You expose it and it might
land you some opportunity that would be impossible other wise.

2. By sharing you improve. You may draw or do things for your pleasure
but when you do things with the intenstions of sharing you tend to do
your best. It's human thing. By exposing it to other, you want the
thing to be the best.

3. By sharing, you invite critisism and praise. Both have their own
place. Positive praise motivates you while positive critisism will
help you improve. Critisism can help you see your pitfalls and improve
on.

Sharing if used can exponentially increase your skills.

So putting them for others to see is clearly to your advantege, but
where should your do it.

Internet is the best route. Don't have technical inclination to put up
a website, use orkut and facebook as your showcase.

Upload your work somewhere on free google pages and link it from your
facebook or orkut profile.

And the beauty of sharing is that this is not applicable for a drawing
artist, if you are learning catia or analysis, you can use the same
sharing technique to improve your skills !!

So what are you waiting for? The world is waiting to be amazed, show
your talent!!

AeSIAA Outing - some random thoughts

Yesterday at the appointed day 60+ people sacrificed there Saturday
and joined the AeSI community of friends and families for an outing.
Thank you all. You made it what it was.

It was the 3rd aesiaa outing and the unique thing about this outing
was we had more newer people joining us than the regulars. Members
outside Bangalore also came.

As someone told me "I don't know 80 % people here". That's a good
sign. Pointing that the reach of AeSIAA is going far and beyond from
where it began.

There was a resounding yes, when at the end of session, we asked
everyone if they enjoyed the whole experience.

Participation is enjoyment. That's what I saw yesterday. Those who
joined in and participated have enjoyed the most.

Well pictures of the event will soon follow. If you have some pics in
your digital camera, please do share it with us.

And for those who missed the event this time, hope you are enticed
enough to join in the next time we do something like this.

5 simple steps to have a productive day.

Be it in AeSI as a student or as a trainee in NAL or in your day job, here are 5 simple steps that can help you have a productive day.

1. Plan ahead.
Planning the day well in advance or the night before works great. This works because it untangles planning and action.

2. Make a routine.
Very similar to first point. Having a routine for all routine tasks helps in separating the action from planning. Frees you from day to day decision. Be it in what to study or what to work on next. Clearly maps your path.

3. Mix and match.
Working on one thing hours on is not going to cut it. Imagine how monotonous Sachin's batting would have been if he just used one shot all the time. Similarly, mixing different subjects or different activities in your work life goes a long way in keeping you alert and productive.

4. Not just work.
Work and no play is a bad combination. So Work and play. Don't just do serious stuff. Do the trivial stuff. Mix essential tasks with fun but non essential tasks. Life will be much more easier.

5. Process is important.
"Karam kiyae ja, fal ki chinta mat kar" says Bhagvat Gita. The process is important. The journey is the core. So make it a point to enjoy it. Destination will eventually arrive.

Most successful students and professionals use one or combinations of these steps. Why are you waiting for?
